There are many causes of joint and muscle pain that are fairly easy to identify. You might work out too vigorously, or not warm up eough before exercising. You might lift, pull or push something too heavy. You might overuse a joint or muscle by doing the same movement repetitively, causing strain or wear. Bursitis and tendinitis fit in this category. You can also expect to feel muscle and joint pain if you have a fairly common, temporary illness like a the flu, pneumonia, or a severe cold, or an infection somewhere in your system. But this video will focus more "mysterious" reasons for joint and muscle pain that are more complicated to diagnose. Arthritis is one of those. There are more than 100 different kinds of arthritis, and some forms can happen at any age. Most people are familiar with the most common form, known as osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis causes inflammation of the joints, but the discomfort can often feel like it's coming from nearby muscles. Gout is a another painful arthritic condition that usually attacks the big toe and other small joints. Gout is caused by an irregularity in your body's chemistry that raises the amount of uric acid in the blood. Deposits of crystals grow in and around joints. It can often be controlled with medication and changes in diet. Rheumatoid arthritis, like osteoarthritis, it is a chronic, inflammatory condition that causes pain in the joints. But it is an autoimmune disorder, meaning your immune system attacks your own body snd therefore can affect many other tissues and organs. Rheumatoid arthritis causes widespread pain and discomfort in those who have it. Lupus is another immune disorder that causes unexplained joint muscle pain. Lupus can affect your skin, kidneys, blood cells, heart and lungs in various ways. Symptoms of lupus include shortness of breath, chest pain, dry eyes, headaches, confusion and memory loss. There can also be skin lesions and rashes, and skin discolorations in the fingers, Nerve damage, especially in your spinal column, can cause pain that "radiates" to distant parts of your body and feels like muscle or joint discomfort. A condition called sciatica occurs when there's a problem with the sciatic nerve, which runs from your back down to your lower extremities. When the sciatic nerve is injured, the pain can feel like it's happening in the buttocks, legs or feet. Other relatively uncommon diseases and conditions that cause joint and muscle pain could include the following. Fibromyalgia causes chronic pain, stiffness, and tenderness of the muscles, tendons, and joints. Fibromyalgia pain can range from mild to severe. Lyme disease, which is transmitted through tick bites, includes a rash followed by fever, joint and muscular pain, and headaches. Rocky Mountain spotted fever is another disease you get from a tick bite. One of its classic symptoms is muscular pain. Trichinosis or roundworm is a health threat we don't think much about these days. But it causes muscle pain associated with breathing, chewing, or using large muscles.

A lot of foods aid in removal of the pain (garlic, ginger, turmeric), but lots of them also worsen the issue. IN CASE OF JOINT PAIN, AVOID THESE: RED AND PROCESSED MEAT Both have chemical purine and nitrite that make pain and inflammation worse. These foods also have toxins called glycation end products AGEs and they make inflammation more serious. A 2014 study of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences said that red meat glycan develops more inflammation and progress of cancer. Another study of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition made a link between red meat and inflammation markers. Replace the red processed meat with veggies and fruits. SUGARS AND ARTIFICIAL SWEETS. Too much sugar makes more AGEs and inflammation. Sugar triggers cytokines, the inflammation agent triggers. Also, the sugar causes weight gain and pressure on every joint. Also, avoid sodas and sweet drinks. A study of 2014, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition said regularly eating these things makes rheumatoid arthritis in women. Avoid the sodas, sweets, cereals with sugar, snacks, punches, pastries and candies. As healthy options consider stevia, honey or molasses. DAIRY. They worsen the pain because they have high amount of the protein causer of inflammation. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine said this same protein also irritates surrounding joint tissue. That pain is also linked to saturated fats in dairy (cheese, milk, butter). Replace the pasteurized milk with almond, soy milk, tofu, margarine or similar. CORN OIL. This oil is full of omega 6 acids that are harmful for us. The Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism stated in one study that more omega 6 acids make more inflammation. Such foods are salad dressings, grapeseed and safflower oil, peanut, soy. Do not remove the omega 6 fully, it is still needed but in moderation. Eat more omega 3 acids of olive oil, flaxseed, nuts and pumpkin seeds. GRAINS AND REFINED FLOUR. Due to high glycemic index they trigger more AGEs and inflammation. Nutrients study published that daily eating wheat items and grain cereals can develop autoimmune diseases chronically. Such grains have little B vitamin and have empty calories. Eating them daily means more risk of diseases like heart issues, diabetes and even cancer. Replace the pasta, white flour, white rice, white bread with coconut/almond/whole grain/brown rice. EGGS. Eating them regularly means more pain and swelling in joints. The yolk in the egg makes inflammation since it has arachidonic acid that makes prostaglandins (causers of inflammation). They also have saturated fats, harmful too. For breakfast, at least remove the yolk and have just the whites. WHEY PROTEINS. The casein and gluten make the inflammation serious. The casein makes uric acid inside us. Too much of this acid inflames the joints and other parts too. This is called gout and can be serious up to the point of damage to the joints. Those sensitive to gluten foods can have chronic problem with this. A study of the Journal Nutrition Biochemistry, 2013, was said gluten free foods aid in inflammation reducing, adiposity and insulin resistance. Opt for the healthy options like lean proteins (beans, seeds, nuts) and less whey. REFINED SALT. This is the table salt we use daily. It is full of additives and chemicals that impair fluid balance inside us. Also, this salt has no natural minerals like phosphorus or silicon. Limit this salt use and you will keep all the calcium needed for healthy bones, against fractures or osteoporosis even. Eat it in minimal doses or buy Himalayan pink salt or sea salt. Also, avoid junk food – it is too salty. MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE FOODS. The MSG additive makes better flavor in store bought foods like frozen snacks, chips, frozen dinner, Chinese food, salad dressing and soups. It is especially bad for those with rheumatoid arthritis. Eat fresh and natural, homemade foods. Avoid the aspartame foods too, like artificial sweeteners. BEER. Too much alcohol impacts the joints first. Those having beer often and too much, have worse joint health. the purines of it turn to uric acid and this inflames the joints. Beer also has gluten in it and those with fragile joints must avoid it all the time.

Common Conditions Of The Thumb - Everything You Need To Know - Dr. Nabil Ebraheim
Educational video describing injury conditions of the thumb.. Many different conditions can affect the normal function of the thumb. It is important to recognize the most common conditions with appropriate treatment can be given. 1-Stenosing tenosynovitis (trigger thumb). One of the most common abnormalities of the hand associated with painful triggering or locking of the thumb. When the patient tries to straighten the thumb, the nodule jams beneath the pulley proximally. 2-Extensor pollicis longus tendon The EPL tendon is responsible for the thumb’s distal interphalangeal joint. When a rupture occurs, the patient will experience loss of thumb extension and this typically occurs due to fracture of the distal radius. 3-Entrapment of the posterior interosseous branch of the radial nerve The posterior interosseous nerve is a continuation from the radial nerve and runs through the forearm. The nerve passes through the supinator muscle of the forearm, found on the outside of the elbow. The nerve becomes entrapped at the proximal edge of the supinator. Injury of the nerve may also be associated with fractures or dislocations of the radial head or the elbow joint. The patient will be able to perform wrist extension, but no finger extension. Patient with a proximal radial nerve injury will lose wrist extension and finger extension including the thumb. 4-Unable to do OK sign The anterior interosseous nerve branches from the median nerve just below the elbow and supplies the deep muscles on the front of the forearm. Typically there will be weakness of the long flexor muscle of the thumb (flexor pollicis longus) and the deep flexor muscles of the index and middle fingers. 5-Injury to the ulnar nerve (Froment’s sign) Cubital tunnel syndrome occurs due to compression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow. As a result of cubital tunnel syndrome, the patient is unable to cross or abduct the fingers. When pinching a piece of paper between the thumb and index finger, the thumb IP joint will flex if the adductor pollicis muscle is weak. 6-Rheumatoid arthritis of the thumb Inflammation or irritation causing pain, swelling, weakness and over time, loss of the normal shape and alignment of the joint. This deformity can lead to the loss of the ability to grip, grasp and pinch. 👍 8 Hand EXERCISES to Ease ARTHRITIS Pain
