IKEA Business Model | Case Study | How IKEA earns? | Complete Story Ingvar Feodor Kamprad was born on 30 March 1926, on a small farm called Elmtaryd near the village of Agunnaryd, in the Swedish province of Småland. To most present-day Swedes, the date and the names, in a famously rural region, resound of harsher times, when Sweden was agrarian and poor. They speak of hard work, frugality and egalitarianism rooted in shared poverty – values which would eventually enter the IKEA ethos. Kamprad began his career at the age of six, selling matches. When just ten, he criss-crossed the neighbourhood on his bicycle, selling Christmas decorations, fish and pencils. At 17, in 1943, Kamprad’s father rewarded him with a small sum of money for doing well in school, despite being dyslexic. With it, Ingvar founded a business named IKEA, an abbreviation for Ingvar Kamprad from Elmtaryd, Agunnaryd, his boyhood home. Two years after starting IKEA, Kamprad began using milk trucks to deliver his goods. In 1947, he started selling furniture made by local manufacturers. By 1955, manufacturers began boycotting IKEA, protesting against Kamprad’s low prices. This forced him to design items in-house. In that vein, Kamprad unpopularly moved IKEA headquarters from Sweden to Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1973 to avoid unfavorable business taxes for his growing company. He also moved himself and his family to Switzerland to protest Sweden's increasing taxes. But the corporation is now based in the Netherlands, and Kamprad himself has since returned to Sweden. Kamprad was also behind the simple, yet revolutionary innovation that is the flat pack. He began selling IKEA products in flat-pack form, from his own warehouses. Thus the basic IKEA concept – simple, affordable flat-pack furniture, designed, distributed and sold in-house – was complete. The driving idea behind IKEA was, and is, that anyone should be able to afford stylish, modernist furniture. Kamprad felt he was not just cutting costs and making money, but serving the people as well. Kamprad’s business grew. And grew. IKEA expanded throughout Sweden, to Norway and Denmark, via Germany to continental Europe, and on to the ends of the world. When IKEA opened in Shanghai, 80,000 people visited the store. Today, there are over 300 IKEA stores in the world – in 38 countries. All this time, Kamprad has never borrowed money or issued a stock. Anecdotes about Kamprad abound. When his father complained that Ingvar slept late in the morning, Ingvar got himself an alarm clock, set it for six o’clock, and yanked away the off button. I’m going to assume a few things and that you’ve already worked for a furniture delivery company before and you know that you need to create a llc. If you don’t know how to create a llc then check out this video here. Your next step is to get a truck. If you cant buy a truck I would advise getting a rental for the time being. You can probably rent one long term from Budget Rentals Next step make sure you get commercial insurance. There is no way you should have a furniture delivery company without insurance. Things happen so you must be prepared. There are few tools you will need. I don’t think I need to go over every tool you’ll need to have because you’ve worked for a furniture delivery company already right? Instead getting a big crew I would hire help as I need it. Unless you start the furniture delivery company with a partner then you need to higher people as needed. Get yourself a 1800 number. I will have a link in the description on where you can get that from. So lets go over the check list You got you llc...check You got you truck...check Insurance.... Check You got yourself atleast 2 or 3 ppl in your crew.. check A 1-800 number...check Now how the hell do you get customers? When you first step out to get customers I would target independently owned thrift stores that sell furniture or independently owned furniture stores. These will be a easy way to get customers on a regular basis. You can leave fliers for people to contact you at the check out or you can set up an agreement with the store owner and they will recommend your company as the delivery company to call when setting up the delivery of the furniture. I would also use a app called Goshare. Goshare assists people to connect with on demand furniture delivery companies. This is a perfect app for people that live in Atlanta, LA, Phoenix, San Diego, Jersey City NJ, and a host of others. You can sign up as a driver fairly easy. You can apply directly on there website at Goshareapp.co This will probably be the way you will get your business off the ground while you do other forms of marketing. Enlisting the skills of a professional designer to assess your home and bring in furniture, artwork and accessories to highlight the purpose of every room shows your property in it's best possible light.  Here are my 5 Reasons why staging your home will make you money. 5 Reasons why staging your home will make you money. Helps the Buyer Visualize This one is probably the most important as often rooms are a different size than what the potential buyer has in their current home.  Staging your home helps those buyers see furniture set up by someone with an eye for design to maximize the utility of the space. Often buyers don't want to come in and completely refurnish a home, so seeing how their current furniture may fit into the space will ultimately help them envision living in the space. Sets a good first impression Remember, Buyers purchase emotionally and justify logically.  Studies have shown that buyers subconsciously make a decision about a property within 8 seconds of seeing the home. It is critical that the first impression is a good one.  You can help create this emotional WOW response by having a professional declutter your home and decorate with perfectly scaled furnishings. I've personally seen a lot of Buyers try staging after not getting the initial results they wanted. Highlights the purpose of each room As we mentioned above, helping a buyer visualize the home with the right furniture is important but this goes a bit further here where staging truly helps every room have a purpose.  Often enough, we encounter rooms that are small, oddly shaped or not symmetrical. Left to their own devices, this can too much for buyers to overcome. In these situations, staging plays a critical role in showing potential buyers exactly how they can make best use of the space. Makes the home seem larger Have you looked at two homes with similar square footage and came away with the impression that one was much larger or smaller than the other? This is often the result of sellers with too much furniture, over-sized furniture, and decorations on every wall and flat surface.  Staging isn't about putting every piece of furniture that a Buyer may have into a room but using the right furniture to help Buyers envision how the space is best utilized. Family-owned 9to5 Seating adopts a growth strategy, creating jobs with its contract chair business

