Melbourne Park Redevelopment
The 2016 Australian Open also marks the next phase of the Melbourne Park redevelopment project. Once the final ball is bounced and the Australian Open champion is named, construction will start on the refurbishment of the Rod Laver Arena that will allow the iconic entertainment venue to host even more shows and bigger productions. The refurbishment is part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to delivering the $338 million stage 2 redevelopment of Melbourne Park, which includes the Rod Laver Arena refurbishment as well as the Batman Avenue Bridge and a new administration and media building. Among the improvements are a new Eastern entrance, retractable seating and more food options with works expected to be completed in 2019. The new footbridge over Batman Avenue will be completed in time for the 2017 Australian Open, bringing the precinct even closer to the city for the bumper crowds that continue to flock through the Melbourne Park gates year after year for one of the world’s most watched sporting events

John Brumby - $363 million boost keeps Australian Open in Melbourne
Melbourne Park will remain the home of the Australian Open for generations to come thanks to a multi-million dollar transformation of the world-class sporting precinct. Premier John Brumby said a major facelift to Margaret Court Arena including the installation of a new retractable roof and an additional 1500 seats and a new Eastern Plaza that will house 21 new courts, were the major highlights of the $363 million first stage of the redevelopment. Victorians are passionate about their sport and the Australian Open is one of the major highlights on Melbournes world-class international sporting calendar, Mr Brumby said. Transcript $363 million boost keeps Australian Open in Melbourne 19 January 2010 [footage of Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs James Merlino at the press conference announcing the redevelopment of Melbourne Park] James Merlino Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs Merlino: Welcome to what is an historic announcement for the future of Australian and indeed international tennis, an announcement that is the culmination of more than two years of hard work. It now gives me great pleasure to call on the Premier of Victoria to unveil the future of the Australian Tennis Open. [footage of Premier John Brumby at the press conference announcing the redevelopment of Melbourne Park] John Brumby Premier of Victoria Brumby: Great to have everyone here today for what is a fantastic announcement and you are going to see in a few moments, when you watch the fly-over of this, just what a wonderful announcement this is for tennis, for our State, for sport generally and for the Grand Slam. Today I am announcing that our government is committing $363 million to redevelop this magnificent Melbourne Park precinct. And our aim in doing this is obviously to secure this event for Melbourne for decades, for generations to come, it's to provide the best possible tennis facilities. And can I say more generally, when you think of the work that has gone on in this precinct, at the MCG, the Rectangular Stadium and now Melbourne Park, this will build this precinct into what is the best sports precinct anywhere in the world. That's our vision, that's our dream, and I believe the announcement today of this $363 million will achieve that goal. All of this I think is great for tennis, great for players, great for spectators, great for our State and in a broader sense, given so many hundreds of millions of people around the world watch this event, great for Australia as well. It is true to say that we love our sport in Victoria, and we determined to build on this reputation as the best sporting city anywhere in the world. And this investment, as I have said building on what we have done at the MCG, building on the Rectangular Stadium, ensures that this will be the best sports precinct anywhere in the world. www.premier.vic.gov.au

Hitler rants about Zangief Kid a.k.a Bully Smackdown video
Adolf Hitler (Bruno Ganz) rants about liking Casey Heynes a.k.a Zangief Kid, a young 16 year old boy who stood up to a bully who was 12 year old Richard Gale (skinny boy). When Richard kept provoking him, Casey then snapped and violently subdued Richard by lifting him and throwing him down to the ground like a wrestler from WWE. Richard suffered only a grazed knee. Both boys were suspended Casey for 4, and Richard for 21. When the video was uploaded on the internet, Casey then became an instant hero. There were many praises from people around the world and when the video was shown in the news, a lot of people adored him. During Justin Bieber's Australian tour of his debut concert tour known as My World Tour, Casey, along with his father and sister were flown from Sydney to Melbourne. At the meeting place, Justin converses with Casey and invited him to the show. On the day itself, the Heynes family had VIP seats in Rod Laver Arena. Justin invited Casey onstage and after a short while, Casey introduced the next song, NEVER SAY NEVER. When the interview of Richard Gale was shown, many people placed hate comments about him. The US Open Tennis 2016‬, ‪Arthur Ashe Stadium shiny new roof
