6 Sleeper-Agent Pathogens That Can Make You Sick

Оценок: 9107 | Просмотров: 411921
Your body usually does a great job defending you from all kinds of viruses, fungi, and bacteria. However, there are some pathogens out there that can hide from your immune system and stay dormant in your body, waiting for their opportunity to strike. The Chickenpox Vaccine became available in the USA in 1995. I got chickenpox the fall of 1994. I was so ****ing angry that I couldn't just get the shot and be done. Even if the vaccine isn't 100% effective for you and you manage to get chickenpox, you tend to have a much less severe case. Kids these days are so lucky! (Assuming their parents aren't anti-vaxxers)
dl200010 (1 день назад)
I grew up in a family of 5. My younger 3 siblings had chickenpoxs, but I never got it. I even helped bath them and all. In direct contact. Nothing. Never got it. I did rush to get the vaccine when my daughter came down with it.

try clostridium subtermanale i have that and it does odd things i now have a fused leg that is chronicaly infected cant really get ride of it because it produces endospores that lay dormant and can activate when the conditions are right and antibiotics only treat part of it but at least it just chills out in my leg it systematicaly initialy infected me but i fought it off exept in my leg and after every surgery it came back with a vengance even after post op my doctor has never seen anything like it i even tried to find it in the cdc but couldnt find anything about it so yeah i am screwed

How about the fact anthrax spores can lay dormant in dry lakebeds for a century or more?
Hoehner Tim (3 месяца назад)
The Brits bombed a Gruinard Island in 1942 with anthrax to test it's effectiveness, making the island uninhabitable for 48 years. In 1986 they deconned the island with formaldehyde diluted with sea water and it was officially declared habitable in 1990. Since then they've been raising sheep on the island without a reappearance of the bacteria. Nasty stuff but apparenty there is a fix. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gruinard_Island

Us 90's babys and earlier rock!!! What's that about herpes zoster you say? Before 95 you say? Damn. I was born April 26 1990 and I'll never forget the day during naptime in kindergarten that I asked to go to the nurse and was shortly after sent home with chicken pox.

I was part of a chicken pox vaccine study for Kaiser Permanente as a child, and I ended up contracting chicken pox three times through out my life. Once when I was 5, again when I was 8, and the last time when I was 13. Horrible experiences each time. P.S. No, the vaccine didn’t cause Autism. Vaccines don’t do that.

I had an adult case of the chicken pox at 7. All over my whole body including inside my mouth and down my throat. I missed like two weeks or school and it was brutal 😖😖 I’m glad kids don’t have to go through that anymore

Lol I had chicken pox when I was 3... I scratched like crazy!!! But why don’t I have any scars?
musingartisan (5 месяцев назад)
Toxoplasmosis also creates a psychological change in infected rats, it makes them less cuatious of cats, in fact they seem calm and happy around cats. Toxoplasmosis is known to infect the brain of humans (thus schizophrenia, alzheimers etc.). Yet no research has been done to see if the infection can also cause a psychological change in humans to favour cats. This might be the source of the "Crazy Cat Lady" stereotype. Someone who suffers from schezophrenia, and the anxiety that comes with it, and are only calmed by the presence of many cats, increasing the chances of toxoplasmosis going from cat to human and back again.

I’m old/young enough to remember my classmates getting chickenpox and being worried about catching it but I also was immunized before I was 10. Yay no shingles!

I sure like all of your channels. Every once in awhile I sit down and give your channels 2-5 hours of my time. The trouble is I am disabled so I only represent a like to you and advertising on YouTube is being withheld for whimsical reasons so it is possible you are not monetized. Thus I am grateful to your list of those on patreon who can send you what they can afford. I truly thank them for keeping everyone working over all these years.

