Why Your Legs Cramp at Night And How to Keep it From Happening Again

24386 ratings | 4125093 views
Why Your Legs Cramp at Night And How to Keep it From Happening Again Leg cramps at night – nocturnal leg cramps – are pains that occur during the sleeping hours. They can cause a person to wake up and occur at night due to prolonged hours of inactivity. Nocturnal leg cramps commonly occur in the calf but can also cause pain in the thighs and feet. Pain due to leg cramps at night can last for mere seconds or for several minutes. After the leg cramp passes, muscle soreness may linger for the rest of the night or even until the following day. Both men and women can experience leg cramps and they occur more commonly in adults over the age of 50. Leg Cramps at Night, Different From Restless Leg Syndrome Both nocturnal leg cramps and restless leg syndrome (RLS) occur during sleeping hours but that is the only similarity between the two conditions. There are many differences between leg cramps at night and restless leg syndrome, including: RLS does not cause pain or cramping, while nocturnal leg cramps do. RLS is more of a discomfort or crawling feeling in your legs. RLS causes the desire to move the legs, while nocturnal leg cramps often prevent movement. Moving the leg in RLS offers relief – moving the leg in nocturnal leg cramps does not, instead stretching is required. What To Do When Cramps Occur When a nocturnal muscle cramp strikes it can nearly leave you paralyzed. Knowing how to properly handle an attack will offer you relief and leave you less sore afterwards. Here are some tips to better handle nocturnal leg cramps. While sitting on the floor extend both legs out in front of you. Now flex your feet at the ankles and point your toes toward your knees – you may want to tug on your feet to offer an even better stretch. Get up slowly and walk around a bit – shaking your legs can also improve blood flow. Gently massage the area in a circular motion. Ensure blankets and sheets are not tight enough to make the leg muscle contract. Take a tablespoon of yellow mustard to relieve discomfort. https://youtu.be/0OtgQUD9SZc

Leg and foot cramps are extremely painful and different than a regular Charley Horse which goes away when you stand - I ask my pharmacist what to take and was told there is nothing over the counter but my doctor could prescribe something - Then he suggested drinking Tonic water because of the quinine - I have been drinking it for over a year and rarely have cramps - If I do get one the only thing that relieves it is hot, hot water and I mean hot, almost burning - After the hot water it goes away -

To eliminate the pain instantly, just force yourself to stand on the leg that is cramping and you MUST put all your weight on that leg. Before you can count to 3 the pain will be gone! It works every time!

I get these all the time and the best way I've found to stop the cramp is to stand on a piece of marble that has been in the freezer (put a flannel over the marble first) this works within mins and then you can massage the leg where it cramped x

Doesn't anyone remember what grandma did for leg cramps.... Long lost remedy... Put a potato in your bed and OMG, no more leg cramps at night. Just try it and see. Any potato will do. Don't peel it. Just have it near your body at night and return back here and leave your comments. I've used them for years, (tho I should probably look into why I'm getting leg cramps to begin with..)

I had such bad cramps in my toes, feet, ankles, legs, groin, fingers, hands, etc. I tried all of the tricks below. One night a cramp lasted 5 hours. I was on the floor writhing in pain and screaming. Then I read about putting a bar of soap in the bed. This sounds crazy, but for me it works. When a cramp starts, I will rub my foot on the soap or pick up the bar and rub the cramp with it. I even put a bar of soap in my bed at the hotel when I travel. I carry one in my carry on for the airplane. One time I had to take it out and rub it on my foot. Look it up. Docs say it works and they don't know why.

Try using "ICY HOT" which is available in most pharmacy stores. I've used this to treat my leg and arm cramps. This comes in a plastic tube and cream form and applied by rubbing into the affected area(s). The cramps is usually gone in 15-20 minutes. Very effective. I always carry a tube with when I'm away from home for half a day or longer.

It is a warning sign low on magnesium and potassium..... and potential heart attack.... L arginine and CO Q 10 is powerful !!! I take a powdered multivitamin and mix it with distilled water every morning that has all these minerals in it.... liquid form gets into the bloodstream faster unlike pills that sometimes pass through your digestive system. Have not had cramps for a few years now and I am 69.....

Okay .. here's the definitive solution to stopping leg cramps - a teaspoon of baking soda in 16 ounces of water. If they don't stop within 2 minutes, administer 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 12 ounces of water. Works every time and will prevent them from reoccurring for the night. When summertime comes around, I work outside a lot, and am remiss in drinking enough water. Before I discovered this remedy I could sometimes experience excruciatingly painful cramps in both legs which would often recruit nearly one half of the total muscle groups in the leg, and all I could do was lay on the floor in agony until they'd pass. I tried everything until by chance I pitched this mixture down the hatch, and at first I couldn't believe the results. Within 60 seconds they started to subside, and within another 10 seconds were totally gone! So now, before bed, if I suspect I may get cramps from being dehydrated, I'll pitch in the 1 in 16 dose of BS in H2O at bedtime and am almost guaranteed a cramp free sleep. You're welcome.

