The main joint of the shoulder, commonly referred to as "THE shoulder joint", is the joint between the head of the humerus - the upper arm bone, and the glenoid cavity of the scapula -the shoulder blade. This is a ball-and-socket type of joint. Shoulder arthritis refers to loss of cartilage on the surface of the humeral head and the glenoid of the shoulder joint. The two bones rub against each other and produce pain, stiffness and difficulty moving an arm. Types of shoulder arthritis include: Osteoarthritis - also called degenerative joint disease - is the "wear and tear" condition of the joint, commonly due to old age. Osteoarthritis is characterized by loss of cartilage, bone spurring and NO major inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis – is a result of inflammation of the synovium - the membrane that encloses the joint. Inflammation brings in the cells of the immune system, whose inflammatory chemicals damage and destroy the joint. It is not clear how rheumatoid arthritis starts but genetic predisposition together with infection of the joint are likely to be among the causes. Rotator cuff arthropathy or cuff tear arthropathy is shoulder arthritis AS A RESULT and IN A SETTING of rotator cuff tears. Rotator cuff muscles hold the ball and the socket together and prevent the humeral head from moving out of the socket when the person raises an arm. In people with torn rotator cuff, the head of the humerus moves upwards and rub onto the acromion. This causes damages to the covering cartilage and eventually arthritis. Combination of cuff tear and arthritis is a devastating condition that seriously impairs functions of the shoulder joint. Post-traumatic arthritis – is arthritis that develops after physical injury to the joint. Chondrolysis - sudden loss of cartilage that happens occasionally after a shoulder surgery, commonly seen in association with infusion of local anesthetics into the joint for pain management.

Knee Arthritis Stretches & Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo

These knee arthritis stretches and exercises are simple to do and should provide some relief from knee arthritis pain. They are also great for keeping your knees nice and fit. Read Doctor Jo's full blog post about this at http://www.askdoctorjo.com/content/knee-arthritis-stretches-exercises The first stretch is for your calf muscles. Start off with your legs out in front of you. Keep the leg you want to stretch out in front of you. Take a stretch strap, dog leash, belt, or towel and wrap it around the ball of your foot. Relax your foot, and pull the strap towards you stretching your calf muscle. You should feel the stretch under your leg. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, and do three of them. The next stretch is for the hamstrings. Keep your leg that you want to stretch out in front of you. Try to keep your back straight and just bend at your hips. Keep your leg straight and pull your toes towards you to get an extra stretch. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and repeat three times. The last stretch is for your quad muscles. This time you will lie on your stomach to stretch. Wrap the strap or dog leash around your ankle, and then lie on your stomach. Bring the strap up and around your shoulder so you are comfortable. Then pull the strap towards you bringing the lower leg towards your bottom. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds doing three of them. Now we will move on to the exercises. The first exercise is going to be a quad set. Put your leg straight out in front of you again. You can use a towel roll underneath your knee as a target. Activate your quad muscle by squeezing it and pull your toes toward you at the same time. This will push your knee into the ground. Try to hold this for 5-10 seconds and do 10 of them. Next you will do a short arc quad (SAQ). For this, you will use a foam roll or a rolled up beach towel. You want something big so you have a good bend in your knee. Prop your leg over the roll with your knee on the roll. Try to keep your knee on the roll the whole time, and then lift your foot in the air until your leg is straight. If you pull your toes towards you at the end, this will help activate all the muscles in the leg. Try not to go fast because then you are only using momentum. Go slow and controlled with your movements. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights. For the next exercise, you will sit in a chair. This one is called a long arc quad (LAQ). This is similar to the SAQ where you want to go slow and controlled, and then bring your leg up straight out in front of you. Slowly come back down. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights. Now you are going to stand up for the last exercises. For the hamstring exercise standing up, you want to keep the top part of your leg as straight as possible in line with your body. It might try to come forward if your muscles are tight, but try to keep it down. Slowly bring your foot back behind you, like you are trying to kick your bottom. Make sure you are going slow and controlled with these. