Lead is really useful when you add it to things like paint and gasoline. Problem is, it’s also poisonous.

Wow I never thought about the fact that petrol (fuel) was called unleaded because it doesn’t contain lead. All our petrol in Australia is unleaded so it never occurred to me there could be leaded petrol. Lol, learn something new every day!
lead also was used in solder. well until EU introduced RoHS which meant the introduction of lead free solder. Fun fact, often the flux used in soldering is actually far more harmful then the lead (though citation needed)
Artists in the United States still use lead white in their oil paintings. They use it despite knowing the damage because of its unique properties and look that can’t be duplicated. So some thing it’s worth the risk.
You can find it today in fine art supply stores labeled “silver white” or “crackle white”
What about bullets? I'm not an expert, but I believe some use lead and some use lighter metals. I mean obviously if used in war then lead probably helps more than anything, but what about hunting? Wouldn't that make the animal dangerous to eat?
The metal needs to be somewhat dense, a bullet made of a lighter metal would be less deadly. Solid pieces of lead aren't too bad as it is quite unreactive. And without blood circulation, the very tiny amount of lead ions that have been dissolved won't travel far from the fragments of the bullet, which you wouldn't want to eat for other reasons as well.
Lead causes "acquired neuroporphyria". Increased δ-Aminolevulinic levels which block GABA receptors are a response to lead poisoning. Lead paint is still permitted for a variety of uses, art supplies, lines on the road, marina. Leaded gasoline is still for sale as "racing fuel". Propeller airplanes are still fueled with leaded avgas. Crop dusting from prop planes spread lead dust on the soil that is used to grow food.

Moderator forgot to say that tetraethyl lead's removal from the marketplace coincided quite exactly with the arrival of the miracle-cure for most photochemical smog: the platinum-plated catalytic converter. Yup, lead is ABSOLUTELY toxic to that platinum catalyst. While there was an overlap in the marketplace, a physical impediment was invented to prevent "mis-fueling." That is, the fueling input ports on cars were made smaller, on catalyst-equipped cars, to prevent mindless car owners from using the older (large nozzle) pumps (associated with leaded gasoline) to pump gasoline into their car's "gas" tanks.
This is not all entirely accurate. Lead is not very bioavailable. It's not 'easily absorbed into the blood.' Certain FORMS of lead, however, are more easily absorbed, and unfortunately these lead salts are the same ones that taste sweet. Elemental lead does not taste sweet and is not nearly as toxic. I like to wash my hands after soldering, connecting lead sinkers or working with lead miniatures just to be on the safe side, but I think it's important people don't freak out unreasonably about lead products. If you're not actively chewing on them or eating them... you're probably going to be fine. Again, lead salts are a different story.
Yes, no. I have licked Sn60 Pb39 Cu1 with flux core and I'm still alive. I generally wash my hands after soldering and try not to contaminate my nearby coffee. I also don't eat solid metal, it hurts my teeth for some reason and it's also completely pointless.

Leaded fuel is still used in racing applications, and in aviation. I can get leaded gas at the pump in several places. Or I could, if I had anything that was exotic enough to require it. Like a racing car, or an airplane.
So, now I wonder how long it might take for gas stations to completely stop using the "Unleaded" designation because it becomes so redundant and obvious that no one even thinks of lead in gasoline anymore.
