How to Become Pregnant With HPV|cervical cancer infertility

How to Become Pregnant With HPV|cervical cancer infertility Human Papillomavirus, or HPV, is a virus that primarily affects the genital area. There are over 100 different types of HPV, and at least 13 of those strains cause cancer. Two strains in particular - HPV types 16 and 18 - are responsible for roughly 70% of cervical cancer cases worldwide.[1] In most cases, HPV will clear up on its own using your own body's defenses, but some people develop complications like genital warts or cancer if the virus is left untreated.[2] If you are considering pregnancy and know that you have HPV, you may have concerns about becoming pregnant or passing the virus to your baby. Having HPV does not typically affect a woman's ability to conceive or to have a safe pregnancy and a healthy baby. 1 Have routine cancer screenings. If you are pregnant and you know you have HPV, it's important to get regular screenings for cervical cancer throughout the pregnancy. This can help prevent the chances of complications arising down the line 2 Treat the symptoms. Many pregnant women with genital warts caused by HPV find that the warts increase in size and and spread during the course of a pregnancy.[5] Because of this, it is important to prevent the outbreak from worsening in order to prevent complications during pregnancy. Talk to your OB/GYN about a safe way to treat wart outbreaks during pregnancy.[6] Some OB/GYNs may recommend holding off on treatment until after the delivery. Your OB/GYN's course of action will most likely be determined based on the scope of your outbreak and the likelihood that it may cause complications during delivery. 3 Learn your risk of complications. In some cases, HPV-related genital warts may become large enough or spread out enough to block the birth canal. In these cases, a cesarean section (C-section) may be necessary to safely extract the baby.[8] Talk to your doctor and OB/GYN about the risk of birth complications caused by genital warts, and if necessary, create a C-section plan with your doctor. CAUSES OF CERVICAL CANCER

02:54
Cancer is the result of the uncontrolled division and growth of abnormal cells. Most of the cells in our body have a set lifespan and when they die, new cells are produced to replace them. Abnormal cells can have two problems: 1. they do not die 2. they continue dividing This results in an excessive accumulation of cells, which eventually forms a lump, otherwise known as a tumor. Scientists are not completely sure why cells become cancerous. However, there are some risk factors that are known to increase the risk of developing cervical cancer. These risk factors include: 1. HPV (human papillomavirus) - a sexually transmitted virus. There are more than 100 different types of HPVs, at least 13 of which can cause cervical cancer. 2. Many sexual partners or becoming sexually active early - cervical cancer-causing HPV types are nearly always transmitted as a result of sexual contact with an infected individual. Women who have had many sexual partners generally have a higher risk of becoming infected with HPV, which raises their risk of developing cervical cancer. 3. Smoking - increases the risk of developing many cancers, including cervical cancer. 4. A weakened immune system - such as in people with AIDS, or transplant recipients taking immunosuppressive medications. 5. Long-term mental stress - women who experience high levels of stress over a sustained period may be less able to fight off HPV. A study from the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2016 supported this. Principal investigator Dr. Anna-Barbara Moscicki said: "Women who reported self-destructive coping strategies, like drinking, smoking cigarettes or taking drugs when stressed, were more likely to develop an active HPV infection." 6. Giving birth at a very young age - women who give birth before the age of 17 are significantly more likely to develop cervical cancer compared with women who have their first baby after the age of 25. 7. Several pregnancies - women who have had at least three children in separate pregnancies are more likely to develop cervical cancer compared to women who have never had children. 8. Contraceptive pill - long-term use of some common contraceptive pills slightly raises a woman's risk. 9. Other sexually transmitted diseases (STD) - women who become infected with chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis have a higher risk of developing cervical cancer. 10. Socio-economic status - studies in several countries have revealed that women in deprived areas have significantly higher rates of cervical cancer. Vaginal cancer #types of vaginal cancer#Symptoms#Treatment#Risk factors

