I'm talking about potentially ditching your multivitamins, if you're not someone that actually needs it. This video came to light simply because a lot of people that have talked to and a lot of people that I've worked with, have had a very, very hard time letting go of their multivitamins. They take these multivitamins and they see them as their crutch. They see them as the end all be all and their link to healthy eating or the void fill from the nutrients that they're missing from their food. But the reality is there's a lot more to just popping a multivitamin and getting your vitamins and minerals in. So first off what I want to look at is the fact that 50% of Americans take a multivitamin. That is a lot, a lot of people that are misled. A lot of people are leading themselves to believe that they're getting all their vitamins and minerals and getting what they need from a simple pill. Also in reality, we have to look at how much money is being spent. We're talking like $11 billion dollars that people are spending on multivitamins. That's a lot of money. Okay, so let's talk about what is happening with a multivitamin and why it may not be the best thing for you. I'm not discounting it. I'm not saying that everyone should avoid taking a multivitamin. There are some subcategories of people that might want to take them, but I want to talk about some reality when it comes down to just popping that pill. First thing I want to look at is too many nutrients, okay? The simple thing is we have to look at this. If our bodies have the ability to take in all these minerals and all of these vitamins at once, don't you think there would be a food out there that truly encompasses all of them? You see, normally we have to eat different subcategories of foods to ultimately make up our nutrients. Now, if it was so easy as just popping a pill, I think that a lot more people would be really, truly healthy and if it was really possible to absorb all those vitamins and minerals at once, I think we'd have some foods that contain all those vitamins and minerals. We have to remember that we require specific enzymatic functions to truly synthesize and utilize different vitamins, minerals, and metals within the body. Each vitamin that we take in each mineral that we take in has a different process to actually being utilized and if we take them all in at once, we're not really allowing the body to do that efficiently. You're much better off knowing what is going to work for you and isolating specific vitamins and specific minerals for your type, for your bio individuality. So the thing we have to look at with multivitamins and we have this constant competition going on. Okay? In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. Lastly, you want to take your vitamin D3 with some form of fat like coconut oil or avocado to help absorption in your body. Because minerals helps reduce insulin resistance and it puts you into fat burning a lot better. Plus, these minerals are alkaline which offset some of the uric acid buildup that comes from the ketogenic diet to lessen the chance to get a gout or the uric acid kidney stones. Number 2 vitamin B1, this is essential in the adaptation of sugar burning into fat burning, and it is also great to relieve stress. Vitamin B3 is really good for lowering cholesterol that is coming out of the fat cells or liver and it is also good to support the liver in general. Vitamin B5 is another key B vitamin that is essential in the adaptation to fat burning. If you are deficient in B5 and B1, you may notice more fatigue, keto flu and keto rash, any of those symptoms. Number 5, vitamin A which is also essential in dealing with insulin resistance and you would get vitamin A in cod liver oil, grass-fed cheese, grass-fed liver and egg yolks. No. 6 vitamin D and I recommend vitamin D3 version, this is really good for insulin resistance and improving that. It is also in cod liver oil, egg yolk. You have electrolyte powder, nutritional yeast, and cod liver oil and if you really have fatty liver you could have choline in addition to the choline that is in nutritional yeast to strip off the fat from the liver. Even the pre workout supplements must undergo severe scrutiny based on the dangers that have been shown to riddle that product category for the past couple of years. Want to build more muscle? Looking for a supplement that can help you? Here are 9 of the worst supplements for fitness goals. 1. Synthetic Multi-Vitamins Let’s kick off the list with a supplement I can guarantee most of you have sitting on your shelf: a multi-vitamin. While getting your daily dose of vitamins and minerals is a good thing, synthetic multi-vitamins can be problematic. Your body can’t effectively absorb synthetically-created vitamins and minerals, and that is why you’ll find up to 1,000% of your daily recommended allowance for a nutrient in just one serving. This poses the risk for over-dosing. What’s more, many of these nutrients compete with one another. For example, taking calcium with zinc interferes with the absorption of zinc. Finally, studies are conflicting at best on whether a multi-vitamin can truly help or not. Save your money and get your daily vitamins and minerals from whole foods. 2. Hoodia Hoodia gordonii is a plant that is native to parts of South Africa, and it made waves over a decade ago as a weight loss supplement. The problem is that it was released with reported weight loss benefits and no real studies. Once studies began, the results were embarrassing at best. One study found that the group supplementing with Hoodi – over 200 people – experienced a variety of side effects. The most common were nausea and vomiting. The placebo group had no problems at all. Despite these results, you’ll still find Hoodia being widely sold and incorporated into weight loss supplements. Steer clear of this one. 3. Beef Protein Powder Let me get one thing clear: the protein you get from eating real beef is great. It’s bioavailable, supports muscle building, and helps with weight management. With that said, beef protein powder supplements are not made from real meat. Beef protein powder is the result of taking cow leftovers such as bones and tendons, boiling them, then drying the results into a flavored powder form. It’s a way to make a cheap product and sell it at a higher price tag than the more popular whey protein. Beef protein powder has a terrible rate of bioavailability. The creatine levels found in natural beef are nonexistent in this supplement. Just because you see “beef protein” on a label doesn’t mean a thing. Stick with whey protein for weight loss and muscle building. 4. HMB Beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate is a leucine metabolite that is often touted as an excellent way to support muscle mass. Unfortunately, the research doesn’t exactly agree. One research review examined the results of several studies on HMB and guess what…Not much could be said. In fact, one of the researchers commented that stricter controls were needed on HMB studies to determine whether or not it could enhance fitness results. While HMB might be able to prevent a degree of muscle breakdown, it’s often marketed as an anabolic supplement that increases mass. However, no reputable human-based study has presented concrete evidence of it as an effective muscle mass builder. 5. Testosterone Boosters Testosterone is the holy grail for guys. It promotes muscle building, fat loss, and a positive mood. Unfortunately, most of the testosterone boosters you find online and your local supplement stores are useless. There are two problems with t-boosters: First, many blends contain ingredients with no scientific evidence to back up the claims of their test-enhancing ability. Second, when a testosterone booster does contain an effective ingredient, it’s under-dosed to the point of being ineffective. If you want to improve your t-levels, focus on diet and exercise, not a supplement. 6. Garcinia Cambogia This weight loss supplement became a superstar thanks to Dr. Oz, when he deemed it a miracle in a bottle. Not only was this not the case but Dr. Oz also landed in hot water with Congress for making unproven claims in order to sell supplements. Human trials show that there was no difference between the group taking garcinia cambogia and the control group. Want to lose weight? Look elsewhere. 7. Weight Gainers For hardgainers, weight-gaining supplements seem like the only solution. It says right on the bottle that you’re guaranteed to pack on pounds, so it must be true, right?