The US Open Tennis 2016‬, ‪Arthur Ashe Stadium shiny new roof As the US Open got under way here on Monday the air was full of uncertainties. Would Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams, the two world No 1s, be able to overcome their respective wrist and shoulder problems? Could Andy Murray crown his magnificent summer by winning his fourth Grand Slam title? And how would the new “all-vegan and vegetarian” outlet in the food court compete with the tournament’s traditional turnover of 225,000 hamburgers and hot dogs? In the end there was probably only one certainty: that the sun would shine. As the spectacular new retractable roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium makes its debut at this tournament, the weather forecast suggests – just as Wimbledon experienced in the year when the Centre Court roof first came into operation – that the glorious sunshine of the opening day will continue for most of the fortnight. Indeed, since the United States Tennis Association decided to install the roof after rain delays forced the tournament to finish on a Monday for five years in a row, the weather, typically, has rarely been a problem here. The gleaming white roof – complete with the inevitable enormous sponsor’s logos - dominates the skyline around Flushing Meadows and is a triumph of engineering. The underlying ground in Corona Park was not stable enough to support a new 5,000-ton roof placed on top of the cavernous 24,000-capacity Arthur Ashe Stadium, so instead it has been built as a stand-alone structure around the existing arena, sitting on 24 huge steel columns. The opening covered by the retractable roof measures 250ft by 250ft, which is the equivalent of more than 20 tennis courts. It shuts in just seven minutes and in most cases the players will not leave the court while it is closing. ashe-2.jpg The retractable roof in action - part of a $550m redevelopment of Flushing Meadow (Getty) Murray, who plays his first-round match against Lukas Rosol in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday night, is among those who have been impressed. “I think it’s great,” the world No 2 said. “I practised under the roof the other day. It does look amazing and it’s very quick to open and close. There shouldn’t be too many delays. I think it’s a good thing for the players, for the TV, for the media, fans. It works well for everyone. I’ll bet it doesn’t rain this year.” A number of other improvements have been made this year for the 700,000-odd spectators at what organisers here like to point out is the world’s best attended annual sporting event. The old Grandstand, which was the main show court until Arthur Ashe Stadium was opened in 1997, has been replaced by an imaginatively designed 16-sided structure which retains some of the former arena’s quirkiness. The new Grandstand has more than 8,000 seats, but with a sunken playing area has a welcome feeling of intimacy. A major new walkway between the east and west sides of the venue has improved access to all areas of the complex, which has been transformed since the first phase of redevelopment in 2011, when a new 2,800-capacity Court 17 was opened. Once this tournament is over, the 10,100-seat Louis Armstrong Stadium will be demolished, to be replaced in 2018 by a new 14,000-capacity arena. The current phase of redevelopment has cost $550m (more than £420m) and came after both Wimbledon and the Australian Open embarked on major improvement programmes. Although the French Open’s expansion plans have been hampered by the limited capacity of Roland Garros and by opposition from environmentalists and local pressure groups, the general pattern at the four Grand Slam events has been one of rapid growth, strengthening their position at the pinnacle of the sport and increasing the gap between them and the next level of tournaments. andy-murray.jpg Andy Murray is a fan of the new-look arena (Clive Brunskill/Getty Images) Wimbledon’s next major building programme began within days of Murray winning his second All England Club title last month as work started on removing the roof on No 1 Court, which will have a retractable cover in place by 2019. The cost could match the £100m-plus which was estimated to be the price of Centre Court’s roof. Wimbledon has also built new No 2 and No 3 Courts in recent years and there are plans for several other improvements in the near future. source:independent.co.uk This video is about us open 2015 us open 2016 tennis us open 2016 golf location us open 2016 merchandise us open 2016 volunteer oakmont us open 2016 us open 2016 live stream us open 2016 tv schedule

Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy | Audiobook with subtitles | Part 2 of 2
Far From The Madding Crowd is Hardy's fourth novel. It centres on the lives of five characters: Gabriel Oak, Bathsheba Everdene, Mr Boldwood, Sgt. Troy and Fanny Robin. The plot involves love, loyalty, death and betrayal and all this is delivered to us in Hardy's most eloquent prose. The images of character and nature are painted for our mind's eye with sublime style. Finally, but not least, Hardy's use of the Greek chorus is unsurpassed in injecting comedy and nudging the story along. Calling All Cars: The Long-Bladed Knife / Murder with Mushrooms / The Pink-Nosed Pig
