In my annual nutrition review last year, Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/uprooting-the-leading-causes-of-death/), I explored the role diet may play in preventing, arresting, and even reversing our top 15 killers. Actually, if you recall, the top 16. Since side effects from prescription drugs kill an estimated 100,000 Americans a year, the sixth leading cause of death may actually be doctors.
And that's just from adverse drug reactions. Add in medical mistakes (which the Institute of Medicine estimates kills at least 44,000 Americans) and that brings "health"care up to our country's third leading cause of death. Throw in hospital-acquired infections, and we're talking maybe 187,000 Americans dead every year (and millions injured) by medical care.
The best way to avoid the adverse effects of medical and surgical tests and treatments is not to avoid doctors, but to avoid getting sick in the first place. This year I thought I'd run through the top dozen reasons people visit their doctors to highlight some of the latest research in hopes of moving my colleagues and me lower down the list of common killers.
So you can more easily navigate through the menu of diseases I cover, this presentation is also available on DVD through my website (http://www.drgreger.org/DVDs) or Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/node/index.html/?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&linkCode=ur2&me=A1QZTUS5K8MU75&tag=httpwwwdrgreg-20). If you want to share copies with others I have a five for $40 (http://www.drgreger.org/DVDs) special. All proceeds from the sales of all my books, DVDs, and presentations all go to charity.

If dietary cholesterol is so bad, then are you proposing that body should make the cholesterol it needs all by itself? I have heard that cholesterol found in eggs is much better than the cholesterol produced by the body. If so, then why eggs are bad?
hcas can be reduced significantly by eating raw minimally cooked meat, Well done steaks taste terrible, also the point vegans always strawman, is that local grass fed dry aged beef cannot be compared apples to apples with industrial meat, the argument for a vegan diet is an argument against eating industrial food, same with China study, correlating casein with all dairy is such a blatant mistake it is hard to not regard as fraud, and to compare subsaharan africa to the west clearly one must account for lief expectations, obviously a signigant percentage of these deaths are in a population of senior patients
Regarding egg advertisement, I remember TV commercials in the U.S. featured a little song: "The incredible edible egg". You can't say they're healthy or nutritious or safe, but I guess you can say they're edible . At least the ones not infected with salmonella are edible (but still detrimental to your health and profoundly gross).
incredible message that I keep spreading to everyone!!!! People keep saying that it's too good to be true, but the science speaks louder than words!!! I would love to see big pharma gone and big broccoli ruling !!!!
So many positive things are said of this man and other practitioners, and they have. Trust your own instincts and change to a plant based diet. This will never be mainstream thinking because there is so much money driving the status quo. As individuals we have a choice, that choice will never be supported by the mainstream. We will be called crazy but the quality of our like, the one thing we have control over will be better and as we age that difference will be event more apparent as we likely will not succumb to the conditions that our contemporaries will.
Sadly, the blood vessels and brain, and the heart, require "good" and "bad" cholesterol levels far higher than this uninformed man yammers on about. To reduce both cholesterols to the levels he idealizes causes severe brain and heart failure.
The plaque in arteries is caused by patogens, NOT cholesterols. It's moronic to remove a natural nutrient that then causes severe disease and ignore the simple causes that use this nutrient to form the plaque.
Hopefully this man grows up some day.
Just a short question. Bacon is a natural nutrient? What's more natural, eating broccoli or bacon? Also, when we lived in caves you couldn't find animal fat that easily. Animals who lived and roamed freely weren't as fat as these poor creatures we grow on farms nowadays. In conclusion: I think vegan diet is far more natural than any other diet and you don't have to live a life of violence to fulfil your cravings.
love this man, not just for his voice, but for bringing these facts to us in such an interesting and wonderful way. He's blown my mind, just a the China Study did and McDougall. This last hour though really brought it home and the last thing I want to do is put any food in my system that is going to create inflammation. I think he's probably saving my life.
To those of you that bash this as vegan promotion... So? Do you not believe that there is truth and answers for problems? Lets just say the the evidence is incredibly against the meat industry.. as well as the dairy and egg industry. Forget anything he says... just look at the evidence around you.. I see it everyday in the Emergency Room. Dont see many if any vegans fighting heart disease or diverticulosis or cancer showing up in the ER..
+Tridhos vegetarians still take animal products, and also, statistically speaking, there will eventually be vegans that also get cancer.
the point is this: if you eat a whole foods plant based diet as your lifestyle then you will most likely not have any of those problems. You will die when you die instead of some debilitating disease
Wow! I had decided to ditch eggs which had crept back into my diet, as a man close by keeps chickens and I kidded myself that they weren't so bad! Thanks for leaving me with no doubt in my mind that they are very bad for everyone. A very amusing and informative talk, many, many thanks! :)
Meat isn't unhealthy if it is organic and pasture (grass fed) raised (as well as eggs), and is eaten moderately and prepared with properly ( as raw as possible or "rare". The meat behind these studies is probably typical meat from overcrowded commercial feedlots which do cause cancer and other diseases.
