PPO Vs. HMO: What's the Difference and Which is Better?
Next Step: Take the PPO Vs. HMO test for yourself - http://www.giangolainsurance.com/health-insurance-after-obamacare-ohio What Does PPO Mean? PPO stands for Prefered Provider Organization. This type of plan offers a higher level of reimbursements when you receive treatment from a “preferred” doctor or hospital. In less fancy insurance terms, you pay less. This is also known as your health insurance company’s network. These “preferred” providers offer their services to you at a cheaper rate if they’re in your insurance company’s network. You even have the ability to see non “prefered” doctors with this plan, they are just consider out-of-network doctors. PPO’s have dominated the health insurance landscape for the last 10-15 years. What Does HMO Mean? HMO stands for Health Maintenance Organization. This plan type works a little different from a PPO. Instead of being able to choose from a list of doctors at a wide array of facilities, you are strictly limited to doctors and facilities contracted with that health insurance company. The goal of this plan structure is to have a primary physician manage your care. The most famous example of an HMO structure is the company HealthSpan, formerly known as Kaiser Permanente. These plans generally are less expensive than a PPO plan, however that is in exchange for a limited selection of doctors and hospitals. Let’s Take a Closer Look So I’ll ask you again, how many doctors do you want to be able to see if something really bad happens? The answer to that question is the answer to your internal PPO vs. HMO debate. But if you want to go even deeper, here’s what you need to think about. When does a HMO plan Make Sense? This is a hard question to answer since it will always come down to personal preference. But, this is how I like to explain it to clients. If there is a HMO plan that has doctors close to your home that you like and trust and also has an adequate number of hospital facilities, that’s a decent first step. You also need to be able to save a considerable amount of money on your health insurance payment every month. Finding both of those together is the tricky part. I have yet to see a HMO plan that offers enough savings to consider recommending one to a client. When you only save a couple dollars every month, you have to ask yourself if it is really worth it to limit yourself that severely when it matters the most. I've never been able to answer yes to that question for a client.

Differences between Medicare PPO & HMO Plans
HMOs generally costs less but you give up flexibility to go out of your network. As Medicare Advantage plans continue to evolve, know how these two network plans differ. HMO is neither better nor worse than a PPO, it is just different. You typically pay a lot less for a HMO but have a smaller network (not always) and no ability to go OUT of network. If all your doctors are in network, this may not be an issue for you. If you TRAVEL out of your area (your kids live out of state, you have a vacation home in the south or you like to travel a lot) then a HMO is not a good option since you are risking out of network costs! Keep in mind that many of the top carriers have a program for both PPO and HMO plans so you can "switch" your home network to another state when you travel--or if you need to go to a specialist that is out of network. This type of program varies a lot by the insurance company and they all call their program by a different name, but this is a great option to discuss with your agent when choosing a plan. HMO vs. PPO - What You Need to Know
In looking at health insurance options, it's important to know what the various terminologies mean. So, let's start with a couple of the most important, HMO and PPO. HMO is Health Maintenance Organization. PPO is Preferred Provider Organization. For health insurance, the difference between the two is stark. An HMO will have lower premiums but much more restrictions on care. Whereas a PPO will have higher premiums and lots more flexibility. You really need to know the difference and how it will apply to you. Defined Contribution Insurance O'Fallon-HMO Health Plans Eureka
Defined Contribution Insurance O'Fallon, visit http://www.freequoteplease.com/ for more information For 20 years, Wilson & Co Insurance has been helping people find the right insurance coverage - and get the most for their health-care dollars. The Different Types Of Health Insurance Plans When you're shopping for your own health coverage, you don't have to settle for whatever your employer thinks is best. You get the advantage of choosing the right plan for you. And you have plenty of options. Types Of Health Policies There are several kinds of policies for you to choose from. Here are a few of the most popular. Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans are a popular choice for people who value flexibility. A form of managed care, PPOs give you the most savings when you get care from a doctor, hospital or other provider within the plan's "network". But even if you do choose to receive care from outside the network, your PPO still provides some coverage. Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plans are also a type of managed care, and offer you even greater savings. The tradeoff is your choices are more restricted. To get coverage from your HMO policy, you must choose a "Primary Care Physician", and you must always get care from approved "in-network" providers. For most people, this is a small drawback compared to the affordability of HMOs - which often feature no deductible. Point Of Service (POS) Plans combine managed care with traditional health coverage. Just like an HMO, you select a Primary Care Physician to see for routine care. But when you need to see a specialist - or get a second opinion - you're free to see any doctor you choose. Fee For Service (FFS) Plans aren't as popular as they once were. These plans are modeled after traditional "indemnity" insurance. In an FFS plan you pay for your care up front, and are reimbursed by your insurance company after you file a claim. Not sure which choice is best for you? Let us help. We'll answer your questions and point you toward the right plan for you. Start comparing plans now with our free online quotes. What are the differences between a Medicare HMO and a Medicare PPO? Get the facts and learn why the benefits of each type of plan. If you would like to learn more about your Medicare plan options get my 8 Part Video Mini-Course. It's absolutely free! Get instant access: http://free-mini-course.com A Medicare HMO and a Medicare PPO are both Medicare Advantage Plans that utilize a provider network. Both require that you choose a primary care provider, but that's where the similarities end. With a Medicare HMO you will be required to seek referrals from your primary care provider. You also must stay within the plan's network except in the case of an emergency. The benefit of choosing a Medicare HMO is that you will often have lower out-of-pocket costs over other network-based plans. With a Medicare PPO you are not required to get referrals to visit other providers. You can also go out-of-network to receive covered services. Going out-of-network when enrolled in a Medicare PPO will often require higher out-of-pocket costs. The main benefit of this preferred provider arrangement is that you can have lower costs while using network providers, yet have the flexibility to go out-of-network if you desire. The type of network is only one consideration of enrolling in a Medicare Advantage Plan. Review the plan's Summary of Benefits and Part D formulary as well to be certain you are choosing a suitable plan.

