THE PILL | My 5 1/2 Year Birth Control Experience (Diane-35)
• Why was I on it? - extreme pain, cystic acne, unwanted body hair • How long was I on it? - 5 1/2 years • How did it perform for what I took it? - no more period pain, very little acne, amount of unwanted hair the same • Unexpected positives? - I quit smoking, my breasts grew, my head hair got thick, my body shape went hourglass • Unexpected negatives? - extreme hunger/ cravings, extremely frequent UTI's, weight gain, looking puffy (breast had weird shape) severe mood swings, queasiness in the morning (felt pregnant), difficulty loosing weight, no more bleeding, no libido, no lubrication (uncomfortable painful when stimulated) / no sex drive that resulted in a change in personality: not taking care of myself in how I dress how I look - sloppy unkempt • How did I quit? - water fasting • Had I planned on quitting? - was hesitant because of period pain returning but knew I had to stop taking them and everybody kept telling me how bad they are for my liver (pickling my liver nonalcoholic) • Period after quitting? - very light at 1st, very slight pain, got a bit more intense over the following months, also vegan changes • How long did it take for the pill to leave my system completely? - 4 to 5 months • Unexpected positives after quitting? - Immediate ease in wright loss, breasts looking normal, felt like myself again (no more foggy brain), libido back, taking care of myself, no mood swings • Unexpected negatives? - my hair fell out (bald patches, clumps of hair in the bath, hair brush), acne came back with a vengeance ( rarely cystic but more of it) • Things that I was fearing and didn't happen? - that the pain would come back, that my boobs would completely deflate, that I would grow a mustache and manly hair all over, and the fact that I might have to go back on them and have to take them the rest of my life • Final thoughts? - I don't regret taking the pills, it did help me quit smoking, I do have a more feminine figure, maybe it helped with the pain and cystic acne long term, but all in all I wouldn't want to be on them again. DIANE-35 TABLET -This medication contains a combination of two ingredients: cyproterone and ethinyl estradiol. Cyproterone belongs to a group of medications known as antiandrogens. I quit the Depo shot 2 months ago. I have nausea, hot flashes and sore breasts. Why?
You mentioned that you stopped taking the Depo shot for contraception a couple of months ago, and you've had some unusual symptoms that have made you feel like you might be pregnant, and you've taken tests, they've been negative, you're wondering what might be going on, and if there's any chance that you could be pregnant. So the Depo shot is effective, on average, for 13 to 15 or 16 weeks, which makes the likelihood of you being pregnant very, very, very slim, since it's only been 2 months since your last injection. On average, it takes most women up to about 10 months to conceive a baby after their last Depo shot injection, because it takes several months for your body to return to a normal fertile state. So that, in and of itself, makes it very unlikely that you would be pregnant, because it's probably still effective right now, meaning that your body probably hasn't started ovulating yet. I do recommend talking with your doctor though, because nausea, tender breasts, and hot flashes can be due to lots of other medical conditions. And based on their ability to ask you more specific questions about your observations, and to take their knowledge of your health history into account, they'll be able to decide if further investigation is necessary in your situation. Good luck with everything, and if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

Signs You Are Pregnant While on Birth Control
What are the signs you are pregnant while on birth control? You hit that row of do nothing pills in the birth control pack and your period does not come. It could come late for other reasons like hormones out of whack. And it was concern that my hormones would be messed up that I did not use them. Then I cannot say that you got pregnant on the pill because you used antibiotics. Antibiotics can make you poop a lot, passing the pills through faster. If you were taking thyroid medication, it would metabolize them faster. However, if you get a stomach bug and throw them up, you could get pregnant. If I’m throwing up a lot, that’s a sign I am pregnant on birth control. If you are nauseous or throwing up in the morning but not in the afternoon or evening, then it is likely due to pregnancy. If it is all day, then you may need antibiotics or another medication. I have not been taking antibiotics. If you were on the pill, you’d be able to guess you were pregnant if you had a light period the next cycle and none the one after that. With a birth control implant, though, a woman would not have a period at all. Well, most of the time. You could develop breast tenderness in early pregnancy. I get that with my normal cycle. Peeing a lot is a sign of pregnancy. Or a urinary tract infection. If you used an injected contraceptive, your odds of pregnancy are really low barring medication that interferes with it. I do not use the injectables. What are the other signs I could be pregnant while on birth control? If you used an intrauterine, it causes heavier than normal periods. If you’re pregnant, the period stops. That’s usually normal regardless of the contraception method. You could be certain you did a pregnancy test and it came back positive. Don’t birth control methods interfere with that? If you used a condom, cervical cap or even an intrauterine, you’d have the normal hormonal cycles for ovulation and pregnancy. It is only the hormone based pills and shots that throw off your hormones. And it may be that my contraceptive method failed. If you were taking birth control pills, the estrogen or progesterone won’t throw off the pregnancy test. In fact, no medicine you take for anything would mess it up. So a pregnancy test is the best way to see if I’m pregnant. And it would be a sure sign to talk to your doctor about the best way to stop your birth control, since you clearly won’t need it for a while.

