Nobody has designed a new triplane since the end of WW1 so why not a modern light plane version using the latest technology and engines from the ultralight industry. We are not talking a pseudo copy of an old WW1 plane but a new light sport triplane using as much modern technology and materials as is practical and cost effective. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a triplane? Disadvantages; High drag from wing interference and lift loss from six wing tips. The extra work required to build six wings. Loss of visibility due to the location of the center and lower wings blocking the line of sight to the front and down. Advantages; The high aspect ratio of the wings allows an excellent rate of climb and a good glide ratio if the wing interference drag can be reduced. High roll rate from the short span wings. Good longitudinal stability due to the extra lift centers. Unusual and eye catching aircraft that will attract attention no matter where it is flown. How do we maximize the advantages and minimize the disadvantages? By utilizing a modern airfoil, narrow wing chord, lots of wing stagger and properly shaped wingtips we can reduce the interference drag and the tip loss. Create "quick build" wings using common wood working tools that most builders have on hand. The wings would be built much the same way as a model airplane. http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com – AeroLites began producing ultralight aircraft in the early 1980s. In 1989 it purchased the design rights, manufacturing rights, and tooling for the Ag Master from Jack Hutchison of Hutchison aircraft. They then renamed the plane, the AeroMaster. The AeroMaster is a very unique aircraft in that it is designed to be a very rugged and affordable spray plane for farmers. In fact, I had the opportunity to visit Louisiana and fly the AeroMaster. Powered by a Rotax 582 65 hp engine, loaded with chemical the aircraft jumped off the ground in less than 250 feet. Climb rate was well over 700 ft./m, and cruise speed came in at 75 mph. According to the manufacturer the plane will pay for itself in less than four years, when compared to having a commercial sprayer operator come in and spray your property. The aircraft is constructed of 4130 chromoly steel tubing, uses aluminum ladder style construction in the wings, which are covered in Dacron sailcloth. The plane is 18'5" long, 7 feet high and has a wingspan of 28'7" with a total wing area of 145 ft. This gives the aircraft, a wing loading up 6.86 pounds per square foot. When flown without the spray equipment attached aircraft is quite capable of climbing at 1200 ft./m. Stall speed comes in at 25 mph. With the standard 10 gallon fuel tank. You have approximately 2 hours of flight time, or roughly 150 mile range. The spray tank is 30 gallons and has an emergency dump system. http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com – Several years ago at Sun N Fun, and then Airventure I saw a plane in the prototype stage called the Patriot designed by American Patriot Aircraft. The plane was a a little rough around the edges, but this was to be expected in a first prototype. At Airventure 2010 all the rough edges had been ground away and the factory had on display a plane that was just about ready to begin the production process. The new unit has more horsepower and weighs less than the original prototype. While the tail section still features a twin boom arrangement with dual rudders, the booms have been replaced with aluminum channels rather than tubes. The Patriot is equipped with full span flaperons which give it excellent slow speed performance and control, these can also be reflexed to give a better cruise speed. The Patriot's nose has been redesigned and is longer and rounder for better visibility and pilot comfort. The Patriot features a welded fuselage, covered with a rivet together aluminum skin. Power is supplied by a Subaru E81A which has been modified to produce 140 hp. Which gives the Patriot a 110 to 115 mph cruise. It has side by side seating, with twin control yokes using push pull tubes. Kit production is expected to being in the fall of 2010. Patriot is currently being offered in kit form, with plans to move forward with LSA certification in the near future. In this issue we speak to Dan Horton about his plans built Early Bird Jenny, design by Dennis Wiley. Dan spent nearly 5 years building the Canadian version of the Early Bird Jenny. This allowed him to move the center of gravity of the aircraft rearward so that his 6 foot frame could fit more comfortably in the plane. The Early Bird Jenny uses a welded 4130 chromoly steel fuselage, with the wing constructed from aluminum tubing. The Jenny is covered in standard aircraft covering materials. Building times are reported to be between 1000 and 1500 hrs. when building from plans. Power for the Early Bird Jenny is supplied by a three cylinder Suzuki engine taken from a Chevy Sprint. Dan has modified the ignition system so that he has dual ignition, he also has three carburetors feeding the three cylinders on the engine, so that the engine produces just over 65 hp Dan also designed a belt reduction drive for his plane, as well as a steerable tail skid. The aircraft uses a standard stick and rudder control system, with a center mounted stick and left hand throttle. Dan’s Early Bird Jenny takes off in about 150 feet, climbs out at gross at 500 ft./m, and when flown solo at over 800 ft./m. Asso Aerei Srl (Ace Aircraft Limited) is an Italian designer of light and ultralight aircraft founded by Giuseppe (Bepi) Vidor, all his aircraft are wooden designs, most with tricycle landing gear. The aircraft are homebuilt from plans or from very basic kits. The term "experimental aircraft" is usually used to refer to aircraft flown with an experimental certificate.In the United States, this includes most homebuilt aircraft; many of which are based on conventional designs and hence are experimental only in name. The term "research aircraft", by contrast, generally denotes aircraft modified to perform scientific studies, such as weather research or geophysical surveying. Experimental aircraft: An experimental aircraft is an aircraft that has not yet been fully proven in flight. Scratch Built Aircraft -- HKS Avenger

