Building Simple Box Columns - DIY Front Porch Home Improvement!

04:37
Changing the Exterior look and adding a little curb appeal is easier than you think! Here's just one of many One day projects that can bring your dated or lackluster house a little style. Box columns are easily constructed using tools many homeowners already have or can be borrowed from your handy neighbor. I'm using everyday, dimensional lumber from lowes and home depot. The particular boards are 2X8's and 2X6's. These columns are sitting on top of brick posts with concrete caps. The base block for the wood column, made from pressure treated lumber, is attached with an expanding masonry bolt to the concrete cap. Everything else is constructed with exterior grade decking screws. All screws are recessed into the wood with a special bit that drills a pilot and counter sink hole, it also keeps the wood from splitting. Check back for more videos soon, this is the first of many. And if you'd like to see more, I also have two other YouTube channels. One, "The Homestead Craftsman" https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRWsQfRiwGqBaVP_29OrZVw is all about being a craftsman, tools, wood, metal, leather, making, fixing and doing. The second channel is "Square Inch" https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1lTdH8FXMaexiX-IvsnSZw is specifically on the topic of another TINY house on wheels that I'm building. Check them both out and see what you think. Thanks for watching.

Make Wide Coves for Box Newel Posts

37:57
Make a wide custom cove profile using a simple tablesaw fixture to expand design possibilities for projects like these custom box newel posts. Learn how to plan, setup and use a 'cross fence' fixture to produce this wide 'graceful' cove profile. You'll also see a surprisingly simple and effective method to make a custom block that makes quick work of sanding the cove profile smooth enough for a perfect stained finish. There's also some related 'shop talk' discussion about clamps, the millwork design process and useful applications for CA glue (superglue) in the workshop. This is a link to the Next Level Carpentry Amazon Influencer's page: https://www.amazon.com/shop/nextlevelcarpentry where any tools or products purchased through links help support ongoing video production on this channel with paid ad fees from Amazon which I really appreciate! To download the SketchUp model I made and used to plan and design the railing system with these coved newel posts just to to the Component Warehouse and search "Custom Coved Newel Posts" and download the model. Please ad a 'like' to the model if you find it useful... thanks!

DIY Porch Columns Makeover

03:39
Our front porch needed some help. The 4 x 4 posts were underwhelming and the hand-made railings were over 20 years old. If you have 4 x 4 posts as part of your front porch and would like to make a HUGE difference in the curb appeal of your home, check this out and give it a shot. I'd say I have about $400 in this improvement including all the hardware and concrete stain.

How to build a Pole Building

12:36
I have Lowes Coupons!!!! $20 off $100 / 10% off up to your total purchase of $5000.00 @ https://www.craigheffernan.com Hello, Iʼm Jenny for Heffernan Construction Company. Today we are going to show you how to build a 24 foot by 32 foot pole building. We hope you find this video useful, and please donʼt forget to subscribe to see our upcoming videos. We used a skid steer with an attached auger saves a lot of time. It digs the holes 18 inches wide by 52 inches deep The concrete is cured solid and ready for the 4x6 treated post to sit on. All 4 corners are set first. They are straightened and plumbed. To assure that the building is square, we pull a diagonal measurement reading both ways. If each measurement is the same, its off to a square start. A treated 2 by 10 is used for the bottom girt board while The remaining horizontal boards are regular 2 by 6s. The vertical boards are 2 by 4s, and they are used on the corners, window & door openings. The nails used are pneumatic 3 1/4 inch and they are ACQ approved for the treated posts. These nails will not rust or corrode due to the chemicals of the treated lumber. For the garage door header we sandwich two 2 by 10s with 1/2 inch plywood glued in between. This header will have minimum weight load since it is on a non bearing wall. It will only have to hold itself, not the weight of the roof load. The roof trusses have a 24 foot span with 1 foot overhang at a 4/12 pitch. They are put 24 inches on center to accept R-38 blanket insulation. They are light enough to manage by hand, if any larger we would use a crane to lift in place. When installing trusses, always read the enclosed safety packet that come with them. It will guide you on how to safely handle and brace them. The roofing material is an energy star rated 26 gauge pre painted panel. The panels were precut to an exact measurement. We use matching color screws with a built in rubber washer to fasten the roof panels. The screw pattern is in a straight line and fastened tight to the 2 by 4 purlins. We used a 32 inch 9 light steel door. It is energy star rated and will swing inward. The pole building gets 5 windows that are also energy star rated. They are double pane, single hung and have built in nail fins. We outsource the gutter work. This company is set up to run very long continuous lengths of aluminum gutter. They install all the hangers, end caps, and gutter sealant. Also the guys punch out the hole and install the downspout drop. Then we take over for the easy install. Finally the garage door!! We purchased this door online for a 25% total tax and delivery savings. The local garage door company and the big box stores were overpriced. So we went online and ordered. They shipped the 7 1/2 foot by 16 foot custom insulated door directly to the job site. it took less than 3 weeks and arrived with easy to understand instructions. We saved 25% plus we installed it ourselves for additional savings. We were so pleased we produced a detailed instructional video to show you, the viewers how easy it was. Thank you again, as i am Jenny for Heffernan Construction, and "please" subscribe.