Virgin coconut oil is a saturated fat, but contains medium chain triglycerides which appear to prevent and correct Alzheimers(sp?) and is an immediate source of energy and is not stored by the body.
I don't know. This guy is engaging, but one or two of the things he said makes me wonder. His assertion that whole grains are good for you flies in the face of what i have experienced. If anything, whole grains are not good for you. Grains like wheat and oats are not the same that your grandparents ate. I had health issues and upon blacklisting wheat and oats, i felt like a different man. I urge all to consider what he is saying but please, if you can, check out the data. Recently there was an expo of sorts that said most of the medical literature in the Lancet was false. I have cut down on meat and dairy but everything in moderation, i say.
You named 2 grains out of 100's on the market. Think out side of the box like Ethiopian grains for one; these are Gluten free and high in nutrients. Yep, I definitely DISAGREE with you... I do not believe in heart disease in moderation.
+hombre1968 I have read the books by the German doctor Max Bruker who cured many seriously sick people with incredible results. He recommended eating muesli, freshly made. Just 3 spoons a day to get great results. He also said that it was important not to consume too many grains but instead eat a lot of different vegetables and some fruits and nuts. It worked for me too. People complimented me on my healthy look and asked me about 'my secret'!
I've had to deal with focus/ attention problems I'm much more clear headed, focused and my Tourette's has gone down now that I eat plant based and go to the gym everyday. Playing soccer also helped a lot and during games my tics would disappear. Although cannabis, meditation, and psychedelics had a huge effect and helped me also.
Thats not how science works :'D
wow, nearly all soldiers in vietnam had arteriosclerosis.. This must mean we get it at 20 years.. But maybe thinking about that nearly everyone of them was a heavy smoker and it came from smoking?!
First learn what science is and how it works, after that we can talk again :)
I think we're all adults, and if you think, you have to eat vegan, no one's gona stop you.
However, there is no reason to become vegan if you want life a long and healthy life.
Lets hope that future science will clear it, but at the moment, there is simply no prove that you HAVE to be vegan to live long, because none of the very old people living on earth are vegans.
Its just childish to try to prove something to someone, who is not ready to change their attidute, as none of us is.
Say thankyou Dr. go online you will find many people went all plant and it went away. Buy a juicer and Blender and begin to educate your self. Trust God he gave us a body that heals give it what it needs not GMO processed food. Clean home get rid of all chemicals.
I only go as Dr. wants a blood test for thyroid I feel fine want natural thyroid me or go off. I began in Jan Plant no meat egg fish just lots of organic fruits plants nuts Fax seed oil only Quinoa or burglar sometimes. Went from 175lbs. to 155 so far. am 5ft 5 should be 135 to 145lbs. small frame.
Loved this vid, but in defense of doctors you must admit that most people do not want to change their diet, change their lifestyle, or do anything for themselves. They want the doctor to "fix it" and they are ready to pay for it.
Yes, that's the main issue with people generally. They want to retain their lifestyle despite it being the main cause for being sick in the first place, so they'd rather consume meds and continue living the same way. Pitiful, I know. Well, I love my veg and fruits, so for me it's easy to say "go vegan" since I already am and I love my healthy diet that consists of both cooked and raw veg, legumes, and fruits in between meals. But people just like their lifestyle the way it is no matter what. Completely close-minded. On the other hand I often tell myself "why do I care?" The answer is simple: because of the animals. Not people.
Thank you, no I love the taste. I'm a very lucky person, I love most every Fruit and Veggie there is and the ones I don't love I like. All the cruciferous veggies are among my favorites. Brussels Sprouts are my most favorite but Broccoli is right up there. I just like to switch them up like alternating days.
The question needs to be asked, "On a scale of 1 to 10, What are you willing to do to improve your health?" If the answer is less than 9, you may find some improvement but you will never heal. We as patients have more healing power than any doctor. People say things like, "no one will change their diet to plant based" I believe that assumption is based on not knowing the truth. I respond to 100% truth about my health and letting me make the determination about what I'm willing to do. No one else can decide for you. Do you want to heal? Think about what you are willing to do.
CamelinaGold oil has a 4:1 ratio of oleic/erucic acid that halts the breakdown of the myelin sheath. Then goes a step further and studies show that after consumption of camelina oil, and MRI reveals that molecular mimicry occurs on the myelin sheath. Mercury toxicity is also a cause of MS. If that is the cause, removing amalgams from the mouth and eliminating fish with mercury. then a mercury detox will reverse MS.