With the increased use of the hand, arthritis pain increases as well. For instance, if you’re working in the kitchen or typing on a keyboard you’ll witness sharp pain. Many people also lose the power in their hands.Over time this weakness can make it difficult to perform the regular everyday tasks like opening toothpaste. What makes this disease especially unpleasant is the fact that when it hits the joints of the hands because it results in numbness and pain. We strongly feel that natural home treatments are the way to go. There are several specially designed hand exercises that can improve the hand’s flexibility, extend their range of motion and ease arthritis pain. They’re very simple and noninvasive. Soaking your hands in warm water or dipping them in warm paraffin wax is a great way to reduce pain before you perform the exercises. You can even try performing some of the exercises with your hands submerged in warm water or while you’re in a heated pool. This way you’re gently exercising your joints and muscles. The buoyancy of the water supports and lessens stress on the joints, enabling you to move your hands more easily. Water can also act as resistance to help build muscle strength. Make A Fist A really easy exercise you can do just about anywhere. It’s best to use it when you’re feeling stiffness in this area. This exercise is fairly easy to do. Start by keeping your right hand straight. Then, turn your hand into a fist and place your thumb out of the fist. Note that you shouldn’t be squeezing your hand – be relaxed. Open your hand slowly until each of your fingers is straight. Perform 10 reps. After that, repeat the procedure with your left hand. Thumb Bend Start by holding your hand straight up and bendingyour thumb in the direction of the palm. Stretch it as much as you can and try to reach the pinky finger with the thumb. If you can’t do it, don’t stress yourself out. Just stretch it as much as you can. Stay in that position for a couple of seconds and place the thumb in its initial position in the end. 10 repetitions with both hands will be enough. Finger Bands Using the same position as the first exercise, straighten your left hand. Try gently bending your thumb in the direction of your palm. Remain in this position for a few seconds.Bring your thumb in the initial position. Then, bend your index finger in the same direction, wait for a few seconds before straightening it. Repeat this with every finger. Once you’re finished with your left hand, do the same thing with your right hand. Make An O Start by straightening your left hand. Then, direct all your fingers inward so they can touch, making an “O”. Remain in this position for several seconds, before straightening your fingers. Do at least three reps, using both hands. This exercise is perfect in the moments your fingers and hand feel stiff or achy. Table Bend Start with your left hand, putting your pinky close to the table. Point your thumb up and bend the rest of your fingers making an L formation.Stay in this position for a couple of seconds, before straightening your fingers. Do 10 reps with both hands. Finger Lift Start by putting left hand on a table with its palm down, keeping it flattened. Try lifting each finger off the table carefully starting with your thumb. Keep the finger in the same position for two seconds, before lowering it down. Perform the same procedure with every finger from the left and right hand. Fan And Fist Start by holding your hand in a neutral position, keeping your knuckles straight.Gradually and carefully spread your fingers as much as you can (something like a fan when it’s opening up). Then, try making a fist. Remain in each of these positions for about five seconds. Do the exercise two times a day with both hands. Wrist Stretch Using your wrists, you can eliminate the stiffness and ease the pain. Keep your right arm out, with your palm facing down. Then, press it gently with the left hand until you feel that your arm and wrist are stretched.Stay in that position for a couple of seconds. Do 10 reps with both hands. The main joint of the shoulder, commonly referred to as "THE shoulder joint", is the joint between the head of the humerus - the upper arm bone, and the glenoid cavity of the scapula -the shoulder blade. This is a ball-and-socket type of joint. Shoulder arthritis refers to loss of cartilage on the surface of the humeral head and the glenoid of the shoulder joint. The two bones rub against each other and produce pain, stiffness and difficulty moving an arm. Types of shoulder arthritis include: Osteoarthritis - also called degenerative joint disease - is the "wear and tear" condition of the joint, commonly due to old age. Osteoarthritis is characterized by loss of cartilage, bone spurring and NO major inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis – is a result of inflammation of the synovium - the membrane that encloses the joint. Inflammation brings in the cells of the immune system, whose inflammatory chemicals damage and destroy the joint. It