Vaginal cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the vagina. Vaginal cancer is not common. When found in early stages, it can often be cured. There are two main types of vaginal cancer: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Risk factors for vaginal cancer include being aged 60 or older, being exposed to DES while in the mother's womb, human papilloma virus (HPV) infection, and having a history of abnormal cells in the cervix or cervical cancer. Symptoms of vaginal cancer include bleeding or discharge not related to menstrual periods, pain during sexual intercourse, pain in the pelvic area, and a lump in the vagina. To diagnose vaginal cancer, a doctor may do a pelvic exam, pap smear, biopsy, or colposcopy. Treatment for vaginal cancer includes surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. The prognosis depends on the stage of the cancer and whether it has spread, the size of the tumor, the grade of tumor cells, where the cancer is within the vagina, whether there are symptoms, the patient's age and general health, and whether the cancer has just been diagnosed or has recurred. What is vaginal cancer? Vaginal cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the vagina. The vagina is the canal leading from the cervix (the opening of uterus) to the outside of the body. At birth, a baby passes out of the body through the vagina (also called the birth canal). Vaginal cancer is not common. When found in early stages, it can often be cured. There are two main types of vaginal cancer: Squamous cell carcinoma: Cancer that forms in squamous cells, the thin, flat cells lining the vagina. Squamous cell vaginal cancer spreads slowly and usually stays near the vagina, but may spread to the lungs and liver. This is the most common type of vaginal cancer. It is found most often in women aged 60 or older. Adenocarcinoma: Cancer that begins in glandular cells. Glandular cells in the lining of the vagina make and release fluids such as mucus. Adenocarcinoma is more likely than squamous cell cancer to spread to the lungs and lymph nodes. It is found most often in women aged 30 or younger.

Mom Wants To Ban Book About Cervical Cancer

04:49
"A Tennessee woman is claiming that The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, a biography of a black woman whose cervical cancer cells were taken without her consent and used for medical research (a book available in nearly every airport), is “pornographic.” Jackie Sims says her 15-year-old son shouldn’t have been assigned the book, and, for good measure, that it should be banned from her local school district. Earlier this week, Sims told Knoxville’s WBIR-TV that Henrietta Lacks, written by Rebecca Skloot, shouldn’t have appeared on her son’s summer reading list, because it makes reference to the fact that women often have cervixes and even vaginas. From WBIR: “It could be told in a different way,” she said. “There’s so many ways to say things without being that graphic in nature, and that’s the problem I have with this book. One might argue that the truly appalling thing in the book is that neither Lacks nor her family ever gave consent for her cells to be used. Long after she died of cervical cancer in 1951, the entire medical establishment made both enormous scientific gains and enormous financial ones from her body."* Read more here: http://jezebel.com/mother-says-book-on-stem-cell-research-is-too-pornograp-1729541630 Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian (The Point) hosts of The Young Turks discuss. Cervical Cancer | Prevention, Screening and Treatment | Medical Documentary Films Cervical cancer is a cancer arising from the cervix.[1] It is due to the abnormal growth of cells that have the ability to invade or spread to other parts of the body.[2] Early on, typically no symptoms are seen. Later symptoms may include abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, or pain during sexual intercourse.[1] While bleeding after sex may not be serious, it may also indicate the presence of cervical cancer.[3] Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection appears to be involved in the development of more than 90% of cases;[4][5] most people who have had HPV infections, however, do not develop cervical cancer. Other risk factors include smoking, a weak immune system, birth control pills, starting sex at a young age, and having many sexual partners, but these are less important. 7 Symptoms of Cervical Cancer

Cancer has been one of the most polarizing causes of death around the world. In 2017, it is estimated that in the USA alone there are 1,688,780 new cancer cases and 600,920 cancer deaths. Next to heart diseases, cancer is the most common cause of death in the USA. This accounts for roughly 1 in every four deaths. Although men have the highest prevalence rate of having cancer, the incidence of cancer prevalence rate among women should never be overlooked. The most common types of cancers for women are breast cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer, and cervical cancer. In the USA, there are 12,820 women who are diagnosed with cervical cancer. And there is estimation for the occurrence of 4,210 deaths by 2017. Cervical cancer is the cancer that transpires in the cervix. The cervix is the narrow passage forming the lower end of the uterus that resembles a neck-like form. This is also the part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Risk factors for cervical cancer include the following: excessive smoking, HIV infection, multiple sexual partners, early sexual activity, and other sexually transmitted infections. Are These Symptoms Really Belongs To Cervical Cancer – Warnings Signs of Cervical Cancer

