Hi! My name is Jonathan and I am a Chiropodist (Foot Specialist) in Toronto, Canada. May is 'Foot Health Month' in Canada and I am going to try to use this month to give you guys as much advice and information about how to keep your feet healthy. FOOT HEALTH MONTH 2018 #21 Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to damage to the nerves in your feet and the eventual lost of sensation (feeling) in your feet. Without feeling in your feet, you become unaware to minor cuts, scrapes, blisters or injury. Because you are unaware of a possible injury, this can lead to the development of more severe wounds, infection and even possible amputation of the foot or leg. This patient is a type 2 diabetic with no feeling in his feet. He works long hours on his feet and has to wear construction boots. An ill-fitting shoe lead to blister formation which eventually lead to an ulcer (wound). This is our third appointment together. Important Wound Care Tips for Diabetic People

07:42
There was a time when a minor cut only needed a quick wash and a bandage – and a mother’s magical healing kiss if you were a youngster. But if you have diabetes, a wound, cut or skin abrasion requires much more care and monitoring. In most people who have diabetes, wounds and cuts heal slower than in non-diabetics. Diabetes also increases the chance of an infection in minor wounds and cuts. A small cut can turn into a large and very serious complication. For example, a small injury on the foot can lead to foot ulcers. Diabetic foot ulcers, which are painful sores that can ultimately lead to foot amputation, affect 15 percent of people with diabetes (1). Yes, amputation is a real possibility in severe cases. Do not make the mistake of thinking, “That won’t happen to me.” Several factors play a role in wounds and infections in diabetics: Diabetes can lead to a weakened immune system, which can increase the time needed for healing. When blood glucose remains high, it impairs the functioning of white blood cells, resulting in an inability to fight bacteria. Uncontrolled diabetes is associated with poor circulation. As circulation slows, red blood cells move more slowly, which means it becomes more difficult for the body to deliver nutrients to wounds. As a result, injuries heal slowly, or may not heal at all. Neuropathy or nerve damage, one of the many diabetes side effects, can also make the matters worse. Suffering from minor wounds or cuts can be challenging with diabetes, but you can treat the problem with a little patience and good knowledge regarding what you should do. Here are some important wound care tips for people with diabetes.

6 Warning Signs of Diabetes | No 4 is Shocking.

04:54
Descriptions : Warning Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes: Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a metabolic disease characterized by high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. As of 2014, about 387 million people worldwide suffered from diabetes and they must get type 2 diabetes treatment. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas is either not producing enough insulin or the cells are not able to respond properly to the insulin produced. Diabetes is often called a silent killer because of its easy-to-miss symptoms. Most often, people do not even know that they have diabetes as early symptoms sometimes seem harmless after all they get diabete mellitus type 2. Here are the top 6 early warning signs of diabetes you should not ignore and you shoul know early about managing type 2 diabetes. 1, Frequent and/or Excessive Urination. first symptoms of diabetes adults is One of the earliest signs of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes is frequent urination with an abnormally large amount of urine. In medical terms, this classic sign is known as polyuria. When you have diabetes, excess sugar (glucose) builds up in your blood. The kidneys have to work really hard to filter and absorb all that extra glucose. 2, Feeling More Thirsty. Extreme thirst is one of the first noticeable symptoms of diabetes. Due to frequent urination, the body becomes dehydrated, making you feel very thirsty. If you drink sugary beverages like juice, soda or chocolate milk to quench this thirst, more sugar enters the body leading to more thirst. If you are feeling abnormally thirsty and drinking water doesn’t satisfy your thirst, consult your doctor to know early about diabetes symptoms and treatment. 3, Hunger Pangs. Having frequent hunger pangs is another sign of diabetes. When people suffer from diabetes, they feel more hungry than usual and tend to eat more. This happens because the body cannot regulate glucose that your cells use for energy. In addition, eating more will not get rid of the feeling of hunger in people with undiagnosed or uncontrolled diabetes, as this will just further elevate the blood sugar level. 4, Slow Wound Healing. Cuts and scrapes heal slowly in a diabetic person as compared to a person who does not have this condition. High blood sugar hardens the arteries, making the blood vessels narrower than usual. This causes less blood flow and oxygen to a wounded area, hence taking more time for the wound to heal. Apart from slow healing, the wound can develop into an ulcer or become infected. Hence, wounds, no matter how small, require close monitoring. Make sure to consult your doctor soon if your wound becomes infected or doesn’t heal. 5, Recurring Infections. High blood sugar makes people highly susceptibile to different types of infections. The most common sites of infection in diabetic patients are the skin and urinary tract. Diabetics suffer from frequent infections, and sometimes the infection recurs. This mainly happens due to a weakened immune system. A 2012 study published in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism reports that infectious diseases are more prevalent in people with diabetes. If you keep getting infections, it is important to get checked for diabetes. A simple blood test is enough to know your health status. 6, Unexplained Weight Loss. While obesity is a risk factor for diabetes, shedding pounds without even trying is a sign of the disease. Weight loss in such cases happens mainly for two reasons– excess water loss in the body due to frequent urination and the body is not able to absorb calories from the sugar in the blood. In addition, insufficient insulin compels the body to break down protein from the muscles as an alternate source of fuel, causing a drop in body weight. In both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, one of the earliest signs is fairly dramatic weight loss. Why Diabetics should not ignore foot pain? - Dr. Anantharaman Ramakrishnan

