Topotecan helps cure and preserve vision in patients with advanced eye cancer retinoblastoma
An October 2016 St. Jude Children's Research Hospital study shows that the drug topotecan should be part of up-front chemotherapy for patients with advanced retinoblastoma that had not spread beyond their eyes. Retinoblastoma is a tumor that begins in the retina of the eye and usually occurs in young children. The study found that including topotecan in multi-drug chemotherapy helped to maintain high cure rates and preserve vision. "That's only possible because we took a question from the clinic, took it to the lab, got information about what was possible and brought it back to the patients," says Rachel Brennan, M.D., of St. Jude Oncology.