In 2003, Darius, Susan and Dara Mir, the owners of 9to5 Seating, were at a critical decision point. Although the economy was soft, 9to5, a manufacturer of office furnishings, had seen strong demand for its office seating, helped by orders from office superstores and warehouse clubs like Costco and Staples. However, products manufactured in China were starting to cut into their profits as the mass-market superstores switched to ordering lower-cost goods,and they needed a strategy that would help them respond. After careful consideration, the Mirs, who had started the company in 1983 after leaving Iran, decided to focus a portion of the business on the contract market, where buyers specified the color, fabric and specific ergonomic features of their chairs. This made them less dependent on a small number of distributors and they were able to charge a small premium for a highly customized product. They also instituted manufacturing efficiencies so orders could be shipped in as little as two days. To manufacture more customized products, the Mirs needed a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility—as well as a bank to finance it. In an earlier business venture, a French bakery, Susan Mir had worked closely with Bank of America and had a very positive experience with the bank, even though her account at the time was a small one. Says son Dara Mir, "Early on when we launched 9to5 Seating, we were looking for a bank to partner with, to establish a relationship that would take care of our day-to-day banking needs and be able to provide a platform for our company to grow." After their decision to redirect more of their resources to the custom market, 9to5 started conferring with their Bank of America team on the financing of the new warehouse. Working with the bank, architects and designers, they focused on creating manufacturing efficiencies, and also on adding green elements, such as solar panels, to the building's design to generate all the energy they needed. Today, the warehouse, which has applied for LEED certification is humming from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and in the past 4 years, growth has been between 35 to 40% a year. Says Susan Mir, "We always wanted to build our dream factory. So when the idea settled in our mind, we got in touch with Bank of America. They visited us in our old factory and heard us talk about how we started the business 30 years ago and our plans for the next few years. They believed in us. If Bank of America had not been involved, we wouldn't be here today. Our success is their success." Following the construction of the warehouse, the Mirs shifted more of their business into contract furnishings, actually bringing jobs back from China to the U.S., one of their goals. The impact on their local community, Hawthorne, California, has been significant. Since the construction of the new warehouse, they have been able to hire 50 new employees, bringing their total workforce to 110. Matt Carmichael, their Client Service Manager, has worked with Darius, Susan and Dara since early in the warehouse project. In addition to the construction loan, the bank put together equipment financing to buy items like forklifts. They also use the bank's cash management and online banking capabilities. And for overseas transactions, they found bank with a strong international presence. Says Carmichael, "The Mirs personify the American dream. They came to the U.S. during a turbulent time, and through hard work and focus were able to put together a very successful company." Angie shared the personal story of how Noble House Furniture and Design began, their clear understanding of their key demographic and what keeps clients returning to their store over and over again. Question 1: Personas are a really big part of marketing. Marketing is about delivering the right message to the right people at the right time. Have you developed personas for your furniture and interior design store and do you know what your clientele looks like? We absolutely know what our clientele looks like. They are mostly women who are looking to improve their home. We also have people who come in that are starting their home from scratch and we help them from the ground up. But I would say that most of the time it is someone who has put his or her home together and is ready to do a beautiful job of renovating it. We work really hard to help them come up with a look that they are hoping for and dreaming of and making their home a place that they love to walk into. Question two: What do you do from a social media perspective? We are on Instagram, Facebook, Google +. One of our designers is really good at social media and comes in every Friday specifically to work on social media. We send out pictures of our new offerings in the store and making sure that any specials that are coming are on there and notify people that way. But more importantly, its fun to get a conversation going about design and what we offer. Question three: During a large snow storm or something else that might prevent people from coming out is that a time that you might send an email or some other touch point? Yes! We definitely try to monitor that and make sure that we are giving an incentive or a reason so come see us. We have to do that to stay in business. We have an email list and anyone can get on it and that is really where we send out everything that we are doing in the store. We try to send it out at least twice a month sometimes more to our best clientele. Very often they will tell you to purchase business cards from your company. The cards will have the company logo and your contact information that identifies you as an "Independent Distributor." Unfortunately, these cards only serve to put a prospect on the defensive. When you