02:46
If you have diabetes and if your feet hurt, don’t ignore it, it could means that you could have reduced blood flow to the leg. So when you get the hurt after you walk a distance, it could means that you have claudication. Claudication typically tends to affect those who are older and who have diabetes or it doesn’t mean that you need to have diabetes for a longer duration. If you have diabetes the process of blockage that are going to your legs becomes accelerated. So even I you get diabetes later in life and if you are 70 or 75 now, you get blockage of the lower limb vessels if you get diabetes concurrently if you get pain while walking and if you have to take rest to relieve the pain, it is because of claudication or peripheral vascular disease. So it usually tends to affect the aorta or the major blood vessels which supplies both the lower limbs, aorta and the iliac vessels. So this is one reason for foot pain in diabetes. Another cause for foot pain is actually diabetic neuropathy. Diabetes can affect the nerves and sometimes if you have uncontrolled diabetes going on for few months or a year or so, you can have a tonging sensation or a pins and tingling sensation in your leg, these are called as paraesthesia. So but on more severe cases, you can have a burning sensation or as if your feet have been set on fire or if you are having a sensation of a gnawing or a deep seated pain, like if somebody is ripping your muscles apart. So your pain can be in the muscles actually. These are the two kinds of pain that can affect the patients with diabetic neuropathy. Acute hyperglycaemia also tens to cause muscle pain or if the blood glucose e is uncontrolled say 400 or 500, very high values, then there tends to be dehydration, there tends to be low sodium, low potassium, electrolytes are lost in urine and that tends to give rise to muscle cramping and pain so these are causes for foot pain in those who have diabetes. If you have pain and if you have diabetes, make sure that you meet your endocrinologist.
Can a Diabetic individual go for Dental Implants? - Dr. Abhilash Pasare

01:51
Uncontrolled diabetes is considered as the possible risk factor for the failure of dental implants. In uncontrolled diabetes there is uncontrolled blood sugar levels which alters the bone formation or increases the bone loss, delays wound healing. There is an increased chance of getting an infection around the dental implant. If these uncontrolled diabetic patients can come under a controlled situation where their sugar levels or their Hb1Ac is below 7, it is safer to place dental implants. It is not contraindicated in these kind of patients because once the Hb1Ac is below 7, under preventive antibiotic regime therapy you can place a dental implant if you get sufficient amount of bone width and high even in diabetic patient or compromised patient. So you can give them a healthier life and diet which in turn can help them to control diabetes.
Saving a Diabetic Foot