13 Difference Between Aetna And United healthcare
1. Aetna: 1.5 million providers worldwide including 664,301 primary care doctors and specialists. United Health Care: 1 million physicians and specialists, 6,000 hospitals and clinics in the United States. 2.  United Healthcare does have the advantage in some states for individual health insurance coverage because the UHC lineup of Health Savings Accounts (HSA’s) are very strong and while Aetna does offer HSA plans they are usually not quite as good as the UHC HSA plans. 3.  Aetna has been very easy, no issues to report. 4. They are both A+ rated companies, so you can't really go wrong with either.  5. Aetna: 15.8 million policyholders United Healthcare Group: 18 million policyholders 6. Medicare Advantage Availability: Aetna: 39 states and DC United Healthcare Group: Nationwide 7. Network Size: UHC does have the slight edge. 8. Aetna: Specific plans vary widely from state to state. United Healthcare: Specific plans still vary slightly from state to state. 9. United Healthcare: Largest number of Advantage enrollments. Aetna: Over 50 years of Medicare experience. 10. Aetna: Wide range of HMO and PPO plans, dependent upon your state United Healthcare: Similar range of HMO and PPO plans 11. Medicare Supplement Availability: Aetna: 44 states United Healthcare: Nationwide 12. Aetna: World-class employer-based health plans used by businesses across the country United Healthcare: Emphasis on individual-based health plans, though they also offer employer-based policies 13.  Hospital workers and administrators much prefer working with Aetna over working with United Healthcare.

HMOs, PPOs and HDHPs
Medical plans differ in how much you pay out of your paycheck versus how much you pay at the doctor and how much freedom you have in choosing a doctor. Different types of medical plans vary in their monthly costs as well as their requirements for choosing specific doctors. An HMO, or Health Maintenance Organization, has a lower monthly premiums, but also provides a limited amount of doctors to choose from. You must designate a Primary Care Physician and receive a referral to see any other doctors or specialists. A PPO, or Preferred Provider Organization, has a higher monthly premium, but allows you greater freedom to choose your medical care provider. PPOs don’t require a primary care physician, so you can go directly to a specialist. An HDHP, or High Deductible Health Plan, offers the least expensive monthly premium, but requires you to pay all medical expenses up to a certain deductible amount. Like a PPO, HDHPs do not require a primary care physician. HDHPs are often attached to a Health Savings Account that allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars for out-of-pocket health expenses, which helps to cover the cost of a high deductible.

