Prozac, Paxil & Drug Interactions With Amphetamines for ADHD

This Prozac and Paxil interaction have lived on my clinical radar since '96 - and is the most frequently denied drug interaction in thousands of second opinions. If you take either of these two antidepressants together with an amphetamine, watch out. You can significantly become overdosed on the amphetamine. Often the interaction can unpredictably occur several months later. The patient becomes toxic to the amphetamine, angry, irrational, can't sleep, can't eat, and can become dangerously destructive. The Adderall or Vyvanse often gets blamed. This is one of my top three recommended videos for starting ADHD/Executive Function treatment: http://www.corepsych.com/basic-3 The treatment for these two often comorbid conditions needs careful attention to both of these diagnostic issues: *Dopamine - ADHD - products don't correct serotonin imbalances, but, on the other hand, make them worse. *Serotonin - depression & anxiety - products don't treat ADHD effectively, and more often make ADHD much worse. Years of experience with my own incorrect diagnostic and dosing strategies strongly encourage more informed treatment strategies. http://youtu.be/Wsj219F9M2Q

Prozac: The Military's Secret Weapon

03:26
U.S. combat troops are taking daily doses of antidepressants to calm nerves strained by repeated and lengthy tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. The medicines are intended not only to help troops keep their cool but also to enable the already strapped Army to preserve its most precious resource: soldiers on the front lines. Data contained in the Army's fifth Mental Health Advisory Team report indicate that, according to an anonymous survey of U.S. troops taken last fall, about 12% of combat troops in Iraq and 17% of those in Afghanistan are taking prescription antidepressants or sleeping pills to help them cope. Escalating violence in Afghanistan and the more isolated mission have driven troops to rely more on medication there than in Iraq, military officials say. At a Pentagon that keeps statistics on just about everything, there is no central clearinghouse for this kind of data, and the Army hasn't consistently asked about prescription-drug use, which makes it difficult to track. Given the traditional stigma associated with soldiers seeking mental help, the survey, released in March, probably underestimates antidepressant use. But if the Army numbers reflect those of other services — the Army has by far the most troops deployed to the war zones — about 20,000 troops in Afghanistan and Iraq were on such medications last fall. The Army estimates that authorized drug use splits roughly fifty-fifty between troops taking antidepressants — largely the class of drugs that includes Prozac and Zoloft — and those taking prescription sleeping pills like Ambien. In some ways, the prescriptions may seem unremarkable. Generals, history shows, have plied their troops with medicinal palliatives at least since George Washington ordered rum rations at Valley Forge. During World War II, the Nazis fueled their blitzkrieg into France and Poland with the help of an amphetamine known as Pervitin. The U.S. Army also used amphetamines during the Vietnam War. The increase in the use of medication among U.S. troops suggests the heavy mental and psychological price being paid by soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Pentagon surveys show that while all soldiers deployed to a war zone will feel stressed, 70% will manage to bounce back to normalcy. But about 20% will suffer from what the military calls "temporary stress injuries," and 10% will be afflicted with "stress illnesses." Such ailments, according to briefings commanders get before deploying, begin with mild anxiety and irritability, difficulty sleeping, and growing feelings of apathy and pessimism. As the condition worsens, the feelings last longer and can come to include panic, rage, uncontrolled shaking and temporary paralysis. The symptoms often continue back home, playing a key role in broken marriages, suicides and psychiatric breakdowns. The mental trauma has become so common that the Pentagon may expand the list of "qualifying wounds" for a Purple Heart — historically limited to those physically injured on the battlefield — to include posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on May 2 that it's "clearly something" that needs to be considered, and the Pentagon is weighing the change. Which means that any drug that keeps a soldier deployed and fighting also saves money on training and deploying replacements. But there is a downside: the number of soldiers requiring long-term mental-health services soars with repeated deployments and lengthy combat tours. If troops do not get sufficient time away from combat — both while in theater and during the "dwell time" at home before they go back to war — it's possible that antidepressants and sleeping aids will be used to stretch an already taut force even tighter. "This is what happens when you try to fight a long war with an army that wasn't designed for a long war," says Lawrence Korb, Pentagon personnel chief during the Reagan Administration. http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1811858,00.html

