This video illustrates weight-based dosing of pediatric medicines like acetaminophen and ibuprofen via syringe. The key concept is the elimination of calculation as a source of dosing error. Converting from kg of child to mg of active ingredient and then to ml of solution becomes: Attach label to matching ml scale and fill to child's weight. http://www.rxwiki.com/tylenol-0 To give your child a safe dose of Tylenol, you should: * use an accurate weight for your child * check the Drug Facts label to confirm that it says "160 mg per 5 ml" or "160 mg (in each 5 ml)" * give the dose for your child's weight * use the oral syringe that came with your medication to measure the medication * write down the time you gave the dose so that you don't give another dose too quickly *ask your healthcare provider if you have any questions or if you are dosing a child under 2 years of age

For less than 2 - 3 months age, take a digital rectal temperature and if a real fever have your infant seen. Past age 2 - 3 months, if your child looks good, this is not an emergency even at 104f / 40c. Most common cause of fever - viral -like colds. If super hot (104 or 39 - 40) do a sponge bath with cool wet clothes, treat the fever - double check the dose - ibuprofen if over 6 months old, and acetaminophen if under 6 months. Weight Based Pediatric Doser by Pre-R

Demo for a weight based multi doser for children's elixirs. Works for kids up to 100 pounds and gives more precise dosing than your kitchen teaspoon or the miniature shot glass that comes with the meds. For you medical folk, the doser delivers 15mg/kg acetaminophen, 1.17mg/kg diphenhydramine, 9.37mg/kg ibuprofen and 1.41mg/kg prednisolone. You may wonder why I don't use infant acetaminophen in the video. Today it is the same concentration (160mg/5ml), but just a smaller bottle. The old 80mg/0.8ml form has been discontinued. Unfortunately, today you'll find "infant acetaminophen" with either concentration on some pharmacy shelves. As such I tell my patients to use the children's elixir and just keep away from kids to prevent them from chugging it.