The last parasite can't make you sick directly. However, it can get you to contract diseases spread by cats.
Cat Loving Trio (10 месяцев назад)
You can only get chicken pot once, you might get it as a kid, if you don't, you should be safe from both chicken pox and shingles for the rest of your life.
Bill George Stout aka the organic mekanic (10 месяцев назад)
We are all equipped with the best treatment for shingles... its your own earwax! Seriously, but don't just take my word for it, rub even the slightest amount of your own earwax directly on the rash and you will find immediate soothing relief! I have found that it doesn't seem to return, at least not for 3yrs from my personal experience. Apparently our own ear secretions have antiviral properties.

My inmunology teacher told us that given how terrible and deadly tuberculosis is (the second time round and when it is antibiotic resistant), she would rather get HIV than TB. You can treat HIV and survive, even live longer than someone without it (if you follow your treatment religiously). With TB you have to be lucky.
Bo Diddly (10 месяцев назад)
Your immunology teacher should think again about that. I have been living with HIV since 2006, when I got Pneumococcal Pneumonia and almost died (which is how I found out I was HIV+). With TB, you can take your meds and get rid of it completely and never have to take them again. With HIV, you have to take your meds, everyday, at around the same time, for the rest of your life, or you can have what they call a "Breakthrough", ie a virus resistance to one or more of the meds. Then you better hope that one of the other meds will work on your breakthrough virus. Even with taking your meds religously, you can still develop a breakthrough virus like I did. I am fortunate that adding a 4th med got me back to the "undetectable" status. Also, with HIV, your immune system is still compromised for the rest of your life, so any other virus or infection you get can cause your immune system to fail or falter, causing an HIV mutation, which starts the whole "Better find another med that works!" scenario.

Kids don't get chickenpox anymore? Chickenpox damn near killed me. Weird to think it's gone now.
Dani Aceves Sandoval (11 месяцев назад)
Right??? I got chicken pox as an adult and it was the worst!!! I wouldn't wish that on anyone. I had it about 5 years ago, I got it just from being around someone with shingles. I assumed I was vaccinated as a child but I wasn't.
Sombra Materium (1 год назад)
So If you’ve had chickenpox and been vaccinated, you won’t get shingles or... Can they still come back? Because if so I’m jumping off the cliff once I’m old and grey.
Sombra Materium (1 год назад)
Valeria Naranjo Cruz That’s pretty disgusting of a thought. I’m definitely going to look into getting vaccinated then, just in case it would help. Better safe than sorry!
Valeria Naranjo Cruz (1 год назад)
Kakyoin Noriaki If you've had chickenpox you have the risk to go through herpes zóster when older, but it is rare. I don't know how the vaccine works once you've had the infection though.

You didn't talk about malaria, some variations e.g. Plasmodium vivax and P. ovale sporozoites can stay dormant in liver cells for years, there have been cases where malarial symptoms have appeared 45 years after inoculation.

It makes evolutionary sense that super-deadly pathogens would become these sleeper agents. If the pathogen killed whoever it infected right away, then all of its host population would die off, with the pathogen.

I got chicken pox when I was a toddler or young child then years later when I was 11 I got shingles 😥 it was so painful and terrible, in a band around my left rib cage that felt heavily bruised but it wasn't at all.
Amber Blyledge (9 месяцев назад)
That sounds horrible. Hope you are feeling better. Never heard of it so young before. Will have to research.
K Batt (9 месяцев назад)
That’s because shingles generally pops up in adulthood. In fact, many insurance companies won’t pay for a shingles vaccine if you’re under 60.

Fun fact: Toxoplasma gondii makes mice overcome their fear of cats, in many cases described as a love feeling for cats. Cats then eats mice, toxoplasma replicate inside cats, cats poop, mice eat poop and the circle of life continues (you know... for toxoplasma at least)

SciShow, you could have just as easily titled this "Can Make People Sick" so the fact that you titled it "You Sick" implies you want us to think you're talking to each of us specifically. Even in the video it was as if the annoying one was trying to scare us. Everything scary was directed at "you" and everything calming was directed at "people" or "they". You can kiss my ass specifically...