is not clear how rheumatoid arthritis starts but genetic predisposition together with infection of the joint are likely to be among the causes. Rotator cuff arthropathy or cuff tear arthropathy is shoulder arthritis AS A RESULT and IN A SETTING of rotator cuff tears. Rotator cuff muscles hold the ball and the socket together and prevent the humeral head from moving out of the socket when the person raises an arm. In people with torn rotator cuff, the head of the humerus moves upwards and rub onto the acromion. This causes damages to the covering cartilage and eventually arthritis. Combination of cuff tear and arthritis is a devastating condition that seriously impairs functions of the shoulder joint. Post-traumatic arthritis – is arthritis that develops after physical injury to the joint. Chondrolysis - sudden loss of cartilage that happens occasionally after a shoulder surgery, commonly seen in association with infusion of local anesthetics into the joint for pain management.

5 Types of Shoulder Arthritis
Source: https://www.epainassist.com a. Osteoarthritis b. Rheumatoid Arthritis c. Gout d. Pseudogout e. Septic Arthritis a. Osteoarthritis of Shoulder Joint Shoulder Joint Osteoarthritis is a most common type of shoulder joint inflammatory disease. Osteoarthritis is often seen in elderly patients. Osteoarthritis causes degeneration of shoulder joint articulating cartilages, rim of the glenoid cavity and ligaments. Cartilages will slowly get worned out. Eventually lack of cartilages results in joint with bone on bone. Bone spurs are observed over humerus within the joint and adjacent to capsule outside the joint. Bone spurs are bony projections also known as osteophytes. Osteophytes cause irritation of synovial membrane, capsule and ligament resulting in severe pain. Shoulder Joint Osteoarthritis Is Associated With Irritation Or Inflammation Of Ligaments And Rim Of Glenoid Cavity. Shoulder Joint Osteoarthritis Is Associated With Tendon Inflammation And Causes Rotator Cuff Pain. Shoulder Joint Is Very Painful To Touch And Movements. Pain Does Respond To Anti-Inflammatory Medications. Pain Is Continuous In Advanced Disease and May Need Advanced Surgical Treatment. Joint Movements Are Restricted During Initial Phase And Later In Advanced Stage. Patient Is Unable To Carry Weights On Diseased Arm And Do Movements Beyond 20 To 25 Degree Rotation. b. Rheumatoid Arthritis of Shoulder Joint Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease of shoulder joint. Soft tissue inflammation of capsule and synovial membrane causes thickening of capsule and synovial membrane as well as severe pain. Inflamed synovial membrane secretes excessive amount of synovial fluid resulting in joint effusion and swelling. Rheumatoid Arthritis causes severe pain and often pain is associated with mild fever. Pain is secondary to damaged cartilage and irritation of ligaments and tendon. Rheumatoid Arthritis also causes Inflammation of ligaments and tendon. Severe case may result in partial tear of ligament and tendon. In advanced stage of rheumatoid arthritis, shoulder joint often partially dislocate during rapid movement or rotation of shoulder joint. Subluxation is partial dislocation. Subluxation is either anterior or posterior. Subluxation causes severe sudden pain, which last for several hours. Pain does not respond to NSAIDs and opioids. c. Gout Normal shoulder joint movement is painless. Shoulder joint of patient suffering with gout is extremely painful. Pain may last on and often for few days. Gout is caused by inflammation resulting from uric acid deposits over synovial membrane, cartilage and rim of glenoid cavity. Uric acid causes inflammation of synovium, articulating cartilage and rim of glenoid socket. Pain is spread over front and back of the shoulder joint. Palpation, pressure and movement of shoulder joint result in severe pain. Tender Painful Swelling is observed over Shoulder Joint. Joint movements such as flexion, extension and rotation are extremely painful during the active period of gout. d. Pseudogout Pseudogout is rare and is a painful condition of the shoulder joint. Symptoms are often similar to gout. Calcium Pyro Phosphate crystals are widely spread in shoulder joint. Crystals are deposited over articulating cartilage, synovial membrane, joint capsule and glenoid cavity. Calcium Pyro Phosphate crystals causes inflammation of cartilage and synovial membrane. Inflammation follows swelling of cartilage and synovial membrane as well as increased secretion of synovial fluid. Pseudogout is diagnosed following lab study of synovial fluid. Crystals of Calcium Pyrophosphate are lineal long. Crystals are embedded in the surface of cartilage and synovial membrane. Crystals are also observed in Shoulder joint capsule and the edge of the humerus within the shoulder joint. Pain caused by pseudogout is often spread over front and back of shoulder joint. Pain is severe in the morning and gets