The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role. The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station. Due to Dragnet's popularity, LAPD Chief Parker "became, after J. Edgar Hoover, the most well known and respected law enforcement official in the nation". In the 1960s, when the LAPD under Chief Thomas Reddin expanded its community relations division and began efforts to reach out to the African-American community, Dragnet followed suit with more emphasis on internal affairs and community policing than solving crimes, the show's previous mainstay. Several prominent representations of the LAPD and its officers in television and film include Adam-12, Blue Streak, Blue Thunder, Boomtown, The Closer, Colors, Crash, Columbo, Dark Blue, Die Hard, End of Watch, Heat, Hollywood Homicide, Hunter, Internal Affairs, Jackie Brown, L.A. Confidential, Lakeview Terrace, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Life, Numb3rs, The Shield, Southland, Speed, Street Kings, SWAT, Training Day and the Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Terminator film series. The LAPD is also featured in the video games Midnight Club II, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, L.A. Noire and Call of Juarez: The Cartel. The LAPD has also been the subject of numerous novels. Elizabeth Linington used the department as her backdrop in three different series written under three different names, perhaps the most popular being those novel featuring Det. Lt. Luis Mendoza, who was introduced in the Edgar-nominated Case Pending. Joseph Wambaugh, the son of a Pittsburgh policeman, spent fourteen years in the department, using his background to write novels with authentic fictional depictions of life in the LAPD. Wambaugh also created the Emmy-winning TV anthology series Police Story. Wambaugh was also a major influence on James Ellroy, who wrote several novels about the Department set during the 1940s and 1950s, the most famous of which are probably The Black Dahlia, fictionalizing the LAPD's most famous "cold case", and L.A. Confidential, which was made into a film of the same name. Both the novel and the film chronicled mass-murder and corruption inside and outside the force during the Parker era. Critic Roger Ebert indicates that the film's characters (from the 1950s) "represent the choices ahead for the LAPD": assisting Hollywood limelight, aggressive policing with relaxed ethics, and a "straight arrow" approach. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAPD

My Friend Irma: Aunt Harriet to Visit / Did Irma Buy Her Own Wedding Ring / Planning a Vacation
My Friend Irma, created by writer-director-producer Cy Howard, is a top-rated, long-run radio situation comedy, so popular in the late 1940s that its success escalated to films, television, a comic strip and a comic book, while Howard scored with another radio comedy hit, Life with Luigi. Marie Wilson portrayed the title character, Irma Peterson, on radio, in two films and a television series. The radio series was broadcast from April 11, 1947 to August 23, 1954. Dependable, level-headed Jane Stacy (Cathy Lewis, Diana Lynn) began each weekly radio program by narrating a misadventure of her innocent, bewildered roommate, Irma, a dim-bulb stenographer from Minnesota. The two central characters were in their mid-twenties. Irma had her 25th birthday in one episode; she was born on May 5. After the two met in the first episode, they lived together in an apartment rented from their Irish landlady, Mrs. O'Reilly (Jane Morgan, Gloria Gordon). Irma's boyfriend Al (John Brown) was a deadbeat, barely on the right side of the law, who had not held a job in years. Only someone like Irma could love Al, whose nickname for Irma was "Chicken". Al had many crazy get-rich-quick schemes, which never worked. Al planned to marry Irma at some future date so she could support him. Professor Kropotkin (Hans Conried), the Russian violinist at the Princess Burlesque theater, lived upstairs. He greeted Jane and Irma with remarks like, "My two little bunnies with one being an Easter bunny and the other being Bugs Bunny." The Professor insulted Mrs. O'Reilly, complained about his room and reluctantly became O'Reilly's love interest in an effort to make her forget his back rent. Irma worked for the lawyer, Mr. Clyde (Alan Reed). She had such an odd filing system that once when Clyde fired her, he had to hire her back again because he couldn't find anything. Useless at dictation, Irma mangled whatever Clyde dictated. Asked how long she had been with Clyde, Irma said, "When I first went to work with him he had curly black hair, then it got grey, and now it's snow white. I guess I've been with him about six months." Irma became less bright as the program evolved. She also developed a tendency to whine or cry whenever something went wrong, which was at least once every show. Jane had a romantic inclination for her boss, millionaire Richard Rhinelander (Leif Erickson), but he had no real interest