hand them a card, it gives them notice to put up walls and be on the defensive before you ever mention your business. Many years ago I read a book called, Endless Referrals by Bob Burg. He offers a truly effective strategy for NOT giving out business cards. This strategy, described by the author, is a good network marketing tip. When you are speaking with someone, such as at a Chamber of Commerce card exchange event, do not ask the person to take your card. Instead, get them talking about what they do for a living. Then ask, "Please describe who would be a prospect for your business, so I can refer people to you." Perhaps, if you are talking with someone who owns an office furniture store, he might say his best prospect is someone who is about to open a business, or lease office space, and needs furnishings. Eventually they will ask for your card, in order to be polite. At this point you tell them you just ran out of cards. Look at the card they gave you to be sure that there is a mailing address and/or email address on it. Tell them that you will send them your contact information in a few days. In a few days mail them a short note that includes your contact information, and perhaps a business card with just your name, phone number and email address. In your note express your pleasure at having met them. Say that you will be happy to send them referrals, and would appreciate the same. Give a short, one sentence description of who is a "prospect" for you. For example: "I would appreciate your passing on my contact information to anyone who might be interested in creating a second income that wouldn't interfere with what they already are doing." The business cards that this person received at the event where you met, were likely tossed out the same day as the event. But your contact information now stands out, and is much more likely to be kept if you follow this strategy. Brand extension or brand stretching is a marketing strategy in which a firm marketing a product with a well-developed image uses the same brand name in a different product category. The new product is called a spin-off. Organizations use this strategy to increase and leverage brand equity (definition: the net worth and long-term sustainability just from the renowned name). An example of a brand extension is Jello-gelatin creating Jello pudding pops. It increases awareness of the brand name and increases profitability from offerings in more than one product category. A brand's "extendibility" depends on how strong consumer's associations are to the brand's values and goals. Ralph Lauren's Polo brand successfully extended from clothing to home furnishings such as bedding and towels. Both clothing and bedding are made of linen and fulfill a similar consumer function of comfort and hominess. Arm & Hammer leveraged its brand equity from basic baking soda into the oral care and laundry care categories. By emphasizing its key attributes, the cleaning and deodorizing properties of its core product, Arm & Hammer was able to leverage those attributes into new categories with success. Another example is Virgin Group, which was initially a record label that has extended its brand successfully many times; from transportation (aeroplanes, trains) to games stores and video stores such as Virgin Megastores. In the 1990s, 81 percent of new products used brand extension to introduce new brands and to create sales. Launching a new product is not only time-consuming but also needs a big budget to create brand awareness and to promote a product's benefits. Brand extension is one of the new product development strategies which can reduce financial risk by using the parent brand name to enhance consumers' perception due to the core brand equity. While there can be significant benefits in brand extension strategies, there can also be significant risks, resulting in a diluted or severely damaged brand image. Poor choices for brand extension may dilute and deteriorate the core brand and damage the brand equity. Most of the literature focuses on the consumer evaluation and positive impact on parent brand. In practical cases, the failures of brand extension are at higher rate than the successes. Some studies show that negative impact may dilute brand image and equity. In spite of the positive impact of brand extension, negative association and wrong communication strategy do harm to the parent brand even brand family. Product extensions are versions of the same parent product that serve a segment of the target market and increase the variety of an offering. An example of a product extension is Coke vs. Diet Coke in the same product category of soft drinks. This tactic is undertaken due to the brand loyalty and brand awareness associated with an existing product. Consumers are more likely to buy a new product that has a reputable brand name on it than buy a similar product from a competitor without a reputable brand name. Consumers receive a product from a brand they trust, and the company offering the product can increase its product portfolio and potentially gain a larger share in the market in which it competes. Brand extension research mainly focuses on consumer evaluation of extension and attitude toward the parent brand. In their 1990 model, Aaker and Keller provide a sufficient depth and breadth proposition to examine consumer behaviour and a conceptual framework. The authors use three dimensions to measure the fit of extension. First, the "Complement" refers to consumers taking two product classes (extension and parent brand product) as complementary in satisfying their specific needs.

Equally, the Russian event will be held under the same publicity banner as Milan – Good Design! - thus maintaining a relationship and ongoing dialogue with its own public. This is intended to communicate the Salone brand with a conceptual continuum that valorises the fair’s iconic status. The 14th edition brought to Crocus Expo-2 home furnishing goods exhibited last April at the Salone del Mobile.Milano, the established showcase for upcoming trends and affirming new talents, while consolidating positions and strategies. More than 280 companies exhibited in Pavilions 7 and 8, seeing the event as a great opportunity to gain a foothold in the Russian market and that of the former Soviet Republics, which are showing an increasingly keen interest in quality products, be they classic, design or luxury pieces.
