Brain damaged at 2 years old, raised by a severely brain damaged single mother in poverty, who then later would threaten to murder me and kill me in serious ways if I didn't play football, football causes pretty serious brain damage in normal people but apparently it's even worse if you already have brain damage. All in all, my psychiatrist has told me that my intelligence is in the 99% percentile giving me an IQ of about 130, which means that my IQ before my life got ruined was around 250, meaning I was possibly the smartest human being ever born, lol. I use this formula to calculate my original IQ 130 divided by 0.8 (Brain injury at 2) divided by 0.8 (Poverty/abuse) divided by 0.8 (Football), 20% of my IQ from each negative event is pretty reasonable I say, and may in fact be an underestimate.
Wow great video. As a Vietnam vet I tend to have a love/hate relationship with psychiatry. Seeing a shrink and doing drugs in the 1970's after I got out of the military was a huge help in sorting out my life. But I always had the feeling shrinks were shooting in the dark and did not have deep understanding of root cause. At the time most of my frustration tended to be social and political seeing psychiatry as primarily a way to mold people to social constraints. Over time I've come to agree with Dr. Amen that much counterproductive behavior is due to physical abnormalities of the brain.
The most important lesson from 83,000 brain scans is farting. And "scans" that are essentially meaningless white blobs a kid probably made by splattering paint on a mural that are scans to get people mumbling, "Oh! Those are scans!"
Makes a lot of sense. It would also give patients a higher degree of confidence in a psychiatrist if they know that the psychiatrist is addressing something they know the structure of and not simply throwing darts in the dart (as he put it nicely).
WRONG, the brain will adapt to what it requires the most, such as if someone is good at maths, another part of the brain would deteoriorate or make way for sets of instructions that improve the performance of maths or it could take the path of an out of control mutation like cancer. everything has stress, even steel.
To me, this guy is simply point out the problem with our current medical protocols.....and quite frankly I just don't understand why this is so difficult to understand or just do, which is something he point out in this vid which I think pertains to ALL medical issues.....and that is...why can't they just scan you and evaluate the results...not just your brain but your entire body and look for issue to focus on and how to reverse or actively try to improve whatever it is the find wrong with you with the imaging results...instead, we have to go to hospitals to have tubes with camera on them shove up are asses for them to tell us our colon is fine....perhaps I don't know what I'm talking about but I can't believe these scans they have today can't get to that level of detail without the invasiveness....like the MRI and CAT scans....I think more people would go to the doctors if they did it this way and I think more issues would be caught before the developed into anything more serious.....
hot damn i need this man in my life. i feel like nothing is happening in the clinic I am. I know there are so many people who have mental health issues... but cmon. it's as simple as he says. a single brain scan can tell you everything.
I respect Dr. Amen and his team; however, I paid for the (expensive) Spect scans at the Amen Clinic and the results were vague and inconclusive, despite very pronounced and dramatic symptoms. I came away with no new information and generic recommendations for diet and stress management.
No psychiatrist in the world has access to spect scan for clinical diagnosis. Not only is the equipment never available outside of a research Institution, there is literally no insurance company that will pay for such procedures. This guy found some bizarre esoteric Niche and wants to show the world how special he is
Yeah all the brain imaging is great. But, my experience is that it will become the most expensive treatment a family cannot afford and the insurance companies will bill accordingly. You need to strive to make this kind of scan as cheap as coffee and the diagnosis available online. The entire scan and interpretation should cost about $9. You'll still get rich and the world will be better for it. The other way the insurance co. employee kids inherit an income stream trust fund. And the population declines due to unaffordable health care.
Why is psychiatry even legal these days? Without understanding how the brain functions they are little more than witch doctors. If they remain brain tied to the 17 century they should be banned from practicing and their victims compensated for malpractice.
Therapy for psychiatric disorders is USUALLY "X" were clinical information is the most important info to guide management pharmacological / psychotherapy / After the scans the therapy will probably Still be "X". Unless something is found that is treated vastly differently such as a brain tumor/ stroke/multiple sclerosis etc. if the speaker is using some novel new way to treat all these disorders that we clinicians don't know about. We would appreciate he publishes his results with evidence based practices we can evaluate. Otherwise this talk only gives false hope and based On YouTube comments : conspiracy theories from big pharma and the mainstream medical field.
