University of Oregon's SAPP Professional Development Program ~Positive Social Norms~

05:13
The Social Norms Approach The social norms approach to preventing problem behavior and promoting and reinforcing positive behavior, put simply, is to dispel the myths about the problem being the norm among peers. It starts with gathering credible data from a population and identifying the actual norms regarding the attitudes and behavior of concern. Then a social norms intervention intensively communicates the truth through media campaigns, interactive programs, personalized normative feedback, and other educational venues. Evidence has shown youth and adults responding to these initiatives with more realistic perceptions of positive peer norms lead to decreases in problem behavior and increases in positive behavior in the population. While the social norms approach is best known for its effectiveness in reducing heavy episodic alcohol consumption and alcohol-related harm among college students, it has also been used effectively in interventions targeting tobacco use, DUI prevention, seat-belt use, and tax compliance. Interestingly, effective interventions have not been limited to colleges and universities, but have also been reported in high school and community-wide settings as well. New areas of interest in the application of the social norms approach are also emerging, such as sexual assault prevention, the improvement of academic performance, and delaying sexual debut among students. Nigel Wrangham is a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor and Certified Prevention Specialist, has been active in the field of substance abuse prevention and community organizing since 1990. He served as Project Director for the Oregon Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking, and as the National Coordinator of Youth In Action for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Nigel develops and delivers unique, customized training and technical assistance to community-based organizations throughout the United States, and teaches Addictions Pharmacology at the University of Oregon and Community Organizing at Portland Community College. He believes in a collaborative and interactive approach to engaging people of all ages and from all cultures in projects that create a more conscious, more informed, and healthier society for all of us. He can usually be found at his desk, pretending to get work done while listening to The Ramones. Professional development opportunities are offered through the University of Oregon Substance Abuse Prevention Program. Specific topics of instruction and availability are frequently updated to meet the changing needs and interests of those in the helping professions. Seminars, trainings, and conferences offer variable contact hours. Each participant receives a certificate that verifies their participation and the number of hours earned. The Substance Abuse Prevention Program is recognized as an approved academic education provider through NAADAC. (The Association for Addiction Professionals) And, SAPP CEU's are accepted by ACCBO (Addiction Counselor Certification Board of Oregon) toward re-certification requirements. Planning lessons: Secondary Science (English commentary)

04:23
A teacher explains how she planned a demonstration to show her students different states of matter. This video is one of a series produced by TESS-India to support teachers in developing learner-centred classroom practices. Filmed in primary and secondary schools in India, the aim of the videos is to inspire teachers to experiment with using similar approaches in their own classrooms. The videos are intended to complement the text-based TESS-India materials for teachers and school leaders. However, they may also be viewed independently of these materials. TESS-India (Teacher Education through School-based Support in India) is an Open University, UK led teacher education project that has collaboratively developed a large repository of freely available, adaptable Open Educational Resources (OER) that support national education priorities in India. The resources are accessible in a range of media and languages, for use in multiple initial and continuing teacher development contexts. TESS-India is funded by UK aid from the UK government. You can learn more about the project and view our materials at http://www.tess-india.edu.in/ You can also receive regular updates by following us on Facebook, Twitter and Flickr. ISKME's OER Commons Teacher Training Initiative

03:53
ISKME's OER Commons Teacher Training Initiative offers teachers a collaborative professional development model centered on engagement with Open Educational Resources (OER). Since 2009, ISKME has trained over 1,500 teachers from 25 countries in its program focused on collaborative innovation and social learning using open curriculum and open teacher-led approaches. In 2011, ISKME launched a Green OER Commons micro-site with Greek partner Agro-Know, delivering sustainability-related learning resources and interdisciplinary lesson plans, including a focus on STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Math) resources. The OER Commons Teacher Training Initiative is rooted in the idea that equitable access to high-quality education is a global imperative. Open Educational Resources, or OER, offer opportunities for systemic change in teaching and learning through accessible content, and importantly, through embedding participatory processes and effective technologies to engage with learning for all. Partnering with key stakeholders and working with teachers globally, ISKME is addressing the central issues related to teacher roles and skills, and to the challenges related to access and customization of high-quality curriculum worldwide. An international jury selected The Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education (ISKME) as the winner of the prestigious 2011 OPAL Award for Bodies Which Influence Policy. ISKME was recognized at the OPAL Awards delivered at Online Educa Berlin on December 2, 2011, on the basis of its OER Commons Teacher Training Initiative. The Award for Bodies which Influence Policy is given to a global, regional or national organization providing the conditions or resources for open educational practices, or encouraging excellence in open educational practices.