less painful later in the day. Shoulder joint movement is restricted in the morning. Pain becomes less severe as the joint movements are improved during the day. Swelling is observed over front and back of the shoulder joint. Swelling is soft mostly caused by increased secretion of synovial fluid within the joint. e. Septic Arthritis Septic Arthritis is caused by infection of shoulder joint resulting in collection of abscess (pus) within the joint. Septic Arthritis can also be caused by penetrating injury or infection from other source spreads to joint through blood. Joint movements are painful. Joint capsule is inflamed. Movement of shoulder joint irritates.Inflame joint capsule causes severe intractable pain. Skin over the joint is red and hot indicates underlying infection and inflammation. Patient guards and protect the shoulder joint. Patients avoid any movement of shoulder joint. Shoulder joint muscles are contracted or in spasm to prevent shoulder joint movement, which result in severe pain.

What is Rheumatoid Arthritis? | RA Awareness Day 2017
The 2nd of February is Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Day and 3D4Medical made a video explaining more about the condition. Find more info at: http://rheum4us.org/what-is-rheumatoid-awareness-day/ Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where a person's immune system attacks and targets the healthy connective tissue surrounding joints in the body. It affects approximately 1% of the population. Rheumatoid Arthritis most commonly affects individuals aged between 30 to 60, however onset can occur at any age. Women have more than double the chance of developing Rheumatoid Arthritis. Other risk Factors include having a close relative with Rheumatoid Arthritis and smoking. When the immune system attacks the connective tissue surrounding a joint, this causes inflammation. Patients experience swollen, stiff, and painful joints, which can feel warm. Symptoms are worst in the morning and after periods of inactivity. The most common joints affected are the small joints of the hands, feet and ankles - however larger joints may also be affected. Symptoms usually occur symmetrically on both sides of the body. This initial inflammation can lead to long term joint damage and joint deformities, so early management is key. People living with Rheumatoid arthritis experience “Flare Ups” of more severe symptoms which can last from a few days up to a month. Rheumatoid Arthritis is mostly managed with medications targeting the immune system, which aim to decrease the inflammation and damage to the joints. Other medications are given for initial symptom relief however these do not combat disease progression. Intramuscular injections can provide relief from symptoms, especially during flare ups. If the condition is allowed to progress, it can lead to permanent joint damage consisting of cartilage destruction and bone erosion. Depending on the severity of the joint damage a patient may choose to avail of joint replacement surgery which serves to ease pain and increase joint mobility. Rheumatoid Arthritis is known to cause fatigue - however, keeping active is shown to benefit patients. Regular low impact exercise can strengthen muscles and keep connective tissue healthy providing better protection against flare ups. Remedies And Cures For Rheumatoid Arthritis
The hallmark joint and muscle inflammation associated with arthritis commonly results in pain. This condition affects millions of women and men throughout the world and can even start to develop in children. You can conquer arthritis by applying new management techniques and seeing which works best. This article will demonstrate several ways you can fight back against arthritis. http://a2buys.com/Rheumatoid-Arthritis-Natural-Treatment.html While it may be hard, it is very important to exercise regularly to fight your arthritis. If you fail to exercise the joints, it is like that they will grow weak, which can exacerbate arthritis. Take part in exercises that encourage flexibility, as this will help in the range of motion your body can achieve. http://a2buys.com/Rheumatoid-Arthritis-Natural-Treatment.html Some studies indicate that unlike with other medical issues, alcohol consumption does not increase problems with arthritis. Some studies, in fact, suggest that some arthritis symptoms may be ameliorated by a modest alcohol intake. Lay down the clipper on your thigh, then press down using the heal on your hand. You will not have to use a finger that is sensitive, it will be easier to do. Before immediately assuming you need surgery for knee pain, see how a brace improves its function first. A good brace may help reduce your pain and swelling. You can keep the knee brace on while you are asleep. Be sure of what you need to look for when you are dealing with arthritis. This will benefit you in early diagnosis and treatment. If you think you have the symptoms of arthritis, discuss