Beginning with a midline sternal incision, the heart is connected to a perfusion machine which will take over the duties of the heart while the surgery takes place. Two different grafts are used to bypass the blocked coronary arteries: the internal thoracic artery from inside the chest wall, and the saphenous vein from the leg. After the procedure, the heart is shocked to restart its beating. A drainage tube is left at the incision site to drain away excess fluid. The animation continues to show two other types of approaches to a coronary artery bypass graft, off-pump bypass surgery and minimally invasive bypass surgery. This is similar to the procedure performed on former president Bill Clinton and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. ANCE00199

manasa chaykam Yes you are right miracles happen to those who pray to our Lord with full faith and trust. We were in that difficult situation. God bless your grandpa. May the Lord bless and keep him and make his health restored.
Diamond Forever (1 year ago)
manasa chaykam My bro who is a therapist told me that he had patients who are late 70s, 80s and 90s who had bypass surgery and they all survived. Our family member had this surgery too. 5 arteries bypassed. he is late 70 and survived too. I wonder why your grandpa's doctor did not allow your grandpa to have the cabg surgery done. because of his age? Maybe he lack knowledge. Was the doctor practicing in the the US?

I have just finished running my 5th marathon in 5 weeks, i am an ex smoker 38 years old , i have been running for 5 years slowly gradually making my way up to marathon level, i now have a light dull feeling on the right hand side of my heart, i have been to hospital and had ecg scan, heart x ray and blood samples taken, heart specialist doctor told me i am fit and he doesnt know what is wrong with me, this was about 8 weeks back, when i go out for a run i am fine, if i keep at a slow pace, i get to about 6 miles and up the pace i start to panic a little as i feel my heart getting small pain, i will slow down, obviously, but after 1 minute there is no feelings and i am able to run as quick as i can for as long as i want, i have now through a search of internet that i might possibly have angina, (google search) and it can be classed as a run through angina, or warm up angina,. i asked the specialist should i stop training or keep my training up at a fast pace to keep my heart fit and healthy ? i looked at me as though he did not know the answer, i a don't know what would be the best thing to do? what is safest action ?any help would be appreciated

Or you could go vegan!
SlyAsianTie (1 year ago)
Being vegan might ruin the actual diet of the human, there are many facts to say so..
GAMMA RAY (1 year ago)
+Smellycat Yeah . Or just eat a bunch of twinkies and die.
Smellycat (1 year ago)
Or you could do something balanced instead of going to the other edge of it. You need to be careful what you eat, but also enjoy some things in life to the point where it doesn't put your life in danger. You can't only eat cucumbers out of fear.
GAMMA RAY (1 year ago)
No. Going vegan won't fix anything. Or you can do exercise if you weren't so lazy.

My son is only 16 years old, scheduled for surgery next month. An anomalous RCA and LAD myocardial Bridge. There is so much data out there. I am glad i found this simple video. This is helpful!!!
Savithri Lovett (2 years ago)
Maya, how's your son doing now after the surgery? Did he have high cholesterol? I and my boy who is 15 btw have high cholesterol. I'm taking Statin (Lipitor) but since my boy is still young, he is not on any medication. I try to watch his diet... no yolks, animal derivatives such as ghee or butter, no fried stuff, no fast food etc and incorporating lots of vege in the diet, kinda hard to get him to exercise but he says will swim more (Dr says 10 laps a day 2 to 3 times a week is best form of cardio exercise). I am gonna be seeing a Cardiologist next weekend for my case and want to consult him if my son needs to be on Statin for a short period of time till cholesterol level is reduced.

I had this surgery done 12/07/14; A quintuple (5 bypass). I am about to start playing baseball again on 04/12/15; A difficult experience overall, but a learning one as well.
I too got it done on 11th July 2014 in Mumbai and am thankful n grateful to the doctors n all the hospital staff for taking good care of me! I'm in good health as of now but diet control n walking is a must for all! It's almost 3 years n hope to continue for another few years! I have few friends who are still around after 30-35 yrs of byepass surgery! I didn't get to watch before my byepass but was curious to watch as to what the doctors did to my body but its not that painful as made out by all.... yes, its painful in the mind but not physically! Am glad I underwent and am healthy as of now n cautious in my diet!

NoobityBoobity (3 years ago)
Wait, how do you stop the heart? I thought cardiac muscle can keep depolarizing because it doesn't need the nervous system to contract and relax.
NoobityBoobity (3 years ago)
Awesome! Thank you!!
mussekhan (3 years ago)
+NoobityBoobity You give drugs, also callled cardioplegic solution. Its a mixture of components in this solution, but the most important component of the solution is potassium. You will basically flood the heart with potassium which will freeze the cells in a depolarized state and in this way stop the heart.

Ali Saab, Do not worry and make the patient feel worried. Yours and your wifes duty now is to make yourself happy to feel him happy and confortable. I work in a hospital and have seen lots of cases on heart. Nothing to worry. Encourage the patient to eat regular diatory food, exercise and medication. It is in both yours hand to keep him healthy in mind to make things come your way. Cheer up... Things will come your way. God promise. Thanks for listening...Krishna