This started as a "Fisher Avenger V" and was built from a set of plans from Fisher Flying Products. I've made many modifications from what the plans outline; what you see here incorporates those changes. The engine is a HKS 700E, a 60 HP air and oil cooled four stroke. I believe this is the first HKS installed in a Fisher aircraft. It's been an excellent match to this airframe. Building an airplane just takes common sense, patience and perseverance. Great Method for Transporting a Homebuilt AIrcraft

Homebuilt experimental aircraft are often built at home in garages. At some point they need to be transported to the local airport for final assembly to attach the wings and test the engine. Moving an aircraft fuselage can be a tricky task. Usually a trailer is borrowed for the purpose, but the aggravation begins when the landing gear is either too wide for the trailer deck or the trailer's wheel fenders obstruct the loading process. Which includes lifting it off the news websites who have permission to publish it. He spent £18,000 on the three-year project – establishing a DIY aircraft plant at his home in Reading, Berks. At first Alan beavered away in his spare time on plans he bought for £150 in 2012, but soon his hobby became an obsession. He found a 100hp Rolls Royce engine in the Netherlands which he re-built, the wheels were bought on eBay and the seat belts were specially made in the USA. After three years the plane was ready and Alan proudly flew it for the first time in September 2015. It is an Isaacs Spitfire – a 6/10th model of the iconic Supermarine Spitfire – which was designed as a single-seat replica to be built at home. Alan’s has since been flown by an ex RAF test pilot to clear it for aerobatics and he has already clocked up 60 hours flying time. Former driving instructor Alan said: “Like every true Brit I wanted to fly a Spitfire. “Five years ago you could only get a flight in one if you enrolled in a two-day course. It cost £5,000 and you only got 40 minutes flying the Spitfire. “So I thought about it and realised I could spend that money on building one. “I built it purely because I wanted to build it.” Alan had previously built his own Pietenpol Air Camper and before that made and flew model planes competitively for years. The dad-of-one added: “I like making model planes. I’ve been doing it since a lad – but full-size planes interest me too. “I always wanted to build one for myself so I built a Pietenpol about 25 years ago and have been flying it since.

This is Scott Ehni's custom Zenith CH701 airplane (that he scratch-built from plans) powered by the lightweight Garrett JFS 100-13A Turboshaft engine, putting out at least 90 BHP at a prop speed of 3,100 rpm, burning about 12 gph. The small APU will work on almost any liquid that will burn. The best off-airport fuel choice is a mix of diesel and unleaded regular gas as it burns a bit cleaner. Bede Corp, Bede Aircraft, BD-4, BD-6C experimental aircraft kits. Starting as a side project in Mr Bede's shop while the engineering department was occupied with other tasks, the BD-6 was designed and flown in the mid-1970’s. It was constructed with the same bolt- together angle method as the BD-4. The high wing, all-metal, single place, aircraft incorporated a Hirth engine (same engine utilized briefly for the BD-5) and a 2/1-belt reduction drive that applied all the functions of the BD-4 into a condensed single seat craft. The prototype had a cruising speed of 149 MPH and recorded over 150 flight hours with excellent results. Unfortunately in 1993, the prototype, was damaged in a flood in St. Louis, but was rebuilt after a short time.The BD-6 is still undergoing a painstaking restoration process. The BD-6 is closely related to the BD-17 in overall size and even incorporates some of the same parts, but features its own set of complexities that make this plane unique. The BD-6 plans are currently updated and all parts are available. There are two recommended engines, the 60 HP HKS or 80 HP Jabiru. Hawk Single and Ultra At AirVenture 2018 I met and interviewed Bob Santom and his son, LB. Another son is also involved making the enterprise a family affair. Preparing for our video recording, I learned about their plans. The Santom’s will take over production and sales of the single place Hawk models including the Part 103 model and the Ultra, a somewhat beefier model that is built as an Experimental Amateur Built (EAB). My discussion with Bob and LB was encouraging. I was impressed to hear the enthusiasm from father and son for keeping this series of Hawks available. This is great news for Hawk fans. The two place models Terry Short and son have been assembling look great and will continue. This includes the FAA-accepted LSA model powered by the Rotax 912. Terry is busy enough that the single place models were