It came back really high. I’d like to know what kinds of food I can make for him to help him lower his cholesterol. He doesn’t want to be on medicine and would like to first change his diet. Please help! Nancy, I don’t blame him that’s a good idea. A lot of people don’t want to get on medicine to lower their cholesterol. The good news is you can lower your LDL with what you eat very effectively. I have in front of me – nuts. Nuts of all kinds – Brazil nuts, pecans, cashews, almonds. Let’s see. This is a marcona almond. Each one of these has been shown to lower LDL or lousy cholesterol. It is amazing. So is flax meal, so have some special margarines, Benecol and Take Control, so have all high fiber foods that are high in soluble fiber. Oats are actually just perfect – especially steel cut oats. There is even some interesting evidence for cinnamon. The foods that raise bad cholesterol, those with saturated or trans fats, full-fat cheeses, full fat meats, butter, cream, pastry. Trans- fat foods- almost anything that is deep fried unfortunately has trans-fat. And to raise your healthy cholesterol - red wine and omega 3 rich fish.