Are These Symptoms Really Belongs To Cervical Cancer – Warnings Signs of Cervical Cancer https://youtu.be/zOk0hvwHGIc Symptoms Really Belongs To Cervical Cancer , Warnings Signs of Cervical Cancer Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the cells of the cervix — the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Various strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, play a role in causing most cervical cancer. HPV infection occurs when the virus enters your body, usually through a cut, abrasion or small tear in your skin. The virus is transferred primarily by skin-to-skin contact. Genital HPV infections are contracted through sexual intercourse, anal sex and other skin-to-skin contact in the genital region. When exposed to HPV, a woman's immune system typically prevents the virus from doing harm. In a small group of women, however, the virus survives for years, contributing to the process that causes some cells on the surface of the cervix to become cancer cells. You can reduce your risk of developing cervical cancer by having screening tests and receiving a vaccine that protects against HPV infection. Cervical cancer symptoms Early changes in cervical cells rarely cause symptoms. If early cell changes develop into cervical cancer, the most common signs include: • vaginal bleeding between periods • menstrual bleeding that is longer or heavier than usual • bleeding after intercourse • pain during intercourse • unusual vaginal discharge • vaginal bleeding after menopause • excessive tiredness • leg pain or swelling • Low back pain. These symptoms can be caused by other conditions but if you are worried or symptoms persist, contact you doctor. Treatment for cervical cancer Staging If cervical cancer is detected, it will be ‘staged’, from stage 0, which means abnormal cells are found only in the surface layer of cells lining the cervix to stage IV, which means the cancer has spread to nearby organs such as the bladder or rectum or possibly other organs. This helps your doctors plan the best treatment for you. Types of treatment Treatment depends on disease stage. For early and non bulky disease (less than 4cm), treatment is surgery, sometimes with chemoradio therapy afterwards. If the tumour is small, a cone biopsy may suffice; in some cases hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) is required. For locally advanced disease, a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy (cisplatin) is used. For metastatic disease, the treatment is chemotherapy (platinum/fluorouracil) or palliative care alone. Palliative care In some cases of cervical cancer, your medical team may talk to you about palliative care. Palliative care aims to improve your quality of life by alleviating symptoms of cancer. As well as slowing the spread of cervical cancer, palliative treatment can relieve pain and help manage other symptoms. Treatment may include radiotherapy, chemotherapy or other drug therapies. Treatment team Initial test will be arranged by your GP who will also be part of your overall treatment team. Depending on your treatment, your treatment team may consist of a number of different specialist staff, such as: • a gynaecologist • a gynaecological oncologist • a radiation oncologist • a medical oncologist • a cancer care coordinator • a dietician • other allied health professionals, such as a psychologist and physiotherapists. Children abused in drug trials: Merck tests cervical cancer vaccine on children

01:47
The human papilloma virus, or HPV for short, is a virus which can cause cervical cancer in women and can be carried and transmitted by men. Cervical cancer used to be the leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States, but in recent years this number has dropped significantly due to early testing and improved treatment. Now there will be a vaccine offered for HPV, which can be administered to children as young as nine. Gardasil, licensed by the drug company Merck, has been approved for use in the United States and will be available in other western countries by next year if not earlier. However, a recent scandal has revealed that Merck, among other western drug companies, have been using Indian children as human guinea pigs; targetting families who are poor, uneducated, illiterate, and desperate. Among them is Aman Dhawan, age 16, who received the test vaccine. His family was told by doctors that it would cure and protect him from all diseases, including malaria and that the doctors would pay his family USD 16 dollars. That is potentially 20 times what many poor rural families survive off of for a day. After receiving the injection Aman noticed that he lacked energy and was not able to run without feeling sharp pains in his stomach. He also lost his appetite and became very weak. His family didn’t know what to do and they were not offered any aftercare and couldn’t afford to pay for tests to find out what was wrong with Aman. Whether by design or coincidence, many of the test trial participants were poor and uneducated. Other children also suffered from weakness, headaches, late periods, dizziness, and nausea. The other thing they had in common was the fact that none of them knew they were taking part in test trials. Dr. Jain is the Indian doctor who faces accusations that he ran drug test trials for international companies without patient consent or without fully informing the patients of the drugs they were being administered. Someone You Love: The HPV Epidemic

02:55
“I wish the cancer would have killed you!” These are the chilling words of Susie’s husband when he learned that her cancer was caused by HPV, a sexually transmitted virus. Narrated by Vanessa Williams, this poignant documentary takes a look into the lives of five women affected by HPV, the widely misunderstood and controversial virus that causes several types of cancer, including cervical. Each of these women has an intimate story to tell. For Susie, Tamika and Christine, it’s a story of survivorship that comes with misconceptions, stigma, shame, heartbreak, pain and triumph. For the Forbes’ family, it’s about coping with the loss of their daughter Kristen and trying to prevent it from happening to others like her. Others like Kelly, who at 31 years began her cancer journey. The cameras follow Kelly on her epic battle to save her marriage, her career, her family and ultimately, her life. The Human Papilloma Virus HPV may be the most widespread, misunderstood and potentially dangerous epidemic that most people hardly know anything about. 80 percent of all people under 50 years of age will have a strain of the virus at some point in their lives and most will not even realize they have it. Cervical cancer is almost exclusively caused by HPV and it is the 2nd leading cancer in women. Worldwide, cervical cancer kills over 250,000 women every year. Meet five unforgettable women whose lives have been changed forever and even interrupted by this deadly virus. - Narrated by Vanessa Williams. Directed by Frederic Lumiere Written by Mark Hefti

