How to Pass The Firefighter Test
How to Pass The Firefighter Test http://www.firefighter-cheat-sheet.com/ https://www.facebook.com/iwillhelpyoubecomeafirefighter There are quite a number of written tests that are involved in the process of selecting firefighters. Normally the design of these tests is that of multiple choice questions and their main aim is to test whether the candidate has the required aptitude and ability to succeed as a firefighter. Usually, the tests are administered in a Fire Service establishment or a local test center. They require approximately 3 hours to finish. The good thing about it is that all the firefighter test requirements are sent to you before the day of sitting the test. The firefighter test is normally divided into the following two categories: - Ability Tests This will test your ability to work with numbers, to understand information relayed to you and your level of situational awareness and problem solving skills. The written firefighter tests are split into two different categories as follows: - The National Firefighter Questionnaire The main purpose of this questionnaire is to prompt the candidate to give information on his or her behavior and style. The information that is provided in this questionnaire combined with the results that you get from the other test are used to make a decision as to whether or not you can be a good firefighter. To be able to pass this test, it is imperative that you adequately prepare yourself. You have to get into that room knowing exactly what you are going to do there and what is required to you. Before you go into that room, ask yourself the following questions: - Why did the Fire Fighting Department choose to assess my ability in these specific areas? - What is it exactly that they expect to get from the successful candidates? Take time to brainstorm the answers to this question. Ensure that the answers that you go with are specific to you and not generic ones. Once you get the answers, go ahead to draw a plan on how you are actually going to achieve the answers. Remember that for you to succeed in getting into the firefighting department you have to give them what they want. Thus it is imperative that you work on finding out how best you can deliver what they are looking for the moment you find out what they are looking for. For an inside look into what will be on the written firefighter examination, visit: http://www.firefighter-cheat-sheet.com/ where professional firefighters have revealed the psychology behind your entrance exam and how to pass! When you go to undertake the tests, ensure that you treat them with utmost seriousness. Remember that this job involves saving the lives of people; it is always practically a life or death situation with this job. You have to be fully aware of what you are getting yourself into and give it the seriousness that it deserves. This will help you to succeed for years in the field.

Home Fire Escape Plans
In the event of a fire, remember - time is the biggest enemy and every second counts! Escape plans help you get out of your home quickly. In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for a house to fill with thick black smoke and become engulfed in flames. Have a home fire escape plan and practice it regularly to give you and your family the best chance to escape a fire.

Teaching Children the Importance of Fire Safety
Create a Fire Escape Plan with your family. Sit down with everyone in your home and discuss how each person will get out in a fire and practice it your Escape Plan. Have a meeting place outside, a safe distance from your home. In case of fire, everyone should go directly to this meeting place to be accounted for. When the smoke alarms sound, get out immediately and call 9-1-1 from outside using a cell phone or from a neighbour’s home. Never re-enter a burning building. Visit www.sparky.org to play games, watch cartoons and videos teaching children the importance of fire safety or call our Emergency Services Department at 613-354-4289 for more information.

Stop, Drop and Roll: Kindergarten Kids Learn the Basics of Fire Safety
By Video Journalist Waldo Cabrera Kindergarten kids are taught the basics of fire safety as they learn to stop, drop and roll in gym class. They carwl through a display of "pretend fire and smoke" to then practice what they learned. This knowledge is very important to teach from a young age so it can always be remembered. It teaches them not to panic if they were ever in this situation. They learn to trust these big men in big gear who might of sacred them before and how to walk the ladder, the process and how serious a fire really is.This event brings many parents which allows them to see their kids in action, the importance of having meeting places in the case of ever getting split up during a fire and keeping them aware of hazaards that could lead to fires at home. The children didn't just get to practice stopping, dropping and rolling but they also used team work and pretended to be a team of fire fighters to put out pretend fires. The objective was to have these kids walk out and feel safe, feel prepared to not just save their own lives but to help others and let themselves be help. Look, Listen. Learn. with Simon to discover more about fire safety.
This year’s FPW campaign, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere,” works to educate people about three basic but essential steps to take to reduce the likelihood of having a fire––and how to escape safely in the event of one: LOOK for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them. LISTEN for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should know to meet. LEARN two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter. To learn more visit: http://www.firepreventionweek.org