lower on his to-do list so in stepped the Santom’s who will assure the single place models get extra attention. “We’re located on an airport community about 60 miles from Terry’s Lake Wales Airport location,” said Bob. This will make it easy on both enterprises as the Santom’s will lean on Terry’s fabrication abilities as they use many parts that are interchangeable between the single and two-seat models of Hawk. “We talked to many Hawk enthusiasts at recent shows and we were pleased to hear of genuine interest in the single place models,” Bob added. When you cover the ultralight industry for over three decades you get to meet a lot of the "original designers." Holmer Kolb, Bill Moyes, Bob Bailey, Randy Schliter, John Moody, to name a few. This year I met and interviewed the original designer of the SR 1 Hornet and designer and manufacturer of the Mariner, Larry Seifert. Larry entered the ultralight market back in the early 70's with his Hornet bi-plane "a cross between the Easy Riser and Volmer Jenson VJ 24." The Hornet was originally powered by a Mac 101 go cart engine, was foot launched, and had three axis controls using elevator and ailerons through a side stick arrangement. With it's large wing area and light weight it made an excellent glider. Later models had landing gear added to them and engine power increased to the Rotax 503. Then in 1989 he introduced his latest design the Mariner. The Mariner is a two place tandem seating amphibious bi-plane. It is currently being offered in kit form, which will take the average builder between 300 and 600 hours to build, and requires no special tools, or jigging. It is also offered as a ready to fly plane under the new Light Sport Aircraft category. The Mariner is set up to take a number of different engines, from the Rotax 503 and 582 on up to the Subaru auto conversion. Depending on engine power cruise comes in between 55 and 75 mph, top speed 95 mph, climb rate 1,000 feet per minute and stall 28 mph. These super light aircraft are available as plans, as a kit for the do-it-yourself individual, or as a finished product for those who prefer ready-made. Sdplanes USA currently offers the sd-1 minisport single seat airplane kit. Available in the TD, TG, and TGC versions, this model has a maneuvering speed of 98 mph (156 km/h) with a maximum speed (vne) of 131 mph (210 km/h). The aircraft is 14.27 ft (4,35 m) in length, with a height of 4 ft (1,23m), a wingspan of 19.68 ft (6,0m), and a tank capacity of 9 gal (34 l). Maximum pilot weight is 233 lbs (105 kg). SD1 Mini Sport experimental aircraft – Construction The fuselage is comprised of sitka spruce trusses reinforced with carbon fiber and carbon rods, covered with thin plywood. The inside width of the cockpit is 21.3” (54 cm) in the standard version, with expansion of the pilot compartment possible with the XL version. The back of the pilot seat is inclined slightly for comfort and is removable to allow access to the baggage compartment located behind the seat. The cabin hood is made of composite with a polycarbonate windshield. Wing assembly consists of a composite main spar with carbon caps to which the ribs of extruded polystyrene are glued. This skeleton is covered with thin plywood and wing tips of extruded polystyrene with fiberglass lay-up are attached. The wings are connected to the fuselage by two main and two auxiliary pins. The flaperons are connected to the controls by a control pin. The construction of the horizontal tail is similar to that of the wings. The tail is completely moveable, has an anti-servo tab, and is statically balanced. Spring trimming is under the pilot seat. The fin has a main composite spar with carbon caps and a tail hinge. Tail attachment consists of control and tab rods, and a pin. The horizontal tail and flaperons are controlled by pushrods and bellcranks. The flaperon mixer is under the pilot seat. The rudder is controlled by 2mm cables. SD1 Mini Sport experimental aircraft – The Engine Any engine from 24 to 50 HP can be used in the sd-1 minisport. Maximum engine weight is 93 lbs (42 kg). The integral fuel tank is made of fiberglass and PVC foam and is located behind the firewall. The electrical system is battery-operated and will accept a 12 V outlet for accessories like GPS. The instrument panel includes an airspeed indicator, altimeter, compass, vario, and slip indicator. There is also space for a COM transceiver and TPD with a diameter of 57mm. The Com antenna is built into the airframe. SD1 Mini Sport experimental aircraft – GRS Parachute Rescue System The sd-1 will accommodate the GRS 4/240 and the Magnum 300 rescue systems or any other system of choice in a similar weight range. The rescue system is attached to the fuselage bulkhead behind the pilot’s back. The front ropes are attached to the upper engine mount hinges. The auxiliary rope is attached to the fuselage behind the cabin. If a light engine (like a Briggs and Stratton or the Hirth F-33) is used, the rescue system is mounted on the firewall. There is the certified airplane; in which an aircraft goes through different phases, testing and certification process. And there is the experimental airplane; which you buy a kit and build the airplane yourself. I personally have always been fascinated with the idea of building my own flying machine. With an experimental airplane, you have a hand in literally everything that goes into the airplane. You get to pick your own engine, avionics and interior design. That’s freedom on a different level. That said, safety remains the number one factor