What are the hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries, and how can these turn into safety risks? As Boeing grapples with lithium-ion battery safety issues in their 787 Dreamliner, Risk Bites looks at the risk science behind these batteries that are increasingly ubiquitous in cell phones, laptops, cars, and now high-tech airplanes. Get Lithium Metal From an Energizer Battery

We show you how to get Lithium Metal from an Energizer Ultimate Lithium battery. Warning: This should be done outside or in a fumehood due to the toxic gases that may be formed under certain conditions. Gloves must be worn as the chemicals and lithium are corrosive. There are a great many types of lithium batteries and the particular chemistry of interest is "lithium iron disulfide" batteries which contain pure lithium metal and less toxic electrolyte than other batteries. Lithium ion batteries do not contain lithium metal (just lithium ions) and other pure metal lithium batteries often contain incredibly toxic electrolyte that make them too dangerous for the average person to safely open. It just so happens that the popular Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries are based on lithium iron disulfide chemistry making them the ideal choice for the home chemist to obtain lithium. The rolled lithium core is protected by a mini-fortress of steel that you have to cut through. The danger is accidentally shorting the battery and causing the internal materials to fuse. The video shows you what you have to go through and what to expect when opening an energizer ultimate lithium battery. Lithium is a powerful chemical reducing agent, it's also used for lithiation reactions in organic synthesis, batteries, unusual pyrotechnic formulations and some types of nuclear technologies. It's in the same category as the alkali metals which include the ever so popular sodium, potassium and cesium.

Lithium Ion Batteries in Electric Vehicles

By Austin Anderson, Lewei He, Kiri Nicholson, and Brooke Noeska Adoption of electric cars has been on the rise for the past decade due to the substantial advances that have been made by improvement of technology. The greatest challenges regarding electric cars are their batteries. Finding a balance between battery life, weight, rechargeability, and cost has proven to be a significant issue. This video focuses on lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles. First, we provide a quick survey of electric vehicle designs. We then discuss chemistry, physics, and material science behind basic design of lithium-ion batteries. Next, we look at challenges that electric vehicles and the batteries face, which is the balance between adequate energy storage and weight of the battery. How do we solve these challenges? The answer to this question lies within the material science paradigm triangle, which looks at property, processing, and structure. One key aspect in performance of the battery is the use of silicon versus graphite anodes, in which lithium ions are absorbed. Considering properties, graphite is more stable while silicon can absorb more ions, although they sometimes absorb too much and fail due to the mechanical stress. Considering processing, silicon films as thin as 20nm can absorb nearly the maximum amount of ions while limiting the amount of load the ions create. Finally, in a structural view, research has shown that small amount of tin in silicon anodes can greatly enhance capacity. Similarly, silicon-graphene anodes are another option with improvements in capacity and stability. In this perspective, the way to improve performance is clear: thinner silicon sheets with small amount of tin. Lithium ion batteries hold a lot of advantages over other types of power sources. Compared to gasoline, vehicles produce less emission by using power that may be generated by renewable and nuclear energy. Compared to other batteries, lithium-ion provides high energy density by weight, relatively low amount of toxic and hazardous elements, and a good cycle durability. The future of electric vehicles is immense, and with advancements in material science, lithium-ion batteries will likely continue to provide the energy that not only drives cars, but also drives the growth of the market of electric vehicles. Although rechargeable batteries in smartphones, cars and tablets can be charged again and again, they don't last forever. Old batteries often wind up in landfills or incinerators, potentially harming the environment. And valuable materials remain locked inside. Now, a team of researchers is turning to naturally occurring fungi to drive an environmentally friendly recycling process to extract cobalt and lithium from tons of waste batteries. Because of the huge growth in smartphones and all the other products with rechargeable batteries, the demand for lithium is rising rapidly, and it is not sustainable to keep mining new lithium resources Although a global problem, the U.S. leads the way as the largest generator of electronic waste. It is unclear how many electronic products are recycled. Most likely, many head to a landfill to slowly break down in the environment or go to an incinerator to be burned, generating potentially toxic air emissions. While other methods exist to separate lithium, cobalt and other metals, they require high temperatures and harsh chemicals. The research team is developing an environmentally safe way to do this with organisms found in nature -- fungi in this case -- and putting them in an environment where they can do their work. Smartphone Batteries Emit Over 100 Toxic Gases| latest news 24x7

More than 100 potentially fatal gases are produced by the batteries found in billions of consumer devices such as smartphones and tablets, a new study has warned. The research identified over 100 toxic gases released by lithium batteries, including carbon monoxide, which can cause strong irritations to the skin, eyes and nasal passages and harm the wider environment. Researchers from the Institute of NBC Defence in the US and Tsinghua University in China said many people may be unaware of the dangers of overheating, damaging or using a disreputable charger for their rechargeable devices. In the new study, they investigated a type of rechargeable battery, known as a "lithium-ion" battery, which is placed in two billion consumer devices every year. "Nowadays, lithium-ion batteries are being actively promoted by many governments all over the world as a viable energy solution to power everything from electric vehicles to mobile devices," said Jie Sun, lead author and professor at the Institute of NBC Defence. "The lithium-ion battery is used by millions of families, so it is imperative that the general public understand the risks behind this energy source," said Sun. Sun and her colleagues identified several factors that can cause an increase in the concentration of the toxic gases emitted. A fully charged battery will release more toxic gases than a battery with 50 per cent charge, for example. The chemicals contained in the batteries and their capacity to release charge also affected the concentrations and types of toxic gases released. Identifying the gases produced and the reasons for their emission gives manufacturers a better understanding of how to reduce toxic emissions and protect the wider public, as lithium-ion batteries are used in a wide range of environments. "Such dangerous substances, in particular carbon monoxide, have the potential to cause serious harm within a short period of time if they leak inside a small, sealed environment, such as the interior of a car or an airplane compartment," Sun said. Almost 20,000 lithium-ion batteries were heated to the point of combustion in the study, causing most devices to explode and all to emit a range of toxic gases. Batteries can be exposed to such temperature extremes in the real world, for example, if the battery overheats or is damaged in some way.

