Can you tell me more about the psychological causes of impotence and what I can do to fix this?” Your mind is your biggest “sexual organ” and this means that your mind DOES affect your sexual desires and performance. Psychological factors are responsible for about 15%-20% of all cases of erectile dysfunction (ED) Sometimes this is due to a secondary reaction to an underlying physical cause. In some cases, the psychological effects of ED may stem from childhood abuse or sexual trauma. 6 psychological causes of Erectile Dysfunction... STRESS Stress comes in many forms. Sometimes it’s job or money related. Sometimes it has to do with the current relationship(s) you’re in -- intimate or friendships. Constant worry, negative thoughts, lack of sleep and even physical stress all cause a change in your “brain chemistry” due to a change in your hormones by increasing your “stress” hormone, Cortisol. Remember, your mind and body are connected and they work WITH each other. So what happens in your mind, can manifest physically and in this case, cause Erectile Dysfunction.. ANXIETY Once a man experiences ED, he may become overly worried that the problem will happen again. This can lead to "performance anxiety," or a fear of sexual failure. Unfortunately, the more you think about it, the more anxious you become and the worst the situation is. Keep in mind that similar to “stress”, when you have anxiety your brain chemistry and hormones change, all of this reduces blood flow to your penis and thus, causing impotence. Drugs used to treat anxiety only make ED problems worse! GUILT Feeling guilty can also cause ED. A man may feel guilty that he is not satisfying his partner. Or he may feel guilty about something hurtful that he’s done. DEPRESSION A common cause of ED is depression because it affects a person both psychologically and physically. Depression can cause ED even when a man is completely comfortable in sexual situations. When you’re depressed, you don’t have the “drive”, both in and out of the bedroom. Similar to anti-anxiety drugs, anti-depressant medications only make ED problems worse. LOW SELF-ESTEEM This can be due to prior episodes of ED, thus a feeling of inadequacy. Or it can be the result of other issues unrelated to sexual performance. You may have low self-esteem because of how you look naked or how much money you make or the kind of job you have or other superficial factors. You may also have low self-esteem if you’re comparing yourself to your woman’s past -- previous boyfriends, sexual experiences, etc. Also, statics show that men who watch a lot of porn, tend to have low self-esteem due to the size of their penis -- “is mine big enough?...”, which causes even more mental stress and anxiety. INDIFFERENCE This may come as a result of age and a subsequent loss of interest in sex, stemming from problems in a couple's relationship. If there’s a lack of effort to be affectionate or sexual by both people in the relationship, psychologically you just stop caring, wanting or even thinking about “sex”. Summary As stated in the beginning of today’s video, your mind is your “biggest sexual organ”. We all have things that turn us on or off. Fetishes and so forth. If you’re not in a positive place psychologically, your body will react accordingly. Mental and emotional stress, worry, anxiety and depression AFFECT your body physically… There is a drop in your “sex drive” hormones. When your mind and body is under “stress” and excess worry, it has no need, want or desire to “procreate” and thus, your body shuts down your libido. Solution So, what’s the solution?... Pistachios May Help Erectile Dysfunction Treatment

Erectile dysfunction is a major cause of decreased quality of life in men—so much so that one early theory suggested that this may explain the link between impotence and heart attacks. Depression is a risk factor for coronary heart disease, and the thought was that men who couldn’t get it up become so depressed that they die of a broken heart. Now we know that erectile dysfunction and heart disease can be two different manifestations of the exact same root problem, diseased arteries—inflamed, oxidized, cholesterol-clogged blood vessels (See Survival of the Firmest: Erectile Dysfunction and Death). So it’s no wonder that a diet chock-full of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cholesterol-lowering plant foods would improve sexual functioning in both men and women, as well as reduce the risk of heart disease (See 50 Shades of Green). A completely plant-based diet can even stop and reverse our number one killer (See One in a Thousand: Ending the Heart Disease Epidemic). Of all the plant foods individually examined so far, nuts appear most tied to longevity. Just two handfuls a week may extend a woman’s life as much as jogging four hours a week (see What Women Should Eat to Live Longer). So, if nuts reduce the risk of heart disease, might they also help with sexual dysfunction? In my video, Pistachio Nuts for Erectile Dysfunction I outline a study where men eating three to four