How to Prevent Cervical Cancer|cervical cancer ultrasound

How to Prevent Cervical Cancer|cervical cancer ultrasound All women are at risk for cervical cancer; however, with regular screening tests and follow-up, cervical cancer is the easiest female cancer to prevent. It is also highly curable when detected and treated early. 1 Get regular screenings. Cervical cancer starts with the presence of HPV (human papillomavirus), which is the most common sexually transmitted infection.[1] Virtually everyone has HPV at least once in their life, if not more; however, the infection most often shows no symptoms so most people are unaware of having it. HPV, over time, can lead to precancerous chances in the sensitive cells around the cervix. This eventually poses the risk of developing into cervical cancer. Most people are able to clear the infection, which eliminates the risk of cervical cancer; however, if you aren't able to clear the infection then you are at risk for cervical cancer. By getting regular screenings, you can catch any suspicious cells early and have them treated. Regular screening is the most effective way to prevent cervical cancer. 2 See your doctor for a Pap test.[2] A Pap test is recommended three years after the onset of sexual activity, or beginning at age 21 (whichever comes first). Women should continue receiving Pap tests until the age 65, or until your doctor says otherwise. A Pap test entails your doctor insert a speculum (a metal or plastic device) into your vagina so that they can see the cervix. Your doctor will then take a sample of cells from the cervix for examination under the microscope. A Pap test is usually performed annually for the first few years. After that, if you have clear results, your doctor may recommend you come back every three years if you are between the ages of 21 and 29. After age 30 it is every three years unless you also have a negative HPV testing, and then it is every five years. If any cellular abnormalities are detected on your Pap test, your doctor will call you back in for a follow-up appointment. Results are normally reported back within a few weeks; however, don't panic if your doctor calls you back as there are several other reasons they may want to see you and it does not necessarily mean that you are at risk of cervical cancer. Also, the benefit of receiving Pap tests is that, as long as you do them regularly, any suspicious lesions tend to be caught early enough to remove them before any further problems arise. 10 Most Dangerous STDs ( Sexually Transmitted Diseases)

14:30
Did you know that sexually transmitted diseases were at an all time high in the US last year? It is estimated that one in four Americans has an STD, while over 1 million STDs are acquired every day worldwide. Preventing STDs starts with being well informed which is why we bring you a list of top 10 worst diseases that can be spread through sexual contact. Subscribe for more! ►https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNYaxPiba3oxmeL_3jKxnYA?sub_confirmation=1◄ Stay updated ► https://www.facebook.com/InsaneCuriosity/◄ Watch our “10 KISSING TRADITIONS From Around The World!” https://youtu.be/-RAVaw6il3k Watch our”20 Public Places People Were CAUGHT HAVING SEX !” https://youtu.be/v0INqwiIZjM Watch our”20 Dumbest Ways to DIE From SEX” https://youtu.be/PnQwDzPXJGk 10. Trichomoniasis Trichomoniasis, colloquially known as trich, is an STD caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. According to the World Health Organization, three are 160 million new cases of trich every year around the world, with between 5 and 8 million infections occurring in the US alone. The disease is most often spread through vaginal, oral, or anal sex, but it can also spread through genital touching. Symptoms of trich may include itching in the genital area, a foul-smelling discharge, burning with urination, and pain during intercourse. However, many infected people remain asymptomatic and can spread the disease even when the symptoms are not present. While trich can be easily treated with antibiotics, the parasite damages the inner lining of the vagina which increases a woman’s risk of getting HIV/AIDS and can also lead to chronic inflammation of prostate in men which may eventually lead to prostate cancer. Methods of prevention include sexual abstinence, using condoms, not douching, and getting tested for STDs with each new partner. 9. Genital Herpes Genital herpes is an infection caused by herpes simplex virus and one of the most common STDs in the world. Most infected people don’t experience any symptoms, but when symptoms do appear they typically include small blisters that break open to form painful ulcers on the genital area. Even though genital herpes is most contagious when symptoms are present, it can still be passed to others in the absence of symptoms. The onset is usually around 4 days after exposure and symptoms can last up to 4 weeks. In addition to painful blisters, an infected person may also experience itching and burning sensation, discharge, fever, headache, muscle pain, enlarged lymph nodes, and general feeling of discomfort. Women also experience additional symptoms such as painful urination and inflammation of the cervix. Genital herpes cannot be cured and infection usually recurs four to six times per year. Complications are rare but may include bladder problems, meningitis, and an increased risk of HIV/AIDS. As with most STDs, prevention includes abstinence, using condoms, and only having sex with partners who have tested negative for HSV. 8. Crabs Pubic lice, better known as crabs, are parasitic insects that primarily infest the pubic or genital area of humans. Nits and live lice are often visible to the naked eye and adult lice can sometimes be seen crawling on the skin. In most cases, crabs are transmitted through sexual activity but nonsexual transmission is also possible. For example, a person can get crabs from sleeping in an infested bed, using infested towels, wearing infested clothing, or rarely by using an infested toilet seat. The main symptom of crabs is intense itching in the pubic-hair area, which gradually becomes stronger over several weeks following infestation. This itching is caused by an allergic reaction to the saliva produced by the parasite, and usually starts about five days after a person gets crabs. Crabs are treated with both over-the-counter and prescription medications and several rounds of treatment are usually needed to kill all of the newly hatched nymphs. Sexual contact should be avoided until all signs of infestation disappear. People with more sex partners are at a greater risk of getting crabs and since condoms do not provide effective protection, the only way to reduce your risk is through abstinence or mutual monogamy with an uninfected partner. 7. Chancroid Unlike crabs, the next STD on our list is spread exclusively through sexual contact. Chancroid, also known as soft chancre, is a bacterial infection mainly found in developing countries and among low socioeconomic populations. The symptoms of chancroid include ulcers and open sores in the genital area, pain with urination and intercourse..

