In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Contacted his office years ago to ask questions. I like the idea that we need to look at and fix brains, but I do question the way his SPECT images are being used. SPECT measures cerebral blood, which changes significantly in any given brain over time. If you took four scans in a row, once every hour for 24 hours, would you get a consistent image of any single brain, or would you rather see that any one brain can, in a single day, have most of the different SPECT images he shows in these slides, based on what the person/brain is doing? In other words, my guess is that the "whole" looking brain will also look full of holes if you sample it at different times. If he published his data, this could be determined.
I want to believe, but to my knowledge, even after irradiating 83,000 brains, Dr. Amen has not ever been able to take a SPECT scan and tell anything from it directly without an interview of the patient about his/her problems. To me, this shows that the SPECT scans lack any diagnostic value, even for before and after scans. A SPECT is just a brief snapshot of what the dynamic brain is doing. These brain images may, however, due to people's faith in them and in Dr. Amen's credibility, greatly increase the placebo effect, resulting in real brain changes from self healing.
I was beaten and abused in everyway possible as a child. Not only by my parents but my community as well. I was hit in the head more times than I could count. I wonder what kind of therapy would alleviate a troubled mind such as this?
The NFL is suppressing even more recent data that is coming out about concussion and brain injury. We stopped watching not because they kneel but because the corporation doesn't care about the health of its players.
interesting points ,if anyone else wants to uncover 3 benefits of meditation try Reflective Folio Fixer (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my co-worker got excellent success with it.
Good video but a brain scan will not always reveal something. Mental illness can also just be chemical or circumstance. I do agree that brain scans should always be done. And psychiatrists can only go by what information the patient tells them. Also brain scans are expensive and to get one dove insurance companies require so much to get one.
We can write all the comments we want, but the truth is that powerful people called Illuminati doesn't want this problems to be resolved and this Technics to be used. Reason why we need to spread this message and give support to this people that have the tools to help people. Share it as much as you can
I suffered a major brain injury from a coma because of a car accident. I recovered at an extremely fast speed. I just kept mentally and physically active. That's all one has to do to become a better person in life, keep your brain and body moving.
I'm not an expert here, but he seems to be making an argument for a purely material model of mental disease... that mental illness comes down to brain chemistry and anatomy. Maybe that's true. In fact, that view kind of goes with the rest of Western scientific thought (as near as I know it), but then what about all the psychiatric models developed by Freud, Jung, etc? What about ideas about how we are shaped by our earliest formative experiences? This seems like it is a useful tool, but maybe the promise of it a little oversold. The story of Andrew is miraculous, and credit is due to the imagine techniques which helped cure him. I'm just saying I don't think every criminal will be detected this way.
I find our legal system pretty good in evaluateing parolees for rehabilitation while religion seems to be focused on judging and punishment or forgiveness. There should be no judgement but understanding and, if necessary, followed by restrain no forgiveness.
Wonderful and more than important information for humankind, how many people of each of us knows a person or even have one or more in our own families who are kind of "distorted" in their behavior? And we never thought about this! THNX GOD IS FIXABLE!! Thanx a lot for this video, I kiss you TEDx
The problem is that these tests are expensive, treatment is time-consuming and labor intensive, and hospitals and doctors offices can't make a significant enough profit from them to justify them when throwing antidepressants or psych meds at patients randomly while moving them as quickly as possible through the system makes them more money. Changing the system is beyond possible at this time, short of legislation to force that change, because it is taking 20-30 years or more to move research into standardized care, and in some cases, research hasn't been integrated even after 100 years. The business of medicine isn't about helping patients anymore, it is about making money. To change that, we need Universal Health Care to motivate looking for cures rather than just palliating symptoms, and providing more accurate diagnosis, rather than just putting patients through a revolving door system that pushes them in and out as fast as possible to maximize profits without actually doing the necessary testing to accurately identify problems. SPECT scans and MRI's are prohibitively expensive, and insurance companies are reluctant to pay for them. It is cheaper for them to just medicate patients with cheap drugs.
Mental health improves when you eat a proper diet; if you are living on canned, frozen and boxed food you are not getting the vitamins and minerals your body needs. Cancer rates are climbing and the medical industry is profiting from your pain and suffering.
That was one of the greatest presentations I've ever seen. It puts modern psychiatry and their drug-pushing behavior on the same level with those who would drill holes in the skull to "let demons out" many years ago.
The real crime is that the general public has no idea about this technology and the average person can't afford it. Using music technology, we're still using 8 tracks in medicine treatment when we should be using digital advanced treatment.
Word of caution. Interesting? very. But, Dr. Amen makes claims not yet proven clinically valid by neuroscience research and peer review. In fact, he mixes expensive neuroradiologic technology (SPEC scans) with mysticism when he describes SPECT scans as a "window into the hardware of the soul." He prescribes brain supplements (dietary supplements) as efficacious, which are anecdotal at best. His consultations and SPECT scans are expensive (~$5,000), which are not covered by medical insurance. Finally, his clinical findings (diagnosis) are not admissible in a court of law under Frye's Rule of Evidence and the Daubert factors. Put simply, he's a convincing salesman to the unwary.
I asked both my psych and PCP for a brain scan after watching thinks months ago , and I've asked and asked . They and most Doctors do not want to do it , they want to give a bunch of meds like candy that are basically poison. It's a set scan correct ? I'll look elsewhere
Key ideas (spoiler alert): 1. Same behavioral problems/outside symptoms can have different causes. 2. Brain scan, at least according to the speaker, can identify the core of the problem, i.e., the brain area that's not functioning properly. 3. Treatment specially designed for the dysfunctional brain can be way better than traditional psychiatric treatment.
Thank You, Dr. Daniel Amen ... for your courage to stick with this research in the face of discouragement ... and for doing this talk and bringing this video here. This was posted 5 years ago ... I'm really interested in knowing of any progress and will look for more recent information. I agree with you fully that when we can look we need to ... you don't mention it here but I know that one of the main factors that prevent people from looking is the cost ... I wish you might have at least mentioned that but perhaps it would have taken time from the most important aspect ... this needs to be happening (looking, when we can to see if it is a brain thing and then fixing that when possible. Love & Peace to All
Alzheimer’s starts in the brain 30-50 years before you have any symptoms ... I knew it ! Psychiatristsbdont look at the brain the very organ they are treating !!! Here in the UK brain imaging is not used.
The class of drugs that Levitra, Viagra, Stendra, and Cialis belong to are called PDE5 inhibitors. They work by relaxing tight blood vessels, allowing more blood to surge into the penis and cause an erection, says Gregory Bales, M.D., an associate professor of urology at the University of Chicago.
The little pills do the trick for more than two-thirds of men with Viagra protects the heart (ED). They also work for guys who simply need them for a short time to get their “confidence back,” says Michael Eisenberg, M.D., director of male reproductive medicine and surgery at Stanford University.
