She takes inhalers, inhaled corticosteroids and a regiment of medications each day to manage this chronic disease. However, Bronchial Thermoplasty is a breakthrough therapy that is showing excellent results for those with severe Asthma. On March 15th, 2013, Dr. Peter Hahn and Dr. Srinivas Mummadi performed the first Bronchial Thermoplasty on Patricia in Oregon at Tuality Healthcare. She will go through three treatments separated three weeks apart. Each treatment will focus on a different section of the lung starting with the right lower lobe and ending at the upper sections. The procedure involves a catheter inserted into the airway through the use of a bronchoscope. The catheter expands and doctors apply thermal energy radio waves to the smooth muscles in the airways. The energy breaks apart the constricted smooth muscle mass reducing the airways ability to constrict, which happens during Asthma attacks. Watch this video to see this groundbreaking new procedure for patients suffering with Asthma. Dr. Mummadi was assisted in the procedure by Dr. Peter Hahn, his senior colleague in the Tuality Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine Clinic. Dr. Mummadi joined Tuality Healthcare in 2011 from the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Hahn joined Tuality in 2010 from the Mayo Clinic.

Childhood Asthma May Increase Risks of Shingles
Nearly 1 million incidences of herpes zoster, which is also known as shingles, occur every year in the U.S., with an estimated one-third of all adults affected by age 80. Despite its prevalence, particularly between ages 50 and 59, it is still unclear why some individuals will develop shingles, and others will not. In a population-based study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (JACI), Mayo Clinic researchers build on their previous research from 2013, which linked asthma in childhood with an increased risk of shingles. “Asthma represents one of the five most burdensome chronic diseases in the U.S., affecting up to 17 percent of the population,” says lead author Young Juhn, M.D., who is a general academic pediatrician and asthma epidemiologist at the Mayo Clinic Children’s Research Center. “The effect of asthma on the risk of infection or immune dysfunction might very well go beyond the airways.”