If you take either of these two antidepressants together with an amphetamine, watch out. You can significantly become overdosed on the amphetamine through drug interactions. Often the interaction can unpredictably occur several months later. The patient becomes toxic to the amphetamine, angry, irrational, can't sleep, can't eat, or can become dangerously destructive - even psychotic. The Adderall/Vyvanse/amphetamine often gets blamed. The Prozac and the Paxil are the problems due to inhibiting the metabolism. This specific pathway interaction is relevant also for Concerta and MPH [methylphenidate] products blocking 2D6 when taken with AMP [amphetamine] products. - Should not mix these two. Basic metabolic, body-related imbalances often have far reaching effects that encourage *unpredictable outcomes* with medication management. Just think about this point: How many with ADHD are treated with stimulant meds - without paying attention to the specific attention related targets? The short answer: Far too many. My point on this: Many are treated for thinking problems - without specific thinking about the thinking process. How can anyone get the meds right without precise targets? The Drugging of Our Children | Ritalin and Cocaine: The Connection

01:43:05
Excessive talking, fidgeting or squirming. Often loses things. Difficulty remaining seated, playing quietly, or sustaining attention. Sound like your child? The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) lists these as the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Website: https://www.backtoyourrootsherbs.com Once diagnosed, these behaviors would make your child a candidate for Ritalin, Prozac, or both. In this investigative documentary, acclaimed public health advocate and filmmaker Gary Null examines the increasingly common practice of prescribing psychotropic drugs for children, including preschoolers as young as age 2 to 4, who have been diagnosed with ADD, or ADHD. Psychiatrists may write these prescriptions without first exploring other causes or aggravating factors, like diet, or environment, and without making it clear to parents that these medications can have severe side-effects, including insomnia, loss of appetite, facial tics, headaches, psychotic symptoms and even potentially fatal adverse reactions, such as cardiac arrhythmia. Many schools work with family court systems to force parents to drug their children, threatening those who refuse to cooperate with the prospect of having them taken from the home and placed in foster care. To some, this looks like institutionalized child abuse in the name of mental health, whereby active, naturally inquisitive children are drugged into submission while the pharmaceutical industry prospers. Do stimulants help with depression Stimulants for treatment resistant depression

06:22
Stimulants can sometimes help a patient with this illness. A proper use of stimulants is when the patient that is already on anti-depressants which are not working 100%. By adding a stimulant, the patient often reaches, or comes closer to, the 100% mark. Ritalin Ritalin (methylphenidate) is usually the first stimulant that a doctor would first prescribe, in immediate-release form, 5 mg pill, one or two times a day. Amphetamines Amphetamines are also used - dexedrine (dextromphetamine), adreol (amphetamine salts) and Vyvanse (another form of dexedrine). These are a little more potent and effective than Retalin. A Word about Addiction and Abuse Donald Cline, who wrote the first textbook on psychopharmacology, mentioned that he had patients who came in to the office, confessing that they have been taking 30 mg samples of amphetamines for a long time. They felt guilty because they had become dependent on them. They were using it as an anti-depressant. Furthermore, they only took only the set amount. They were addicted to it in the sense that they needed the drug to function but they were not abusing the drug by taking more to get high. Therefore, if you are taking a prescribed anti-depressant and your symptoms are not entirely gone, consider requesting one of these stimulants from your doctor. Bupropion: What You Need To Know

09:48
Bupropion is an antidepressant and a smoking cessation aid. The drug has been tested in many other conditions, including ADHD, obesity, and seasonal affective disorder. It has multiple pharmacological mechanisms and it's still not entirely clear how bupropion works. Some recreational use has been reported, though the substance usually isn't very pleasant and it can be dangerous. Don't let a doctor prescribe you a benzo medication like klonopin, here's a good reason why.

08:32
If you get even one prescription of a benzodiazepine medication like klonopin (clonazepam), valium (diazepam), xanax (alprazolam), and ativan (lorazepam), etc. your brain will likely become physically dependent on them after a few weeks use and you could end up like me here or worse. You could end up with countless pill bottles of something that might be helping for a couple weeks, but then it stops working as well and you then up the dose. You get your dose high enough to where your breathing starts to become too depressed. Then you decide you want to come off the meds. But guess what, you can't just stop them. No, you are in for what is going to likely be over a year of trying to taper off your medication because even the smallest cut in dose is going to bring complete hell of withdrawal side effects. These meds change the gaba properties in your brain, the chemical that helps calm your nervous system. When you start cutting the benzo medication out, your brain takes it harshly and takes a long time to adjust back to controlling gaba on its own again. Please trust me when I say do not touch a benzo unless its your last hope. You may end up like me, or countless other people duped by their doctors into getting hooked on something that you are given no warning about its effects both during use and the complete hell of trying to come off of them.