Infertility- Causes

11:55
Most couples achieve pregnancy within the first six months of trying. Overall, after 12 months of frequent unprotected intercourse, about 90 percent of couples will become pregnant. The majority of couples will eventually conceive, with or without treatment. The main sign of infertility is the inability for a couple to get pregnant. There may be no other obvious symptoms. Infertility may be due to a single cause in either you or your partner, or a combination of factors that may prevent a pregnancy from occurring or continuing. Fortunately, there are many safe and effective therapies for overcoming infertility. When to see a doctor In general, you may consider seeing a doctor about infertility if you and your partner have been trying regularly to conceive for at least one year. Infertility problems can be present from birth (congenital) or something can go wrong along the way that results in infertility. The reasons for infertility can involve one or both partners. In general: In about one-third of cases, the cause of infertility involves only the male. In about one-third of cases, the cause of infertility involves only the female. In the remaining cases, the cause of infertility involves both the male and female, or no cause can be identified. In order to undertsnd the caues of infertility, we need to understand how the normal pregnancy happens. unprotected vaginal intercourse, during which a man successfuly ejaculates sperm into the vagina or sometimes at the vulva. The sperm can then travel up through the cervix, into the uterus, and, if an egg is present, the sperm may fertilize it. So, the Causes of male infertility may include: Abnormal sperm production or function due to various problems, such as undescended testicles, genetic defects, diabetes, prior infections such as mumps, trauma or prior surgeries on the testicles or inguinal region. Enlarged veins in the testes can increase blood flow and heat, affecting the number and shape of sperm. Problems with the delivery of sperm due to sexual problems, such as premature ejaculation, semen entering the bladder instead of emerging through the penis during orgasm (retrograde ejaculation), certain genetic diseases, such as cystic fibrosis, structural problems, such as blockage of the part of the testicle that contains sperm (epididymis), or damage or injury to the reproductive organs. Men who have previously undergone a vasectomy and desire a return of fertility will also need to either have the vasectomy reversed (see 'vasectomy reversal' below) or have sperm retrieved through a surgical procedure for use in assisted reproductive techniques. Overexposure to certain chemicals and toxins, such as pesticides, radiation, tobacco smoke, alcohol, marijuana, and steroids (including testosterone). In addition, frequent exposure to heat, such as in saunas or hot tubs, can elevate the testicular temperature, impairing sperm production. Damage related to cancer and its treatment, Treatment for cancer and removal of one testicle due to cancer also may affect male fertility. Causes of female infertility may include: Ovulation disorders, due to hormonal disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition that might relate to your ovaries producing too much of the male hormone testosterone, and hyperprolactinemia, when you have too much prolactin — the hormone that stimulates breast milk production. Primary ovarian insufficiency, also called early menopause, when the ovaries stop working and menstruation ends before age 40. Uterine or cervical abnormalities, including problems with the opening of the cervix or cervical mucus, or abnormalities in the shape or cavity of the uterus. Benign tumors in the wall of the uterus that are common in women (uterine fibroids) may rarely cause infertility by blocking the fallopian tubes. More often, fibroids may distort the uterine cavity interfering with implantation of the fertilized egg. Fallopian tube damage or blockage, which usually results from inflammation of the fallopian tube (salpingitis). This can result from pelvic inflammatory disease, usually caused by sexually transmitted infection, endometriosis or adhesions. Endometriosis, which occurs when endometrial tissue implants and grows outside of the uterus — often affecting the function of the ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes. Pelvic adhesions, bands of scar tissue that bind organs after pelvic infection, appendicitis, or abdominal or pelvic surgery. Other causes in women include: Thyroid problems. Disorders of the thyroid gland can interrupt the menstrual cycle or cause infertility. If you want to read the full transcription please visit us at iunderstand.tv/infertility-cause/

