Bobby Riggs threw the match look at some of the volleys he hit in the actual game. The match was fixed so he could pay off his heavy gambling debts. As he demolished Margaret court prior to his match against BJK many people bet against Billie Jean King resulting in the betting houses making a lot of money. Also there's the age issue.
All people are getting mislead here.
This was never about women are equal to men in sports. Ofcourse men are better, they are stronger and quicker.
This was about respect which women deserved, not to be treated in the lowest level & equal pay where they put in equal effort.
The sad truth is this match is just a stupid publicity stunt with no scientific merit that's just a Side show act. It doesn't prove anything it's like the samurai vs knight debate pointless and stupid.
Didn't he know he was old when he insulted her and challenged her to play against him? If he won, ignorant people would be quoting it. Now, just accept that she won the challenge. At that time when biases had an even stronger psychological impact.
Look into it and it's clearly fixed. Riggs has always been a gambler and clearly wasn't trying to win here. Also just a few months before he beat margaret court very easily, showing that he would've won against king as well if he tried.
BR was a degenerate gambler. He had beaten the women’s no. 1 badly (6-1, 6-2) shortly before this and then set up the match with BJK the no. 2 so he could bet against himself and make a fortune with BJK being the heavy underdog.
The rumors persist (and are gaining credence) that Riggs "took a dive" in that match. Consider the fact that the Number 100 male player (he was German) destroyed both Serena and Venus Williams in back to back matches without even breaking a sweat. A few years earlier, a retired Jimmy Connors crushed Martina Navratilova (then still in the top five among the women) in a handicap match (her shots could land in the doubles alleys, his could not). Riggs had earlier destroyed Margaret Court, a player who consistently gave King problems. And, to make matters even comical, transsexual player Renee Richards beat Riggs TWICE in exhibition matches despite herself being over the hill and performing abysmally on the women's tour.
Everyone knows Riggs threw the match to pay off gambling debts with the Mob. He beat Court (the world's top woman player) 6-2, 6-1. Proof that a 55 year old man is superior to a 30 year old woman, at least in tennis. Billie Jean King was having a bad year, and definitely inferior to Court. Bobby Rigged.
There is NO PROOF that Bobby Riggs threw the match. Don't compare the Court match to the King match. Apples to oranges! Bobby trained vigorously before his match with Margaret Court. Unfortunately, this made him overconfident for the King match. He did NOT train properly, instead relying on vitamin and mineral supplements. "Bobby Rigged" That's catchy, but you can't prove it. Let Bobby rest in peace.
Anita Vera How did she win fair, when she had the age advantage? Imagine if Mike Tyson went up against Floyd Mayweather. Or if Michael Jordan went 1v1 against LeBron James. Floyd & LeBron would win because they're younger. They wouldnt have been fair match-ups.
Serena and Venus Williams says they could beat any man outside the top 200. World number 203 karstan braasch stepped forward after a game of golf and a few beers he beat them 6-0 6-1 back to back
Hundreds of men can beat the very best women, beating a near senior citizen doesn’t prove much
Yup, the german player was 30 and williams sisters were 16 and 17 respectively during the match - so not much of a difference, right? A game can never be won on the basis of stamina sometimes it boils down to strategy and skills. Billie Jean could have been easily defeated if she did not change her game strategy that day. Bobby Riggs challenged and he lost so there is no need to be a cry baby and make excuses for that.
riggs uncharacteristically made many unforced errors in this match that he didn't make in his match against margaret court just a few months prior. and match point ended on an unforced error by riggs, though in the movie version it ended on a winner by king. it's also interesting there's hardly any footage on the actual match. what little there is out there shows riggs committing unforced errors that even club players wouldn't commit. i reckon if anyone saw the complete footage they'd wonder why riggs' play dropped considerably after just a couple of months..
Doellis Rowe Hopkins wasn’t fighting the best at that age. BJK was the best and Hopkins was half the fighter he was at 46. He had one tko when he was mid 40’s, ten years younger then BR. When was his last KO before that? How old. It’s not the same
Can someone explain to me the controversy behind this match? I'm not sure I understand why so many people are advocating this as women are on equal grounds as men in terms of sports but don't support universal unisex professional leagues. May I get some clarification on what exactly is the point of this match?
+petey1214 lol it's a excuse when he is the one saying he could beat any woman at his age. He lost and yes it's still a excuse and the girl beat him. Bernard Hopkins was in his 50 knocking people out half his age.
Tennis is sport that will not separate men and woman's physical differences at an amature level (Bobby Riggs being the amature). Yes there is a very definate difference between men and woman physically. If you took any top professional in any sport and the men will probably dominate. For a man to assert that a woman is less than for these facts is a total dumbass. A professional woman can have as much drive and determination as any man. Physical attributes dont make one better.
This women was a adulteress a liar a gay and a con woman.. You want equal rights shame this women like you do your husbands and BFs for cheating on a good man/women because her guy stuck it out where was the equality in her making her man a push over so she could fuck around. read between the lines this women was a horrible role model and pushed the gay agenda
since women want equality why not compete against someone at an equal age? He threw the game anyway he had a worse gambling problem then Michael Jordan. This game was more political then it was about skill. No possible way a Top female athlete is beating a Top male athlete in a physical sport. no such thing as equality This whole staged event of bringing gays into the light and putting women in a new platform. Her win was like Obamas win for President "a gift to society"
im not a misogynist but I also know that this was all staged. Not going to put women on a pedestal just because they are Female That alone is sexist.. You want equality go through all the hurdles everyone else does. Races have been fighting for equality and Gays have been given more rights in this society then most people of color. And it took less then 25% of the time lmao now that astounding.