when it comes to flying and aviation in general. So if you ever decide to go this route, always think of safety first! In this video I picked out five of the top single engine airplanes that are in the experimental category. Keep in mind that the ranking of these airplanes are based on several factors. Namely: cost, performance, design, comfort and utility. The airplanes listed in this video are: Lancer evolution - From Lancair. This is one of the fastest kit build airplanes out there. It is also one of the most expensive to build or own. The kit alone starts at over $600,000. A finished airplane will run you anywhere from $1.2 million to $1.5 million. The cost is mostly due to the turbine jet engine that powers this aircraft. We’re talking a lot of horses here. You have three different engine choices of 867HP, 750HP and 550HP. For those who build this airplane, it’s really about speed and how fast they can get to their destination. This airplane will cruise at well over 300 knots, close to 400 miles per hour and it will climb at 4000 feet a minute. Those are performance numbers you typically find in jets. Glacier III - From Glasair. The Glasair III retractable gear is also one of the fastest single engine airplanes out there. And the Glasair is not only fast, it is also nimble and very sporty. Frankly it takes a lot more pilot skills to fly this bird. This airplane will climb at close to 3000 feet a minute on a normal calm day and it will cruise at close to 300 miles per hour while only burning 13 to 15 gallons of fuel per hour. Talk about fuel efficiency. The Glasair also has a nice roomy cabin for 2. Spacious with more than enough head room for taller people. A complete Glasair III can be bought anywhere from $145,000 - $250,000. Cubcrafter Xcub - This airplane is built for the absolute nomad or the adventurous pilot. One of the better bush airplanes out there with amazing capabilities and useful load. The Xcub will take off and land in the shortest distance, basically this is an airplane you can fly right out of your backyard; joking. The Xcub model is factory built but you can buy a kit with similar or better performance and build your own airplane. Best thing about the Xcub is the simplicity of flying it. Needless to say that cubcrafters took their time making the interior space very welcoming. A brand new Xcub sells for $317,000 but you can find older models used for much less. Sling 4 - From The Airplane factory. The sling is one of my personal favorite experimental airplanes. Not only because it is affordable and light, but because it is very cost efficient. Unlike other 4 seater airplanes in the market, the sling 4 only runs on a small 115 hp turbo charged engine. That power output although small, guarantees you very low fuel burn during your flight. The sling 4 only burns about 6 gallons of fuel per hour while traveling 140 miles per hour. This airplane has 4 seats and yes you can put a person on all four seats and still have a good amount of travel range. Vans RV-10 - In the experimental world, Vans is arguably the king. It has the most airplanes actively flying in the air and also being built. Last I checked, there are well over 10,000 registered vans RV aircrafts. The RV-10 is an amazing 4 seater airplane with great performance. Performance comparable to the Cirrus SR22, a plane that cost nearly four times the price of an RV-10. Unlike the Cirrus though, one of the best feature of the RV-10 is it’s landing capabilities. It has a shorter take off and landing distance, and you can land in unpaved runways. This airplane will cruise at 200 miles per hour, climb rate is 2000 feet a minute and have a useful load of over 1000 pounds. This is Robert's 25th year in business and the SE 5A is his 25th aircraft design. Robert has build a number of WW I replica aircraft over the years. Many including this SE 5A have gone on to star in movies including "Amelia" and "Flyboys". The SE 5A was also order for a movie which will be shot in the Arizona desert, but based on action that happened in Europe. The SE 5A kit takes about 450 hours to construct, with all of the welding done by the factory. The original SE 5A was powered by an eight cylinder engine, and the plane weighed in at over 1400 lbs. Robert's SE 5A replica come in at about half that weight and is powered by a four cylinder VW engine using a reduction drive. These powerplants are produced by Valley Engineering. Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a • The S.E.5 (Scout Experimental 5) was Designed by by the Royal Aircraft Factory in Farnborough. • It was built around the new 150 HP Hispano -- Suiza engine. • The first prototype flew on 22 Nov 1916. • The S.E.5a was known in service as an exceptionaly strong aircraft with very good lateral control at low speeds. The S.E.5a was inherently stable making it an excellent gunnery platform while being quite maneurverable. While not as agile as the Camel in a tight dog fight it was much easier to fly particulary for novice pilots. • In total 5,265 Se5's were built by six manufactures 38 of these Austin --built S.E.5a were assigned to the American Expeditionary Force with the 25th Aero Squadron. Coming in at # 10 on our list of ultralight aircraft that give you the biggest bang for your buck is the Legal Eagle. The Legal Eagle which was designed by Leonard Milholland is single seat, high wing, ultralight aircraft first introduced to the U.S. market at Sun N Fun in 1998. The name Legal Eagle came about when Leonard weighted the plane and it came in at 10 lbs less than the 