Can contraceptive injections affect chances of conception in future? - Dr. Shefali Tyagi
Contraceptive injections are another method of contraception in which the progesterone is given as injection and it works for either 8 or 12 week. The side effects of such injections can be that the periods can become irregular. Sometimes you even stop having your periods. There can be weight gain. There can be effect on your bone. That means the bone can become slightly weaker. There can be breast tenderness, mood swings. So these are the common side effects. Now if you can start conceiving after stopping the injections, the answer would be that if you are planning pregnancy, don’t go for those injections as periods can become very irregular. Sometimes the cycles get back to their normal regular rhythmic flow upto a year after stopping the injections. So if you are planning another baby, then probably the injectable contraceptives will not be the best choice for you. You can either go for Copper T or contraceptive pills because in that case, the fertility is not affected so much. So it might take a little while to become pregnant after stopping these injectable contraceptives.
7 Reasons Your Boobs Might Be Hurting
EDIT: Thanks for letting us know some weird stuff was going on in this video! We’ve uploaded a new version that isn’t making Cheyenne look wonky, which is why you might notice your comments are gone. 7 Reasons Your Boobs Are Hurting Sure, boobs are great – they’re fun to play with, they look good, and they feel cool – but let’s be real: there are a lot of annoying things about them. Like, sometimes they hurt for seemingly no reason at all. Sometimes you’re just sitting there, minding your own business, when BAM – a stabbing pain shoots through your boob, and you’re like, “OMG, could I have breast cancer?” (Let’s not get dramatic) The worst is when your breasts feel sore, heavier than normal, and just super achy. It’s like your body is punishing you! Birth Control Shot Side Effects | Birth Control
Watch more How to Pick a Birth Control Method videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/510814-Birth-Control-Shot-Side-Effects-Birth-Control The birth control shot is a highly effective form of birth control. It is progesterone only and is usually administered by a doctor or a nurse practitioner. The injection is usually given into your arm or in your buttock once every 12 weeks. While this is an excellent and highly effective form of birth control, it does have some side effects. Some of the most common side effects include breakthrough bleeding, headaches, and over a relatively short period of time, you may stop getting your periods altogether. These side effects are completely normal. Now, the headaches and the breakthrough bleeding will usually get better with time. However, if you stop getting your periods with this birth control option, it's possible that your periods may not return until after you stop using this form of contraception. Please don't be worried. While patients are concerned when they don't see their periods, so long as they're using the birth control option correctly, this is perfectly safe. One of the concerns about using the birth control injection, or the birth control shot, is the return to fertility. In other words, if you use this birth control option and you decide that you want to get pregnant, it can take up to a year for your periods to return and for you to start ovulating in order for you to get pregnant. So if you're thinking in the next year or two that you would like to consider pregnancy, you probably should consider a different, more easily reversible form of birth control. Another concern about this form of birth control is the risk associated with bone loss. Now, the risk of bone loss is relatively low over the first year. But if you continue this form of birth control for two or more years, you may want to consider changing your options in order to reduce this risk from occurring. Again, I highly recommend that you talk to your nurse practitioner or your physician about whether this is a good birth control option for you. Despite the side effects, this may be the birth control option for you. And while you're concerned about the side effect profile, it's probably better to use this than to use nothing at all.