How to understand Mixing Methadone with other medications with Dr Rodriquez and Delray Center

02:47
Mixing Methadone with other medications "Lets talk about mixing Methadone with other medications its rather common in modern medicine for a patient to take more then one medicine. That holds true for people on Methadone as well. Now Methadone can be taken safely with most antidepressants. Although some antidepressants do have interactions with Methadone that have to be accounted for. Fluoxetine or prozac is notable in that it interacts with Methadone and will tend to prolong the half-life of Methadone. This results in the Methadone dosage having to be adjusted often times may lower for safety reason. Other medications also have significant interactions with Methadone that are more concerning. Medications from the benzodiazepine family such as xanax klonopin and Valium do mix with Methadone and the actual mix can have a very powerful effect on the human body. This affect can be dangerous and can lead into an accidental overdose if not accounted for carefully with they dosage. Usually when medications are mixed and both medications are controlled substances with direct interactions that can affect a person's ability to hold their heartbeat and there regular breathing dosage adjustments have to be made. These adjustments are done by a licensed and qualified physicians and should never be done by any patient on their own at home. If somebody is ever having doubts as far as medications that they are taking at the same time with Methadone they should contact their physician or the nearest emergency room to clarify that to avoid any potential risks. Medications like xanax in particular do not mix well with Methadone and can cause intoxication these intoxications can be dangerous and can lead an untimely overdose. At a lower overdose that would ever be expected with Methadone alone. Again this is why the doses have to be accounted for by your physician. Now again it is possible to take these medications and others when the person is compliant with their medicines at the proper doses when all doses have been accounted for by the physician and when the person is demonstrating good tolerability to the medication regimen. Whenever a medication like this is added to Methadone it is often best to take the first dose or two in the office under direct physician observation for purely safety reasons." Codeine: What You Need To Know

18:42
Codeine is an opioid found naturally in Papaver somniferum, the opium poppy. It's somewhat misleading to call it an opioid since codeine primarily functions as a prodrug, offering little of its own activity. Morphine seems to be its primary active metabolite. The drug is typically a controlled substance, yet it may also be available over-the-counter (OTC) in certain combinations. Its name comes from the Greek word "kodeia," which means "poppy head." Medically, codeine is used as an analgesic, antitussive, and antidiarrheal. It's also taken recreationally, often at higher doses. 27:19
This week we interview Elaine who has taken antidepressant and stimulant drugs for anxiety issues such as OCD. She describes her experiences with the drugs, how she approached her withdrawal and describes feeling humiliated and judged by her psychiatrists rather than helped. In this episode we discuss: How Elaine came to be taking Prozac for anxiety issues How she became troubled by anxious thoughts and fears while in college That she stopped Prozac cold turkey after one year of use because she felt it stopped working That Elaine then tried a range of different drugs but with no relief until settling on Zoloft How Elaine was afraid to stop the drugs in case her symptoms came back and felt that she needed the drugs How a family move and motherhood put such strain on Elaine that she felt that her condition was deteriorating That she felt that it was like a ritual humiliation seeing her doctors How a nurse practitioner suggested that Elaine attended an out-patient mental health clinic and Elaine was shocked at how she was treated, particularly by the psychiatrist That the psychiatrist seemed more interested in compliance rather than progress being made How Elaine started to research for herself and found personal accounts that resonated with her own experience of trying to stop the drugs That Elaine was on a stimulant drug for a short time but that too stopped working That Elaine is now struggling to withdraw from 150 milligrams of Effexor by counting her beads to reduce by approximately 10% per month Elaine describes electric shock sensations that feel like a buzzing or tingling How doctors continue to give out advice that can be harmful when it comes to withdrawal from psychiatric drugs, particularly after long term use How Elaine felt invalidated by the medical profession because she had a ‘disorder’ How Elaine witnessed a man with tardive dyskinesia and it was an image that she will never forget That Elaine was accused of over inflating the risks of the drugs because of her anxiety diagnosis That people may get short term symptom relief at the cost long term vitality by taking the drugs Podcast show notes: http://www.jfmoore.co.uk/LTW_episode_27.html To give me your feedback please email me on feedback@jfmoore.co.uk © James Moore 2017