handfuls of pistachios a day for just three weeks experienced both significant improvement in blood flow through the penis and significantly firmer erections. This is not surprising. Antioxidant-rich foods have a Viagra-like effect of boosting nitric oxide production. (See The Power of NO). Also, the citruline in watermelons helped with erection firmness by boosting arginine, (See Watermelon as Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction), which is what our body makes nitric oxide out of.Pistachios have a bunch of both antioxidants and arginine, which may help explain the improvement in blood flow. We also know that cholesterol is an important predictor of sexual dysfunction in both men and women (See Cholesterol and Female Sexual Dysfunction), and after just three weeks, those eating pistachios had significant improvements in cholesterol. And like other studies that piled on hundreds of calories of nuts a day, there was no weight gain. (For more on this remarkable effect, see my videos Nuts and Obesity: The Weight of Evidence, Solving the Mystery of the Missing Calories, and Testing the Pistachio Principle). Conclusion: “Just three weeks of pistachios resulted in a significant improvement in erectile function with additional improvement in cholesterol without any side effects.” Note the two important differences between diet and drugs. Drugs like Viagra just cover up the symptoms of the underlying problem–unhealthy arteries. Eating whole healthy plant foods like nuts actually helps attack the root cause—cholesterol, oxidation, and inflammation—and has only good side effects. The enzyme that Viagra-like drugs inhibit is found primarily in two places in the body: the erectile tissue of the penis and the retina of the eye. That’s why the FDA encourages people to stop taking drugs like Viagra, and “call a doctor right away if you experience sudden loss of vision.” (Assuming you can still find your phone.) Though the harms (such as cyanopsia in which everything in our vision suddenly becomes tinted blue) tend to be self-limited and reversible, why risk side-effects at all when the problem can be reversed and cured in the first place, improving the quality and quantity of our lives? There are a couple of major problems with diagnosing it. The first is the fact that very often, men jump to the conclusion that they’re suffering from ED the first time they experience a performance problem. Sometimes, however, a performance problem is just that. A (temporary) performance problem. We’ve all been there. Every sexually active man has, or will have the occasional problem with performance. It happens. It’s just a fact of life. The second major problem is the fact that “ED” is actually kind of a catch all term describing chronic, ongoing male performance issues. There are actually a staggering number of things that can cause ED. Some of these are physical, but others are mental. In this article, we’re going to talk about the mental things that can cause ED. These are cases when the “big head” messes with the "little head," causing sexual performance problems which can lead to very real relationship problems. Depression Depression doesn’t kill, at least not directly, but chronically depressed people have a vastly higher rate of suicide than the national average. Depression touches all areas of your life. It can leave you closed off from the rest of the world, and make maintaining relationships a very difficult proposition. Worse, when you’re depressed, sex is about the last thing on your mind, and because you’re already suffering from low image and self-esteem, any time you find yourself in a romantic situation, you’re going to be plagued with doubts. Those doubts will often wind up expressing themselves in a total inability to perform, sexually. It’s a vicious cycle. Your depression leads to lack of confidence and doubt, which leads to an inability to perform, which makes you feel even less confident and more full of doubt. Once you’re on that treadmill, it can be very difficult for you to get off (or get HER off!) Stress Another big factor on the mental side is stress. Studies have shown that Americans are some of the most stressed out people on the planet. We work too much, we don’t take enough vacations, and when we do, we usually drag our work and all the drama that goes with it along with us. We’re always connected, always “on” and we’ve built our lives around that paradigm. We feel that if we’re not performing like rock stars 24/7, then we’re doing something wrong. The problem, of course, is that it’s just not possible to do that in the long term and keep your sanity. Sooner or later, you’re going to have to take some down time. If you don’t, then your body will eventually force the issue, you’ll get sick and you’ll have no choice but to take some down time. Long before that happens though, you’ll start seeing erectile performance issues. The good news about this is that of all the mental causes of ED, this one’s the easiest to fix. Just slow down. Take a deep breath. Relax. Make a habit of