(The DRIs for these two groups are 90 milligrams and 75 milligrams, respectively.) So even though U.S. adults are averaging adequate intake of vitamin C intake from their food, the amount is not as high as some people might expect given widespread familiarity and interest in vitamin C. Of the World's Healthiest Foods, a staggering 27 rate as excellent sources of vitamin C. Six of these contain a full day's requirement of vitamin C in a single serving. It was recently threatened to be sued over false claims about Centrum vitamins in 2012 by the consumer watchdog group Center for Science in the Public Interest. Eventually, the company had to pull claims about breast and colon health. Moreover, it lacks regulation, specificity, and even standards. Namely, the multivitamins ask for no set standards or levels. Yet, it does what all big corporations regularly do: it pays large sums of money for advertising their chemically and synthetically enhanced supplements which can, in fact, do more harm than good. Shortly after completing that article, I received my next writing assignment: outfit my pantry with an arsenal of the latest trendy hangover cures - from Oriental raisin extract hovenia dulcis to prickly pear concentrated extract to self-administered Myer's cocktail IV's - then engage in extreme alcohol hedonism and see what happens (you can read the surprising results here). So, after all this brutality, I've decided to kick off 2018 by pushing the reboot button and cleaning up my entire system with a giant, scientifically proven detoxification mop, and I'm inviting you to join me. In this article, you'll learn why detoxification is not a myth, exactly why you should seriously consider detoxing (even if you live an ultra-clean lifestyle and don't necessarily treat your body as an N=1 guinea pig like I do), and how I'm personally going to detox using a relatively unique approach. Is Detoxification A Myth? A few years ago, The Guardian released an article entitled: You can’t detox your body. It’s a myth. So how do you get healthy? In the article, the author says that: “...detoxing — the idea that you can flush your system of impurities and leave your organs squeaky clean and raring to go — is a scam. It’s a pseudo-medical concept designed to sell you things.” So is this true? Can you really not detox your body? As you go into the New Year, during which detox diets and claims are sure to surround you, it’s important to know the truth about detoxing. It’s important to begin with an understanding of what toxins actually are. No matter how “clean” you live your life, just about everybody shows some evidence of a buildup of toxins. When the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted the Fourth National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals, they found some pretty shocking results. On average, the CDC’s report found 212 chemicals in people’s blood or urine, 75 of which had never before been measured in the U.S. population. The chemicals included: Acrylamide (formed when foods are baked or fried at high temperatures, and as a byproduct of cigarette smoke) Arsenic, found in many home-building products Environmental phenols, including bisphenol A (found in plastics, food packaging and epoxy resins) and triclosan (used as an antibacterial agent in personal care products such as toothpaste and hand soap) Perchlorate, used in airplane fuel, explosives and fireworks Perfluorinated chemicals, used to create non-stick cookware Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, used in fire retardants found in consumer products such as mattresses Volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), found in paints, air fresheners, cleaning products, cosmetics, upholstery fabrics, carpets, dry-cleaned clothing, wood preservatives, and paint strippers When you put all these together, these chemicals can potentially present a toxic burden to the human body, and (as the CDC has found) can accumulate in your body’s blood, urine and tissue — possibly one reason why the plastic-based versions of these chemicals are sometimes referred to as “obesogens,” due to the suggestion that they may somehow accumulate in fat tissue. While your body does actually have detoxification organs (your liver and kidney) that can process many of these chemicals and toxins, they can potentially cause medical problems if your liver and kidneys are not functioning properly or are overburdened with a poor diet. While the kidneys are indeed important for acting as a filtration mechanism for your blood and removing wastes and excess water from the body, it’s the liver that has an incredibly important job when it comes to detoxification. Along with filtering your blood to remove toxins, your liver uses a two-phase process to break down chemicals and toxins. During phase 1, toxins are neutralized and broken into smaller fragments. Then, in phase 2 they are bound to other molecules, creating a new non-toxic molecule that can be excreted in your bile, urine or stool. But order for this liver detoxification to work properly, your body must have adequate nutrients. Now this is controversial and hard, but as for the research and as for what we have from the American Academy, there is no direct correlation of vaccines causing autism. However, concern that I do respect when a parent comes and tells me my child had, for example, the MMR vaccine or had a particular vaccine at 18 months, and seem to have developed symptoms after that. Well, typically autism regression also happens around 18 to 24 months, that's when we do see that. Is there something that we need to be researching more? Absolutely. We do know that kids have immune dysfunction or immune issues. You do not want to vaccinate a child when they are sick with a cold. The only case where a vaccination caused symptoms in a child who developed autism kind of symptoms was when a child had a mitochondrial disorder. Now we do know children with autism have mitochondrial dysfunction, but there is not a correlation of vaccination causing autism per se. I do think vaccination is very important for children. We don't want outbreaks taking place of measles and polio, etc., etc., because vaccinations are protective. One of the concerns, however, that was in the past was regarding mercury as a preservative in vaccines, which has now been removed. I think the number of vaccinations that were being given and the total level of mercury added on became to a toxic level. Mercury has been removed from vaccines. We now have aluminum. The other concern that parents have, particularly when they have a child with autism, is they may want to use a vaccine that is preservative free. But there is not enough data on that. I think it is reasonable for physicians to work with parents for their anxieties. Give them the information, and yet work with families because you're dealing with parents who are really very so much impacted by what's happening with their child, and we need to do a lot more research, even though we do not have direct cause and effect information, and there really is no direct data on this. However, lots more research needs to be done. And even with a child who has a neurologic impairment, we do alter the vaccine schedule as we do with a child who has fever. One of the things I would recommend though, and that's my personal recommendation, is when you do vaccinate a child, do not use Tylenol for the fever. Use an anti-inflammatory because Tylenol is harder on the liver. And if a child has mitochondrial issues, for example, or low glutathione, which is the antioxidant that you need to process toxins and preservatives, etc., let's support the liver. A lot of parents do that by giving their kids vitamin C as an antioxidant, or making sure that they are well, and I think that's very important.