The Birth Control PIll - How It Works, Benefits, Side Effects
Learn all about the pill and why you might want to consider this birth control option. Get more information at http://ppmns.org or by calling 1.800.230.PLAN. Transcript: Birth control pills are a really common method of birth control. When people think about birth control, they often first think about the pill. There are two different types—there's a kind that has both hormones progesterone and estrogen in it, and that's most commonly what people think of as the pill. And then there's a kind that just has progesterone in it—different women choose that pill for different reasons. Both of them are very effective. Less than 1 out of 100 women will get pregnant every year taking the pill. It just does have to be taken every day at around the same time. Most women don't notice any real difference when they start the pill other than the shorter, lighter periods. Some women do experience some stomach upset or nausea when they first start it. Some women will experience irregular bleeding for the first month or two on the pill. Some women get some breast tenderness or kind of feel like they're getting their period when they first start on the pill. Usually by the first three months of being on the pill, everything is normal. The estrogens in the pills are the same, but the progesterones are all different and they can have different effects for people. Whether you have insurance or are concerned about the cost of care, you can see if you're eligible for any of the programs that help pay for birth control and preventative care visits at our website at ppmns.org.

Long Term Side Effects Of Birth Control Pills | Birth Control Pills Side Effects
Long Term Side Effects Of Birth Control Pills | Birth Control Pills Side Effects Subscribe To Get New Videos Daily: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi1zZ8_Q7yqKInXImLCLfXw Hormonal birth control has been available to American women since the early 1960s with the introduction of "the pill." Since then, birth control via hormones can also be accomplished with injections, patches, implants and rings, although pills remain the most popular method and the most studied. All hormonal methods are meant to maintain high levels of estrogen and progesterone, which prevent women from ovulating. Controversy exists over what side effects occur with long-term use of birth control pills. Sexual Side Effects: Although women usually take birth control pills to enhance their sexual experience, there is evidence that with long-term use, it may actually make it less enjoyable for many. In 2006, a study was published in the "Journal of Sexual Medicine" that concluded long-term use of birth control pills can lead to sexual dysfunction. Specifically, the researches commonly found decreased sexual desire, sexual arousal and vaginal secretions or lubrication in the 124 women on birth control pills who were studied. The women also reported reduced sexual satisfaction and an increase in sex-related pain because of the reduced lubrication. The same research team also took blood samples from the women and realized they had elevated globulin levels, which was chronically suppressing their testosterone levels. The researchers concluded that the synthetic estrogens in birth control pills may cause permanent changes in the way genes function, resulting in a long-lasting reduction in testosterone available to the body. Cancers: It is known that some cancers need sex hormones to thrive, which is why an increased risk of breast cancer has been linked to elevated estrogen levels in women. The National Cancer Institute states that some studies have shown an increased risk of breast cancer in women taking oral contraceptives, while other studies have shown no change in risk. Generally, women older than 45 years of age who have been taking birth control pills for most of their adult lives have the highest risk of breast cancer for two reasons: long-term consecutive use of the oral contraceptive and use of earlier versions that had higher levels of sex hormones. The National Cancer Institute also notes that oral contraceptive use has been shown to increase the risk of cervical cancer and liver cancer. On the other hand, multiple studies indicate a potential decrease in risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers for women on oral contraceptives. Other Long-Term Side Effects: Other long-term side effects from oral contraceptive use include an increased risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke, weight gain, hypertension and migraine headaches. These effects seem to be increased by cigarette smoking. Long-term use of synthetic hormones has also been linked to nutritional deficiencies, such as low levels of vitamins B2, B6 and B12, depression and increased feelings of anxiety, according to "Hormone Replacement Therapy and The Brain." https://www.livestrong.com/article/17404-stop-nausea-caused-birth-control/ Music Source: www.bensound.com Health Disclaimer: The information on this channel is only for educational purposes. How to Prevent Nausea from Birth Control Pills