meditation or yoga. I know, I know, you’re the Master of the Universe, and if you’re not always “on” then the world won’t be able to get along without you…except of course that it will. Do yourself a favor and hang up the Superman cape, at least every once in a while. Head Games Sometimes, you’re your own worst enemy when it comes to sex. You’re not depressed, and you’re not stressed out, but all of a sudden, you find yourself plagued with doubts and before you know it, you can’t perform. This is sometimes jokingly referred to “hot chick” syndrome. You know how it goes: You’re out somewhere and you pick up an amazingly beautiful woman. She’s totally into you, one thing leads to another, and before you know it, your clothes are coming off. As her clothes come off, it suddenly hits you just how amazingly beautiful this woman is. Your brain kicks into overdrive, and you find yourself thinking, “wow…she’s almost too beautiful!” Then you start thinking maybe she really IS too beautiful for you. That you’re "playing out of your league." That’s about the time the self-doubt starts creeping in, and before you know it, your erection melts away like a snow cone on a hot summer day. That kind of thing can happen even to the most confident, self-assured men. It’s embarrassing, sure, but in most cases, it’s a temporary thing, tied to a specific woman or sexual encounter. The problem is, sometimes it can become more than that, if you allow that one-time performance issue to occupy too much of your mind. In these cases, there’s nothing physically wrong with you, it’s just that your psyching yourself out, and your big head is pulling the plug on your little head, preventing you from enjoying sex at all.

This is Dr. Lam, founder of DrLam.com and in this video we will go over why. Now, first we have to take a step back and understand that when the body is under stress, its primary objective for survival is to conserve energy. In that respect, the body will start to shut down or slow down non-essential functions. Of course the heart is not something that can be slowed down so it has to be maintained, the brain is something that can not be slowed down that is something that has to be maintained, but other systems that the body it does not consider really critical for survival, such as reproduction, will be one of the ones that start to slow down. What does that mean? That means the body will activate the hormones rebalancing in such a way that libido hormones such as testosterone or estrogen will take a hit. It may be, on laboratory basis, normal, but subclinically in a symptoms perspective the body will have low sex drive and libido will be almost nonexistent in advanced cases. This is very common, there is nothing wrong. Most people get very concerned, especially young people. But it should not be a big concern in terms of structural problems causing the low libido unless it has been proven so by conventional medicine. It is important to understand and look at the big picture, are there other symptoms that go along with this low libido? Stress is one of them, intolerance to exercise, there are many, many symptoms of adrenal fatigue that in itself it doesn't stand alone; in other words the libido and the low sex drive does not 100% point to adrenal fatigue, but if you have this plus other symptoms that are classic for adrenal fatigue then it helps to point the direction to adrenal fatigue. So low libido is the body's way of helping itself for survival, it is not a physiological disfunction in and of itself. Understanding this is very important, because it will prevent you from treating the symptoms by using, whether it is natural or medications, to prop up the sex drive because the only way you are going to be able to do that is to use stimulants, which is directly opposite of what the body wants you to do. Now, this concept is very important because if you don't understand this concept it is so easy to fall into the trap of thinking that something is wrong with the body and by stimulating the body to get more sex drive you will heal. It is not going to happen if the root cause is not in the libido issue, the root cause is really in the adrenals and the low libido is simply a symptom. I hope you understand this concept, and the good news is that this symptom is easy to reverse, because you give the body some time and focus on healing the adrenals, but at the same time you have to focus on not using the stimulants because the stimulants will not give you the real libido increase but basically give you an artificial sense of improvement. If you heal the adrenals properly with natural compounds and do it right, and slowly the libido will return. In fact, we use libido as a gauge of how well the body is recovering. The prevalence of complete ED increases from 10% to 15% as age increases from 40 to 70 years. Thus, even though it does affect men to some degree at all ages, after the age of 40 is when the real problems become “common”. In fact, this is called “Andropause” in men, similar to “menopause” in women. And the