Amazing video and you are so correct. Of course it seems to me doctor just doesn't care anymore. It's all about money. I never thought I would be this depressed and sick. Taking chemo has helped and hurt me also. Losing my son has just about killed me. Dying on the operating table didn't help me. Somehow I ended up with a brain scan the size of a silver dollar. No one cared to check on that again. My throat has never been right after staying on a ventilator and was in a coma. Life hasn't been easy for me. Me wanting to work and couldn't because I had fibromyalgia. Thank you
This makes me very sad. Like I know brain scans are expensive and not always 100% definitive, but I have several mental illnesses and all my diagnosis are extremely vague. This hinders me greatly whenever I have to switch psychiatrists. I pretty much have to start all over again, and thats if they believe me. Bouncing from med to med. Why hasn't any of them suggested that maybe I should get a brain scan? I would absolutely love to know what my true diagnosis is. Psychiatrists are all so sure of themselves, yet I get a different diagnosis almost every time. I feel like if I pursue this I'm going to get let down.
I don't know. This video just hit the feels because I am a victim of how faulty our mental illness treatment is. I hope this guy educates enough people to make a difference.
Dr Amen, are you able influence people in the medical community, including those at the Veterans Administration, to do more brain scans for these issues?
Second and unrelated, although I tend to believe what you are sharing, I also believe that some bad behavior is not due to bad brains but rather to upbringing and personal choices of those with comparatively healthy brains. It's the old "nature vs nurture" conundrum.
Ok for the scan. Good point, and also quite simple and logical, as he says: look at the brain as you do with other organs.
I guess it is very expensive also, and as the signs and symptomps of bad function are not always that easy to see as with a leg or heart, who would decide to whom do the scan?and prescribe it, and who would pay? i guess he does it privately at very high cost....is this what he suggests?
An most importantly, this brain-rehabilitation program he does, what does it consist of?
he should have really used 5 minutes in the talk to say that.
To anyone asking what treatment they use:
Hyperbaric oxygen treatment
not cheap. I think scan and treatment was 6,200 about 6 years ago. NOT covered by BCBS at that time.
Chicago suburbs has the machines.
No guarantee they won't try to get you to take pills. It was found I have ADD, pills made me very sick.
My husband was one of the early patients having a brain scan by Dr. Amen. The psychiatrist that was working with my husband had Amen do a brain scan. We were fortunate enough to be able to pay for it. From there my husband's psychiatrist took action in how to help my husband change in the areas damaged. The frontal lobe. Like all things education makes a huge difference. Not only did the psychiatrist know more about how to treat my husband but this knowledge was given to my husband as to what was causing his issues. That in itself gave comfort and answers to my husband whom then made an effort himself to learn more and an effort to process the changes and growth needed. This is just our experience. He made a big difference in giving information to the appropriate people to change.
Funny thing: I seem to recall episode of Star Trek:Voyager discussing this very issue and theory (along with capital punishment) - about 20 years before this. Writers never cease to amaze me.
However ... concept "it's my brain, not me" therefore individual can do whatever one pleases and still demand only treatment instead of isolation, at expense of innocent victims is troubling at best and really appalling. So it is either "Minority Report" or convicted criminals rehabilitated instead of isolation and / or punishment. Also: so it is NOT a weapon access, but brain damage that causes school shootings ? Some people are going to be pissed ... ;)
Absolutely Brilliant ! A " True " and Humanitarian Doctor . A Psychiatrist that actually looks at brain scans to help him and the patient understand what is happening in the brain and how to correct or minimize the negatives . Then we have the standard typical zombie Psychiatrists that have nothing else to offer but scribbles on prescription pads for medications that are useless and brain and life destroying . Dr Daniel Amen you are an extraordinary caring doctor and of huge value to society . Congratulations and Well Done ! God Bless ...
Does the government doing something to improve the life of this people, so they can pay taxes? Or probably the multimillionaire drug companies that “fight“ depresión and “mental problems” produce A LOT more kick backs than healthy treatments? .... I wonder how this doctor has not being killed yet. God bless him. We need to wake up and ask for real treatments, like his
This guy talks and acts like an Evangelical preacher..... Mass Shooters are great for the economy besides the media and politicians love them and wish there were more..... I already forgot this guy's name
The class of drugs that Levitra, Viagra, Stendra, and Cialis belong to are called PDE5 inhibitors. They work by relaxing tight blood vessels, allowing more blood to surge into the penis and cause an erection, says Gregory Bales, M.D., an associate professor of urology at the University of Chicago.
The little pills do the trick for more than two-thirds of men with Viagra protects the heart (ED). They also work for guys who simply need them for a short time to get their “confidence back,” says Michael Eisenberg, M.D., director of male reproductive medicine and surgery at Stanford University.