in her. Another actor in the show was Bea Benaderet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Friend_Irma_%28radio-TV%29 Katherine Elisabeth Wilson (August 19, 1916 -- November 23, 1972), better known by her stage name, Marie Wilson, was an American radio, film, and television actress. She may be best remembered as the title character in My Friend Irma. Born in Anaheim, California, Wilson began her career in New York City as a dancer on the Broadway stage. She gained national prominence with My Friend Irma on radio, television and film. The show made her a star but typecast her almost interminably as the quintessential dumb blonde, which she played in numerous comedies and in Ken Murray's famous Hollywood "Blackouts". During World War II, she was a volunteer performer at the Hollywood Canteen. She was also a popular wartime pin-up. Wilson's performance in Satan Met a Lady, the second film adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's detective novel The Maltese Falcon, is a virtual template for Marilyn Monroe's later onscreen persona. Wilson appeared in more than 40 films and was a guest on The Ed Sullivan Show on four occasions. She was a television performer during the 1960s, working until her untimely death. Wilson's talents have been recognized with three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame: for radio at 6301 Hollywood Boulevard, for television at 6765 Hollywood Boulevard and for movies at 6601 Hollywood Boulevard. Wilson married four times: Nick Grinde (early 1930s), LA golf pro Bob Stevens (1938--39), Allan Nixon (1942--50) and Robert Fallon (1951--72). She died of cancer in 1972 at age 56 and was interred in the Columbarium of Remembrance at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Wilson_%28American_actress%29

The Great Gildersleeve: Leroy's Paper Route / Marjorie's Girlfriend Visits / Hiccups
The Great Gildersleeve (1941--1957), initially written by Leonard Lewis Levinson, was one of broadcast history's earliest spin-off programs. Built around Throckmorton Philharmonic Gildersleeve, a character who had been a staple on the classic radio situation comedy Fibber McGee and Molly, first introduced on Oct. 3, 1939, ep. #216. The Great Gildersleeve enjoyed its greatest success in the 1940s. Actor Harold Peary played the character during its transition from the parent show into the spin-off and later in a quartet of feature films released at the height of the show's popularity. On Fibber McGee and Molly, Peary's Gildersleeve was a pompous windbag who became a consistent McGee nemesis. "You're a haa-aa-aa-aard man, McGee!" became a Gildersleeve catchphrase. The character was given several conflicting first names on Fibber McGee and Molly, and on one episode his middle name was revealed as Philharmonic. Gildy admits as much at the end of "Gildersleeve's Diary" on the Fibber McGee and Molly series (Oct. 22, 1940). Premiering on August 31, 1941, The Great Gildersleeve moved the title character from the McGees' Wistful Vista to Summerfield, where Gildersleeve now oversaw his late brother-in-law's estate and took on the rearing of his orphaned niece and nephew, Marjorie (originally played by Lurene Tuttle and followed by Louise Erickson and Mary Lee Robb) and Leroy Forester (Walter Tetley). The household also included a cook named Birdie. Curiously, while Gildersleeve had occasionally spoken of his (never-present) wife in some Fibber episodes, in his own series the character was a confirmed bachelor. In a striking forerunner to such later television hits as Bachelor Father and Family Affair, both of which are centered on well-to-do uncles taking in their deceased siblings' children, Gildersleeve was a bachelor raising two children while, at first, administering a girdle manufacturing company ("If you want a better corset, of course, it's a Gildersleeve") and then for the bulk of the show's run, serving as Summerfield's water commissioner, between time with the ladies and nights with the boys. The Great Gildersleeve may have been the first broadcast show to be centered on a single parent balancing child-rearing, work, and a social life, done with taste and genuine wit, often at the expense of Gildersleeve's now slightly understated pomposity. Many of the original episodes were co-written by John Whedon, father of Tom Whedon (who wrote The Golden Girls), and grandfather of Deadwood scripter Zack Whedon and Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog). The key to the show was Peary, whose booming voice and facility with moans, groans, laughs, shudders and inflection was as close to body language and facial suggestion as a voice could get. Peary was so effective, and Gildersleeve became so familiar a character, that he was referenced and satirized periodically in other comedies and in a few cartoons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Gildersleeve

Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling "Bravo!" in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.) Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality. Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely. And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
