Thursday 17th May, 2018 at the Radisson Blu Hotel Nairobi The Kenyan Judiciary is an independent, impartial, transparent and accountable institution anchored under Article 159 of the Constitution. It derives its authority from the people of Kenya and it is bound by the National Values and Principles of Governance as enshrined in Article 10 of the Constitution. Its mission is to deliver justice fairly, impartially and expeditiously, promote equal access to justice, and advance local jurisprudence by upholding the rule of law. The 2011 Judicial Service Act governs the administration of the Judiciary as well as its functions, among other things. Established in 1996, the Commercial Division of the High Court within the Kenyan Judiciary has the mandate to make litigation faster, fairer and more accessible to the business community and, by so doing, enhance foreign investment through fostering investor confidence. In particular, the establishment of the Commercial Division was founded on the general rationale for setting up specialized courts and tribunals, in order to ensure improved delivery of commercial justice better case management and improved, specialized jurisprudence. In September 2016, the “Needs Survey for Commercial Justice in Kenya” by Lucid Options Consulting report was finalised for the Investment Climate Programme of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nairobi, Kenya (EKN). The Report provides the Embassy with an overview of the justice needs and impediments in commercial litigation in Kenya and indicates how the Embassy can support improvements in this area particularly for Dutch businesses and other private sector and foreign investors. The Kenyan Judiciary agreed with the recommendations of the Report and requested for assistance in the implementation of the proposed intervention strategies as part of the on-going judiciary transformation agenda. Specifically, assistance will be provided to the Judiciary to further strengthen Kenya’s business climate by encouraging increased investment through confidence in its commercial justice systems, by ensuring quality and efficient commercial justice systems that respond to key indicators of improved business climate, including availability of court structures and processes for commercial matters; strong case management that includes standardization, regulations and electronic case management systems; other on-going court automation improvements, including the ability to file, serve, and pay fees electronically; and the availability and regulation of alternative dispute resolution methods for commercial matters (inclusive of both arbitration and voluntary mediation). The launch event was overseen by the International Development Law Organization (IDLO). IDLO Kenya has been providing critical support to the Judiciary since 2011 towards the implementation of the Judiciary Transformation Framework, the Strategic Plan 2014-2018, as well as the Sustaining Judiciary Transformation (SJT): A Service Delivery Agenda (2017-2021). Specifically, on commercial law, it has been working closely with the Commercial and Tax Division of the High Court since late 2015 to date by providing comprehensive technical support towards the operationalization of the Judicial Audio and Visual Transcription System and to the Court-Annexed Mediation Pilot Project in the Commercial Division. © Kymsnet 2018

Conference Policies&Practices on Public Private Partnerships to develop social policies

03:20
Public private partnerships to develop social policies January 29 2013 - Radisson Blu Hotel, Brussels Cooperation between the public and the private sectors in several areas managed by the public authorities has been in place since the 1990s, this with the aim of improving public services through risk sharing and of harnessing private-sector expertise. Thus, Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) create added value thanks to the integration and complementarities of public and private sector skills, knowledge and expertise. In the context of austerity, PPPs can be a tool to implement Member States' policies in a cost-effective way: they can reduce costs, improve and speed up the completion of projects, while at the same time, incorporating important social benefits into a project, such as quality criteria, safety conditions, or measures that will help tailor projects to the specific needs of local communities. PPPs are not legally defined at European level but they are mostly developed within the framework of infrastructural policies in areas such as energy, transport or telecommunications. Nonetheless, in the past few years, a second branch of PPPs has diverged from a contractual cooperation to a more comprehensive partnership. This change has been facilitated through access to EU funds as a result of which businesses, together with the public authorities, can actively participate in the development or the implementation of social policies. In this new frame, all the stakeholders share the same goals, which has furthered collaboration no end. The third Policies & Practices' session will focus on this evolution and more specifically on: •Efficiency in the delivery of social services •Cost-effectiveness in public spending •Access to quality and affordable social services for all To address these questions two speakers will present their recent works: Dr. Lieve Fransen, Director responsible for Europe 2020: Social Policies in Directorate-General Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion of the European Commission Maxime Cerutti, Director of BUSINESSEUROPE's social affairs department More info on our website: www.policiesandpractices.eu