Check Presentation by FM Global
We'd like to send a HUGE thank you to FM Global for donating more than $2000 toward the purchase of fire safety activity books for students during Fire Prevention Month! During a presentation Wednesday, the Springfield Fire Department received a check from FM Global in the amount of $2,060. The grant will help fund 4,000 fire safety activity books which will be distributed to Springfield elementary school students during Fire Prevention Month in October. "It is important to the Springfield Fire Department to provide every student with life-saving fire safety education," said Fire and Life Safety Educator Cara Restelli Erwin. "These activity books ensure that safety education continues at home." Each year, the Springfield Fire Department visits Kindergarten through 5th grade classes at more than two dozen schools. In 2013, firefighters provided fire safety lessons for more than 6,000 students. These fire safety activity books will allow children to better retain the lessons learned by not only providing follow up activities at home, but also involving the entire family in their efforts to make their homes fire safe. These books include a number of educational activities including a home fire escape plan, crosswords, home hazard checklist, sorting "hot" and "not hot", coloring pages with fire safety messages and more. "We are grateful to FM Global for it's contribution," said Fire Chief David Hall. "Our prevention program is far more successful with the help of organizations like FM Global."

7 Ways to Survive Natural Disasters
How to Survive Natural Disasters. Here’s a list of survival tips that can save your life in an emergency. We live in a time when natural disasters occur more and more often and get more and more devastating. Many of us believe we should blame the human race for that. Whether it’s true or not, we all want to know how to survive when those disasters happen. Some rules are universal for most natural disasters. A national campaign called Ready was started in the United States to inform the population about how to get ready for and survive in different emergency situations. It recommends having a basic survival kit to provide you with the most important things just in case. Remember you will need to have enough food, water, and other supplies for at least 72 hours after the disaster. “Other supplies” include a battery powered weather radio, flashlight, first aid kit, a whistle, a dust mask, personal sanitation items (such as moist towelettes), pliers, can opener for food, maps of your area and an emergency cell phone with backup batteries. TIMESTAMPS Hurricane 0:40 Tornado 1:45 Tsunami 3:15 Flood 4:10 Avalanche 5:03 Wildfire 6:00 Earthquake 7:00 SUMMARY - If a hurricane starts while you are driving, leave your vehicle and find a building to shelter in, or a ditch. Stopping in an overpass will not save you. If your home is a trailer and there is enough time to flee to a safe area – do it. - If a tornado starts when you are in a public building, follow the same rules. You want to stay as low as possible. Avoid windows and open spaces such as auditoriums, gyms, and large hallways. Desks and benches can give you some extra protection if you get under them. It is impossible to outrun a tornado. - Tsunamis are so fast they hit the coast minutes after the earthquake. Remember that tall buildings, including hotels right in the beach area, can provide an excellent shelter. In case a tsunami finds you at sea, stay there instead of going back to the coast. It won’t be a safe haven. - Don’t try to be the bravest person around and stay in your house once you hear the evacuation warning. Leave for safety in higher grounds with your important papers in a waterproof container. If a flash flood gives you no time to evacuate and the water is all around you, don’t try to swim across it. - When an avalanche starts, try to move to the side of the slope as fast as you can. There will be more snow in the center of the flow. To move faster, drop any heavy equipment you have on you. If you can’t escape it, try using a sturdy tree to keep you above the snow. - If you find yourself in a wildfire area, it is critically important to ensure that you can breathe. If you fail to do it, you can pass out in the midst of a danger zone. Use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth and escape to safety. - If an earthquake starts when you are inside, stay where you were. Experts say that during an earthquake you must drop to the floor, get underneath a table, cover your neck and head with one hand, and hold on with the other hand. Your entire body must be under the table. Don’t try to run out of the building - the exterior of a building is one of the most dangerous places.