How to Prevent Nausea from Birth Control Pills Nausea and birth control pills Since the introduction of the first birth control pill in 1960, women have come to rely on the pill as an effective way to prevent pregnancy. More than 25 percent of women who use birth control today are on the pill. The birth control pill is more than 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy when it’s taken correctly. Like any drug, it can cause side effects. Nausea is one of the most commonly reported side effects of birth control pills. Why does the pill cause nausea? The queasiness is the result of estrogen, which can irritate the stomach. Pills that contain a high dose of estrogen, especially emergency contraceptive pills, are more likely to cause stomach upset than pills that have a lower dose of this hormone. Nausea is more common when you first start taking the pill. How to treat nausea when you’re on the pill There is no specific treatment for nausea caused by the pill. However, you may find relief from mild bouts of nausea with these home remedies: Consume only light, plain foods, such as bread and crackers. Avoid any foods that have strong flavors, are very sweet, or are greasy or fried. Drink cold liquids. Avoid any activity after eating. Drink a cup of ginger tea. Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Take a series of deep, controlled breaths. Applying pressure to certain points on the wrist has also been found to relieve mild nausea. This traditional Chinese remedy is called acupressure. Nausea caused by the pill should resolve within a few days. If the nausea persists, make an appointment to see your doctor. Nausea that doesn’t let up can have an effect on your appetite and weight. You may need to switch to another type of pill or a different form of birth control. How to prevent nausea when you’re on the pill To prevent nausea, don’t take your birth control pill on an empty stomach. Instead, take it after dinner or with a snack before bed. You can also take an antacid medicine about 30 minutes before taking the pill. This may help keep your stomach calm. Before using the emergency birth control pill, speak with your doctor to see if an anti-nausea medication can also be used. They may give you a prescription for an anti-nausea medicine, especially if this pill has made you feel sick in the past. Progestin-only emergency pills are less likely to cause nausea and vomiting than pills containing both estrogen and progestin. Don’t stop taking the birth control pill just because you have nausea. You could get pregnant if you aren’t using another birth control method as a backup. How do birth control pills work? Birth control pills contain man-made forms of the female hormones estrogen and progestin or progestin only. These hormones prevent pregnancy by stopping the release of a mature egg from a woman’s ovaries (ovulation). Birth control pills also thicken mucus around the cervix. This makes it harder for the sperm to swim to the egg and fertilize it. The pill also changes the lining of the uterus. If an egg is fertilized, the altered uterine lining will make it more difficult for the egg to implant and grow. Emergency contraceptive pills such as Plan B contain a higher dose of the hormones found in the regular pill. This high dose of hormones can be hard on your body. Therefore, you should only take emergency contraceptives if you didn’t use contraception during sex or you experienced birth control failure. Examples of birth control failure are a condom that broke or an intrauterine device (IUD) that fell out during sex. Emergency contraceptives can stop ovulation and prevent an egg from leaving the ovary. These pills can also prevent sperm from fertilizing the egg. Other side effects of the birth control pill In addition to nausea, the most common side effects caused by the pill include: breast soreness, tenderness, or enlargement headaches moodiness reduced sex drive spotting in between periods, or irregular periods weight gain or loss Most of these side effects are mild. They usually go away within a few months after you start taking the pill. One rare but serious side effect of birth control use is a blood clot in the leg (deep vein thrombosis), which if untreated can lead to a blood clot in your lungs (pulmonary embolism) and possibly death. This risk is rare. However, your risk is increased if you have used the pill for a long time, you smoke, or you are older 35 years. Choosing a birth control pill that’s right for you When choosing a birth control pill, you need to strike a balance. You want enough estrogen to prevent pregnancy but not so much that it makes you sick to your stomach. Your doctor can help you find a birth control pill that suits your needs. While you’re taking the pill, follow the directions carefully. Take your pill every day. If you skip a dose, you’ll need to take the missed dose as soon as possible.

Diane 35 pills are classified as oral contraceptives. This is a daily hormone intake that makes the body think that ovulation has begun. This ensures that eggs in the ovaries do not mature preventing them from being released each month. Today, however, low-dosage pills with few adverse health effects are the norm. That said, the potential for serious side effects exists any time hormonal therapy is used to manipulate the reproductive system. Birth Control Pill Side Effects. In clinical trials, common birth control pill side effects included: acne - although in certain cases, birth control pills can help reduce acne as well nausea vomiting tenderness or enlarging of the breasts bloating severe headaches decrease in sex drive Interestingly enough, weight gain was found not to be a common side effect of birth control