We are going to talk about headaches in a relationship to doing Keto and Intermittent Fasting. This is really a hypoglycemic type of issue or the low blood sugar situation, your cells have not yet adapted to running on ketones, and you’re still running on glucose. If you implement intermittent fasting and you try to go in a long period of time, it drops the sugar. The problem is that low blood sugars add a tremendous amount of stress to the brain, central nervous system and the nerves overall. In fact, the brain is the first organ to be affected by low blood sugars because they depend on glucose. There is an alternative fuel called ketones but if you don’t know how to do it you are going to run in glucose and if you implement intermittent fasting, you are gonna crash and burn. Headaches are very common symptoms of hypoglycemia but to really know if your headaches are really connected to blood sugars, all you have to do as soon as you start getting headaches is to start to consume some protein because that should instantly improve your headaches and if it doesn’t then it could be another source. The solution to the headaches is to realize that it is a blood sugar thing and go into this more gradually. For example you are going this and eating twice a day and you are getting headaches, add another meal because you are not ready to go to 2 meals a day. If you are doing 3 meals a day maybe you might really need to add more protein. But again here’s the problem, medically speaking what they’ll do to hypoglycemia is they tell you to add more snacks like 5 to 6 meals a day which is a big mistake even though you’ll feel better, you’ll never correct the problem. You might go “wow, I had some fruit, protein, and I feel better” but if you are not working towards running your body on ketones you are still going to have the blood sugar situation because as soon as you eat, you are going to spike the insulin, it is gonna come down. Primarily because it is the frequency of eating that keeps the insulin very high and if you are trying to fix this problem, you are going to work towards going longer and longer without snacking. Snacking is just very quick fix, it is a temporary situation but we want to go longer without eating in general. The other bad advice would be to add some candy. Intermittent fasting reduces inflammation instantly lowering the need for cortisol. Hey guys! In this video we are going to talk about intermittent fasting and your adrenals. So the question is, should you do intermittent fasting if you are an adrenal body type or if you have weakness in your adrenal or if you have high cortisol, etc. Now, if you do a search on this you are gonna be told that you shouldn’t do intermittent fasting if you have adrenal weakness. So I disagree, let me explain why. Normally, when you do intermittent fasting your blood sugars come down. But if you have a pre-existing hypoglycemia or a low blood sugar situation, what will happen is the adrenals will work a little bit harder to stabilize your blood sugars because one of the purposes of the adrenals is to increase cortisol when your blood sugars starts to get low and counter this drop in blood sugar and that’s why another name for cortisol is glucocorticoids because it’s a glucose hormone to help release glucose from the system and help normalize blood sugar. So it is a protective mechanism against the blood sugars that go to low. So if you have hypoglycemia and you do intermittent fasting, you might notice symptoms of low blood sugar and as you transition into fat burning which could take 3 days, a week or maybe two weeks. But that is just easy to solve, you just have to add more fat, add more vegetable during the meal, moderate protein and that’s gonna carry you to the next meal. But as far as intermittent fasting being bad for the adrenals, that’s not true because the adrenals are just doing their job. Just like if you have an infection, the adrenal glands would have to stimulate the white blood cells to fight off the infection. Is that bad? No, it’s just a normal function of cortisol. I mean if you exercise for example and you stimulate testosterone, is that bad? No, it is a normal thing that happens when you exercise, it stimulates certain hormones. Now if you are an adrenal body type or if you have an adrenal fatigue, I do recommend you do intermittent fasting because intermittent fasting will take a tremendous amount of stress, other stress, and oxidative stress from your body and it helps decrease inflammation. So right there, the need for cortisol to be released is a lot less because you are not gonna have the inflammation, because this is gonna be very therapeutic for inflammation. Think about it - your meds are supposed to lower blood sugars and when you fix the true problem and things normalize and you still are taking this sugar lowering drug - it can push it below normal. The thing to do is get with your doctor and have them adjust your meds because chances are you don’t need as much. If you are off the medication and your blood glucose (sugar) levels are too low (60s) BUT you feel fine, you may in fact be fine because when you do ketogenic diet and IF your body is no longer running on glucose, it's running on ketones which do not involve so much glucose. However, if you feel weird if your sugars are low, it could be adrenals (cortisol or adrenaline). In this case, go at this more gradual and not too fast so your body can really adapt over time. Hey guys, I recently have a question from someone who was a diabetic, they have a high blood sugars, and they did ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting and then ended up having low blood sugars, hypoglycemia. They are a bit concerned with this complication and side effect from doing ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. No.1, the purpose of the medication that you are taking as a diabetic is to lower the blood sugars. If you are still taking the medications and you are doing ketogenic diet and IF you could end up with excessively low blood sugars because you don’t even need the medications, or you don’t need as much. Ketogenic diet and Intermittent Fasting decrease the need for diabetic medication, get with your doctor, adjust the dosage, reduce it or maybe you don’t need it at all. If your blood sugars is 100 or less, you don’t need the medication. Let’s say for example you are off with the medication and it is still too low but you feel fine, that is not a problem because when you do ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting you will actually have the new normal because you are not running your body on sugar anymore so your body will adapt and you can get by with a lot less 80, 70 or even 60 and feel fine because your body is not running in sugar anymore. But if you feel bad, if you feel jittery and if you feel your blood sugars are a problem, it can also be symptoms of the adrenal gland that is trying to compensate in bringing your sugars up but it can’t and then you’ll notice a symptoms of more of the spike of either cortisol or adrenaline and that could be why you are feeling that. If that’s the case then just basically go about it a little bit more gradual. Instead of going one-meal-a-day, do two meals, instead of doing 2 meals, do 3 meals no snacks adding a lot of greens, b vitamins, potassium supplements so you can actually correct this situation a lot better so you can go longer without meals.