In my last year of High School I had a Nervous Breakdown, this was in the 70's when being queer ,a person of colour, poor working class was mental illness ( the norm being straight , middle class and white)and i was an out lesbian at the time. I spent some time locked up in the Clarke institute of Psychiatry, I had banged on a former lovers door and then tried to jump off the building she lived in on Broadview . I was taken there by the police and , I was made to take drugs, if I refused a team of 3-6 health people would throw me on the floor and hit me up with a syringe full of drugs, first you get put to sleep for 3 days then you are given more drug 3-6 times a day and night. The dorm was like the cuckoos nest ( film)all ages, all genders , a lot of us gender queer with one other young lesbian who was locked up for being queerr by her family,I recall shuffling and salivating around in a hospital gown, shock treatments and straight jackets. I was filled with shame when visitors came and couldn't speak my tongue was swollen too big. The psychiatrist said being mixed race and being butch, being queer would need to be corrected, I begged to get out and finally did ( time is uncountable when you are that high) I had done street drugs but they paled in comparison to the knock you off your ass drugs like, stelazine and thorozine Anyway I kept quiet about this experience but in coming out in this songs as a locked up mental patient I realize now I had nothing to be ashamed of. The real crime was being committed against me by the state, I was beaten and thrown around nightly thankfully no pain because of the mandatory drugs.of "gender bending", racism, compulsory gender conformity, compulsory heterosexism . Today there are more drugs( prescription than ever . The money making pharmaceutical industrial complex has become huge . high from childhood( ritalin, to working years(prozac etc..) to old age drugs. We need a healing better than that. We need a society that allows for difference, talks, heals, cares, shares, where homes jobs housing and healing centers are on every corner,a part of everyday life. Where anti-racism, sexism, homophobia, classism are unlearned so instead of dividing us so the master (the 1%) horde all the planets resources are shared. Adderall Abuse

04:19
TYLER (KYTX) - Have you ever thought your child may be taking the most abused drug in America, and you knew about it? It's true. Adderall has been named as the most abused and over-used legal drug. It may seem harmless, and if it's prescribed to you and taken correctly, it can work wonders. But the problem arises when students buy it to get through an all nighter, stay up for a great party, or even moms who need a pick-me-up to last. The scary part, it's made of amphetamine. "It worked. I focused. I did all of my assignments," says Shane. He has asked not to be identified , but agreed to talk to us about his use of adderall in college. "Adderall was an easy fix to help me focus," says Shane. He was prescribed adderall his second semester, but quickly learned the drug that helped him pay attention, was highly coveted. "When they would find out I was prescribed this medication, you would see people's eyes light up. And they would say, 'well, let me have a couple.' Then it was 'let me buy a couple.' Then after they bought a couple, it was let me buy your whole prescription," say Shane. Studies show college students are most likely to try adderall or something similar. Most numbers estimate 20-30 percent of college students will take it to help them keep their eyes open and their nose in the books for a few more hours to study or for extra fun on a night out. "You're playing Russian Roulette with these kinds of medications," says Dr. Bryan Lowery with Trinity Clinic Manhatton. Dr. Lowery says taking someone else's prescribed medication could be deadly. "A lot of kids that take it will have palpitations, headaches, shortness of breath. They'll have anxiety or a panic attack," says Dr. Lowery. Side affects of a drug you shouldn't be using, and the mis-use goes beyond co-eds, right to suburbia. "Moms want this medication to get that energy during the day. Help them be focused, get all the things done tat they can when their kids are in school," says Dr. Lowery. What is a legal fix for some, can be a wonder drug for others. "Adderall, rittalin, these different kinds of drugs have been around for a long time, are basically derivatives of methamphetamines. Which, methamphetamine is illegal, these are legal and people are using it in illegal ways," says Dr. Lowery. A derivative of meth, a highly addictive drug. These legal narcotics used illegally are being sold, turning some into campus dealers. "If I could sell a prescription that cost me $7 for $200, I was going to do it. And I did it every time after that," says Shane. Shane stopped using his adderall, but his addiction continued. "In my mind I needed that kick to keep me going, and then I could get that kick from the coke that somebody had that I could trade for," says Shane. Creating a bigger problem with drugs for years. Doctors say using most any drug can open doors for others, and that's why it's important to Dr. Lowery to vet patients, make sure they don't try to self diagnose a problem, or ask for anything by name. "Most patients should go through a thorough evaluation, and I would say a neurological evaluation," says Dr. Lowery. Keeping prescriptions out of the wrong hands, so they don't have to experience anything that could lead them to more drugs, or something worse. "Who's to blame? The doctors, the patients, the drug dealers, the drug companies?" asks Shane. In the state of Texas, adderall and other amphetamine based drugs are regulated and watched very closely. Doctors fill out forms that are copied to the state and a database that houses patients names and information on where they obtained that prescription. That allows doctors to know if the patient is asking for the same medicine in multiple places. Not only does take the medication illegally have health implications, but it carries legal ramifications too. The sale, possession and use of adderall for illegitimate purposes is a felony.