CME: Advances in the Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast and Gynecologic Cancers (Module 6) Breast cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed solid tumor and second leading cause of cancer death in U.S women. If these rates continue, a female child born today will have about a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer at some point during her life. Greater public awareness of signs and symptoms have increased early diagnosis, breast cancer treatment is still dependent on clinical factors such as stage, histology, HER-2 and hormonal status. It is estimated that 20 million Americans may have the human papillomavirus (HPV). Yet more than 76 percent of U.S. women have never heard of this sexually transmitted virus which causes nearly all cervical cancers. Women who are not diagnosed with cervical cancer through screening typically present with advanced disease. In 2010, the NCI placed the number of newly diagnosed cases of cervical cancer at 12,000 with related deaths at 4,000. The scientists and clinicians at City of Hope have a long history of developing and advancing new techniques to screen for, diagnose and treat gynecologic and breast cancers. With the goal of contributing to the improvement of quality of life and overall outcomes for these patient populations, these activity has been designed by these experts, representing multiple disciplines, to profile and discuss the current advances and future directions in the treatment of gynecologic and breast cancers, and to engage with the learner in discussion as to their incorporation into current treatment paradigms. Throat Cancer and HPV

01:52
New studies show throat and neck cancers are on the rise. But unlike most cancers, doctors say the most common cause isn’t genetics or lifestyle, but a virus that’s typically known for causing cervical cancer in women. Dr. Anthony Anfuso, an oncologist on staff with Lee Health, says it’s becoming a common diagnosis. “We’re seeing a lot of younger people who are non-smokers actually get this type of cancer and the reason in those people often times is a virus called HPV.” The human papillomavirus is the same virus that causes cervical cancer in women. Now, doctors say the sexually transmitted virus is also responsible for throat and neck cancer in men and women. “One difference between HPV induced oral cancer and cervical cancer is that there are screening tests, there are pap smears for women, to try to pick up premalignant lesions. Unfortunately, for oral cancer that has not been developed yet,” said Dr. Anfuso. But there is good news. Patients who are diagnosed with HPV oral cancer have a higher chance of survival. “Someone who has an HPV negative oral cancer, which again is a cancer of the tonsil or the back of the tongue, their 5 year survival rate is 35 to 45 percent. If you have a HPV positive tumor it actually jumps to 90 percent for a patient who is a nonsmoker,” said Dr. Anfuso. Doctors say that’s because HPV has not been found to be an aggressive cancer. Radiation and chemotherapy are common treatments for oral cancer. “The fact of the matter is, probably over 90 percent of the population has been exposed to the HPV virus, even the high risk HPV virus. Most people will clear the infection and never develop symptoms,” said Dr. Anfuso. But those who don’t are at risk for developing oral cancer, making it important to notify your doctor about any changes or pain. HPV (Human Papillomavirus)

03:49
Human papilloma virus is the most commonly sexually transmitted disease in United States. Although the incidence of infection is high, most infections resolve spontaneously. It has been found to be an important risk factor in the development of cervical cancer. Clinical manifestations of HPV infection include genital warts, papillomatosis of the respiratory tract, cervical cancer precursors, as well as cancers including cervical, anal, vaginal, vulvar, penile and some neck cancers. Transmission is by direct contact, usually sexual, with an infected person. Transmission has been noted from woman to newborn infant at the time of birth. Risk factors include number of sexual partners as well as young age, inconsistent condom use, genetic factors and lack of circumcision of the male partner. An estimated 20 million people are currently infected in the United States with 6.2 million new cases occurring every year. Up to 64% of sexually active adolescent girls are positive. The two most common types of cervical cancer, squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, are both caused by HPV. Approximately 11,000 new cases are diagnosed each year with about 3,800 women dying from cervical cancer on an annual basis. The HPV vaccine protects against type 16 and type 18, which are associated with 70% of the cervical cancers. These vaccines are recommended to be started as early as age 9 and are given as either a two or three shot series. Vaccines should not be given if allergic to any component or if the patient has a moderate to severe illness and should not be given during pregnancy. Adverse effects include local reactions and low-grade fever. Syncope is not an unusual side effect in adolescence, but is about the same regardless of what type of vaccine given.

