You may think that it is ‘how do I find new clients?’ and that is of course important. But first you must take it back even further and ask yourself this fundamental question: Who is my ideal Client? To be effective it is essential to be able to match your advertising and promotion as closely as possible to the person you want to attract. You must try to enter the conversation they are having in their head about their care requirements and to do this you really need to know your ideal client very well. Let me give you an example. Say you specialise in Dementia Care. Anyone who is not looking for dementia care is of no interest to you whatsoever. Yet you would not believe the number of these homes that advertise or have web sites that say some thing like the following: Headline: XYZ Residential Care Home Text: Welcome to xzy residential home. We are a family run home who have been in business 20 years and are situated in the village of Pleasantville. Xyz is a registered home and complies with all regulations under the Care Standards Act 2000 and the inspectorate body CSCI The home is run by Mr Jollyman, the proprietor and has a full time Registered Manager. We have 25 beds, 6 with ensuite…etc., etc. You get the idea. I will come back to this type of advert/brochure/web site in future ramblings because it is so dreadful there are many lessons to be learned. But firstly can you spot the glaring omission? There is no mention that you specialise in dementia care. The whole thing should be written around the needs, wants and fears of someone looking for a specialist in dementia care. As it stands it is too general and would attract all manner of residential clients, who are of course no interest to you as a dementia care specialist. The whole idea was summed up beautifully by one of the most successful advertising experts ever Claude Hopkins. He said “Your message should single out your prospect like a bell-boy paging a man in a crowded hotel lobby” Who is your real client? In the example above, the real client is not the person with dementia who lives in your care home, but the person who makes the decision about which home the dementia sufferer lives in. This is the person your marketing should be aimed at. This is your real client. So take some time to define your ideal client in great detail. Who are they? What sex are they? What age? Where do they live? What publications do they read? Where do they get their information from? Who are they making the decision on behalf of? A great way to find answer to these questions is to look at your existing residents. Who were their decision makers? Chances are the people you need to attract will be a lot like them. Now check your own promotional material with your newly focussed eye and ask yourself the following searching questions: 1. Does it specifically state the type of clients you want to attract? 2. Does it talk to the wants, needs and fears of the real decision maker? 3. Are you getting it in front of the real decision maker so they know who you are? If not, you are wasting your money and missing valuable opportunities to fill your home with profitable clients. Please give some serious thought to this issue. Get this right and you are well on your way to never having to worry about getting clients again. However, get it wrong by aiming at the wrong people and you are making life very hard for yourself indeed. What I love about the Healthcare Industry is how business goes during the summer months. I find that we tend to become relaxed and kick back, taking it easy for a bit. Which makes sense, specially if you have kids as they are out of school. But in this week’s episode of A Drink With The Hurricane, I’m doing to say DON’T. We have vacations for a reason, this is when you take time to recharge the battery. So use your days for that purpose. If you’re working however, you should be WORKING. Now if you’re a full time Marketing Representative or a Home Care Business Owner who employs a (or multiple) Marketing Rep, how should I spend my time marketing in the field? This is where the importance and need of drop by visits comes in to play. After all, what are we trying to accomplish? We are trying to build a referring relationship with individuals who have the referrals to give. This is something that takes time, and so therefor we have see these folks again and again. How are we to accomplish this week after week, month after month? Well this is a particularly debated topic from marketing company to company. Some marketing companies feel that marketing reps should see 40-50 accounts each week. I couldn’t disagree more. You want to talk about setting someone up for failure, ask them to go to this many accounts and see what happens. If you factor in drive time, office meetings, appointments, and so on, this gives you 10-20 mins to spend in each account. It’s just not enough time to be able to develop a referring relationship with someone. The visit would be quick, essentially asking for a referral and then leaving. I’ve personally recorded interviews I’ve had with social workers, and they do NOT appreciate this at all. Here’s what I suggest you try: Meaningful Conversations – When dropping by for a visit, don’t just ask for a referral, but get to know your contacts. People refer who they Know Like and Trust. If you only ask for referrals, you’re not developing a relationship and chances are you’re not getting the referrals you’re after! Have a Face to Face visit with 1 person for every hour you spend marketing – If you are a Home Care Business Owner doing the marketing yourself for example, dedicate say 20 hours per week to direct referral marketing. With that 20 hours, you should have a meaningful conversation with a Key Contact with in a referral source 20x during that week. If you’re a full time Marketing Rep, working 40 hours, then do this 40x. Plan to visit 15-20 Accounts during the week – In order to accomplish the above tip, we need to do so by seeing multiple key contacts with in a sales account. A SNF, for example, has 7 – 10 key contacts. If you’re going to take the time to drive there, make the most of it and see 3-4 of these key contacts all in one place on one visit. This is “Blanketing The Account”. It helps combat turn over, creates accountability, and helps you to ensure referrals are sent your way. Repetition – If your accounts are well qualified (To find out about qualifying accounts, click HERE) then you need to do this again and again, week after week, month after month. Remember, it takes 8-12 visits before you start getting the referrals you’re after. That’s 2-3 months if you go weekly. The Good News, your competitors give up after 3-5. These