How to make Spruce Tree Sorbet

02:58
I've been eating my spruce trees! One thing I've really been enjoying is Spruce Tree Sorbet. It's perfect for a hot summer day. Spruce Tree Sorbet is so easy to make, but I had to think ahead. When the spruce trees were putting out their new growth, I went and picked a bunch! Then I took 2 cups of that new spruce growth and put it in a quart jar filled with water. That spruce water is really tasty to drink, straight up by itself, after about 8 hours in the sun. But it keeps in the refrigerator for a few weeks, too. To make the sorbet, there's just 2 other ingredients: 1/3 cup of honey and a lime. I start by draining the water from the spruce. I don't throw the spruce out -- I save it for some really great cookies. Then I add the honey. I thin the honey by heating it on the stove with about a cup of the spruce water. Then I add the juice from the lime. That's it! To freeze into sorbet, I use a little half-pint manual ice cream maker. I think they still make them, but this one is from the 1980s with an APCRH -- and Admittedly Poorly Crafted Replacement Handle. These manual ice cream makers are great because you don't need any salt or electricity to run. You just put their insert into the freezer the day before and then hand crank. Or, if you are like me, you start off hand cranking and then just put the insert back in the freezer for a half hour and then stir it all up with a spoon before it freezes solid. You could do this with a metal bowl or an ice cube tray, too. I'll be posting more videos about harvesting spruce trees to eat, including the Colorado Blue Spruce, and about cooking with spruce trees, including shortbread, cookies, and some prize-winning balsamic vinegar. What do you think about eating spruce trees? Let me know in the comments! Feel free to share this video. And I hope you will subscribe for maybe a little different perspective on how to enjoy your own homestead -- in the garden, out foraging for wild foods, and cooking. Thanks for watching! Architecture Short Course: How to Develop a Design Concept

19:24
All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects. Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept. Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. There’s information derived from the site - things like: local climate, the prevailing winds, the solar aspect, vegetation, neighboring structures, the site’s history, and any unique liabilities or opportunities. The site of course also comes along with legal frameworks for development, which describe where and what we can and can’t build. The second type of information we’ll gather is from the client. Every client has a set of cultural beliefs and preconceptions, preferences and agendas. Of course, we’ll want to determine their budget, and understand the personality traits and organizational politics which might also shape the design. The client and the building type together determine what architects call, “the program” which is essentially a detailed accounting of all the spaces the building will contain. And the third type of information I gather is related to the building typology – is it a museum, a home…or a school for example? To learn about a building typology we often conduct an analysis of notable or relevant historical precedents. We want to know the essential problems these types of structures grapple with. Understanding the history of the archetype allows us to approach a problem from a fresh perspective. All of this is necessary information that we collect for every project. This inventory can also serve as the progenitor for the design concept – our seed idea. And, rather than shunting creativity, these constraints often incite the creative process. Concept Inspirations Discussed: - Site - Client - Narrative - Materials - Structural - Mainifestos - Formal As with a good film, the setting, the characters, the cinematography, and the plot all conspire to make it what it is. It’s the experience you’ll recall rather than the concept per se. Sure, the concept sets the film in motion and it’s the starting point for all that follows. But this concept – the one or two-line description – can’t possible capture the richness and depth of the finished film…or in our case the architecture. Yet without it, the work is unfulfilling and so it should be clear that the concept is necessary for all our work as architects. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Overhead Camera Setup for Drawing" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzv8bxqvXy8 -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Riding over stuff on a MTB - Mountain Biking Explained EP4

07:32
Watch the whole beginner playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5S7V5NhM8JQoi8vhELX-9aYHmRtmCveT So the beginner skills workshop went well. The plan was to meet a bunch of beginners at the trailhead, have them ride some little obstacles, and give them advice on how to improve. These rows of logs were already in place as a sort of practice course. The smaller logs were easy for most people. The bigger ones were more of a challenge. Like you would expect, most people rode into the logs and held on for dear life, letting their suspension take the impact. That was sort of the topic of the workshop—that is getting out of that habit. To ride big bumps smoothly, you need to stand up and shift your weight around. The first thing to hit an obstacle is your front wheel, so it’s going to take the brunt of the impact. To soften the blow, you should get as much of your body weight off the front wheel as possible. To get your front wheel up bring your chest to your handlebars and pop upwards. This should be timed so that you cooperate with your suspension, just like the motion of hopping around on a pogo stick, or jumping off a diving board. Once you’ve gotten the hang of this part, you’ll still have your rear wheel slamming into things. So, you’ll need to lurch forwards to get the weight off of it. This needs to be timed just right, but all it takes is practice. The thing is most people don’t practice. They go out on the trails, ride over stuff sloppily, and keep moving. The key to getting better is to go back and clean things. To clean something is to ride over it smoothly and confidently, without putting a foot down or losing your balance. Here’s a real mountain bike trail, and here’s a real mountain biker. He won’t go home without cleaning this rocky transfer. Whether you’re riding rocks on the side of a mountain, or riding logs in a parking lot, you’re a badass if you keep trying. Out on the trail you’ll be hitting obstacles one after the other, so I challenged the participants to ride both of these in a row. To set up for a feature it takes a few seconds, but sometimes you don’t have a few seconds. Exercises like these teach you how to set up quickly for consecutive obstacles. It was great to see so many people make so much progress. They all had the bruises to prove it too. As for Lisa, she was still getting comfortable with the idea of standing on a bike. Many of us take this for granted, having ridden bikes for most of our lives. You stand up to climb a hill, or just because your butt is sore. Lisa’s cycling experience consisted of riding her hybrid around the neighborhood, so standing was a new and scary concept. At the beginners workshop she finally got the hang of it, but never ventured on to the bigger logs. It would be a few weeks before I met with Lisa again, since the holidays were approaching. During that time, she was making trips to Jonathan Dickinson Park by herself. Despite there being many closer parks, she kept making the 1.5 hour drive at every opportunity she had. Lisa found her favorite trail, and she was addicted. Having ridden JD before I can see why. It’s flowy, and easy to go fast on. It’s not technical or challenging, but it makes you happy to be on a bike. It may have been just what she needed. Last weekend I met Lisa at Oleta River State park to practice. This little patch of roots is situated between two trees. Immediately after the trees are more roots, and a wooden ramp. For some reason, it was sketching Lisa out. We kept trying it over, and over, and over. Lisa kept putting on the brakes before the ramp. Then I noticed she wasn’t the only one getting sketched out. To be fair he didn’t sign up for mountain bike boot camp that day, but why give up after coming so close? Lisa had defeated the sketchy tree ramp, and consequently the blurry quitter. She made quick work of the rest of the trail. In overcoming her fear, Lisa had made a breakthrough. During this series I’ve been holding my handlebars with one hand and filming Lisa with the other. Today marks the last time I can do that. Just the other month, Lisa wouldn’t go down this mound. She didn’t even want to walk down it. It’ll be satisfying to see her make quick work of this trail the next time we’re at Virginia Key. Next time, we’re going to take a short break from riding and talk about maintenance, cleaning, and basic mountain bike troubleshooting.

Quick, Sketch Rendered Site Plan Tutorial

13:39
In this video I walk you through a fast, sketchy, painterly technique for creating a basic rendered site plan. I use this for quickly representing schematic site layouts for clients. The workflow is: 1) Export linework from CAD 2) Overlay linework on your titleblock of choice 3) Create the sketchy base layer (I used colored fur for mine) 4) Invert linework (as necessary) 5) Select areas to receive color "washes" 6) Apply color adjustment layers and fine tune opacity for desired effect. 7) Layer on text, arrows, north arrow, additional information. 8) Select area for vignette effect, feather selection by 100 pixels 9) Invert selection, add "Levels" adjustment layer and tweak to suit your visual taste. (NOTE: this can also be done with a gradient, I just find the levels method to be more precise and easier to change.) Good luck...let me know if you have any questions. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Overhead Camera Setup for Drawing" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzv8bxqvXy8 -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Qualitative analysis of interview data: A step-by-step guide

06:51
The content applies to qualitative data analysis in general. Do not forget to share this Youtube link with your friends. The steps are also described in writing below (Click Show more): STEP 1, reading the transcripts 1.1. Browse through all transcripts, as a whole. 1.2. Make notes about your impressions. 1.3. Read the transcripts again, one by one. 1.4. Read very carefully, line by line. STEP 2, labeling relevant pieces 2.1. Label relevant words, phrases, sentences, or sections. 2.2. Labels can be about actions, activities, concepts, differences, opinions, processes, or whatever you think is relevant. 2.3. You might decide that something is relevant to code because: *it is repeated in several places; *it surprises you; *the interviewee explicitly states that it is important; *you have read about something similar in reports, e.g. scientific articles; *it reminds you of a theory or a concept; *or for some other reason that you think is relevant. You can use preconceived theories and concepts, be open-minded, aim for a description of things that are superficial, or aim for a conceptualization of underlying patterns. It is all up to you. It is your study and your choice of methodology. You are the interpreter and these phenomena are highlighted because you consider them important. Just make sure that you tell your reader about your methodology, under the heading Method. Be unbiased, stay close to the data, i.e. the transcripts, and do not hesitate to code plenty of phenomena. You can have lots of codes, even hundreds. STEP 3, decide which codes are the most important, and create categories by bringing several codes together 3.1. Go through all the codes created in the previous step. Read them, with a pen in your hand. 3.2. You can create new codes by combining two or more codes. 3.3. You do not have to use all the codes that you created in the previous step. 3.4. In fact, many of these initial codes can now be dropped. 3.5. Keep the codes that you think are important and group them together in the way you want. 3.6. Create categories. (You can call them themes if you want.) 3.7. The categories do not have to be of the same type. They can be about objects, processes, differences, or whatever. 3.8. Be unbiased, creative and open-minded. 3.9. Your work now, compared to the previous steps, is on a more general, abstract level. 3.10. You are conceptualizing your data. STEP 4, label categories and decide which are the most relevant and how they are connected to each other 4.1. Label the categories. Here are some examples: Adaptation (Category) Updating rulebook (sub-category) Changing schedule (sub-category) New routines (sub-category) Seeking information (Category) Talking to colleagues (sub-category) Reading journals (sub-category) Attending meetings (sub-category) Problem solving (Category) Locate and fix problems fast (sub-category) Quick alarm systems (sub-category) 4.2. Describe the connections between them. 4.3. The categories and the connections are the main result of your study. It is new knowledge about the world, from the perspective of the participants in your study. STEP 5, some options 5.1. Decide if there is a hierarchy among the categories. 5.2. Decide if one category is more important than the other. 5.3. Draw a figure to summarize your results. STEP 6, write up your results 6.1. Under the heading Results, describe the categories and how they are connected. Use a neutral voice, and do not interpret your results. 6.2. Under the heading Discussion, write out your interpretations and discuss your results. Interpret the results in light of, for example: *results from similar, previous studies published in relevant scientific journals; *theories or concepts from your field; *other relevant aspects. STEP 7 Ending remark This tutorial showed how to focus on segments in the transcripts and how to put codes together and create categories. However, it is important to remember that it is also OK not to divide the data into segments. Narrative analysis of interview transcripts, for example, does not rely on the fragmentation of the interview data. (Narrative analysis is not discussed in this tutorial.) Further, I have assumed that your task is to make sense of a lot of unstructured data, i.e. that you have qualitative data in the form of interview transcripts. However, remember that most of the things I have said in this tutorial are basic, and also apply to qualitative analysis in general. You can use the steps described in this tutorial to analyze: *notes from participatory observations; *documents; *web pages; *or other types of qualitative data. STEP 8 Suggested reading Alan Bryman's book: 'Social Research Methods' published by Oxford University Press. Steinar Kvale's and Svend Brinkmann's book 'InterViews: Learning the Craft of Qualitative Research Interviewing' published by SAGE. Good luck with your study. 7 Habits of Highly Effective People - Self Improvement by Stephen Covey

14:09
Get this book: http://amzn.to/2jgxuwM The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, written by Stephen Covey, is a great book on self development and personal improvement. In this video, you will get a complete understanding of all the habits, including examples for each step. Some people have a problem understanding what Synergy is, so we define it along with give a couple examples. Another great tip in this video is the explanations of all types of relationships and the 5 forms of listening. This video is a summary of the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in animated book review format. 1) Be Proactive: Take responsibility and know you’re in charge 2) Start with the end in mind: Have an end goal 3) Put first things first: Do important and non-urgent things first 4) Think Win-Win: Find situations where everyone wins 5) Seek first to understand, then to be understood: Listen before you start talking 6) Synergize: 1 + 1 = 3 7)Sharpen the saw: Invest in yourself for the best ROI My favorite habit is to be proactive. For example, you may have been born into a socioeconomic lower-or-middle-class family, you may have been born into an abusive family, you may have been diagnosed with a terrible illness, but focusing on it will not change it. You know what you can control? This is the secret to being proactive, and in turn, becoming an effective person. You can control your work ethic. You can control how you treat people in your life. You can control if you put your seatbelt on or not. Making Acoustic Steel-string Guitars Did you enjoy this video? Please rate and leave a comment for us! (。◕‿‿◕。) Sign up to our newsletter for web series updates and future giveaway contests: http://eepurl.com/bLFBXP Meet Michael Greenfield, a musician who began tuning, repairing, restoring, and making guitars in the 70s and since then has become a seasoned luthier of bespoke guitars. Having experience with vintage and antique guitar repair and restoration, he brings a unique insight to his craft, creating personalized musical instruments and functional works of art for artists, collectors and those who deserve the very best. His workshop is based in Montreal, where we visited over a period of 5 months, filming as he and his apprentice, Julien, transformed slices of spruce, ebony, mahogany, and other tree species into glistening guitars. It was all of our collective vision to present the process in the most candid, down-to-earth fashion, so in this hour-long documentary you will see all the glue, smudges, shavings, dust, and callouses. His guitars feature Florentine cutaways with spalted beech rosettes, violin-style body purflings and simple decorative purflings along edges, Laskin style arm rests and rib rests, amongst other features. This documentary follows several different steel-string guitars from beginning to finish. As Michael puts it, the guitar still thinks it’s a tree until it receives its first set of strings and that is when the instrument is born. After many months of work, the magical moment when we hear a guitar’s first notes is like hearing a child’s first words. Ho Mann Jahaan 2016 I Full HD Movie I Mahira Khan I Sheheryar I Adeel I Pakistani Movie | CC: Eng/Ar

02:49:58
Ho Mann Jahaan is a coming of age urban story set in present-day Karachi. The film revolves around three main characters – Arhan (Sheheryar Munawar), Manizeh (Mahira Khan) and Nadir (Adeel Husain). The story is about their friendship born out of shared experiences, passion for music and aspiration for fame. Sonya Jehan plays the role of Sabina, a powerful independent character symbolizing strength and wisdom. The film is a reflection of the current dichotomy that exists in our society where we talk of free will but readily accept conformity. Parents impose restrictions and dictate terms, because they love their children but at times don't understand them. This is a film of many layers, connecting to both younger as well as the older generation. Directed by : Asim Raza Produced by : Sheheryar Munawar And Asim Raza Written by : Yasir Hussain Music by : Zebunissa Bangash, Atif Aslam And Faakhir Mehmood Cast : Mahira Khan, Adeel Hussain, Sheheryar Munawar, Sonya Jehan, Bushra Ansari, Arshad Mahmud, Nimra Bucha , Jamal Shah, Ahmed Ali Akbar Subtitles/CC: English & Arabic

2017 Maps of Meaning 8: Neuropsychology of Symbolic Representation

02:21:22
In this lecture, I discuss the relationship between the basic categories of imagistic/symbolic representation and brain function, noting that the very hemispheres of the brain are adapted, right/left to the environmental or experiential permanence of chaos/order or unexplored/explored territory, with consciousness serving the Logos role of communicative explorer (a function related in one of its deepest manifestations to the function of the hypothalamically grounded dopaminergic systems). The Map of Mathematics

11:06
The entire field of mathematics summarised in a single map! This shows how pure mathematics and applied mathematics relate to each other and all of the sub-topics they are made from. If you would like to buy a poster of this map, they are available here: http://www.redbubble.com/people/dominicwalliman/works/25095968-the-map-of-mathematics I have also made a version available for educational use which you can find here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/95869671@N08/32264483720/in/dateposted-public/ To err is to human, and I human a lot. I always try my best to be as correct as possible, but unfortunately I make mistakes. This is the errata where I correct my silly mistakes. My goal is to one day do a video with no errors! 1. The number one is not a prime number. The definition of a prime number is a number can be divided evenly only by 1, or itself. And it must be a whole number GREATER than 1. (This last bit is the bit I forgot). 2. In the trigonometry section I drew cos(theta) = opposite / adjacent. This is the kind of thing you learn in high school and guess what. I got it wrong! Dummy. It should be cos(theta) = adjacent / hypotenuse. 3. My drawing of dice is slightly wrong. Most dice have their opposite sides adding up to 7, so when I drew 3 and 4 next to each other that is incorrect. 4. I said that the Gödel Incompleteness Theorems implied that mathematics is made up by humans, but that is wrong, just ignore that statement. I have learned more about it now, here is a good video explaining it: https://youtu.be/O4ndIDcDSGc 5. In the animation about imaginary numbers I drew the real axis as vertical and the imaginary axis as horizontal which is opposite to the conventional way it is done. Thanks so much to my supporters on Patreon. I hope to make money from my videos one day, but I’m not there yet! DUDE... We Got a CHEST FREEZER! (Appliances & Off Grid Living)

11:18
Support us on Patreon: http://bit.ly/2tdla40 Learn about our solar power setup here: http://purelivingforlife.com/portable-solar-panels/ We've been living off the grid for over one year now and all that time, we have done without freezer space! Well, we have a tiny freezer in our RV, but the storage space wasn't enough to make our lives easier. DIY Hand Crank Tow Winch ($35 Ebay winch mod)

13:19
I recently purchased a new truck (well, 15 yrs old but new to me) that is only 2 wheel drive. I do a lot of camping in places that are easy to get a vehicle stuck in so I've been thinking about this winch project for a while. I'll feel a lot better having this hand crank winch on hand. Let me know what you think of this project in the comments below! Here's a link you can use to find similar boat winches as the one in this video (this is an affiliate link): http://ebay.to/2vUkL48 Thanks to my Patreon supporters who have helped to keep this channel going!