How to Recognize HPV in Women|Human Papillomavirus

03:40
How to Recognize HPV in Women|Human Papillomavirus Disclaimer: This Video Only For Educational Purpose Please Consult To Your Doctor Human papillomavirus (HPV) represents more than 100 distinct viruses, many of which are sexually transmitted infections (STI) that pass through direct contact with mucous membranes in the genital area. It is the most common of sexually transmitted infections, with around 80% of women estimated to be infected at some point in their lifetime.[1] Some types of HPV may cause genital warts in both men and women. Other types may cause cervical cancer and other lesser known cancers in women, such as cancer of the vagina, anus, and vulva. HPV can also cause throat cancer in men and women. Recognizing HPV can be key in proper treatment or management. Some forms of HPV can be recognized on their own, while many require testing from a medical professional. 1 Look for warts as a symptom of low-risk HPV. The most evident symptom of a low-risk HPV infection is genital warts. These warts may appear as small raised bumps, flat lesions, or small protrusions from the skin. These warts tend to be grouped, and can show within days or weeks of infection.[2] In women, genital warts are most often seen on the vulva and labia, but may also occur around the anus, in the vagina, or on the cervix. Low-risk HPV strains may also lead to some lesions around the cervix, but generally speaking will not lead to cancerous cell development. 2 Learn about high-risk HPV detection. High-risk HPV rarely has any associated symptoms unless it has progressed to an advanced stage of cancer. This is why it is important to get an annual pelvic exam from your OB-GYN, who may be able to detect problems before they advance to a cancerous or pre-cancerous level. Symptoms of advanced-stage HPV that may be causing cervical cancer include:[3] Irregular bleeding or spotting between periods or after sexual intercourse. Irregular menstrual cycles. Fatigue. Weight loss or loss of appetite. Back, leg, or pelvic pain. A single swollen leg. Vaginal discomfort. Odorous discharge from the vagina. 3 Screen for other cancers. High-risk HPV most commonly causes cervical cancer, but it has also been linked to cancer of the vulva, anus, and throat.[4] These cancers can be detected early if you get regular medical examinations, which is why it is important to get regular screenings. On exposed areas, such as the vulva or around the anus, swipe a flat palm over the area to check for lumps that may indicate genital warts. NCCC: Raising Awareness About Cervical Cancer

08:20
Approximately 6 million new cases of sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV) occur in the U.S. each year, with at least 20 million people estimated to be currently infected. Most people with HPV, though, do not know that they are infected. It is estimated that 70% of women and men will come into contact with it during their life. Though usually harmless, some high-risk types cause cervical cell changes that, if not detected in time, can turn into cervical cancer. The National Cervical Cancer Coalition (NCCC), a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to serving women with, or at risk for, cervical cancer and HPV disease, prevention through education about early vaccination, Pap testing regularly and HPV testing when recommended. Regular Pap tests, supplemented by appropriate HPV testing, will detect virtually all pre-cancerous changes and cervical cancers. Cervical cancer is completely preventable if precancerous cell changes are detected and treated early.

More US girls now getting cervical cancer vaccine

01:48
NEW YORK (AP) -- More teen girls are getting a controversial cervical cancer vaccine but the increase isn't much of a bump, the government reported Thursday. Last year's rise follows a couple of years when the girls' HPV vaccination rate was flat and health officials worried that it wouldn't budge. For girls ages 13 to 17, the rate is now up to about 38 percent of girls, from 33 percent. "It was better than nothing. But we really need to do better moving forward," said Dr. Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The vaccine protects against human papillomavirus, or HPV. The sexually transmitted bug can cause cervical cancer, genital warts and other illnesses. A three-dose series of HPV shots was introduced in 2006. The government recommends the vaccine for girls ages 11 and 12 because it works best if given before a teen starts to have sex. Some have worried that taking a child for the vaccination implied green-lighting sexual activity. But health officials have tried to push doctors and parents to see it as just another disease-prevention measure for pre-adolescents, like the recommended shots against meningitis and whooping cough. It takes time for new vaccines to become widely used, but the HPV vaccine has lagged behind other shots. There's some good news: Campaigns in Illinois, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico and South Carolina paid off with increases last year of at least 12 percentage points for girls who got at least one dose, the CDC reported. Nationally, vaccination rate increases were larger for boys. About 35 percent got at least one dose last year, up from 21 percent in 2012. The three-dose number doubled to 14 percent, from 7 percent. The government only began recommending the vaccine for boys in 2011, and the increases mirror those seen in girls five years earlier. It's not clear if the trend will flatten out after the early rush - like it did for girls. The CDC numbers come from a random phone survey of parents of about 18,000 adolescents, followed by a check of medical records. But many declined to be in the survey and it's possible that those who agreed to participate were more likely to embrace HPV vaccinations. That could make the actual HPV rates lower than the CDC report suggests, Schuchat said. --- Online: CDC report: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr (c) 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. In 2002 it was 65%, 56% in 2006, 54.5% in 2009. * Contrary to frequent claims, infants do feel pain as intensely as adults, and very possibly even more. * Painful newborn procedures—including circumcision—should be avoided in order to prevent long-term psychological and physiological consequences. * Circumcision regularly removes a shocking 3/4 of the penis’ sensitivity through the removal of the ridged band, foreskin “lips,” and most often the entire frenulum. * As adults, men circumcised in infancy are almost 5 times more likely to be diagnosed with erectile dysfunction (ED). * Circumcised men and boys are 60% more likely to suffer from alexithymia, a psychological trait disorder which causes difficulty in identifying and expressing one’s emotions, which can lead to difficulties in sustaining relationships. * Circumcision has never been proven to be effective in either reducing or treating cervical cancer, penile cancer, urinary tract infections, or sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS. * Not one medical association in America, or anywhere else in the world, recommends infant circumcision; some even recommend against it. At no time in its 75 years has the American Academy of Pediatrics ever recommended infant circumcision. Source: http://circumcisiondecisionmaker.com/circumcision-facts/