I think his sexist statements were a little played up. He was pretty humble about the match after it was over, saying "She was too good, too fast. She returned all my passing shots and made great plays off them".
Thats all this staged bullshit was about bringing gays into the light and females on a platform to generate more commercial money. Whole game was rigged he lost on purpose because his gambling addiction was worse then Michael Jordans. But notice how everyone is talking about equality but gays have gotten more rights in a short amount of time and people of color are still being in prisoned murdered being captured.. Why not fight for that equality?
A woman in her prime vs. a grandpa :D What does that prove ? What self-respecting smart woman would use that as something to be empowered by :D If that was perceived as a great thing for the women's liberation movement, I gotta say, it's kind of embarrassing for the ladies at the time :D
By the way... Margaret Court
Lol.. apparently after the match where he waxed court when he was still in pretty good shape he went out to vegas and just got folded for several months leading up to the BJK match. Was he out of shape playing Billie? Possibly. Did he throw the match for a bigger payday? Possibly. But regardless, the dude was 55 and retired for over a decade (he fought in ww2 for Christ sakes). It would've been unbelievably embarrassing if she lost to him.
I will mention it. It's not an impressive win! This Holmes beating Ali. She beat a 55 year old man! If she beaten Jimmy Connors now that would have been impressive. So... She WON it was so blasé that women are still begging Tennis $$
im not a misogynist but I also know that this was all staged. Not going to put women on a pedestal just because they are Female That alone is sexist.. You want equality go through all the hurdles everyone else does.(not saying you don't) Races have been fighting for equality and Gays have been given more rights in this society then most people of color. And it took less then 25% of the time lmao now that astounding. now notice how she just happened to be gay and pushed that agenda.. she was a cheater a liar an adulteress and a gay a horrible role model but you guys still praise her.. shits sad
He probably threw the match. He had beaten Margaret Court 6-2 6-1, just a few months before. Margaret was a better player than Billy Jean. He was a gambler who was in deep debt to Underworld interests. Obviously, a lot of powerful forces set up this huge event, and broadcast it WORLD-WIDE, a very rare thing at the time. He knew that if he lost, a rematch could be set up. If he won, no one would want to see a rematch. He begged BJK for the rematch many times, pointing out how much money was involved, but she refused. He always claimed she won fair and square, but what else is he supposed to say, "I threw it"? One of the television stations did a special about a guy who worked at a tennis facility that Bobby frequented, and stated that he overheard the conversation between Bobby and some shady characters where Bobby agreed to throw the match in return for removing his gambling debt. The guy didn't repeat the story until he was old, out of fear. But the rumors were there from the git-go. Another possibility is that Bobby was drugged. He was taking FIVE HUNDRED pills a day from some quack he was promoting, and you can see videos of him online behaving erratically as he takes the pills......the whole thing was very strange.....It helped promote women's tennis, but not as much as Chris Evert's teenage good looks....just sayin'.....John McEnroe recently challenged Serena to a match (before she was pregnant), but she refused. Jack Kramer was made out to be the bad guy in the film, but his point of view was not fairly given. He, Pancho Gonzales, and other pros had labored for 20+ years to create a professional men's tour, travelling all over, and starving, fighting amateur interests every step of the way. They did all kinds of things to promote their tour. Bobby's crazy hustling, playing in a lawn chair for money and such, was no joke...that's what they did to survive.....suddenly, a much lesser league, the women's league, comes along ad demands EQUAL prize money...it was not fair. The women' tour did not draw one third the spectators that the men's draw did. Jack had good points.
wow, she barely beat (6–4, 6–3, 6–3) a 55 year old geriatric and is proud of it (almost twice her age).. what the hell is wrong with this world? What kind of a person would take pride in something like that?
This was a silly event. Billie Jean was 29 and at the top of her game whilst Bobby was nearly 56 and suffering from arthritis, who played his tennis in the 30s and 40s. He used the game to make some money, and she used it to make some gender equality point. Both got what they wanted. I'm not sure that tennis was a winner.
She pretty much played her father of course she should win. If it was really his idea then i feel like he threw thaf match. He was a hustler and gambler and probably owed some big money. This was genius on his part
Riggs had a horrible gambling debt. This is like McGregor trying to get the fight with Mayweather. It was all a show to get MONEY. Think about it. It was on of the most watch tennis matches ever at that time. Meaning it was for publicity and money. In terms of Billie King it was for Gender but for Riggs bring in the money!
any argument about this being a battle of the sexes doesn't get what this was really about, the man was a hustler. This was about fame, notoriety, and most importantly money billed to the public as a "battle of the sexes" bobby riggs won because no one would ever remember his name if this match never happened.
Bobby admitted later in life that he took a dive for this match. Just look at this video, they are playing like little kids. No power behind the swings. It was all hype to bring more popularity to the game of tennis.
And ALMOST everything a woman wins against a man was given to her. Notice how she got special treatment and the rules favored her. So imagine that. A man allowing for himself to be handicapped and at old age lmao. And this is what they celebrate!? I would be ashamed of all this. And in the movie that they are making, they BETTER HAVE make the rules known on how they gave her the upper hand. Looks like women always need to have the upper hand. Which is why women would only hire to have her husband killed or do it herself while he is sleeping 😌
The class of drugs that Levitra, Viagra, Stendra, and Cialis belong to are called PDE5 inhibitors. They work by relaxing tight blood vessels, allowing more blood to surge into the penis and cause an erection, says Gregory Bales, M.D., an associate professor of urology at the University of Chicago.
The little pills do the trick for more than two-thirds of men with Viagra protects the heart (ED). They also work for guys who simply need them for a short time to get their “confidence back,” says Michael Eisenberg, M.D., director of male reproductive medicine and surgery at Stanford University.
