TOKYO — A Japanese engineer has designed a new type of wind turbine that he believes would be able to harness power from typhoons.
Atsushi Shimizu founded a tech company called Challenergy in 2013 and invented a wind turbine that not only can draw power from the force of wind, but can stay functional during typhoons.
The typhoon turbine consists of three vertical blades and a central rod. It has an omnidirectional axis so that it can respond to wind coming from every direction.
Instead of driven by a propeller, the turbine makes use of the principle of the Magnus effect: air curves when passing by a rotating object, and the downward deflection of the air-flow produces a lifting force that counteracts the force of gravity, enabling the object to remain airborne.
The blades are controlled by the central rod, which can be tightened to slow down, or stop the blades regardless of the external forces.
Under normal circumstances, the typhoon turbine can achieve about 30 percent efficiency while conventional wind turbine can achieve 40 percent, ScienceAlert reported. However, conventional wind turbines could be damaged by typhoons while the typhoon turbine would be able to function normally.
"Japan actually has a lot more wind power than it does solar power, it's just not utilized," Shimizu told CNN. "Japan has the potential to be a super power of wind.”
According to the Japan Guide, about seven or eight typhoons pass over Okinawa prefecture each year, with about three hitting its main islands. Shimizu believes a single typhoon could generate enough energy to power Japan for 50 years.

I tried to build the Tirajator windmill just the same way about 10 years ago but it did not work because the materials I had were too rickety for its table-dimension (transmission with a loose chain...). But the other three windmills work properly.

Perfect for Taiwan. Store the energy using hydrogen. Electrolysis can change water into hydrogen and oxygen. Store the hydrogen in massive tanks. Once the typhoon is over, you can burn the hydrogen for electricity.
I moved to the Columbia Hills (which flank the Columbia River in Washington State) in 2000. In 2000, anytime one looked at the sky one saw hawks and eagles circling; when driving down a country road paralleling the Columbia Hills, it seemed as if there was a raptor perched on every telephone poll. Then they built the wind farms. Now all the hawks and eagles are gone, slaughtered by the wind turbines. WIND TURBINES ARE EVIL. (Or, perhaps I should say, conventional wind turbines are evil.) ALL CONVENTIONAL WIND TURBINES SHOULD BE DISMANTLED IMMEDIATELY.
Seems like lots of questions: Typhoon comes very seasonally, so most of the time it is not meaningful. When it does come, those Giga watt of energy by itself is a disaster .. Sound like asking for other's money for their pet adventure, These days news are only a shadow of truth.
What is it with American Engineers. Most things the Japanese have made BILLIONS on was invented HERE,,,Video Tapes, the Rotary engine, transistors, Etc Seems our "Bottom Line Greed" puts us, U.S. at a disadvantage with the rest of the world. We don't want to INVEST money to improve things,,just sell it off and move on,,and other profit from OUR Inventions. Disturbing
How sad some are praised in different parts of the world that are supposed to be less progressive and here in the good ole USA which I love a man was recently jailed for building a wind turbine on his own private property. What a shame this man sits in jail or went to jail when others are free to create and be sustainable. what an ass backwards world we live in where bad is good and good is bad! Hell is empty and all the devil's are here.
People kinda forget... That japan is the leading nation in terms of battery development... Those tesla has japones made tech. Those boeing uses jap tech. There is a new tech in battery that uses resonance vibration to store energy rather than rare earth. Battery is the weakpoint of everything. Hence cold fission.
This leads up to a challenge we already have with our current wind energy technology, storage! The ones who cracks this efficiently at a large scale will turn the world around and make big money. Lithium is the best but is rather expensive pro kWh, Compressing air into containers or underground caves for later release is plausible but has a low efficiency due to the temperature differences between the air when it is being compressed and released. pumping water to a high point and letting it power a turbine is also mediocre in terms of efficiency and demands a lot of space. Flywheel is a promising technology.
Ok let's think about this: "The designer of the typhoon turbine believes a single typhoon would be able to generate enough energy to power Japan for 50 years." Umm, where do you plan to store all of that energy for the next 50 years while Japan uses it? How often do the power lines in these areas go down during a typhoon, thereby rendering the potential electrical generation capability useless, since no one would be able to use it?
A typhoon is going to uproot this stupid turbine a single typhoon can provide energy to japan for fifty years looks like they going to make the whole of japan in to a battery....who will believe this bulshit
ahh , you do know that "energy" is not like rice , you cant "store" it for use a few months down the line. You cant even store it for a week so unless you have a typhoon every other day your idea is bunk.
The turbine is great and a very good idea but your idea of its impact is just plain dumb.
I can't wait for thunderfoot to do a video on this and either support it, or destroy it completely. This sounds like a big lie trying to get a grant for something that will work 1% as well as they say it will with a shit ton of extra exaggerations in it.
How big and ugly will it be in practice, though? Too much scenery is being ruined by standard wind turbines, which usually get placed in nice, rural areas instead of cities, thus turning natural-looking regions into industrial parks. There's nothing green about that. It's just more industry and less nature.
At one time you couldn't store any energy, then the battery was invented.
At one time the battery wasn't powerful enough to power a laptop, Then a better way of storing energy came about.

Not the same thing at all. We know how much time pumping water or electrolysis takes, so the capability to store the huge amount of energy that they claim can be stored just doesn't exist, so, unless you propose a method of overcoming the limitation of "time" and the limitation of storing either the hydrogen, or enormous quantities of seawater at great heights, then your statement is just something a completely non thinking person makes. All methods proposed by posters on here are not only incredibly expensive--so expensive that it makes this idea useless, but they are incredibly dangerous.

I loved the animation of the wind turbine self destruction. It is a good argument to advertise constant reliability and harvesting. I just have concern of energy loss of the spinning drums which I assume are mechanically induced to produce difference in pressure.
Crogentic liquid air storage. In Europe they have been improving developments up to 75 percent as the tanks are buried in gravel to reduce heat loss and better abbient heat harvesting from surrounding industrial environments.
Lol @ everyone saying batteries... do you have any idea how many cells you'd need, how big they would need to be and how much space they would take up... Sadly, batteries in their current (and even some of the near future ones) form just aren't viable solutions to this... Energy diversity is the way to go for now.