your condition with your doctor for the best remedies and management. If health is an issue, consider implementing a weight loss and fitness routine. Weight can be a major factor in arthritis pain. When you lose some weight, you will lose some pain. Dropping your weight by a few pounds can bring relief to your aching, overburdened joints. Laugh as much as possible. This helps alleviate stress no matter how you do it. People suffering from arthritis often feel the burden of pain lifted by a good laugh. If you want to lessen the intense pain and swelling of arthritis, you need to stop smoking. It has been shown through studies that non smokers have less inflammation in joints if they suffer from arthritis. If you are a smoker, consider throwing the habit away! It could alleviate some of your symptoms. Doctors are able to give you medication that can help if you're having trouble stopping on your own. People with arthritis used to be advised to stay away from alcohol. More recent studies, however, have found that moderate alcohol consumption does not aggravate the symptoms of arthritis. Some of that research even suggests that alcohol may actually reduce arthritis symptoms. Some studies indicate that by maintaining or increasing your muscle strength through strength-training techniques, you can reduce the pain of your arthritis. Moderate to high-volume strength training can boost your physical capabilities, emotional condition, and functionality over time. Although strength training does not produce immediate results, it is an excellent long-term plan for combating arthritic pain. Taking a warm bath or shower can do wonders for arthritis symptoms. The heat and humidity will ease some of the tenseness from your muscles and your tendons, thereby relieving your pain and allowing you to relax. Moist heating pads can help, too. These can be found at various drug stores, and you can wet them prior to turning them on. If you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, you might feel guilty because you can't do what you used to. Whenever possible, just try to do things that are less taxing when your arthritis symptoms are particularly troublesome as a way of alleviating your guilt. Make sure to get adequate rest, even if you have to take naps. If you find yourself taking daily naps to get sufficient rest, you might as well make it a deliberate and scheduled habit so that you are best prepared to manage your arthritic conditions. As discussed in the beginning of this article, it can be a struggle to find an simple way to remedy your arthritis. This article should help you understand the basis of what you need to know about arthritis. Treatments and therapies are available for treating various arthritis symptoms. http://a2buys.com/Rheumatoid-Arthritis-Natural-Treatment.html

2013 Atlanta - Muscle, Joint & Nerve Pain in Scleroderma Patients - Dr. Thomas Medsger
Although scleroderma patients frequently have joint pain (anthralgia), coexisting disorders also can cause anthralgias. These disorders include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Sjogren syndrome, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism and others. The pattern of join pain, physical examination findings and laboratory tests results help to identify these conditions. The treatment approach will differ, depending on the underlying cause. Muscle pain (myalgia) and nerve pain (neuralgia) are distinctly uncommon in scleroderma patients. Here also, the causes need to be identified, if possible, and treated accordingly. This workshop wil laddress how scleroderma and non-scleroderma causes of anthralgia, myalgia and neuralgia can be differentiated and treated. Presented by Dr. Thomas Medsger. Hand Arthritis Stretches & Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo
Hand arthritis is pretty common, and it can be very debilitating. Since the joints in the hand are small, you don’t have to do much to relieve the pain, you just have to keep them moving. These stretches and exercises should help your hand arthritis feel better. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at: http://www.askdoctorjo.com/hand-arthritis You can set your arm on a table or flat surface to relax it, or if you don’t have anything available, you can prop your elbow up on your knee or thigh. Start off with a fist and warm up your wrist. With your palm side facing down, move your fist up and down at the wrist for flexion and extension. Now move it side to side in a radial and ulnar deviation movement. Ten in each direction should be fine since this is just to warm up the muscles. Next, you will keep your fingers straight, and take your thumb and touch each finger in the middle of your hand, and then spread them all back apart. You can do three times back and forth. Now bend your fingers at the joint closest to your wrist, still keeping the fingers as straight as you can. Bend down and back up gliding the tendons up and down. Now move to the next joint down the fingers. This time open your fingers, and then curl the top part of your fingers down for the stretch. Finally, go to the last joint farthest down the finger. You might have to hold onto the near part of your finger so just the last joint moves. Just start off with ten of each of these with a continuous movement. For the last stretch, start with all your fingers close together, and then spread them out as far as you can, just like you are fanning them out. You don’t have to do a lot of these exercises since these are small joints. 2-3 minutes, 2-3 times a day should be plenty. Muscle Relaxants and Neuromodulators Don't Help With Pain In RA.
