Cubans breed thoroughbred horses for export
Already renowned for fine rum and fancy cigars, Cuba is carving out a new luxury niche that is attracting Latin American elites to the communist-run island: elite, European-born jumping horses. Cuba has been training Dutch Warmblood horses brought over from the Netherlands since 2010, turning them into prized competitors that can sell for more than 40-thousand US dollars at auction. Jockey Jose Luis Vaquero trains the horses at the government-run Flora and Fauna's National Equestrian Club on a daily basis. The horses are pampered and groomed ahead of the auctions by their trainers. Vaquero said such loving care pays off at auction time. The Dutch Warmbloods are brought over from Europe at the age of one-and-a-half years then trained in competitive jumping before being auctioned aged three. Cuban farms are now looking to breed the Dutch Warmbloods locally, for buyers who find it more convenient and less costly to purchase horses on the island than in Europe. Revenue from the annual sales is divided between Dutch equine company VDL Stud and Flora and Fauna, a Cuban state business that promotes the island's natural resources, including horses. While Cuba may seem an unlikely place to find purebreds trained for collectors, Cuba's tradition of horse breeding and training dates to 16th-century Spanish colonisers. After the communist revolution that ended in 1959, the government banned horse racing, along with gambling and professional sports. With the recent warming of relations between Cuba and the United States, the trainers are hopeful US buyers will travel to Cuba to buy island-bred horses. Available for adoption: Nakita - Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre
AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION: NAKITA Nakita is a 6-year-old bay mare who was surrendered to us in June 2015 with a mystery illness that was causing her to waste away. We rushed her to the Alicante horse hospital, where they found an infection causing fluid on her heart and lungs, and immediately administered antibiotics. Since then, she's returned to health but we still don't know exactly what caused this illness or if it will ever come back. Nakita is sound but would need a very confident person as she has never been ridden and is quite a handful – as you can see! (We took this video a few months back after a bout of rain, hence all the mud.) She also has a bad allergy to the bites of midges – called sweet itch – and therefore requires extra care in spring. If you're interested in giving Nakita her forever home, please apply here: http://easyhorsecare.net/our-horses/adopt Check out our website for more information: http://www.easyhorsecare.net Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EasyHorseCare Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/EasyHorseCare

Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog breed of terrier type, developed in the 19th century in the county of Yorkshire, England, to catch rats in clothing mills, also used for rat-baiting. The defining features of the breed are its maximum size of 7 pounds and its gray, black, and tan coat. The breed is nicknamed Yorkie and is placed in the Toy Terrier section of the Terrier Group by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale and in the Toy Group or Companion Group by other kennel clubs, although all agree that the breed is a terrier. A popular companion dog, the Yorkshire Terrier has also been part of the development of other breeds, such as the Australian Silky Terrier. This video targeted to blind users.