are part of the strategies that every coaching client of ours goes through, and you should see the referral numbers they put up! It truly is a perfect example of “Less is More”. We are trying to get individuals to trust you with their patients, and so it’s going to take time. The time we spend in front of them, the better our relationship will be and before long, you’ll be receiving the referrals you’re after. Before you watch this video, I want you to know that although most of my advice will be for women (because I am a woman); I believe many gentlemen may also find some of the information very useful. So, to start, I would like to acknowledge my single beauties out there. One thing that I have noticed for successful, self-sufficient women is that one of the biggest illusions is that we do not need a man. Or at least settle for just anyone. While I agree, never just settle for just anyone. However, sometimes I see successful women have standards that are not long term thinking. When you are in the market for a potential husband, I think it’s best to focus on things like: kindness, drive and flexibility. Kindness is key for me since I was raised in North Carolina – or Real America as I refer to it here living in Miami FL lol. As a child, I was taught to acknowledge people as they walk down the street with a hello and smile, this was an expectation. I was taught to treat everyone with a great degree of care and gentle attention, regardless of their success (or lack thereof), their background and their beliefs. One of the biggest test I would have for men I was dating was to see how they treated the wait staff at restaurants. One time, I went to dinner with a man who insisted we sit in an area where he could see his car from the window and was short with the hostess for needing more time to accommodate this (I can’t make this stuff up). Needless to say, we never had another date. While of course there needs to be chemistry and attraction, sometimes these things can also grow as you get to know someone. My biggest request here is to just make sure you give good guys an attempt. Lately, I have noticed a lot of successful women are attracted to men who are physically impeccable. However, you can look at them and in a second know that there is no way this person would be open to a serious relationship. I even have one friend who is extremely successful who is in love with a man who she knows cheats on her. I guess it brings up the question, why would anyone settle for that? Again, please place the focus on character. The right man will mentally astound you, I promise. For my married gals, like me :) For a successful relationship to work, especially if your spouse is non-medical. I think it is best to focus on them when you get home. It may be tempting to speak about your day, however, what is most important is that your spouse feels loved, needed and important. Ultimately, we need balance and it is not very balancing to finish a 12 hour shift and then go home and talk about those 12 hours for 3 more hours anyways. Use this time to connect, plan the future and find more fun things to do! Alright guys, I hope you have an amazing week! In this week's episode of A Drink With The Hurricane, Steve explains how to market to hospitals with a closed system.  ____ Video Transcript Hi folks, Steve the Hurricane here, and on today's episode of A Drink with the Hurricane, we are going to continue our discussion on hospital marketing. Last week I talked about LinkedIn, the week before I talked about finding out what events they have and today I'm gonna talk about finding out if they offer what you do as part of their hospital system, or if they do it in-house. Why is this important? Sometimes people are like, well Steve, I'm a home care company and if they offer home care, what's the point in me going in there, because they're gonna give all the referrals to themselves? Not necessarily, I got into many closed hospital systems that did not refer private home care because they had their own. The reason why I was able to get in there is the reputation of the agency affiliated with the hospital is usually a poor one. Why? Well think about it, every part of health care is insurance pay, Medicare, AARP, Horizon, Aetna, whatever it is the person. So hospitals are used to dealing with stuff or services that are a benefit as part of an insurance payer source. They have a SNF, home health, hospice, and a private duty. The only part of those four in that system that just been in the hospital itself, that's not insurance based is the private duty. It's the only part of it that's not insurance based. As a result they're not used to offering a service that is fee for service. They have a difficult time selling it and they don't do well with it. This is the reason why many hospitals are stopping or pulling out of this part of the business is because they can't figure it out. It's not worthwhile so they just get rid of it and focus on what they know and they can give it to you. Now here's the cool thing. If you get into a hospital that has it's own home care, there's two ways you can go about doing it. You can go directly to that home care company and find out what services they are not willing to provide, what services do they not do and then offer it, and then be their exclusive referral that they give to people who are looking for what the hospital home care doesn't do. Great example, one of my clients many years ago, who's now one of my coaches, Nini. She was working her territory, she went into a hospital that had their own home care and she asked them, what services do you offer? What services do you not offer? And she found out that they did not do live-in care, they would not do same-day discharges. Interesting. No same-day discharges and no live-in care provided because it was just too much for them. They didn't want to get involved with it. So the agency that Nini worked for, specialized in live-in care and they were willing and able to staff same-day discharges. So every time this home care company had a same-day discharge, they called my client. Every time they had somebody who wanted or needed a 24 hour live-in caregiver, they called my client. So every week Nini's getting three to five referrals from the hospital's in-house home care company. They're number two on the list and they're getting a ton of business, a ton of clients, a ton of growth, from this one way of getting into a hospital. Want more on hospital marketing? Just remember to pay special attention to both your CV and cover letter as the recruiter will go through this first. Rest will have to depend upon your behaviour, mannerisms, goals and objectives.