254 lbs weight limit for the U.S. - thus "this Eagle is legal became the "LEGAL EAGLE." The plane features a welded fuselage with an all wood wing, similar to that of a Mini Max, the tail section is aluminums tube using pop rivets and gussets. Controls are standard stick and rudder, with ailerons. The plane is powered by a "better half" VW engine. The plane cruises along at 53 mph, stalls at 19, and according to Leonard is "real responsive and a pleasure to fly." All of the control systems are located outside the fuselage and the wings are completely sealed to prevent "those creepy crawly things" from getting in. "The whole idea of this plane is to be economical - you can afford it if you want to do the work." The plans consist of a cover sheet with the specifications on it, 42 sheets of drawings, and a materials list. Leonard estimates building time to be about 6 months. The engine is unique in that it is not a "half VW" but rather uses a full case. Plans for both the Legal Eagle and the engine are also available. The design features a fuselage of welded 4130 steel tubing, mated to an all-wood wing made from spruce. The struts and tail surfaces are made from 6061 T6 aluminium tubing. The flying surfaces are covered with standard aircraft fabric covering materials. The rear fuselage is normally left as an open truss structure to save weight and to ensure that the aircraft does not exceed the FAR 103 maximum speed of 55 knots (102 km/h; 63 mph). Like the fuselage, the taildragger landing gear is sprung steel. The aircraft has been developed into several variants of the basic design including the XL version for larger pilots and a two seat ultralight trainer and Light-sport aircraft. One of the best contenders is the Affordaplane - or 'A-Plane' as this sophisticated, yet ultra-simple ultralight is popularly called. The Affordaplane was introduced in 2001 as a back-to-basics, all aluminum, true three axis airplane that anyone could build, especially those on a tight budget. The design goals for this unique airplane were nostalgic looks (having incorporated the best elements of classic taildraggers such as the Cubs and Champs), ease of assembly, and performance that rivals more expensive ultralights. Safety was also paramount, and resulted in an airframe that surrounds the pilot through 360 degrees. A thirteen year perfect safety record backs up the claim that this is one safe, tough bird. The A-Plane's fuselage structure is based on immensely strong two-inch square tubes, similar to many gyroplanes. A technique known as 'match-hole' drilling is used to join the parts. Cut, drill, and bolt, to get a perfect fit. Many builders complete their airframe in a single weekend, an unheard of achievement in airplane construction! At 5' high, the A-Plane is 17'3" long with a 27.5' wing span. The wing features full span ailerons, for perfect control even during strong crosswinds, that would ground other ultralights. Weight is a legal 254 pounds with a gross weight of 540 pounds. This airplane can easily accommodate 6' plus pilots that weigh up to 240 pounds. Controls are standard three-axis stick and rudder with full span ailerons. The flight envelope was designed to be ultralight legal in accordance with FAR Part 103. Cruise is around 60 mph with a vne of 75 mph. Stall meets the 27 mph or lower minimum. Takeoffs are between 45 to 50 mph and and landing speeds come in around 28 to 30 mph. Climb rates average 1000 feet per minute. Engines recommended in the plans are in the 35 to 45 hp range. One increasingly popular choice is the 1/2 Volkswagen engine. Other motors such as the Kawasaki 440 are also a good choice. Plans for the Affordaplane are very complete, and have been recently revised and updated. http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com – The Double Eagle Airplane is a "plans built" design powered by the widely available stock VW engine, that will carry 2 people with a useful load around 515 Lbs. It can be built and flown under the Light Sport Aircraft Category. This is a strong and simple airplane designed using traditional and proven aviation tubular steel technology. It is easy to build and there has developed around it a strong core of builders that offer help and support for building the aircraft. There is also a full kit developed by John Bolding in consultation with the designer that makes building this design even faster. Leonard built it as his 11th airplane project as an outgrowth of the need to have a trainer for his very popular Legal Eagle Ultralight. The Double Eagle started to form up in 2002 and was first widely seen at the 2003 Oshkosh show. A repeat performance in 2004 broadened its popularity, and many kits started out the door. "DE" is getting special treatment this year (2007) because of an invitation that Leonard Received from the EAA to display the Double Eagle this year at the Air Venture 2007 Air Show. It seems that EAA membership has been asking for an affordable Light Sport Aircraft and most others while fine airplanes tend to run upwards of $50,000. Since the Double Eagle can be certified in this category and costs under 10-12 thousand dollars (even paying retail, and getting some building help), it is very affordable the invite went out. The aircraft is sporting a new Culver prop and has many cosmetic improvements and tweaks this year in celebration of the event. Because the Legal Eagle and the Better Half VW engine tend to dominate the www.betterhalfvw.com website, I decided that this year the "DE" would get its own website and so