How do Obamacare subsidies work?
A common question we hear in our customer care center is: Can you explain how the subsidies work? 1. People who live in the U.S. 2. Are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or lawfully present in the U.S. 3. Are not currently incarcerated may qualify for premium tax credits to help them pay for their health insurance. If you meet these requirements, and you're total household income is between 100 and 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (or FPL), you will likely be eligible to receive a premium tax credit to reduce the cost of your health insurance. These 'premium credits" or subsidies will be set on a sliding scale so that your contributions to the monthly premiums will be limited to a defined percentage of your income. It's complicated... If you meet residency requirements for subsidies, then you're total household income has to be between 100% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (or FPL). If it is, you may qualify for a "premium tax credit," or subsidy, to limit what you pay for your health insurance. These subsidies are set on a sliding scale so that what you spend each month is limited to a defined percentage of your income, to the second least expensive silver-level plan available in your area. Confused? Here is an example If you wanted to buy the second least expensive silver plan available in your area, and your monthly income is 133% of FPL, you would be earning about $1,273 per month in 2013. At that income level you could spend no more than 3% of your income -- about $38 per month -- to buy that second least expensive plan. The government subsidy pays the rest of your monthly premium. As your income increases, so does your share of the cost for the monthly premium. So, if your income rises to 400% of FPL -- about $3,832 per month in 2013 - you could spend no more than 9.5% of your monthly income -- about $364 - for that same plan; the second least expensive silver plan. So if the second least expensive silver plan available in your area costs $300 a month, and you earn 400% of FPL, there is no subsidy for you. But, if the second least expensive silver plan available in your area costs $500 a month, the government would pay the difference between the $500 plan and your $364 cap. In that scenario you would pay $364 per month for your health insurance plan, and the value of your subsidy would be $136; $500 minus your $364 cap. Now, if there also happened to be a bronze plan available for $400 a month, you could enroll in that plan and get the same $136 subsidy. In that case, your plan would cost you $264 per month. Or, if you wanted a Gold plan that cost $600 per month, you would -- once again -- apply your $136 per month subsidy and pay $464 per month for your insurance policy.

Trump is ending the Obamacare subsidies to health insurers. Here’s who ends up paying
President Trump continued to chip away at the Affordable Care Act by ending subsidies to health insurance companies that help pay deductibles, co-payments and out-of-pocket charges for lower-income Americans. Judy Woodruff speaks with Julie Rovner of Kaiser Health News to make sense of the president’s move, which many experts say could destabilize the health care marketplace.

Why Your Plan Was Cancelled: Health Insurance and the Affordable Care Act
There's a bizarre reason why millions of Americans saw their health plans cancelled in 2013 and, as explained in a new video featuring Robert Graboyes of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, millions more will lose their plans in years to come. Insurance coverage for Americans will remain in permanent turmoil because the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires that all plans fit within cookie-cutter designs called "metallic tiers." (The tiers—bronze, silver, gold, and platinum—refer to the percentage of medical expenses a particular plan pays.) The video also explains that families may have to switch plans repeatedly because, as circumstances change, a plan that fits within a tier one year may not fit in any tier in a later year. Please see Dr. Graboyes’ op-ed on this issue (If You Like Your Plan, You Still Can't Keep It) http://mercatus.org/expert_commentary/if-you-your-plan-you-still-cant-keep-it and subscribe to his health care policy updates https://mercatuscenter.wufoo.com/forms/subscribe-to-the-health-care-policy-newsletter/