Diabetic Pat Schulkins knew the importance of taking care of her feet. But a tiny ulcer almost slipped by her. "I didn't notice it was there until I was putting cream on my foot. I felt something and looked at it in the mirror," says Pat Schulkins. People with diabetes are prone to foot problems. The disease reduces blood flow to the extremities making it hard to heal injuries. It also causes nerve damage, so patients may not feel their feet. "When you have diabetes and it goes uncontrolled and you developed neuropathy, the structure of your foot can slowly degrade and collapse," says Dr. Andrew Belis, podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon on Lee Memorial Health System's medical staff. That's what happened to Pat. She had developed Charcot, or rocker foot. The bones in her foot collapsed putting constant pressure on her instep. "So that when you're walking the mid-foot is actually striking the ground with more pressure than the front or the back and that can cause a sore spot to develop," says Dr. Belis. The result was an ulcer that wouldn't heal. "We basically reconstructed her foot making it more of a natural shaped foot so there's not these high pressure spots where the ulcer or the bone would break through the skin and develop another ulcer again," says Dr. Belis. Schulkins story had a happy ending but not everyone is as fortunate. Each year more than half the amputations in this country result from diabetes. "Our goal is to avoid amputations, because people with amputations end up having a very poor 5-10 year of rate of living unfortunately," says Dr. Belis. Fixing the bone issue, through a reconstructive procedure, put Schulkins back on solid ground. "They re-built my whole foot, otherwise I don't think I'd have a foot today," says Schulkins. What Is A Diabetic Wound

01:13
What is a diabetic wound? Doctor Steven Beutler, MD takes the time to discuss what a diabetic wound is with the American Health Journal community. Diabetes is a very common disease with over 20 million people in the United States alone affected. Worldwide the numbers of people with diabetes is staggering and the disease is being seen as an epidemic due to sedentary lifestyle that modern technology and abundance allows. Diabetic wounds are wounds that diabetics get due to two distinct reasons. The first reason diabetics get wounds is due to the fact that diabetics generally have poor circulation in their small blood vessels. This equates to less oxygen in the blood and lower nutrition carried to the extremities. A second reason diabetics get wounds is due to many diabetics get them on their feet and don't realize that they should take care of them or that they have wounds in the first place because of their location on the body. This makes things worse and can result in infection. Wounds can be healed using special wound cream and by learning about wound care through education.