Nancy Walsh writing in MedPage Today reported, "Muscle relaxants and neuromodulators offered little pain relief for rheumatoid arthritis patients and cannot currently be recommended, according to two Cochrane reviews." The first "review of six trials involving muscle relaxant use in rheumatoid arthritis patients found that in none of the trials was there patient-reported pain relief of at least 30%, which was the primary outcome measure," while a second review of four trials involving neuromodulators found that two trials did not meet the primary pain relief endpoint; a third did not show significant improvement over one month; and a fourth found improvements in morning pain but no difference in pain intensity.

7 Treatment Options for Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
7 Treatment Options for Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis 1. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) Upon receiving a juvenile rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis, many patients will be prescribed medications to help them cope with the often painful condition. The first and most accessible type of medication prescribed to these individuals is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, otherwise known as NSAIDs. As the name suggests, NSAIDs are designed to alleviate the symptoms associated with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis by reducing inflammation, in this case of the joints. Many NSAIDs are available over the counter, meaning they don’t even require a prescription. Examples include ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve). Side effects, which are generally minimal, include nausea and issues with the liver. 2. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) Should a young patient dealing with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis require something more powerful to combat the pain associated with this condition, their family doctor may prescribe disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, or DMARDs. Examples of DMARDs include methotrexate (Trexall) and sulfasalazine (Azulfidine). Sometimes a physician will encourage their patient to take DMARDs in addition to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. And while DMARDs are generally more potent than NSAIDs, the side effects are fairly similar: upset stomach and, should they be taken in excess, liver issues. 3. Tumor necrosis factor blockers (TNFs) Tumor necrosis factor blockers are often prescribed by doctors to patients suffering from the effects of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. That’s because TNFs can effectively restrict many of the symptoms associated with the condition, from stiffness in the morning hours to the late-day pain of swollen joints. Unfortunately, tumor necrosis factor blockers have more significant side effects than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which can cause nausea in some patients. Unlike NSAIDs, TNFs increase the chance that a patient will suffer from even more substantial health problems, including cancers like lymphoma. For this reason, doctors may not prescribe TNFs unless the case of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is considered particularly serious and painful. 4. Immune system suppressants You could hardly blame someone for wondering why on earth a physician would prescribe medications designed to actually suppress the activity of a person’s immune system if they’re fighting a painful condition like juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. But there’s a good reason physicians turn to these types of medication: because they can effectively limit the chance that the immune system of a juvenile rheumatoid arthritis patient will attack healthy cells and intensify the condition. There are a number of prevalent immune system suppressants, including abatacept (Orencia), rituximab (Rituxin), anakinra (Kineret) and tocilizumab (Actemra). Like TNFs, they do come with some significant potential side effects, including general infection to cancer. 