I know this is an old post but if any suffers from cramp like I do, pick up on this post, then I might be able to save you the pain. If you can get this product, trust me you will think it a miracle. I found this 15 years ago and I have one beside my bed and take one with me everywhere. Just 4 squirts under your tongue and within 15 to 20 seconds it has stopped. Some really severe cramps you may need to do a second time. I was shocked that it is not in many Pharmacies. I order a half dozen from the manufacturer. The product is SCHUESSLER TISSUE SALTS Muscle Relaxant. Once you experience the results, you'll wonder why this product hasn't flooded the market.

Aside from all the vitamin deficiencies and the lack of flexibility that is generally common with most of us the number one reason is quite obvious and easy to remedy. Do you ever find yourself under the covers and over heating to the point where you are sweating? So you pull off the covers and you realize that you left the heat off or set way too low? This will trigger a cramping episode especially if you are the athletic type and have extra muscle tone, every time. Just like when you see football players at a night game in a cold weather location. So when you find yourself in a situation where you can feel the legs start to pull you in to that state of tension and pain, you can do something about it before you get sucked into the state of incapacitation. Throw the blankets back on and get the area as warm as you can. Do this without unnecessary movement in the wrong direction avoiding complex contortions. Obviously this is a very difficult situation you find yourself in and sometimes unavoidable. That's when it's too late. For me it's always my over developed hamstrings especially after long days on ladders. I rub them vigorously with a lot of friction so the heat generated leads to a quicker recovery, most of the time. So remember to keep temperatures moderately consistent especially after dehydration and overexertion of your lower extremities occurred the previous day. Hope this info sheds new light in your dealing with these painful and capitulating situations with some preventative tips. Good luck!

When I get a leg cramp in the middle of the night, I find the only thing that works for me is to immediately jump out of bed and stomp around the room. I guess this action stretches the muscles and improves blood flow to the leg.
Mimi Logan (1 month ago)
In alot of cases the cause points to a dehydrated state and loss of sodium (severe leg cramping as well as other possible muscles can be involved in the extreme spasm) if you will just ear an 1/8 teaspoon of salt. follow with a sip of water. hang on. I know the pain is excruciating. hopefully within 2 minutes the. ramp will ease, and if you're anything like me and the folks I tell about this, you won't get another for 24 hours! good luck

Most effective method- pull your toes toward you, this will stretch the calf muscle and cramp goes away. As soon as you feel it starting you can keep your legs straight and point the toes to wards you. You can also do this as an exercise before bed, that is when I got my cramps during pregnancy. It totally stopped after few days.

I used to have fibroids, and I remember of waking up in the middle of the night with a terrible pain on my calfs, it was really painful and I still remember those times. Luckily i had an operation to remove the fibroids, as they will take the magnesium & other things from your body. Just by eating bananas and taking magnesium pills isn't going to help in the long run, as those things will get bigger and you will have heavier periods and other problems. Da Vinci robotic system to remove my fibroids was amazing, recovery was real fast and I don't have anymore those painful times waking up in the middle of the night. I also think was affecting other things in my body that were not so obvious or loud at the time. When you reach menopause your fibroids could/would sink but that may take years, so don't wait, and you shouldn't wait to be healthy! and those things aren't good to have anyway. So, if you really care for your health do it, also fibroids can stop women from having babies, or make it very difficult for the mother and baby. Remove those things and do not eat soy, gluten, bread as they create more estrogen and fibroids feeds from estrogen and they get bigger, so your problem will get worse. Good luck and put your health FIRST!

Suffered from leg cramps my whole life...... an engineer helped me...... take the tip on your finger, wet it and dip it in salt and lick it. Do it again 30 to 40 seconds later and your cramp will be gone in under a minute. As the vid says..... lack of sodium. This works 100%. And for 3 years I have increased salt intake.... not by much..... and have not had a leg cramp during the 3 years. This works ...... please try it.

I do experience the leg cramp frequently, but my father suggested a quick remedy to get immediate relief from this. Remedy: Drink large amount of water immediately as soon as you feel the cramp. I always keep a bottle of water next to me, before I go to bed. This quick remedy gives me relief within few minutes.

some of you are just downright rude. i am grateful i came across this particular video. i get the leg cramps often & when they do occur, i end up in tears because the pain is so bad. and its not just one leg, its both. when ive mentioned it to friends and/or aquaintances, theyve commented that it was RLS. but now i know better . and btw, i have had RLS symptoms too. they both can cause me to lose precious sleep time but i do have to say, i think id rather have RLS than nocturnal leg cramps, thats for sure!

About 60 years ago I was advised to keep a big magnet under my pillow. It worked. Honest! Alas, I can't find big magnets any more, just wee tiddlers. However, at the side of the bed I have a slab of smooth granite which is always cold. Swing (?) legs round, foot on granite, sudden shock usually - but not always - cures it. If not, I put really cold water on the cramp and that really does the trick.

When I get a crippling leg cramp, I slowly move to my refrigerator and take out the pickle jar. I take a large swig of pickle juice. In a few minutes the cramp stops. This works way better and faster than the mustard. After the pickle juice has stopped the painful cramp, I drink 8 oz. of tonic water with quinine. That prevents the cramp from returning during the remaining hours of sleep.

If you wake up with a nocturnal leg cramp and it doesn't go away within a few minutes it would be wise to call an ambulance and get to an ER as soon as possible. If this cramp is caused by a blood clot it could detach itself and lodge in a very critical place elsewhere in the body. ...Been through it, so this isn't speculation or rumor.
