Under the influence of insulin, fat burning is stalled, in addition to storage of more fat being promoted. This is a terrible scenario if you are trying to lose weight, since at this time if you exercise your body will be utilizing strictly carbohydrates for energy. Not following a strict ketogenic diet? That’s fine. In fact, there are many variations of the ketogenic diet that are not as strict, but which still reap many of the benefits associated with it. Tweaking Keto There are keto adaptions for bodybuilders, athletes and others who perform an intense exercise where carb intake revolve,s around exercise. • Cyclical Ketogenic Diet - This plan is widely used by athletes, bodybuilders, weight lifters and anyone participating in high-intensity exercise and features short periods of high carb intake. Typically 5 keto days followed by 2 high carb intake days. • Targeted Ketogenic Diet - This plan is also used by bodybuilders, athletes and those who workout regularly to fuel intense workouts and features high load carb intake based around workouts. Conclusion If you’re trying to extract maximum benefit from the ketogenic lifestyle, exercise is a mandatory addition. Your health will significantly improve; including glucose and lipid profile, but so will your overall body composition. If you truly want to look your best, you will not attain it unless you incorporate sessions of both aerobic (cardio) and anaerobic (weight bearing) sessions. This week’s question comes from Linda in Columbia, South Carolina. My 77 year old mother is losing weight and is having difficulty eating enough food, nutrients and calories to replace what she burns up in everyday activities. She is presently under 5 feet tall and weighs 80 lbs. She eats 3 meals a day and snacks on cheese and nuts 3-4 times a day all with small portions. She figures she takes in about 1200 calories. Any suggestions? Linda, thank you for writing. As you know most people here are trying to lose weight. Your mom is losing weight and it sounds a little dangerous to me frankly. If she is losing weight involuntarily, she should be seen by a doctor and evaluated right away. Weight loss in older people usually means an illness. It often can be fixed if it is caught early enough so that might be the case here. I would make sure her doctors have evaluated her for weight loss. You might try front loading calories. Early in the morning, for example, is a way to increase calories for people who need more. She might try a high calorie milkshake or smoothie at breakfast that uses high calorie foods. Two of my favorites that are good for you instead of doughnuts are almond butter an ounce of which has 180 calories. That is a generous tablespoon. That’s all – so you want 1 or 2 of those. Or, Tahini which is used in Mediterranean foods. It is ground sesame seeds. Two tablespoons have 260 calories. That too is a way to pack in calories, thicken milkshakes, like this one- a blueberry, pomegranate that is an ice. You whip these together with the Tahini, Almond Butter, this wonderful fruit and ice you would get a very densely packed high antioxidant, high protein, healthful calories that have liquid oils, you might also have Flax Oils if you like. Get in a thick shake and try to get it down early. My recipe suggestion for you are hummus sandwiches on my website www.chefmd.com without the pita, and with an extra tablespoon of sesame oil or extra virgin olive oil on top. With the pita, they are 350 calories per serving. But if you add that extra tablespoon of olive oil or sesame oil, you add an extra 125 calories. That is a way to make one of my recipes usually low calorie, lower fat and lower carb into higher fat and higher carb but still good for you.