How to Build a Raised Deck with Wickes

17:05
A partly or fully raised deck can be a great addition to any garden, especially if the ground is sloping or uneven. Learn how to build a raised deck with this step by step guide from our Wickes experts. Subscribe to the Wickes YouTube channel here: http://po.st/YijIE1 For more Wickes garden and landscaping videos click here: http://po.st/jAXyHE Planning The key to a successful deck is in the planning. Avoid very wet areas completely and if the deck is in a shady area be prepared to treat and clean the wood annually. Draw your deck to scale on paper as accurately as you can, remember it's the deck boarding that governs the size of the deck. You should also bear in mind that any deck over 300mm off the ground will require planning permission. Corner Posts When digging the holes for your corner posts be sure to look out for any cables or pipes as you go. Once the soil is removed you should be left with a 300mm x 300mm square to a depth of 700mm for each post. Make sure you add a section of concrete block to each hole before adding in the post and Postcrete. Outer Frame If your deck is on a slope, start with corner where the deck is highest off the ground and mark on the post where the highest part of the frame will be. To ensure rain water runs off your deck, and away from the house, allow for a slight fall in the level of the deck frame by factoring in a fall of 2mm for every metre. Centre post and Support Joists Your support joists should run in the same direction as your deck boards. Sandwich the centre post between two support joists before securing with Postcrete. Trim your post by using a setsquare and a handsaw making sure you treat the cut ends as you go. When laying your landscape fabric it's best to overlap the fabric to ensure it covers all of the area under your deck. Steps Your steps should be supported on solid and level ground. When building your stairs you will also need to make sure they are flush with both the top and side of your frame. When securing your deck boards to the steps, always secure the front faces of the steps first. Deck Boards When securing deck boards we'd recommend drilling all fixing points with a 2mm bit to prevent them from splitting, also, if you countersink all drilled fixing points you will get a smoother finish. Keep spaces even between adjacent boards by using a spacer from an off cut of timber (we'd recommend a gap of 5-8mm to allow the timber to expand and contract). Fascia Boards Start by attaching all the boards that do not need to be cut down, with 64mm screws. If you are adding an angled board because the decking is being built on a slope you will need to add packers to the deck frame. Remember to also leave a gap of at least 5mm between the board and the ground as you do not want it touching the ground at any point. How to Build a Raised Garden Bed for Under $15!

08:39
Gardening season is in full swing and I'm trying out some raised garden beds on the farm thus year to improve our water drainage issues. We've been getting a lot of rain and or clay soil is getting really compacted and takes forever to drain. So raised garden beds it is! I've made four already and it's such a quick and easy project that I decided to make a video tutorial and share it with you in hopes of giving you some inspiration to try your hand at growing some food this year! There are a lot of videos and blog posts on inexpensive ways to build your own garden beds but many of them were not very inexpensive solutions in my eyes. I was able to make mine for very little money so I'm sharing what I did in this video with you. Before using any power tools please practice safety precautions to ensure proper and safe use of all tools and supplies. Read and follow manufacturer's instructions for the tools and supplies you are using. Use eye and hand protection if the project requires it and of course, have fun! Supplies you'll need: • Two 2x8x8 foot boards of untreated wood- I used pine but if you can get a good deal on some cedar or redwood then that would be better since they are both naturally rot resistant and should last longer. • 4 wooden chunks of a 2x4 cut to the width of the board you are using. In my case it was 7 3/8". • about 20 outdoor/exterior wood screws at 2.5" or longer. • Cordless drill with predrilling/countersinking bits This 4 foot x 4 foot raised bed cost me just under $15 and is a great way to start growing food, herbs or even just flowers. This is the size suggested in the Square Foot Gardening method. Give it a try! Thanks for watching! How to Build a Simple Deck Step