cause is similar for most everyone, a negative change in your hormones, primarily due to aging. This is due to an imbalance hormones. A decrease in your “pro-sexual” hormones, such as total and free testosterone … Versus an increase in your negative “anti-sexual” hormones, such as female hormones (estrogen, progesterone, prolactin, etc.) and stress hormones (cortisol, adrenalin, etc.) What Are The Causes Of ED? Unfortunately, your penis has a mind of its own and thus, there are lots of causes leading to ED. Different medications and drugs can cause impotence or ED, stress and worry, vascular and blood flow, boredom with your partner, fatigue, illness and of course, the negative changes in your hormones due to aging. What Are The Solutions? The solution has to be based on the original problem. For example, people who have heart disease or diabetes, have vascular and blood flow problems, leading to erectile dysfunction. The Meds You Take You’ve almost certainly seen various medications advertised on TV. The funny part about those ads is that they spend almost as much time talking about the side effects of their latest “wonder drugs” as they do about its supposed benefits. Unfortunately, many of the drugs on the market today that are designed to treat various conditions, have side effects that include the degradation of male sexual performance. The most common of these are blood pressure medications, but there are many others. The good news is that in many cases, there are often (but not always) alternatives to the meds with these side effects. If that’s the case, your doctor can prescribe you an alternative to help alleviate the problem. Your Big Brain Working Against Your Little Brain Many of the causes of erectile dysfunction are actually psychological. Understand that this is not the same as saying that it’s all in your head, because it’s not. Psychological issues can easily lead to a variety of very real physical ailments. If that surprises you, it shouldn’t. Stress can lead to heart disease, so why can’t other psychological issues lead to ED? It’s a pretty common, fairly well understood phenomenon. Stress is, in fact, one of the leading causes of ED, which makes it a particularly nasty condition (because it also can lead to heart troubles, so it hits you twice). Long before stress kills you though, it will impact your sex life in a major, and entirely negative way. Our modern society is filled to the point of overflowing with stress triggers. We work too many hours. We don’t take enough vacations, and even when we do, we tend to bring our work with us, thanks to the advent of the smart phone, which is both a blessing and a curse. Yes, it lets us keep in touch with friends and families no matter where we are in the world, but it also means that we have the tendency to never unplug. We need that. We need time to decompress and relax. Sure, you can run at top speed for a while, but if you do it too long, you’ll burn yourself out. If you keep going much beyond that, your problems will only worsen with time. Why would you want to do that to yourself? It simply makes no sense. Depression Depression is another common cause of ED, and let’s face it. When you’re depressed, sex is about the last thing you’re thinking of. Stress is a particularly nasty cause of ED, because most of the antidepressant medicines available only make ED worse. Depression is insidious on another front as well, because it’s easy to get caught in a negative, self-reinforcing feedback loop trap. What we mean by that is that when you’re depressed, your self-esteem is (by definition) low. If you try to have sex, your low self-esteem may lead to performance issues. Then, when you fail to perform, sexually, it lowers your self-esteem further, which makes future sexual performance issues even more likely. At that time the end of the external situation is not sufficient to cure the depression. Treatment of endogenous depressions requires medical intervention with medicine, sometimes shock therapy, and sometimes therapy. Depression itself (clinical level) causes people to lose their libido. They don’t feel sexual and don’t want to have sex if their libido is very low. Sometimes they are able to feel some desire. When depressed individuals are put on antidepressant meds, their depression is somewhat moderated but as a side effect they often do not have the ability to have sex, or they are not able to successfully achieve an orgasm. Low testosterone and depression. That's I’m going to talk about in this video. Testosterone deficiency is a common cause of depression in men and can go unrecognized. As a psychiatrist, what I see is the either the depressed man who doesn’t get enough improvement with antidepressants or the man who is not particularly sad, but instead angry, irritable or anxious, or negative. Here are some of the other signs and symptoms of testosterone deficiency. Signs and symptoms of testosterone deficiency Behavioral Decreased assertiveness/increased submissiveness Decreased stress tolerance Irritability Depression or