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights. The last one is for calf strengthening. With your feet about shoulder width apart, and holding onto something for balance if you need to, come up on your toes bringing your heels off the ground, and slowly come back down. If that becomes easy, you can do this one foot at a time. Start off with ten and work your way up to 20-25. Osteoarthritis of Shoulder Joint Shoulder Joint Osteoarthritis is a most common type of shoulder joint inflammatory disease. Osteoarthritis is often seen in elderly patients. Osteoarthritis causes degeneration of shoulder joint articulating cartilages, rim of the glenoid cavity and ligaments. Cartilages will slowly get worned out. Eventually lack of cartilages results in joint with bone on bone. Bone spurs are observed over humerus within the joint and adjacent to capsule outside the joint. Bone spurs are bony projections also known as osteophytes. Osteophytes cause irritation of synovial membrane, capsule and ligament resulting in severe pain. Shoulder Joint Osteoarthritis Is Associated With Irritation Or Inflammation Of Ligaments And Rim Of Glenoid Cavity. Shoulder Joint Osteoarthritis Is Associated With Tendon Inflammation And Causes Rotator Cuff Pain. Shoulder Joint Is Very Painful To Touch And Movements. Pain Does Respond To Anti-Inflammatory Medications. Pain Is Continuous In Advanced Disease and May Need Advanced Surgical Treatment. Joint Movements Are Restricted During Initial Phase And Later In Advanced Stage. Patient Is Unable To Carry Weights On Diseased Arm And Do Movements Beyond 20 To 25 Degree Rotation. b. Rheumatoid Arthritis of Shoulder Joint Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease of shoulder joint. Soft tissue inflammation of capsule and synovial membrane causes thickening of capsule and synovial membrane as well as severe pain. Inflamed synovial membrane secretes excessive amount of synovial fluid resulting in joint effusion and swelling. Rheumatoid Arthritis causes severe pain and often pain is associated with mild fever. Pain is secondary to damaged cartilage and irritation of ligaments and tendon. Rheumatoid Arthritis also causes Inflammation of ligaments and tendon. Severe case may result in partial tear of ligament and tendon. In advanced stage of rheumatoid arthritis, shoulder joint often partially dislocate during rapid movement or rotation of shoulder joint. Subluxation is partial dislocation. Subluxation is either anterior or posterior. Subluxation causes severe sudden pain, which last for several hours. Pain does not respond to NSAIDs and opioids. c. Gout Normal shoulder joint movement is painless. Shoulder joint of patient suffering with gout is extremely painful. Pain may last on and often for few days. Gout is caused by inflammation resulting from uric acid deposits over synovial membrane, cartilage and rim of glenoid cavity. Uric acid causes inflammation of synovium, articulating cartilage and rim of glenoid socket. Pain is spread over front and back of the shoulder joint. Palpation, pressure and movement of shoulder joint result in severe pain. Tender Painful Swelling is observed over Shoulder Joint. Joint movements such as flexion, extension and rotation are extremely painful during the active period of gout. d. Pseudogout Pseudogout is rare and is a painful condition of the shoulder joint. Symptoms are often similar to gout. Calcium Pyro Phosphate crystals are widely spread in shoulder joint. Crystals are deposited over articulating cartilage, synovial membrane, joint capsule and glenoid cavity. Calcium Pyro Phosphate crystals causes inflammation of cartilage and synovial membrane. Inflammation follows swelling of cartilage and synovial membrane as well as increased secretion of synovial fluid. Pseudogout is diagnosed following lab study of synovial fluid. Crystals of Calcium Pyrophosphate are lineal long. Crystals are embedded in the surface of cartilage and synovial membrane. Crystals are also observed in Shoulder joint capsule and the edge of the humerus within the shoulder joint. Pain caused by pseudogout is often spread over front and back of shoulder joint. Pain is severe in the morning and gets less painful later in the day. Shoulder joint movement is restricted in the morning. Pain becomes less severe as the joint movements are improved during the day. Swelling is observed over front and back of the shoulder joint. Swelling is soft mostly caused by increased secretion of synovial fluid within the joint. e. Septic Arthritis Septic Arthritis is caused by infection of shoulder joint resulting in collection of abscess (pus) within the joint. Septic Arthritis can also be caused by penetrating injury or infection from other source spreads to joint through blood. Joint movements are painful. Joint capsule is inflamed. Movement of shoulder joint irritates.Inflame joint capsule causes severe intractable pain. Skin over the joint is red and hot indicates underlying infection and inflammation. Patient guards and protect the shoulder joint. Patients avoid any movement of shoulder joint. Shoulder joint muscles are contracted or in spasm to prevent shoulder joint movement, which result in severe pain.