09:50
Simple deck step design which can be made in a little over an hour. I used 2x8 boards for the main framing and deck (1 1/4 inch thick) boards for the treads or top. Another option would be to just use 2x6 boards for the framing and the top treads which will both make the list of materials needed simpler and the height of the step will be more ideal at a total height of 7 inches opposed to my step which is 8 1/2 inches. Overall the experience level needed for this project is low and makes for a good evening or weekend project. Tools Needed 1) Miter Saw or Circular Saw 2) Tape Measure 3) Cordless Drill 4) Carpenter Square Supplies Needed 1) 2x6 boards 8 foot long (Quantity of 4) 2) 3 1/2 inch Deck Screws 3) 2 inch Deck Screws Other Options 1) Single Concrete Step: https://www.homedepot.com/p/36-in-x-12-in-x-8-in-Concrete-Step-Block-10018/202522521 2) Aluminum Single Step Stringer: https://www.lowes.com/pd/QuickStep-Quick-Step-1-Step-Aluminum-Deck-Stair-Stringer/1000267877 For more Helpful Videos and Articles Check Out Our Website at https://www.everydayhomerepairs.com/

I’d recommend using a miter saw. Remove hardware from the cooler. Assemble the legs. I used a Kreg Jig to drill 4 pocket holes in one board for each leg. Then connect using wood glue and 2 1/2 inch Kreg screws. Assemble the frame for the cooler out of 2×4 boards. Connect each 2×4 with 2 1/2 inch screws. You can make it as snug as you’d like. I left about a half inch of play on each side to make it easy to remove the cooler if needed. Use the cooler as a template or measure the cooler to determine how long to cut these boards. Attach the 4 corners to the top frame. Use 2 1/2 inch wood screws and put about 4 for each corner. Drill a pilot hole before putting the screws in so the wood doesn’t split. Add the apron. Rip fence boards on a table saw and then glue and nail them to the top as shown in the photo. This will create about a half inch overhang on each side. I cut the apron to 3 1/2 inches wide. Create the cooler support out of 2×4’s Place the frame upside down on a flat surface and slide the cooler in place. Next, put the support at the base of the cooler and attach to the legs using screws and pocket holes. If you don’t have a kreg jig, you could pre-drill and then run screws in at an angle. Add fence pickets around all sides to hide the cooler. I started by attaching a board in the middle of the sections and then moved to the left and right. Use as many full width fence boards as you can. Rip the outer boards on a table saw to get a perfect fit. I’d recommend spacing the boards roughly 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch from each other. Add trim horizontally on each side. Rip fence boards into 2 inch strips and then glue and nail the trim in place. Place the cooler in the frame and then mark where the hole will go through the side of the wood surround. Then drill a small hole through the wood from the inside. Next, use a larger bit or hole saw from the outside to finish the full sized hole. This is where the piping will go through. Determine the height and width of your cooler lid. Mine was a little less than 2 inches high and so I ripped a couple 2×4 boards to make them 2 inches tall. Then place the boards around the perimeter and cut to size. The lid should be snug with the wood. Attach the plastic cooler lid to the wood using 2 inch screws. Pre-drill and then put in the screw. Make sure the outer part of the lid is flush with the wood. The inner part will protrude from the wood because it is what will allow the cooler to stay in place when the lid goes down. The inner portion will seal the cooler. Cut 4 fence boards down to size and rip them each to the same width on the table saw. Leave about an 1/8 of an inch between each. Use glue and an air nailer to keep them in place. ---- Looking for more DIY videos? Be sure to check out our channel and subscribe for updates! We post a weekly tutorial every Thursday. Build an easy, inexpensive wood planter box

FREE PLANS for The BASIC MOBILE WORKBENCH ►► http://basicmobileworkbench.com/ Here's a planter box you can make for around $20. I used 2x4s and garden edging (bender board). This will rot away sooner than other types of wood, but for 20 bucks, I'll just build another one when this finally rots! Or course, you can use these same techniques on teak or cedar if you wanted something more permanent.