pills despite widespread belief to the contrary. Other side effects, while occurring very infrequently, are potentially quite serious and should be monitored for. They include: depression migraine headaches lumps on the breasts heavy bleeding high blood pressure (hypertension) high cholesterol blood clots chest pains liver damage allergic reactions Birth Control Pill Side Effects. Many of these more severe side effects are mainly the result of your body's inability to cope with the estrogen hormone. If that is the case, switching to a progestin-only pill, also known as the "mini-pill," could be a solution. Progestin-only pills, if used properly, tend to be every bit as effective as combined estrogen/progestin pills. If you experience any of the above serious symptoms or think you may be prone to them, consult your doctor before taking any sort of hormonal birth control. In the meantime, you can use non-hormonal barrier options such as condoms combined with a diaphragm and spermicidal lotion. While perhaps not quite as effective as hormone-based oral contraceptives, barrier forms such as condoms have the positive advantage of also protecting against sexually transmitted diseases. Finally, there may be times when a certain birth control method just "doesn't feel right." If that is the case, be sure to consult your doctor. While it may not be a medical side-effect, per say, there may be some other related problem your doctor can help diagnose and treat. Acne Treatment with Birth Control Pills and Antiandrogens
Antiandrogen treatment of acne Antiandrogen treatment may be considered for adult women. Those who fail systemic antibiotics, relapse after a course of isotretinoin or for women who have symptoms of hyperandrogenism are likely to benefit. Symptoms of hyperandrogenism include irregular menses, infrequent or light menses, mild hirsutism, oily skin and androgenetic alopecia. Women with premenstrual flares, adult onset acne, acne worsening as an adult and acne on the mandibular line and neck may also benefit. Women with ovarian cysts and hirsutism may also benefit. Patient selection Failure of oral antibiotic Recurrences after isotretinoin Irregular menses Light menses Mild hirsutism Increased oiliness Androgenetic alopecia Treatment There are two approaches. Combination oral contraceptives ( COC) reduce circulating androgens. Spironolactone is an peripheral androgen receptor blockers. The two drugs are frequently combined to achieve optimal results. Oral contraceptives All COCs can be effective for mild to moderate acne. They are often ineffective for more severe cases. COC suppress pituitary gonadotropins. This results in ovarian hormone suppression. They also raise circulating sex hormone binding globulin which decreases circulating free testosterone. All of today’s low-dose COC s are estrogen dominant and are beneficial in women with acne regardless of which formula is used. Use COC containing the lowest dose of each hormone that limits the early-cycle side effects of nausea/vomiting, breast tenderness, weight gain and headache. Several months of treatment are required. Concomitant intake of a COC and an antibiotic prescribed for acne does not impair the efficacy of the COC. Products Ortho-TriCyclin Estro-Step Alesse Yasmin Ortho-TriCyclin and Estro-Step are approved for treating acne. Estrostep is formulated so that the ethinyl estradiol dose rises as pills are used during a cycle. It may be better tolerated than higher dose estrogen formulations. Alesse is the lowest dose estrogen formulation. It may be better tolerated in women with bloating or nausea on higher dose formulations. Yasmin is an oral contraceptive (OC) with a new progestin called drospirenone. Drospirenone has an antimineralocorticoid and antiandrogenic effect similar to that of spironolactone and can cause potassium retention. Whether this antimineralocorticoid effect leads to less weight gain than with other OCs is still unclear. The effect of Yasmin on acne appears to be similar to that of other OCs. Information to date does not support any increase in the risk of venous thromboembolism with use of the drospirenone-containing OC as compared with any other combination OC. Spironolactone Spironolactone is the androgen receptor blocker used in the United States. Active metabolites have a half-life of 14 to 16 hours. Improvement in acne is variable. Spironolactone Start 50 mg qAM ?2 to 4 weeks 50 mg bid Maximum dose 200 mg/d Monitor blood pressure Monitoring K not necessary Spironolactone 50 mg once each day is prescribed for 2 to 4 weeks and increased to 100 mg/d as tolerated. Doses as high as 200 mg/d are sometimes necessary. The medication may be given as a single morning dose. Higher doses are divided and given twice each day. Lower the dose after several months of treatment if the patient is clear. Spironolactone is safe to use for months or years. The simultaneous use of oral contraceptives may be helpful. Spironolactone is often beneficial when used as monotherapy without oral antibiotics. Check blood pressure at each visit. Monitoring potassium levels in healthy young women is not necessary. Side effects Menstrual irregularities Breast tenderness Fatigue Headache Side effects increase with higher doses but the drug is generally well tolerated. Side effects are menstrual irregularities, breast tenderness, fatigue, and headache.
What are the side effects of coming off of the Depo shot?