Sierra Leone: Keeping Travelers and Staff Safe at Lungi International Airport

08:29
The IOM Health and Humanitarian Border Management (HHBM) project currently in Phase II of operations, began on 17 November 2014 to monitor the Exit and Entry Health Screening (EEHS) SOP at Lungi International Airport (FNA) in partnership with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Sierra Leonean Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Port Health, the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, the Sierra Leone Airport Authority and the International Security Advisory Team. Since that time it has achieved 100% coverage across all UN and commercial flights to Sierra Leone and as of June 2015 has screened over 60,000 passengers. The Airport project team of 25 monitors and support staff which works in shifts 24/7 has also developed a training curriculum for Airport personnel, a pocket guide on the EEHS SOP and trained over 300 Immigration, Police and Health personnel. IOM’s mobile training teams have also conducted Infection Prevention and Control training for IOM Airport monitors as well as Airport personnel. In January, February and again in April, IOM implemented Emergency Simulation Exercises to test and improve the entry and exit health screening process and general health security throughout the Airport by using Ebola survivors employed at IOM’s National Ebola Training Academy in Freetown to act out preplanned emergency scenarios. This project and related activities ensure that the commercial viability of the Airport- an indispensable lifeline for Sierra Leone- remains intact despite the epidemic. Since 1 June 2015, HHBM project activities have rapidly expanded to land borders in Kambia and Bombali on the Guinea border, seaports in Freetown, and inter-district boundaries inside Sierra Leone between Kambia and Port Loko, the last major hotspots in the country. In support of the Government of Sierra Leone’s recently announced Operation Northern Push, IOM has scaled up activities in Kambia district in a push to get to zero new Ebola cases by early July. http://www.iom.int/news/sierra-leone-doubles-efforts-achieve-zero-new-ebola-cases-mid-july (IOM PBN from 19 June 2015 on HHBM expanded activities)

Jon Huntsman Political Ad

01:01
Our wonderful teacher of our AP Government class in our school tasked us to creating a political ad for a man we had never heard of two weeks prior. This is the result. We do not own any of the music in the video, all themes from Transformers II belong to their respective owners. This is not paid for or endorsed by Jon Huntsman nor any Political Action Committees, again, this is a school project, nothing more.

Chief's Update: Contractors, Traffic Lights, Fire Dept., Pan Am, Border Crossing

05:17
Local Contractors – Six Nations Public Works is compiling a list of local contractors to potentially be used in the upcoming Youth and Elders Centre and the new Fire Hall construction projects, as well as any other major Six Nations construction projects thereafter. To qualify, you must have WSIB, be a registered Band member and be adequately qualified in your area of expertise, whether it is local painters, drywallers, etc. If your business is involved in any aspect of constructing a building and meets the criteria, we would like to hear from you. Please contact Laura Beaver at the Public Works Office at 519-445-4242. Highway 6 – We have had accidents at the corners of different roads leading into Highway 6 in the past little while, which has caused a lot of concern to everyone. Council has written to the Minister of Transportation asking if we can meet to discuss whether it might be possible to put stop lights on the roads leading from the reserve on to Highway 6. Hopefully, he will agree to meet and we can do something jointly to prevent more accidents from happening on that highway. Fire Hall – We have received $2 million from Grand River Enterprises for the construction of the new Fire Hall. We are most grateful to GRE for making this contribution to our community service. Plans are progressing with the design and construction of this new facility. Senior Relief Fund – Council does have a Senior Relief Fund, which is administered by our Ontario Works office. This Fund is in place to help our Seniors with emergency expenses. Seniors can obtain the criteria for this Fund from the Ontario Works office. Pan Am Games – The Six Nations Pan Am Games Committee is beginning to plan activities that we want to do at Six Nations during the Pan Am Games that are being held in July and August 2015. We are looking at hosting Festivals, Talent Showcases, Tours, Arts and Crafts Sales, etc. We are also hoping to entice some of the athletes/teams to consider using our facilities as practice venues. All of this is going to cost some money, so we are seeking sponsors to assist with the cost of those activities. If anyone is interested in volunteering to help with our activities or with the Pan Am Games in Toronto, they can contact Kevin Sandy through the Council office. Project Skate Park – A group of young people in our community have been doing fund raising for a Skate Board Park to be located near the arena on land that the Elected Council has designated for this purpose. Their total budget was $250,000 and, as of September 15th, 2014, they only need $7,000. They are hoping to start construction in a couple of weeks, which will enable a Grand Opening of the Park next June. They are continuing with their funding raising efforts and are accepting all personal donations. Please support these hard working kids! Border Crossing Summit – We heard a number of different presentations including one from the Pascua/Macqui Tribe in Tuson, Arizona, who has their own enhanced card for border crossing. We also heard about the many issues that the community of Akwesasne has to deal with. Representatives of the Department of Homeland Security were at the conference and seemed quite willing to work with the First Nations and Tribes. Most of the problems, however, seem to be with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and, unfortunately, they did not have any representatives in attendance at this summit. We also heard from the youth and the problems they experience in crossing the border at Akwesasne. We are going to be working with Akwesasne and other First Nations in trying to meet with CBSA to start addressing these issues.