7 Diabetes Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

7 Diabetes Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore It’s time to start listening to your body. Help avoid serious complications of type 2 diabetes by knowing the warning signs. By Beth W. Orenstein Medically Reviewed by Farrokh Sohrabi, MD Don't Miss This Roundtable: What It’s Really Like to Live With Type 2 Diabetes Your Guide to Healthy Habits for Type 2 Diabetes Sign Up for Our Living with Diabetes Newsletter Submit Enter Your Email We respect your privacy. Blood sugar that’s consistently out of whack increases your risk of health problems throughout your body, including your heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Resulting complications could lead to disabling, even life-threatening, conditions — and that’s why, if you have type 2 diabetes, practicing good diabetes management and maintaining blood sugar control is a must. Being aware of possible complications and their symptoms is one of the first steps to successfully managing diabetes, says Gerald Bernstein, MD, director of the diabetes management program at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital in New York City. Educating yourself may help you delay or prevent complications from happening. Start here, by reading about seven signs of diabetes complications that should never be ignored. Confusion, dizziness, and shakiness. These symptoms are often a sign of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). “People describe it as feeling nervous or anxious,” says Lori Zanini, RD, CDE, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Blood sugar is usually considered low when it falls below 70. If left untreated, blood sugar that goes too low could cause you to pass out and need emergency medical treatment. If you feel any of the symptoms of hypoglycemia, check your blood sugar. If your number is less than 70, eat 15 grams of carbohydrate such as 3 glucose tablets, 4 ounces of orange juice, or 2 tablespoons of raisins. Wait 15 minutes and then check your blood sugar again. If it hasn’t gone above 70, eat 15 more grams of carbohydrate, wait 15 minutes, and recheck your blood sugar. If you continue to experience symptoms, call your doctor or seek medical treatment. Zanini advises carrying hard candy or glucose tablets with you so you can react as soon as you feel yourself getting shaky. Excessive urination and thirst. Conversely, thirst and a consistent need to urinate could be signs that your blood sugar is too high. Over time, high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) can lead to serious complications, including kidney damage, heart disease, and nerve damage. You can help prevent and treat high blood sugar by exercising, following your diabetes meal plan, and taking your medications as prescribed. If you continue to experience episodes of high blood sugar, work with your doctor to see if you need to make lifestyle changes or adjustments to your treatment plan. Call your doctor or seek medical treatment if your blood sugar levels remain high for a prolonged period of time. If left untreated, high blood sugar could lead to severe complications that require emergency care, such as diabetic coma. Blurry vision and pressure in your eyes. Uncontrolled diabetes can increase your risk for several eye conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts. If left untreated these conditions can lead to vision loss and eventually cause blindness. It’s important to have regular eye exams and report any concerns to your eye doctor between visits. Call your doctor if you experience a sudden change in vision, or if you have blurry vision, floaters, or pressure in your eyes. Wounds that don’t heal. Diabetes decreases blood flow, and uncontrolled diabetes can result in poor circulation. This can keep wounds from healing because nourishing blood cells can’t get where they're needed. Wounds can turn into ulcers and sores that could become infected. And if they get serious enough, infections may need amputation. Regularly inspect your body, especially your feet, for cuts or bruises and treat them immediately, before they have a chance to worsen. See your doctor if your wound becomes infected or doesn’t heal. Loss of feeling in your feet. Neuropathy, or nerve damage from poor circulation, especially in your limbs, is a diabetes complication that can prevent you from feeling heat or cold or a cut on your foot that could then go untreated. Always wear good fitting shoes, inspect your limbs down to each toe and the soles of your feet every day, and seek medical attention for problems that won’t go away. Swelling of hands, face, feet, and ankles. Swelling can be a sign that your kidneys aren’t functioning properly. Other symptoms of

10 Signs And Symptoms Of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

03:34
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease. It is characterized by high levels of sugar in the blood. Type 2 diabetes affects 9.3 percent of the population (about 29.1 million people) in the US, while another 86 million Americans have prediabetes and don't know it. This type of diabetes commonly develops slowly over time. Most people with diabetes are obese or overweight when they are diagnosed. Increased fat makes it harder for the human body to use insulin the correct way. Long-term uncontrolled glycemia levels can ultimately lead to severe complications, such as - kidney damage, nerve damage, skin problems, hearing impairment, heart disease, and eye damage. The signs and symptoms of type 2 diabetes mellitus due to high blood sugar may include: #1 Blurred vision - when blood sugar levels are high, fluid is pulled from the lenses in the eyes, affecting their capacity to focus. #2 Wounds that won't heal - type 2 diabetes mellitus slows recovery time from wounds. Therefore, patients with this conditions take longer to heal because blood circulation is poor and they may also have other nutritional deficits. #3 Increased susceptibility to infections, especially fungal or yeast infections. #4 Increased thirst - excess sugar building up in your bloodstream causes fluid to be pulled from the tissues. This may leave you thirsty. #5 Numbness or tingling of the feet or hands due to a high blood glucose levels which damage the nerves and blood vessels in the legs, arms, hands, and feet. #6 Increased hunger, also known as polyphagia, is an early warning sign of type diabetes. The human body uses the sugar in the blood to feed the cells. When the cells can’t absorb sugar properly, the body looks for more sources of fuel, causing persistent hunger. #7 Itching around your vagina or penis - sugar makes a fertile breeding ground for harmful bacteria, and it is a buildup of bacteria around the genitals which cause the itching. #8 Dry mouth - the precise reasons are unknown, but high glycemic levels could cause dry mouth in patients with type 2 diabetes. #9 Unexplained weight loss - insufficient insulin forces the body to start burning muscle and fat for energy. This causes weight loss. #10 Fatigue - since your muscle cells are resisting insulin, they are not getting fed the glucose from your blood supply. It makes you tired. Note - If you have any of these signs and symptoms, it is vital to contact your health-care provider right away. How to prevent diabetic foot ulcer?-Dr. Sharad Kulkarni