www.DoubleEagleAirplane.com was born. I hope that all the visitors to this site will give this airplane the look it deserves as it is easy to fly and using auto gas is easy to prep and fuel for those that just want a quick flight around the patch, but has enough useful load that 14 gallons of fuel (10 under LSA), a portable radio and GPS can take you lots of places as well. The airplane is so light it is also easy to trailer (the wings remove simply) and having STOL characteristics can be flown from many flat areas that would barely support the moniker airport. In this issue we talk to a Sky Raider builder/pilot/owner about his tandem seating Sky Raider 2 which he built from kit. His Sky Raider is powered by the Rotax 503. At the time that the video was shot the craft was on large tundra tire, but the owner has plans to build a set of floats and install them on the plane. The Sky Raider 2 is a tandem seating aircraft, while it is labeled as a two seat aircraft it only has control system for the pilot and the weight limit is 150 lbs. The SkyRaider II uses standard stick and rudder controls with flaps. Power can be supplied by a variety of Rotax and Hirth aircraft engines. Performance of the plane would depend on the engine option and what category the aircraft was built to fit into. The Risen features carbon construction, is a two seat side by side seating ultralight airplane with a large cabin width (123cm) for the pilot and passenger comfort, both enjoying the panoramic view from a unique motorized canopy, surrounded by gorgeous leather interior, with two 10” and one 7” Dynon touch, Bose headsets; and a two axis autopilot. This option substantially reduces build time, reduces drag, improves performance and will improve the resale value of Chippers. The metal wing option is offered for $1320. Application of the metal skins is bonded by the builder in a simple process which may be done in four hours per wing skin. The net weight difference adds 15 pounds to the aircraft. In comparison to conventional fabric, the builder will save several hundred hours of time. Build time estimates have been changed for Chipper. With metal skins, total build time is now estimated at 700 hours. With purchase of a Quick Build kit and by having Builder Assist install the skins, estimated build time is reduced to 350 hours. How about something much more affordable? A taildragger called Bearhawk has picked up accolades from AirVenture judges and owners appear very loyal. Sometimes those of us close to factory built Light-Sport Aircraft tend to forget about the homebuilt community. However, more pilots exercising the privileges of Sport Pilot are flying kit-built airplanes than ready-to-fly models, a trend that is likely to continue because a kit represents a lower cost option and one where the owner can more easily do all repair work. Let me clarify, though. Bearhawk is Sport Pilot eligible (using a term my longtime EAA friend, Ron Wagner, coined); it is technically not a Light-Sport. Bearhawk LSA made its debut at AirVenture two years ago as a prototype constructed by its designer, Bob Barrows. Recently a customer flew the first completed kit. Bearhawk Aircraft owner/builder Mark Goldberg completed the first Bearhawk LSA quick-build kit, N514AK, and flew it to AirVenture. The trip from Texas took 9.7 hours cruising at just under 100 mph while burning 4.5 gallons per hour. Portions of the flight were done at up to 118 mph consuming 6 gph Mark said. Goldberg's Bearhawk uses a Barrows-engineered 105-horsepower Continental Motors O-200 engine under the cowl. Following a four seat model, Bearhawk LSA is "a clean-sheet design with an all-new airfoil, developed by Harry Riblett," said Barrows. Construction is similar to other Bearhawk aircraft, with fuselage and tail surfaces of welded 4130 chromoly frames covered in fabric. The all aluminum, flush riveted wings are supported by a single strut. Bearhawk designs are popular for their solid performance and pleasant flight qualities. The designs are known for short field capability, gentle slow speed manners, yet manage reasonably high cruise speeds. The legions of folks buying Cubalike designs can consider Bearhawk and save a bundle while flying faster, not a bad combination. Bearhawk is available as a quick-build kit from the Austin, Texas company. Empty weight of Bearhawk LSA is 750+ pounds, depending on equipment an owner installs, yielding a useful load of 570 pounds. With 30-gallon tanks full of fuel, payload calculates to 390 pounds. Of course local flying can be done with less than that large amount of fuel; the 31-inch-wide cockpit will accommodate a couple big fellows in tandem seating (photo). As the airplane is designed for a maximum weight of 1,500 pounds, Bearhawk boasts an additional margin at the 1,320-pound LSA limit. A quick-build Bearhawk LSA with no welding required and wings completed to a significant extent — including full riveting of the top skin, fuel tanks, and ailerons — costs $36,000. The welded steel frame has all tabs in place and is primed and painted. Even with exterior paint, avionics, and a new O-200 engine, a completed airplane may cost less than $80,000 or about half of a basic model CubCrafters. Other engine choices (65 to 120 horsepower is supported) can further hold down the expense, especially if you find a good used powerplant. CommuterCraft, Innovator by Commuter Craft, Richard Hogan talks about the Innovator Experimental Aircraft. The CommuterCraft Innovator is an all composite, two seat, side by side seating experimental aircraft design