HPV NYC - (212) 644-6454 - NYC HPV - New York, NY

03:24
http://www.hpvnyc.org/ (212)-644-6454 Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). The virus infects the skin and mucous membranes. There are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of men and women, including the skin of the penis, vulva (area outside the vagina), and anus, and the linings of the vagina, cervix, and rectum. You cannot see HPV. Most people who become infected with HPV do not even know they have it. Most people with HPV do not develop symptoms or health problems. But sometimes, certain types of HPV can cause genital warts in men and women. Other HPV types can cause cervical cancer and other less common cancers, such as cancers of the vulva, vagina, anus, and penis. The types of HPV that can cause genital warts are not the same as the types that can cause cancer. HPV types are often referred to as "low-risk" (wart-causing) or "high-risk" (cancer-causing), based on whether they put a person at risk for cancer. In 90% of cases, the body's immune system clears the HPV infection naturally within two years. This is true of both high-risk and low-risk types. Genital warts usually appear as small bumps or groups of bumps, usually in the genital area. They can be raised or flat, single or multiple, small or large, and sometimes cauliflower shaped. They can appear on the vulva, in or around the vagina or anus, on the cervix, and on the penis, scrotum, groin, or thigh. Warts may appear within weeks or months after sexual contact with an infected person. Or, they may not appear at all. If left untreated, genital warts may go away, remain unchanged, or increase in size or number. They will not turn into cancer. Cervical cancer does not have symptoms until it is quite advanced. For this reason, it is important for women to get screened regularly for cervical cancer. Other less common HPV-related cancers, such as cancers of the vulva, vagina, anus and penis, also may not have signs or symptoms until they are advanced. Genital HPV is passed on through genital contact, most often during vaginal and anal sex. A person can have HPV even if years have passed since he or she had sex. Most infected persons do not realize they are infected or that they are passing the virus to a sex partner. Very rarely, a pregnant woman with genital HPV can pass HPV to her baby during vaginal delivery. In these cases, the child may develop warts in the throat or voice box -- a condition called recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). HPV can cause normal cells on infected skin or mucous membranes to turn abnormal. Most of the time, you cannot see or feel these cell changes. In most cases, the body fights off HPV naturally and the infected cells then go back to normal. Sometimes, low-risk types of HPV can cause visible changes that take the form of genital warts. If a high-risk HPV infection is not cleared by the immune system, it can linger for many years and turn abnormal cells into cancer over time. About 10% of women with high-risk HPV on their cervix will develop long-lasting HPV infections that put them at risk for cervical cancer. Similarly, when high-risk HPV lingers and infects the cells of the penis, anus, vulva, or vagina, it can cause cancer in those areas. But these cancers are much less common than cervical cancer. HPV infection. Approximately 20 million Americans are currently infected with HPV, and another 6.2 million people become newly infected each year. At least 50% of sexually active men and women acquire genital HPV infection at some point in their lives. Genital warts. About 1% of sexually active adults in the U.S. have genital warts at any one time. Cervical cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2008, 11,070 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer in the U.S. Other HPV-related cancers are much less common than cervical cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2008, there will be: 3,460 women diagnosed with vulvar cancer; 2,210 women diagnosed with vaginal and other female genital cancers; 1,250 men diagnosed with penile and other male genital cancers; and 3,050 women and 2,020 men diagnosed with anal cancer. Certain populations may be at higher risk for HPV-related cancers, such as gay and bisexual men, and individuals with weak immune systems (including those who have HIV/AIDS). RRP is very rare. It is estimated that less than 2,000 children get RRP every year. A vaccine can now protect females from the four types of HPV that cause most cervical cancers and genital warts. The vaccine is recommended for 11 and 12 year-old girls. It is also recommended for girls and women age 13 through 26 who have not yet been vaccinated or completed the vaccine series.