03:19
Foot ulcer is the most common diabetic infective problem seen in uncontrolled diabetics or it will be longterm diabetes mellitus which is uncontrolled which usually give out complications like ulcers which is mainly seen in foot. It is because of the impaired microcirculation and neuropathy. Once this develops it becomes very difficult. So prevention is always better. Prevention of DFU is simple and it has to be followed in steps. The first thing is you have to control the diabetes. The second thing would be the care of the foot by usage of clean socks and microcellular rubber shoes where we have to prevent the injury on a daily basis. Legs have to be cleaned correctly with a good proper soap and clean stockings have to be used in order to prevent the injuries. Nail trimming on daily basis would be ideal because it can also cause accidental injuries to the foot. After proper cleaning of the foot especially in between toes and clefts self examination on daily basis would be definitely helpful in order to check if there are any injuries. On an average every 30 seconds an extremity is amputed because of the complications of diabetes mellitus. So this has to be prevented by all the means and the best way is to take care of these things. Once there is an ulcer which turn into gangrene if unattended it becomes difficult to treat. Apart from this regular physical exercises, praanayama would definitely help in controlling the diabetes and keeping yourself healthy.

Restoring the missing tooth by using the dental implants is nowadays very common to the each and every patient. Because of the dental implant, we can eradicate the edentulism to the patients. So depending on the age of the patents sex of the patients, condition of the bone, definitely we can advise the restoring the implants by using the bone graft for any kind of patients. If the patient is having uncontrolled diabetes, uncontrolled hypertension, if there is any case of cardiac disease, we have to go through diagnosis and proper tests with the advise of the specialists like cardiac surgeon and implantologist, we can restore the missing tooth in case of BP patients and also for the diabetes patients. If there is uncontrolled diabetes, there is much more loss of bone. That is mainly because of the osteoclastic activities, whereas in case of hypertensional patients, if we are going to restore with any kind of implants, we have to take the guideline from the physician or any personal doctors. We have to stop certain medicines. We have to start the drug regime in order to prevent excessive bleeding, excessive damage to the arteries. In order to delay the wound healing, we have to take the proper tests. Definitely each and every human being, we can restore with the dental implants, unless and until there is a good amount of bone, it is difficult to restore the implants. Amount of bone is directly proportional to the implant restorations. If there is a very good amount of bone there is success of the implants. Not only the amount of bone, the age of the patient, the condition of the bone, patterns like trabecular bone, spongy bone and cancellous bone which kind of bone presents inside the implants or the supporting structure is very very important. If the patient is controlling the disease very well or the condition of the patient is very good irrespective of hypertension, irrespective of diabetes mellitus, we can restore with the proper implants or titanium screws.