You mentioned that you and your husband are trying to have a baby, and you were using the Depo shot for contraception, but got your last injection a few months ago, and you're wondering what types of side effects you can expect while coming off of this medication. While on the Depo shot, it's normal to have irregular bleeding patterns, and the longer you're on it, actually, the more likely it is that you won't have periods. And this is likely to continue for the next few months until your hormone levels get back to a fertile state. On average, it takes women about 10 months to conceive, because it can take your body several months before it gets back to this fertile state where your hormone levels are such that you're ovulating. So if you don't have periods for a few months, then that's normal. And you might start to experience a little bit of irregular bleeding, and then hopefully soon you'll start to notice established, regular periods. And then once that happens, you can calculate your fertile window, and time intercourse with ovulation, and increase your chances of conceiving and having a baby. Good luck with everything, and if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

What is emergency contraception?
A lot of people have questions about emergency contraception, like “What is it?” and “How effective is it?” and also “What are the side effects commonly associated with its use?” Emergency contraception is used after a couple has had unprotected intercourse and some times when its use may be appropriate include if a condom breaks or if a cervical diaphragm moves out of place or maybe a girl is forced to have unprotected sex. Those are all perfectly legitimate times when this may help prevent pregnancy. Emergency contraceptive pills are also known as the “Morning After” pill and the name’s a little deceiving because you don’t need to wait until the morning after. In fact, they’re most effective if they’re taken as soon as possible after the couple has intercourse. For sure, they need to be taken within 5 days afterward to be effective at all. What they have in them are high levels of estrogen and progesterone and this stops ovulation from happening or may delay it a little bit so that pregnancy won’t happen. Now, it’s not perfectly effective, just like all forms of birth control. About one to two out of every 100 women who takes emergency contraception will still end up getting pregnant. And if it’s taken after fertilization has already happened, it’s not going to stop the pregnancy from progressing. High levels of estrogen and progesterone can cause the woman to have side effects associated with its use. The woman may experience nausea and vomiting and breast tenderness and headaches after taking the pill and these things are also commonly associated with pregnancy, so a lot of women who take them think that they got pregnant. But the first sign of pregnancy is a missed period, so if you’re suspicious of pregnancy at all, the best thing to do is to just wait and see if your next period starts as usual. But a side effect of emergency contraception can also be delayed onset of a woman’s period, so basically if it doesn’t start as you expect it to, then take a home pregnancy test to either rule out or confirm that as the cause, wait a week or two, and see if your period starts. And if it hasn’t, then re-test. If it continues to be delayed, it could be due to the use of the emergency contraceptive pill, but call your doctor if you have any questions about it, especially if you go three months or more without a period or you have other unusual bleeding patterns that are concerning to you. If you have any other questions in the future for me, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at facebook.com/IntermountainMoms and recommend us to your friends and family too.

Copper T, an intra intrauterine device helps in suppressing the ovaries' monthly release of an egg cell while the birth control pills mostly thicken cervical mucus, inhibiting the sperm movement. Pregnancy can still take place if the Copper T gets misplaced inside the uterine cavity. Although quite effective, oral contraceptives may not always be perfectly effective at preventing pregnancy. The birth control shot is an injection that is usually done in your arm or in your buttock, and it contains progesterone only. This form of birth control needs to be given once every 12 weeks, and is an excellent form of birth control for patients who are not good at taking a pill every day, for patients who cannot use estrogen, patients who have migraines with aura. If you smoke, you may want to consider using Depo-Provera as a form of birth control until you quit, and you should quit smoking. It is not a good idea to use estrogen and progesterone birth control when you smoke. If you have a history of blood clot formation, whether during pregnancy, spontaneous blood clot formation, or with the use of oral combined birth control pills that have estrogen and progesterone, this may be a better birth control option for you.

