The Understanding by Design Guide to Creating High-Quality Units - Jay McTighe

06:41
The Understanding by Design Guide to Creating High-Quality Units offers instructional modules on the basic concepts and elements of Understanding by Design (UbD), the "backward design" approach used by thousands of educators to create curriculum units and assessments that focus on developing students' understanding of important ideas. The eight modules are organised around the UbD Template Version 2.0 and feature components similar to what is typically provided in a UbD design workshop, including: Discussion and explanation of key ideas in the module; Guiding exercises, worksheets and design tips; Examples of unit designs; Review criteria with prompts for self-assessment; and a list of resources for further information. www.hbe.com.au http://www.hbe.com.au/the-understanding-by-design-guide-to-creating-high-quality-units.html http://www.hbe.com.au/jay-mctighe.html

RailsConf 2018: The GraphQL Way: A new path for JSON APIs by Nick Quaranto

41:04
RailsConf 2018: The GraphQL Way: A new path for JSON APIs by Nick Quaranto Have you written JSON APIs in Rails a few times? Even if you’re escaped implementing a “render: :json” call, some day soon you’ll need to get JSON data out to a native client or your front-end framework. Your Rails apps might change, but the pitfalls for JSON APIs stay the same: They’re hard to discover, difficult to change from the client side, and documenting them is a pain. For your next app, or your current one, let’s consider GraphQL. I'll show you how to implement it in your app and offer real-world advice from making it work in an existing Rails app.

Building Cooperative Alliances and Struggling for Political Unity... [Left Forum 2013]

01:35:05
Building Cooperative Alliances and Struggling for Political Unity between Radical Scholars and Social Movements [Left Forum 2013] Abstract: Scholars and organizers working on social movement coalitions discuss lessons and theorizing emerging from research and practice to guide the work of building diverse alliances. A major impediment for contemporary radical social movements is the limited appreciation for the effects of the history of the Cold War and McCarthyism in creating a rift between intellectuals and radical movements. But transformative movements are at their very core intellectual movements. We need the intellectual and conceptual tools and understandings to assess our movements and define where we are trying to go. Anti-intellectualism has been a tool for elites to divide us and separate intellectual work from other movement work. What different roles do scholars and organizers play in both mobilization and knowledge-production work? Moreover, in this current historical moment, how do we re-think the proper relationships, divisions of labor, and roles that can address our movement's needs? The panel explores the practices and experiences learned through scholar-activist collaboration in the US and World Social Forum process and identifies new strategies to build stronger relations between scholars and movements. Panelists will share ideas from work in the US and World Social Forum process. Presenters will emphasize specific practices and projects that illustrate various ways students and scholars can connect with the work of contemporary social movements for global transformation. Watch as I show clips of students participating in a density lab, taking a quiz, and me talking about preparing for a substitute. ----------Monday (0:00)---------- • Making hall tickets for the new six-weeks grading period and providing an overview of the process. • Writing and discussing my agenda (and student learning objectives) for the day. • Several clips of students working as I discuss the lesson agenda. • I discuss the density lab. • Clips of students participating in the density lab, asking me questions, and me addressing students (based on incorrect techniques or data that I noticed). • Reviewing the day and explaining events that led up to it (class clips included). ----------Tuesday (10:01)---------- • Writing and discussing my lesson agenda for the day. • Clips of my classes during their density calculation quiz. • Clips of me teaching: o An sample of me messing up on purpose (to ensure students are paying attention), as well as students believing they caught me messing up (although, I was right). 😊 o Asking students to begin independent practice. ----------Wednesday (13:58)---------- • Providing a glimpse of our district's version of Canvas (a learning management system [LMS]). • I also give you a glimpse of how my teacher site is set up. • Discussing interactive video quizzes to prevent video skipping and hold students accountable. • Providing instructions to students on how to place their “How to Count Atoms in a Chemical Formula” graphic organizer into their interactive notebook. • Quick vocabulary practice • Ending one of my class periods (reminding students to clean up and to take their notebooks home). • Overview of my prep for the sub on Thursday and Friday (ugh!). Out on Thursday and Friday. No video clips. _________________________________________________________________ Well, that was another week in the life of a teacher (week 7)! If you watched part of all of the video, then thank you for following my teacher vlog. If you have any great ideas that I can possibly include in my high school teacher vlog series, then please let me know in the comment section below. I would love to hear from you. MT^2: MƒA Master Teachers on Teaching, Gary Rubinstein

06:46
The inaugural MT^2: MƒA Master Teachers on Teaching event was held on December 18, 2012 at Math for America NY. From statistics to engineering to computer modeling, nine MƒA Master Teachers presented examples that tied in with the theme of "Modeling in the Classroom," one of two instructional practices emphasized by the New York City Department of Education this year. The MT^2 event featured original, thought provoking presentations where Master Teachers discussed ways that modeling comes to life in their math classroom. Here, MƒA Master Teacher Gary Rubinstein presents, "The Math In the Moon."