HMO vs. PPO - What's the Difference?
You've heard the terms HMO and PPO before - but, do you really know the difference between the two? John Dudek from Venture Pacific Insurance Services clears up the confusion. Learn more @ http://vpisrisk.com/ What is the difference between an HMO and a PPO? This is one of the most common questions I receive from my clients when they're looking at medical insurance. With an HMO an employer is required to pick a primary care physician when they're selecting their plan. This primary care physician becomes their ‘gatekeeper’ for any medical care moving forward. If they want to see a specialist, they first see their primary care physician, and their PCP will refer them to a specialist within their doctor network. With an HMO, employees are limited to services within their doctor group and their area. If they travel outside their city or they go outside of their state, they're only covered for emergency situations. PPOs are going to offer a lot more freedom for the employees when looking for doctors. You do not need to select a doctor ahead of time, and you can see any doctor you want within the PPO network. Almost all carriers will have a national PPO network along with a local network, which means you can travel outside of the state and still receive care just like you would at home, as long as you see a doctor that's in the PPO network. The advantages of an HMO over a PPO are, typically that they're going to be less expensive when you pay your premiums, and they're going to have lower out-of-pocket costs when you see the doctor; the disadvantages are less freedom when choosing a doctor. On the flip side, the advantages of a PPO are tons of freedom when you're looking for your doctor. The downside is going to be the PPO premiums are going to be more expensive and that PPOs have higher co-pays and higher deductibles than most HMO plans. As an employer, it's always a tough choice to decide whether to offer an HMO or a PPO, but a lot of factors are in play; including your employee demographics, and your budget for benefits. That's where we come in as your broker and help walk you through the decision-making process.

Consumers Struggle to Grasp PPO, HMO & HSA Under Obamacare – Right on the Money – Part 2 of 5
Sub Headline: Understanding Your Plan Choice to Make Smarter Health Plan Decisions Synopsis: The health insurance industry is chock full of acronyms very few consumers actually understand. Too often, consumers are too focused on bottom line costs while not fully understanding network terminology, like PPO, HMO or HSA. This creates another obstacle for health insurance consumers—they don’t understand terminology or have enough information to differentiate plans and networks, so they purchase plans that don’t adequately meet their needs. Content: PPO, HMO, HSA…what does ANY of this actually mean? We all know the law requires us to have health insurance, but too often we, as consumers, make some of our most important decisions based on bottom-dollar costs without taking into consideration some of the most important factors. Often, we’re looking at whether or not a plan includes copays for services such as doctor visits and prescriptions, or how high the deductible is, while overlooking a vitally important piece of the puzzle—the network a plan utilizes. Typically, the lowest-cost plans utilize “HMO” networks. HMO stands for “Health Maintenance Organization.” Generally speaking, HMO’s will offer more restricted access to the healthcare system. Quite often, you’ll find many of the top-rated hospitals in your area do not accept HMO plans, or accept very few. Your list of “in-network” physicians will also generally be significantly smaller than you typically see with PPO plans (which we’ll touch on here as well). With an HMO, you must designate a “gatekeeper” physician to be your point of contact for all your healthcare needs. If you require medical attention for something beyond the scope of your gatekeeper’s area of expertise, you must get their referral in order to see a specialist or any other healthcare provider. HMO plans, as a rule of thumb, do not provide any coverage for services provided by a healthcare provider outside of the HMO network. The importance of this fact cannot be understated. PPO’s are inherently different. PPO stands for “Preferred Provider Organization” and generally does provide coverage for services received by providers outside of the PPO network. While the cost of services provided by a provider outside of the PPO network is often much higher, your access to hospitals, doctors and other facilities is typically much broader, giving someone who is insured under a PPO more freedom to choose their providers. These are the two types of network arrangements we see in the health insurance market, and then, from them, we have different plan types, such as HSA Qualified High Deductible Health Plans, or “HDHP’s”. These HSA qualified HDHP’s can utilize either an HMO network or a PPO network. In order to be deemed as a “qualified” plan, the health insurance plan cannot not have copays for doctor visits, prescriptions or anything else prior to the deductible being met. In other words, if you go to the doctor for an illness, and the cost of whatever that doctor did to treat you was $200, then $200 is what you’ll have to pay. However, the benefit of a qualified HDHP with an HSA is the HSA itself. HSA stands for “Health Savings Account.” Think of it as a bank account you’re allowed to have in conjunction with a qualified HDHP, in which you, your employer or both of you may contribute money to, up to an IRS-specified cap. Any amount you personally contribute to this account (in other words, not your employer) becomes tax deductible on your personal income tax return the following year, and more importantly, as long as you use this money for qualified medical expenses, you never pay taxes on the money you contribute to the HSA. Watch the video interview with industry insurance expert and contributing author on different types of plans and networks, Kathy Garza. She provides clarity for those of us who are confused by health insurance acronyms and terminology, thus helping us gain understanding so we can make more-informed consumer choices regarding the health plans we purchase.