that includes an option for folding wings. Engine options include both Continental Titan models the 180-HP IO-340 or the 200-HP IO-370. When equipped with the 200-HP version, the Innovator has an 850-pound useful load and a range of 940 miles. Cruise is estimated at 194 MPH. The blended-wing, three-surface design includes a canard to resist a stall of the main wing. High-taile he canard, however, creates a requirement for a high-speed approach, in order to prevent the canard from stalling, Hogan says. To solve that problem, Commuter Craft added a horizontal stabiliser on a twin-boomed, high-tail. Commuter Craft is ready to welcome the first builders of the company’s two-place homebuilt Innovator to Commuter’s Cartersville, Georgia, factory to begin construction. The planes will be built at the factory where the company says it will take two to three weeks for owners to complete their 51 percent of the aircraft with the plane ready to fly in about three months. Commuter Craft founder and president Richard Hogan indicates that the first group of builders have all had experience building aircraft before. T hese "Alpha Builders" have been chosen to vet Commuter Craft’s Builder Assist Program in addition to putting together new airplanes. Lockheed Martin X-56 Designed to explore high altitude long endurance flight technologies the Lockheed Martin is an unmanned vehicle that first took to the skies in July of 2013. Two were built, and the crafts are small, just seven and a half feet long with a 27 and a half foot wingspan. They last made news in November 2015 when the Air Force announced that one crashed during a flight at Edwards Air Force Base in California. 7. Junkers Ju 390 Built by the Germans during World War Two it's a good thing these long range bombers never got the chance to show their full capabilities. The Junkers Ju 390 was shown to Hitler on November 26, 1943, at Insterburg, East Prussia just a month after performing beautifully in its maiden flight. Two prototypes were built, and the Air Ministry ordered 26 additional models to be constructed. The Germans began to lose the war, and these plans were scrapped by late 1944. The original prototype was destroyed as the Allies approached at the end of April 1945. 6. Stipa-Caproni You’ve never seen an airplane quite like this before. Distinguished Italian aircraft designer Luigi Stipa built the Caproni in 1932. It's hollow, barrel-shaped fuselage completely enclosed its engine and propeller, giving the plane its unique look. Only one original was ever built as the Italian Air Force showed no desires in pursuing further development of the craft. Interest must have persisted in the Caproni however as a ⅗ replica was constructed in Australia in 1998 that was accurate down to the paint scheme. It flew two successful test flights in 2001 and is on display today. 5. Bell X-22 Of all of the experimental planes built for the Navy the Bell X-22, which was unveiled in Niagara Falls in 1965 was one of the most fascinating. The odd looking craft could take off vertically from a total stand still. Unfortunately, its propellers failed during a test flight, and the first prototype crashed in August of 1966. Technicians salvaged the plane to build a second prototype which would first fly, with improved performance, in August of 1967. Though the X-22 was deemed a success and the best of its kind the Navy canceled its program and the surviving prototype would be relegated to test flights, the last of which occurred in 1988. 4. Rockwell HiMAT This remarkable looking craft was built to explore technologies for future fighter aircraft. NASA developed two models in the late 70’s, and the first flights took place in 1979. Its design team decided to make the craft remotely operated for several reasons. Firstly it would be safer to not have a pilot in the craft. It was also cheaper to build it this way and meant they didn’t have to fit it with an ejection seat. Testing of the experimented aircraft concluded in 1983, and the two that were built remain on display to this day. 3. Vertol VZ-2 Only one of these bulky, odd looking crafts were ever constructed. The United States built the Vertol VZ-2 in 1957 and, like the Bell X-22, it was made to take off and land vertically. The plane was part of a test program that came to an end in 1965, by which time it had amassed 450 flights. Due to its one of a kind status the Vertol VZ-2 was preserved by the National Air and Space Museum. 2. NASA M2-F1 One of the weirdest things you’ll ever see in flight, the M2-F1 was developed by NASA in 1962 to test the wingless lifting body concept. The vehicle was had no means of powering itself so initial testing took place by towing the craft across California’s Rogers Dry Lakebed behind a specially modified Pontiac Catalina convertible. After this, it was towed in midair for further tests by another NASA aircraft, the C-47. The M2-F1 was retired in 1966 and remains on display at Edwards Air Force Base. 1. Flaming Pencil Seeing as how this aircraft was built to research supersonic speeds it's easy to understand how it got its nickname. The speed of sound had been broken in 1948, but no one fully understood the effects that this great speed would have on a moving craft so the Royal Air Force began building what would become the Bristol 188, or Flaming Pencil in 1954. It would take eight years, but the plane finally achieved flight on April 14, 1962. It would record 51 total flights and in this time would manage a top speed of 1,440 miles per hour at an altitude of 36,000 feet.