5. Corticosteroids A far more potent way to counteract the symptoms of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis involves using corticosteroid medications, such as prednisone. Corticosteroids are often prescribed by a doctor while their patient waits for disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs to take effect. Should corticosteroid medications be prescribed, chances are they will be in use for only a short time. This is because these drugs have been shown to cause growth difficulties and increase the chances of infection. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis patients using corticosteroids will receive these drugs orally or through an injection into a problematic joint. 6. Physical therapy Many older adults struggling with rheumatoid arthritis find that physical therapy can help in alleviating joint and muscle pain. The situation is no different for those dealing with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, which affects children under age 17 — physical therapists and occupational therapists have a variety of exercises that can improve range of motion, enhance muscle tone, and help young patients overcome restricted flexibility and reduce pain and swelling. Additionally, a physical therapist or occupational therapist may provide a child with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis with protective equipment or exercise equipment that can help them build strength when at home; for example, joint supports and splints can help protect painful joints and improve overall functionality. Knee Arthritis Stretches & Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo
These knee arthritis stretches and exercises are simple to do and should provide some relief from knee arthritis pain. They are also great for keeping your knees nice and fit. Read Doctor Jo's full blog post about this at http://www.askdoctorjo.com/content/knee-arthritis-stretches-exercises The first stretch is for your calf muscles. Start off with your legs out in front of you. Keep the leg you want to stretch out in front of you. Take a stretch strap, dog leash, belt, or towel and wrap it around the ball of your foot. Relax your foot, and pull the strap towards you stretching your calf muscle. You should feel the stretch under your leg. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, and do three of them. The next stretch is for the hamstrings. Keep your leg that you want to stretch out in front of you. Try to keep your back straight and just bend at your hips. Keep your leg straight and pull your toes towards you to get an extra stretch. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and repeat three times. The last stretch is for your quad muscles. This time you will lie on your stomach to stretch. Wrap the strap or dog leash around your ankle, and then lie on your stomach. Bring the strap up and around your shoulder so you are comfortable. Then pull the strap towards you bringing the lower leg towards your bottom. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds doing three of them. Now we will move on to the exercises. The first exercise is going to be a quad set. Put your leg straight out in front of you again. You can use a towel roll underneath your knee as a target. Activate your quad muscle by squeezing it and pull your toes toward you at the same time. This will push your knee into the ground. Try to hold this for 5-10 seconds and do 10 of them. Next you will do a short arc quad (SAQ). For this, you will use a foam roll or a rolled up beach towel. You want something big so you have a good bend in your knee. Prop your leg over the roll with your knee on the roll. Try to keep your knee on the roll the whole time, and then lift your foot in the air until your leg is straight. If you pull your toes towards you at the end, this will help activate all the muscles in the leg. Try not to go fast because then you are only using momentum. Go slow and controlled with your movements. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights. For the next exercise, you will sit in a chair. This one is called a long arc quad (LAQ). This is similar to the SAQ where you want to go slow and controlled, and then bring your leg up straight out in front of you. Slowly come back down. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights. Now you are going to stand up for the last exercises. For the hamstring exercise standing up, you want to keep the top part of your leg as straight as possible in line with your body. It might try to come forward if your muscles are tight, but try to keep it down. Slowly bring your foot back behind you, like you are trying to kick your bottom. Make sure you are going slow and controlled with these. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights. The last one is for calf strengthening. With your feet about shoulder width apart, and holding onto something for balance if you need to, come up on your toes bringing your heels off the ground, and slowly come back down. If that becomes easy, you can do this one foot at a time. Start off with ten and work your way up to 20-25.