NEVER EVEN THINK OF TAKING THE PILLS THAT ARE HOMEMADE. THE LITHIUM IN THE BATTERY HAS VERY VERY TOXIC IMPURITIES AND THAT MAKES THE PILLS WE MAKE VERY VERY TOXIC. NEVER TAKE THE PILLS MADE THIS WAY. THEY ARE NOT MENT TO BE USED. THEIR PURPOSE IS TO DEMONSTRATE THAT WE CAN MAKE THE ACTIVE SUBSTANCE IN THE ANTIDEPRESSANTS. BECAUSE OF THE IMPURITIES THEY ARE VERY TOXIC. NEVER TAKE THEM. Do not repeat this experiment unless you are a trained professional or unless you are supervised by one. First we begin by opening the battery. We made sure that it is a lithium battery, and not a lithium ion battery, because those do not have lithium metal inside. We cut the battery in the middle using a pipe cutter and a trained electrician pulls open the battery. DO NOT open the battery unless you have experience doing so, because the battery can short out and explode. After pulling the battery apart we are left with the cathode(MnO2) connected to its collector(aluminium foil), the anode(lithium foil) connected to its collector(Cu) and the separator(a sheet from polyethylene and polypropylene). We extract the lithium foil and in small peaces we add it to 20 ml of water. The water reacts with the lithium to prodce lithium hydroxide. 2 LI + 2 H2O = 2 LIOH + H2 The next step is to produce CO2 and we do that by reacting HCL and NaHCO3. We put the HCl in a separatory funeel and slowly let the acid drip in the baking soda. LiOH + CO2 = Li2CO3 + H2O The reaction produces CO2 which is led to the lithium hydorxide by the way of a rubber tube. The CO2 reacts with the LiOH and that produces lithium carbonate which is an active substance in most drugs for manic depression. we filter the solution with the lithium carbonate and we are left with a white powder that we put in a capsule. THIS IS VERY TOXIC. NEVER THINK TO TAKE THESE DRUGS. the lithium we use is very very dirty with very very TOXIC contaminates. the lithium carbonate we make from that lithium is very very TOXIC because of that. the lithium form the battery is filled with toxic impurities. these pills are just for show. they should never be taken. I REPEAT THE PILLS MADE THIS WAY ARE EXTREMELY TOXIC AND SHOULD NEVER BE TAKEN.

I have not had these batteries very long but so far they are great. I use them in to listen to the news with my Roku on the remote headset and so far so good. I was using NiMH batteries but after a short time, they would start failing. These batteries are the same price as the nimNiMH h, and they charge so fast, plus the 1000 charge cycles with still a lot of capacity left I will not need to replace these for a while and just by more for the rest of my devices. Our first high discharge test on the Relion RB100 was pretty impressive. We were able to pull over 1500 Watts out of this very small, very light battery. To put that into perspective, it's almost impossible to do with lead acid batteries for any length of time because at high discharge rates the capacity of lead acid batteries declines very quickly, and even if you could do it, it would take at least 6 golf cart batteries to discharge 1500 Watts. A battery bank like that is very big, very heavy, very complicated, very toxic, doesn't last very long, is difficult to mount, and is so difficult to deal with that we just won't do it any more. Lead Acid is not only low performing but much more expensive due to the short life, 50% discharge limit, etc. The problem with lead acid is that if you want to push more than a few hundred watts, you are basically out of luck with lead acid unless you're willing to work around A LOT of problems. Energy security and resiliency shouldn't mean putting homes and families at risk. You want your battery to be safe, especially if it is to be installed in a home. Cobalt-based lithium batteries (e.g., LCO, NMC, NCA) are very prone to thermal runaway, as we are all familiar with from cell phone and laptops - which all use cobalt-based lithium batteries - overheating and catching fire. They overheat and catch fire because of the cobalt. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are not prone to thermal runaway whatsoever, so they are safer inside your home. In terms of toxicity, flooded lead acid batteries and cobalt-based lithium batteries have toxic byproducts and they cannot be recycled. Lithium iron phosophate (LFP) batteries can be recycled.

Laptop Battery in Thermal Runaway

In this demonstration the Li-ion battery of a laptop computer is forced into thermal runaway using an internal cartridge heater. The temperature of the battery pack is shown on a graph in real time. The heater heats the pack to 250 degrees C but in thermal runaway the internal pack temperature immediately reaches 475 degrees C. Water is then used in an attempt to put out the laptop fire. As the battery pack goes into thermal runaway the pack temperature quickly rises, the heater is turned off and the first two cells rupture expelling toxic solvent and electrolyte. As water is poured onto the keyboard (per the accepted FAA procedure) the pack temperature decreases but then rises again as the third cell ruptures.