Dan Johnson talks to Greg Westberry of Westberry Manufacturing about the Thatcher CX -- 4 single seat experimental light sport aircraft and the soon to be released CX 5, during the EAA Sun N Fun convention held at Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland Florida. Greg is producing kits for the Thatcher CX 4. He is also preparing kits for the Thatcher CX 5 a tandem seating two seat experimental aircraft. The kits that Greg is producing are manufactured using CNC equipment, with matched hole drilling for easy parts alignment. This type of building process means that all of the holes are predrilled and all of the metal comes pre-bent. This means no jigs are needed to build the aircraft as the parts act as the jigs when they are clecoed together. Building from plans using raw materials will take between 900 and 1000 hours to complete. Building from kits will cut this building time to more than half. The Thatcher line of aircraft were been designed by Dave Thatcher for first time homebuilders, with no special tools or knowledge required. Dave aircraft mechanic, designer and builder is in his 80's and has been involved in aviation since his youth. Both the Thatcher CX 4 and CX 5 are all metal aircraft powered by Volkswagen aircraft engine conversions. Currently there are over 40 CX 4 aircraft flying with approximately another 50 in various stages of completion. This is a one of a kind Cozy jet aircraft that I got a ride in on new years day 2014. Enjoy... Thanks Frank for this amazing Ride and Dad for hooking me up, I will never forget it! Here is some Info from Frank: Range is 2 hours start to stop and in miles it depends on altitude. I idle at 22 gph, take off at 127 gph. About 6K fpm (feet per minute) climb to fl(flight level) 060. Cruise at 300 kts at fl200 burning 38 gph. effective long range 650 miles with 30 minute reserve.. Aircraft is limited to 220 kts vne Engine produces 800 lbs of thrust. No, I did not build this aircraft. I, (Bob) just happened to be lucky enough to get a ride in it. Sorry the footage gets a little bad. Had the parents video taping it and they were having a hard time keeping up with the aircraft. Thanks again Frank!

The H-3 is also a tube and fabric-covered sportplane with construction methods comparable to the H-2 biplane. However, instead of strut- and cable-bracing, the H-3 features a cantilevered wing with a design G-load of +5 to -3. It first flew with an engine of 28 horsepower, but normally is built with engines in the 40 to 50 horsepower range now. The clean configuration gives it a very impressive cruise speed compared to other very light aircraft. The design won first place awards in its category at the EAA Sun 'n Fun Fly-in at Lakeland, Florida in both 1989 and 1990. The designer developed a warbird variant of the H-3 in 1993, based on the P-40 Warhawk of "Flying Tiger" fame. It was designated HP-40, but is not offered now as a separate set of plans. However, H-3 builders who wish to opt for this variant can receive supplemental drawings to enable them to make the minor changes. One of those, the substitution of tube and fabric wing tips in place of fiberglass tips on the H-3, is an option that many builders choose for the standard H-3. http://www.ultralightflyer.com – The M-19 is a single-place, high-wing, conventional fixed gear (taildragger) aircraft powered by the Volkswagen engine converted for aircraft use. Recommended horsepower is in the range of 50-60 HP. Any less than that will probably work, but will be borderline in performance. Any more than that will be extra weight and fuel consumption, and won't gain you much of value. The basic design does not include brakes, wing flaps, or trim. The Barnard M-19 "Flying Squirrel" is the sport pilot's airplane, an affordable, simple, reliable homebuilt airplane that brings with it a return to flying the way it was intended to be. Many other homebuilt and kit designs have made these same claims, but very few have delivered. This one does, and Marvin Barnard is the main reason why. The M-19 was conceived and designed by Marvin R. Barnard, a man who has managed to focus on the most basic of motivations for homebuilding: to create an airplane which can be built quickly and easily using basic materials and methods, at the lowest possible cost. Marvin built and tested the prototype, and flies it regularly. The M-19 was never intended to be a trophy winner in any category but one: SATISFACTION. Power for the single seat ultralight version of the aircraft are engines up to 40 HP. The two seat version uses engines of 50 to 60 HP like the HKS twin cylinder, gear drive aircraft engine.