The 2nd of February is Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Day and 3D4Medical made a video explaining more about the condition. Find more info at: http://rheum4us.org/what-is-rheumatoid-awareness-day/ Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where a person's immune system attacks and targets the healthy connective tissue surrounding joints in the body. It affects approximately 1% of the population. Rheumatoid Arthritis most commonly affects individuals aged between 30 to 60, however onset can occur at any age. Women have more than double the chance of developing Rheumatoid Arthritis. Other risk Factors include having a close relative with Rheumatoid Arthritis and smoking. When the immune system attacks the connective tissue surrounding a joint, this causes inflammation. Patients experience swollen, stiff, and painful joints, which can feel warm. Symptoms are worst in the morning and after periods of inactivity. The most common joints affected are the small joints of the hands, feet and ankles - however larger joints may also be affected. Symptoms usually occur symmetrically on both sides of the body. This initial inflammation can lead to long term joint damage and joint deformities, so early management is key. People living with Rheumatoid arthritis experience “Flare Ups” of more severe symptoms which can last from a few days up to a month. Rheumatoid Arthritis is mostly managed with medications targeting the immune system, which aim to decrease the inflammation and damage to the joints. Other medications are given for initial symptom relief however these do not combat disease progression. Intramuscular injections can provide relief from symptoms, especially during flare ups. If the condition is allowed to progress, it can lead to permanent joint damage consisting of cartilage destruction and bone erosion. Depending on the severity of the joint damage a patient may choose to avail of joint replacement surgery which serves to ease pain and increase joint mobility. Rheumatoid Arthritis is known to cause fatigue - however, keeping active is shown to benefit patients. Regular low impact exercise can strengthen muscles and keep connective tissue healthy providing better protection against flare ups. We need suggests and answers. She develops severe headache first, then severe pain and muscle spasms that becomes so bad that she can not bend her toes, legs, arm or neck. When is happens she has no nerve reactions in arms, legs, feet or hands. She then goes unconscious from the pain. 10min to 45mins. When she comes back to consciousness her whole body hurts and then she gets her eye sight back and can move for a few hours and before this happens again. Sometimes slow with legs starting first or just getting a headache and passing out. Headache always come first. Some face numbness. My wife is 36 and has had Rheumatoid Arthritis & Fibromyalgia for 10 years now. This started last year in April and she was hospitalized for 7 days in one hospital and transfer to another with no answers. She was depressed during this and they put her on Abilify. This helped the depression and she has taken it for a year now. Now she was hospitalized for another 7 days and they still don't know what is causing this. None of her current meds have changed to cause this. All the tests she has had came back negative. No fever. Never above 100.5 Blood pressure shoots up to 177-200 and normal is 77-99 Some sweating. Some hand of feet numbness. Sugar level is good during muscle spasms. Low CALCIUM & POTASSIUM EEG came back ok, she had a muscle spasm during it. Doctors say it is not a seizer. They did 2 spinal taps in April last year in 2 different hospitals and no suggestion of MS or Lupus Ideas we have?? Maybe a Fibromyalgia side effects I also think its an Autoimmune disorder; Maybe * Polymyalgia Rheumatica (large muscle groups) * Guillain-Barre syndrome (nervous system) Isaacs Syndrome -Neuromyotonia - Cramp Faciculation Syndrome - Peripheral Nerve Diseases Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy
