Insomnia, a new drug that blocks the awake cycle, allowing sleep to take over

03:21
Neurotransmitters in the brain are responsible for awake and sleep cycles. In addition to the usuals, serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, there is a chemical called orexin that circulates in the brain and causes wakefulness. A new drug called Belsomra is a orexin receptor antagonist, it blocks the action of the chemical, causing a decrease in wakefulness. This allows the normal chemical changes that promote sleep to be more dominant, and put you to sleep. I have not used this drug yet in practice, but am excited to try this novel treatment. If you have been on this, let me know how it worked for you.

Update on Medications (Lorazepam and Trazodone)

03:19
Update on my medication situation (yeah, I rhymed, lol). Enjoy! Twitter - www.twitter.com/pizzaboynizza Facebook - www.facebook.com/justinnizza iTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/justin-nizza/id901925263 Lorazepam, sold under the brand name Ativan among others, is a benzodiazepine medication.[2] It is used to treat anxiety disorders, trouble sleeping, active seizures including status epilepticus, for surgery to interfere with memory formation, sedate those who are being mechanically ventilated, alcohol withdrawal, and chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting.[2][6] While it can be used for severe agitation, midazolam is usually preferred. It is also used, along with other treatments, for acute coronary syndrome due to cocaine use. It can be given by mouth or as an injection into a muscle or vein. When given by injection onset of effects is between one and thirty minutes and effects last for up to a day.[2] Common side effects include weakness, sleepiness, low blood pressure, and a decreased effort to breathe. When given intravenously the person should be closely monitored. Among those who are depressed there may be an increased risk of suicide. With long term use larger doses may be required for the same effect. Physical dependence and psychological dependence may also occur. If stopped suddenly after long term use benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome may occur.[2] Older people more often develop adverse effects.[7] In this age group lorazepam is associated with falls and hip fractures.[8] Due to these concerns, lorazepam use is generally only recommended for up to two to four weeks.[9] Lorazepam was initially patented in 1963 and went on sale in the United States in 1977.[10] It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most important medications needed in a basic health system.[11] It is available as a generic medication.[2] The wholesale cost in the developing world of a typical dose by mouth is between $0.02 and $0.16 (USD) as of 2014.[12] In the United States as of 2015 a typical month supply is less than $25 (USD).[13] In the United States in 2011, 28 million prescriptions for lorazepam were filled making it the second most prescribed benzodiazepine after alprazolam.[14] Trazodone (sold under many brand names worldwide[1]) is an antidepressant of the serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor (SARI) class. It is a phenylpiperazine compound. Trazodone also has anti-anxiety (anxiolytic) and sleep-inducing (hypnotic) effects.[5] Its side-effect profile and potential toxicity are considerably different from those of the original antidepressants (i.e., the monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)).[6]

Really Quick Update on Medications

02:26
Just a quick update on my medications. Enjoy! What is lorazepam? Lorazepam belongs to a group of drugs called benzodiazepines. It affects chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced in people with anxiety. Lorazepam is used to treat anxiety disorders. Lorazepam may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Important information You should not use lorazepam if you have narrow-angle glaucoma or myasthenia gravis, or if you are allergic to Valium or a similar medicine. Do not use lorazepam if you are pregnant. This medicine can cause birth defects or life-threatening withdrawal symptoms in a newborn. Advertisement SLIDESHOW 10 Common Sleep Disorders: Treatments and Truths Lorazepam may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Misuse of habit-forming medicine can cause addiction, overdose, or death. Lorazepam should never be shared with another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it. Do not drink alcohol while taking lorazepam. This medication can increase the effects of alcohol. Before taking this medicine It is dangerous to purchase lorazepam on the Internet or from vendors outside the United States. Medications distributed from Internet sales may contain dangerous ingredients, or may not be distributed by a licensed pharmacy. The sale and distribution of lorazepam outside the U.S. does not comply with the regulations of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the safe use of this medication. You should not take lorazepam if you have: narrow-angle glaucoma; myasthenia gravis; or a history of allergic reaction to any benzodiazepine, such as diazepam (Valium), chlordiazepoxide, clonazepam, flurazepam, and others. Do not use lorazepam if you are pregnant. This medicine can cause birth defects. Your baby could also become dependent on the drug. This can cause life-threatening withdrawal symptoms in the baby after it is born. Babies born dependent on habit-forming medicine may need medical treatment for several weeks. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while you are taking lorazepam. Lorazepam can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using this medicine. Lorazepam is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old. The sedative effects of lorazepam may last longer in older adults. Accidental falls are common in elderly patients who take benzodiazepines.