Networks Say Don't 'Stop' Birth Control After New Link To Breast Cancer
Network health experts reported on a finding that contraception was associated with a 20% increased risk of breast cancer – by reassuring women that they needn’t stop their birth control. On Wednesday night, a study out of Denmark broke headlines for finding that the “risk of breast cancer was higher among women who currently or recently used contemporary hormonal contraceptives” than women who had never used them. On Tuesday, the study aired on the three broadcast networks – ABC, CBS, NBC – during their morning news shows. Published in The New England Journal of Medicine, the study followed 1.8 million women between the ages of 15 and 49 for more than 10 years. The study found a 20% “increased risk of breast cancer” with current and recent use of contraceptives, according to the Associated Press/USA TODAY. That number increased to 38% for women taking such contraception for more than 10 years. To put that in perspective, roughly 140 million women use hormonal contraceptives, with 16 million in the U.S. The research included varying types of contraceptives and birth control pills. AP reported: “Researchers found a similar breast cancer risk with the progestin-only intrauterine device, and they couldn’t rule out a risk for other hormonal contraceptives like the patch and the implant. Digging further, the researchers found no differences among types of birth control pills. Because of fewer users, the results for the patch, vaginal ring, implant and progestin shot were less clear, but the analysis didn’t rule out an increased breast cancer risk for those methods.” -- For the first (and worst) report, NBC anchor Hoda Kotb covered the study that “explores the link between certain kinds of birth control and breast cancer” on Today. On air, Kotb called it “very significant” and health expert Dr. Jessica Shepherd agreed it was “jarring.” The problem came when Dr. Shepherd mentioned only “oral contraceptive use” in regards to the study. When Kotb asked for her “ultimate takeaway for a woman watching right now who’s a little scared,” Dr. Shepherd recommended women turn to other forms. Her advice, she stressed was “to not stop taking their birth control,” and “also look at alternatives,” including the IUD, implants and Depo-Provera. Unlike NBC, both ABC and CBS reported that the study did include other forms of contraception, like IUDs. But like NBC, they both recommended women continue with birth control. For ABC, anchor Robin Roberts brought up the “health alert” that “women who use the pill may face a higher risk” for breast cancer during Good Morning America. She later emphasized to chief medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton that women “are going to be very, very concerned about this.” In response, Dr. Ashton reminded Robin to “remember the benefits,” beginning with “preventing pregnancy.” She ironically added, “we can’t throw out the baby with the bathwater.” [!] While Dr. Ashton found the study “significant,” she said she was “not going to recommend” to her 18-year-old daughter that she stop using the pill. During This Morning, CBS anchor Gayle King introduced the “new study” on a “link between newer forms of hormonal birth control and the risk of breast cancer” that posed a “small but meaningful increase in risk.” When co-anchor Norah O’Donnell worried, “should women stop taking birth control?” CBS contributor Dr. David Agus responded with a no. “With any drug or with anything you take there’s a risk and there’s a benefit,” he said, like lowering other types of cancer. But he recommended talking to doctor for women over 35-years-old. I still got pregnant after taking an emergency contraception pill. Why didn't it work?
You mentioned that you got pregnant even after taking an emergency contraception pill, and wanted to know what are the chances, and why didn't it work for you. And so, to start with, I think the most important thing to understand is that emergency contraception is definitely not 100% effective. Studies have shown that 2 out of every 100 women who take emergency contraception pills (even within the recommended timeframe) still end up getting pregnant. And so it's definitely not 100%. And it's different from all other forms of contraception in the sense that it's taken after intercourse. It's not something that you take before or think about prior to. Emergency contraception pills are a combination of hormones and medications that interrupt the process of ovulation, in other words, the release of an egg that can then be fertilized by sperm. And there are different types of emergency contraception. Some are made to even interrupt the process of implantation, so if ovulation and fertilization has already happened, then the medication makes it less likely that it will implant and that the pregnancy will continue. There are also side effects associated with these pills, and the symptoms are actually associated with pregnancy as well, so it leaves a lot of women wondering if they're pregnant. It can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, headaches, breast tenderness, and abdominal pain. It can also disrupt a woman's cycle and make her irregular even though she wasn't pregnant. Keep in mind that emergency contraception should be used as a backup method of contraception only. If you're going to be sexually active on a regular basis, it's best to talk with your doctor and use a reliable form of contraception. And there's lots of different options out there. Your doctor can help you decide which one will be best for you. If you're using condoms, and you just started a certain type of birth control, and you're worried that you may have conceived (if the condom broke or something), then that's when emergency contraception should be used, but it shouldn't be your go-to form of contraception. So basically, if you think you may have conceived because there's a possibility that you had unprotected intercourse, even if you took an emergency contraception pill, you should take a home pregnancy test if the day comes when your period should have started and it didn't. That's the actual first sign of pregnancy. And if it's negative, repeat the test in about a week or so if you haven't started a regular period, and if you continue to get negative results, then you know you're not pregnant and you're probably having irregular cycles related to taking the emergency contraception pill. But if you go 3 months without a cycle, or you're having irregular bleeding or other symptoms that are unusual to you, talk with your doctor, and they can ask you more specific questions and decide if further investigation is warranted. If you have more questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

What are birth control pills? - Dr. Shefali Tyagi