Foot Complications of Diabetes

http://yoga.all4utoday.info Foot Complications of Diabetes Whenever we think about people with diabetes, we often think of them as having problems with their feet. This is one of the most common complications of diabetes and diabetes, more than anyone, need to make certain that they address any problems with their feet early on as such problems can result in a life threatening condition. Foot complications of diabetes are caused by neuropathy. Because the high glucose levels in the blood of a diabetic person affects the central nervous system after a period of time, it also affects nerves in various parts of your body. Most often effected are the nerves in the feet. The furthest from the brain, it is here where people with diabetes who have nerve damage, often do not feel cold or pain or even heat. People with diabetes that is uncontrolled often can injure their feet without feeling it. The injury may result in a blister or wound that will be slow to heal. The blister or wound becomes infected and the foot complications of diabetes begin. In addition to not having the proper nerve sensations in their feet, people with diabetes often develop very dry feet because the nerves that secrete oil into the feet no longer work. Their feet may peel and crack, which only makes it even more probable for them to get sores and wounds in their feet. Because high blood glucose levels make it difficult to stave off infection, a diabetic with a sore on their foot must be treated differently than a person without diabetes. The sore may be very slow to heal, if it heals at all. Infection often sets in. This can lead to gangrene and, in some cases, amputation. Foot complications of diabetes work like this. A person who has diabetes and who has not been keeping their blood glucose level under control gets an injury on their toe. It begins to bleed and crack. Then bandage it, hoping it will heal. It does not heal and soon the wound becomes infected. They go to the doctor who begins to treat the wound with antibiotics. Sometimes this works, sometimes it does not. When the wound does not heal and the infection begins to spread, gangrene can set in. Gangrene can kill a person, and the doctor knows this. So the person with diabetes has a choice, they can either lose their toe or their life. In most cases, they choose to lose the toe. In some cases, however, the gangrene has already spread to the foot. Plus, the amputation risks more infection. In many cases, not only does the person lose their toe, but their entire foot. And this can continue until they lose their leg. This information is not meant to frighten anyone with diabetes. It is only to make a person realize how vital it is for anyone with this condition to be aware of the feet complications of diabetes. No one has to lose a toe or a foot or a leg. They simply need to manage their disease so that they can retain a healthy blood glucose level that will enable them to fight off any infection that may arise from a bump on the foot and stave off neuropathy. By maintaining a healthy glucose level and avoiding glycemia, a person with diabetes can lead a full life. The trick is to follow the rules dictated by the condition. Avoid foods that are high in starch and sugars. The Glycemic Index is an excellent tool that can inform a diabetic about which foods should be avoided. Maintain your weight and exercise regularly. This will also boost your immune system. Be sure to visit your doctor regularly and monitor your blood glucose level. Keep a record of the levels to present to your doctor so he or she can adjust your insulin or medication if needed. By complying with your physician, you an avoid many of the complications that accompany diabetes. Diabetes does not have to be a killer. Glycemia is life threatening but can be controlled. If you or a loved one has this condition, see the doctor regularly and follow the plans to manage the disease. http://yoga.all4utoday.info

Five Signs That Could be Symptoms of Diabetes

Visit http://www.leehealth.org/ or follow us on social media! Instagram 📷: https://www.instagram.com/lee_health Facebook📱: https://www.facebook.com/LeeHealth Twitter 🐦: https://twitter.com/Lee_Health Lee Health is a nationally recognized, award-winning health system in Southwest Florida. We are caring people, inspiring health. The numbers are surely attention getting: nearly 7 million Americans have undiagnosed diabetes. What gets less notice are the early warning signs. "If they're not going to their doctor, if they're not seeing their physician they're not having those lab works, they're not reporting their signs they could just be going along with their normal daily activities," says Melanie Aracri, a certified diabetes educator for Lee Health. All too often patients show up at a hospital in a health crisis and find out they have highly elevated blood sugar. New studies find 1 in 10 heart attack patients may have undetected diabetes. We've broken down 5 warnings signs that should get your attention. "The three classic signs of high blood sugar, we call them the three "P"s: polyphagia, polydipsia, and polyuria. Those are increased thirst, increased hunger, and increased urination," says Aracri. It's easy to minimize increased thirst, especially when it's hot. And frequent urination seems to naturally follow. But experts say it could be our body's way of flushing extra glucose. "The kidney has to work really hard to get that blood sugar out, that blood glucose out when it's high," says Aracri. Wounds that don't heal could be another warning sign. "The body's not able to fight that infection because of that extra glucose in the system," says Aracri. Frequent yeast or urinary tract infections may also be a red flag many people fail to consider. The earlier diabetes is picked up, the easier it is to avoid complications. "it's a learning how to adapt your eating pattern, your meal plan to your lifelong activities and daily habits," says Aracri.