What about Iceland and France they are some of the healthiest societies on earth. Both came in the top ten and Iceland in one study is regarded as the healthiest on earth. Both consume meats, oils, the French are also big on dairy cheese.
Dr. Greger! Thank you so much for your speeches, your presentation. I am sooooo glad that I found you!!! I have been vegetarian for almost 2 years, but am now Vegan!!! Yeah! Am trying to spread the word amongst my family and friends!! And will keep doing so for the rest of my life! As far as I am concerned, this is a total No Brainer! I can't believe how some people are so resistant.....unfortunately we have all been brainwashed! Keep doing what you're doing, you rock!
so as amazingly awesome this speech is and i love hearing it, I'm also just so angry...i just do not understand why all this evidence is out there, like literally the cure to so many diseases and conditions, yet the education is lacking seriously in our health system. as a registered nurse i am just flabbergasted how a hospital literally serves bacon to its patients, TO ITS CANCER PATIENTS. BACON IS LEVEL 1 A CARCINOGEN ALONG WITH TOBACCO AND ASBESTOS.
+Amanda Carlson The speaker explains it well how diet doesn't offer any gain for the industry ! And I suppose that financial margins on raw foods are negligible ! much less than on processed products.
Also you have to put things into perspective, many people who eat any food still live normally, the high percentages cited here about cancer remissions or prevention concern a small percentage of adults, or older people, which means you wouldn't see much difference in real life, at least if you are not a doctor... on the other side, these doctors would lose a lot of patients ! So...
I enjoyed the lecture, yet aside from stricter dietary choices to aid in the prevention of the most prevalent diseases, we are still exposed to so many other things that wreak havoc on our bodies. As for study on heart disease being non existent in Uganda, were they exposed to the same pollution levels and chemicals found elsewhere in which heart disease levels are through the roof? Eating seemingly healthful is obviously the least anyone can do to try and combat how much us humans have gone and fucked everything up on an environmental level. Yet oh the contradictory information, I thought eggs were good before watching haha, nope they are bad again.
You don't get how the body works do you? Humans don't need dietary cholesterol, our bodies can't handle it. If they could we wouldn't be dropping like flies from heart disease, plain and simple. If our bodies could handle excess cholesterol we wouldn't have arterial plaques.
you couldn't make hormones w/o cholesterol.
furthermore, your liver makes cholesterol. So if you eat some cholesterol, your liver will just produce a little less.
BTW only the liver can process fructose and some of the fructose may be used to create VLDLs.
A very informative video. Although if there's a food you like that was said to be bad in the talk, I encourage everyone to look at that food's nutrition section on wikipedia first before eliminating it from your diet. From that I could for example gather that moderate egg consumption (like once a day) doesn't increase mortality and drinking (low-fat) milk is mostly recommended.
+Johannes Riecken Anybody can edit Wikipedia. Because of this, it is not a reputable source of information and you will be laughed out of a university for trying to reference it in anything other than jest. The materials used in this video (especially those from the Lancet - my own opinion as I use articles from the journal a lot in my own writing) are all, as far as I saw, academic sources of information.
Anymore information regarding the latest comment from the chief editor of Lancet ? (One of the most prestigious medical journals in the world that publishes studies referenced in many discussions about health)
The editor in chief of Lancet, Richard Horton, wrote last month
"...Much of the scientific literature, perhaps half, may simply be untrue.."
+Michael R Main thing I get out of that is to make sure you don't just take the abstract or conclusion as fact - read through the study, find the data, find the controls, find the variables, see the results, _understand the limitations_ and voila.. vast majority of studies are fine.
I agree about not trusting "authorities", though, since they don't seem to understand the limitations.
+Michael R I saw that statement. It was eye-opening! My guess is that if you looked at the research, you'd see more distortion where there was profit to be made - ie mostly from drug companies and large industrial food bodies. I'd imagine the research Dr Greger cites to be relatively free from this, as there is comparatively less money there - although that is of course just a wild guess. But I'd love to see a breakdown!
The leading theory for humans laughing is apparently to do with reward centers of the brain reacting to new information or information processed in a new way, which may lend an evolutionary advantage.
I don't have any evidence other than... the medical studies put forward in these videos and other research I've done on the consumption of meat and other animal products... Then again, I'm not the one making an assertion regarding the safety of plant foods.
The class of drugs that Levitra, Viagra, Stendra, and Cialis belong to are called PDE5 inhibitors. They work by relaxing tight blood vessels, allowing more blood to surge into the penis and cause an erection, says Gregory Bales, M.D., an associate professor of urology at the University of Chicago.
The little pills do the trick for more than two-thirds of men with Viagra protects the heart (ED). They also work for guys who simply need them for a short time to get their “confidence back,” says Michael Eisenberg, M.D., director of male reproductive medicine and surgery at Stanford University.