lowered mood Anxiety Dermatologic Loss of body and pubic hair (scalp hair is preserved) Diminished beard growth Thinning and drying of skin (decreased sebum production) Metabolic Mild anemia Diminished bone mineralization Obesity or increased body fat (men) Headaches Reduced muscle volume and strength Reduced general vigor and hardiness Asthenia Frailty (elderly) Sexual Decreased semen volume Erectile dysfunction Decreased sexuality (decreased libido, arousal, responsiveness) There are some things that have been linked to having low testosterone. Sooner or later, every man faces the occasional performance problem. When it happens, you’re going to feel bad about it. You’re going to feel like a failure, and let’s face it, like less of a man, but unless it’s happening consistently and over a period of time, it’s not ED. Here are some of the more common causes of erectile dysfunction: Diet, Exercise, and Lifestyle The sad truth is that in a significant number of cases, erectile dysfunction is a condition we bring upon ourselves. Even when these things aren’t the outright cause of ED, they’re almost certain to be contributing factors that make your condition worse. This is a big, expansive category that covers a lot of ground, but in a nutshell, here’s what you need to know. Eating lots of leafy greens, whole grains, oysters, watermelon, and blueberries (most any fruit will work, really) will help you give your body all that it needs to improve the quality of your erections, while cutting out processed foods, cigarettes and alcohol will provide further benefits. Add in a healthy dose of exercise at least three times per week, and you’re well on your way to better sexual health! The Meds You Take You’ve almost certainly seen various medications advertised on TV. The funny part about those ads is that they spend almost as much time talking about the side effects of their latest “wonder drugs” as they do about its supposed benefits. Unfortunately, many of the drugs on the market today that are designed to treat various conditions, have side effects that include the degradation of male sexual performance. The most common of these are blood pressure medications, but there are many others. The good news is that in many cases, there are often (but not always) alternatives to the meds with these side effects. If that’s the case, your doctor can prescribe you an alternative to help alleviate the problem. Your Big Brain Working Against Your Little Brain Many of the causes of erectile dysfunction are actually psychological. Understand that this is not the same as saying that it’s all in your head, because it’s not. Psychological issues can easily lead to a variety of very real physical ailments. If that surprises you, it shouldn’t. Stress can lead to heart disease, so why can’t other psychological issues lead to ED? It’s a pretty common, fairly well understood phenomenon. Stress is, in fact, one of the leading causes of ED, which makes it a particularly nasty condition (because it also can lead to heart troubles, so it hits you twice). Long before stress kills you though, it will impact your sex life in a major, and entirely negative way. Our modern society is filled to the point of overflowing with stress triggers. We work too many hours. We don’t take enough vacations, and even when we do, we tend to bring our work with us, thanks to the advent of the smart phone, which is both a blessing and a curse. Yes, it lets us keep in touch with friends and families no matter where we are in the world, but it also means that we have the tendency to never unplug. We need that. We need time to decompress and relax. Sure, you can run at top speed for a while, but if you do it too long, you’ll burn yourself out. Alcohol is the most widely used substance, and although a little is okay, heavy use will result in erectile dysfunction, also known as “whiskey dick.” Alcohol is a depressant, and it depresses or blunts the nerves that are important in causing erection. Amphetamines and cocaine: they seem to increase sexual desire and sexual performance initially, but pretty quickly you burn out. Meth users notice they have increased sexual desire but an inability to keep their erection. They call it “crystal dick.” And after a while, they actually lose their sexual desire, lose their ability to have erections, or to even have sexual climax, and this is true for most classes of amphetamines, and cocaine as well. Fortunately, all these dysfunctions can be reversed and improved, once a person stops abusing these substances. The body really has a remarkable ability to heal itself and repair itself. But the best course of action, of course, is to avoid abusing these substances in the first place, and instead, derive maximal pleasure from the biggest sex organ in your body: your brain. Zachariah Reitano was 17 when he took his first stress test. His heart rate peaked to 240 beats per minute and he collapsed on the treadmill. It was a scary thing that never would've happened if he hadn't talked to his dad about his erectile dysfunction.