Important Wound Care Tips for Diabetic People | Top 10 Home Remedies

Important Wound Care Tips for Diabetic People | Top 10 Home Remedies: . Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq6puMSvUFeRbquVqU4jekw?sub_confirmation=1 There was a time when a minor cut only needed a quick wash and a bandage – and a mother’s magical healing kiss if you were a youngster. Do not make the mistake of thinking, “That won’t happen to me.”Several factors play a role in wounds and infections in diabetics:Diabetes can lead to a weakened immune system, which can increase the time needed for healing. When blood glucose remains high, it impairs the functioning of white blood cells, resulting in an inability to fight bacteria.Uncontrolled diabetes is associated with poor circulation. As circulation slows, red blood cells move more slowly, which means it becomes more difficult for the body to deliver nutrients to wounds. As a result, injuries heal slowly, or may not heal at all.Neuropathy or nerve damage, one of the many diabetes side effects, can also make the matters worse.Suffering from minor wounds or cuts can be challenging with diabetes, but you can treat the problem with a little patience and good knowledge regarding what you should do. Here are some important wound care tips for people with diabetes.1. Clean and Check the WoundBefore you start any kind of treatment, clean the affected area thoroughly. Proper cleaning of a wound will ensure optimal healing and reduce the risk of infection. The easiest way to clean minor wounds is with clean running water. This will help remove as much dirt, debris and bacteria as possible.Use cool water under moderate pressure and a mild soap to wash the wounded area. If you do not have filtered water, use boiled and cooled water, or distilled water.Gently pat the area dry using a clean towel.Apply a thick coat of any antiseptic cream.Cover it with a sterile dressing or bandage.Change the dressing frequently, at least 2 or 3 times daily. At the same time, no matter how minor a wound is, if you are diabetic you need to check the wound more often. Whenever you remove the bandage, thoroughly check the affected area for any sign of infection. If you notice any abnormalities, address it with your doctor immediately.2. Manage Blood Sugar LevelTo reduce the risk of infection from minor wounds and cuts, it’s also important to keep a close eye on your blood sugar level.High levels of glucose in the blood can delay the healing process and even increase the risk of infection.A 2013 study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that people undergoing surgery for chronic diabetes wou #ImportantWoundCareTips, #DiabeticPeople, #HomeRemedies

Pat Schulkins is one of the millions of Americans with type 2 diabetes. "Oh I probably have had it around 15 years," says Pat Schulkins. She monitors her glucose, but when it came to the state of her feet, Pat was unfeeling. About half of diabetics have this side effect called neuropathy. "These patients, especially when they get really bad, lose the ability to feel their feet. So they don't know when there's a problem," says Dr. Andrew Belis, foot and ankle surgeon on staff with Lee Memorial Health System. Diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage brought on by uncontrolled blood sugar. The feet and toes are most commonly affected. The lack of sensation increases the risk of serious problems when injuries and sores go unnoticed. That's exactly what happened to Schulkins. "It was like a big blister kind of, inward though. It wasn't sticking out like a blister does," says Schulkins. By the time she noticed the ulcer on her foot, it was almost too late to save. "The ulcer was there and it was chronic and resistant to care. And we got to change courses and address the underlining bone structure, so we basically reconstructed her foot so there's not these high pressure spots where the ulcer or the bone would break through the skin," says Dr. Belis. Experts stress the importance of knowing the symptoms, which may include, tingling, burning, pain or numbness in the feet; getting annual foot exams and wearing approved diabetic shoes if needed. "Even simple things like an ingrown nail can get infected; it can get down to the bone and can risk losing the toe. You or I notice a sore or even a small cut on your foot people with diabetes have less feeling they may not notice it until two or three weeks later. By that point it could have erupted into a full blown infection," says Dr. Belis. Although she managed to side step an amputation, Schulkins will never take her feet for granted. "And I know, I never thought it would happen," says Schulkins.