Obamacare: The BIGGEST Mistake You Can Make When Choosing a Health Insurance Plan
This video discusses a huge problem that has been seen nationwide with the new Obamacare health plan (and it isn't the Obamacare website). It is the fact that so many new enrollments seem to just be picking the cheapest monthly premium package instead of looking at all of the variables. Most importantly, the deductible that goes with that package. This video gives some specific examples that what some Americans are paying per month and also what the corresponding deductible is. Keep in mind, the most important thing to do when picking your health insurance plan is to find out the TOTAL cost of owning that obamacare plan, not just the monthly premium. Will You Lose Your Obamacare Subsidy for Your Ohio Health Insurance?
Free Video Course On Understanding Obamacare: http://hubs.ly/y028xm0 Before we go anywhere, the first thing I need to say is, I don’t know. It’s impossible to predict what the courts will do with the latest legal/political squabble over the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). What I can say is that you are not losing your subsidy right now and it should stay in place while this debate works its way up the courtroom ladder. That’s the good news. What’s The Bad News? (Ohio didn’t set up its Exchange) The way the law is clearly written, which says tax credits, or subsidies, to help pay premiums are available to people who enroll through exchanges "established by the state." That’s not Ohio. In fact, that’s not 36 of the 50 states either. According to a recent article on AP News, the average person now pays around $82 a month for their health insurance, when in reality the plan actually costs $346. That leaves $264 for the federal government to pick up on the check each month through the subsidies. When the government wrote the law they assumed EVERY state would set up their own exchange or marketplace. That clearly didn’t happen. This failure of the english language has been brought to the attention of our leaders repeatedly over the last two to three years. Nothing has been done about it.

With only weeks before the midterms, the Trump administration announced plans to consider state requests that would further loosen Affordable Care Act restrictions, offer less comprehensive health plans and use Obamacare subsidies to pay for them. William Brangham asks Margot Sanger-Katz of the New York Times about the possible impact on politics, prices and people with preexisting conditions. Michele Bachmann on CNN 'I Lost My Health Insurance Under Obamacare'
During a lively debate with Paul Begala on CNN, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann told Begala and Wolf Blitzer that she lost her health insurance under Obamacare and is going to have to sign up for the D.C. exchanges, but wants to wait until the website, with the glitches and information errors, gets properly fixed. When asked by Blitzer if she's going to sign up for the exchanges, Bachmann first said, "Are you kidding? I'm not gonna waste an hour on that thing!" before telling him "I lost my health insurance under Obamacare." She said her husband has some personal health issues and they need insurance, at which point Begala jumped in to say, "And now you can't be denied! Thanks, Barack Obama!" Bachmann shot back, "We were just fine before." She explained to Blitzer that "we are forced to go on the website and purchase the health insurance plan from the D.C. health exchange." And while she's going to do it eventually, Bachmann said she doesn't want to waste her "time and frustration" on a website that doesn't even work yet.

Obamacare compared to Trump's Health Care Plan
CNN's Health Care hyperbole versus Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price... Under the current Medicaid program that's been in place under Obamacare, Price states that one-third of the physicians that ought to be seeing Medicaid patients ARE NOT. Price further asserts that Medicaid recipients will “absolutely not” lose coverage under the House GOP’s health care replacement bill -- and he strongly disagrees with CBO's prediction that the GOP plan would cut 880 billion from Medicaid. “Remember that there are no cuts to the Medicaid program. They’re increases in spending,” Price explained to Fake News CNN Jake Tapper. “... What we’re doing is apportioning it in a way that allows the states greater flexibility,” he continued. “Imagine a system that works better for patients,” said Price. “What we’re fashioning is a system that would allow the states to tailor that Medicaid program to those specific individuals,” he said, adding that it would not only save money, but also provide patients with a higher level of care. The winners under ObamaCare, were the federal government and insurance companies". The winners under the newly proposed program, he contends, will be patients, families, and doctors. Price vehemently disagrees with CBO's prediction that the GOP plan would cut 880 billion from Medicaid, and he explains why in this video. The Medicaid reforms in this bill are historic and potentially transformational, ten times more significant than the welfare reform bill of 1996. If the AHCA was solely a bill about Medicaid reform, we’d be jumping for joy. The problem is that in the Senate, the Medicaid reforms are jeopardized by the clumsy tax credit structure, because those who currently get coverage through Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion will not get enough assistance under the flat tax credit to retain coverage. The temptation in the Senate will be to water down the Medicaid reforms, instead of fixing the tax credits. We need to encourage them to do the latter. ABC News admits Obamacare will cause people to lose health insurance
DIANE SAWYER: And now back here at home, the ongoing drama surrounding the major change in America's health care system coming. ObamaCare taking effect on October 1st, but in a last-ditch stand against it, one senator has performed his own endurance test. ABC senior Washington correspondent Jeff Zeleny. TED CRUZ: I told the American people that I intended to stand until I can stand no more. JEFF ZELENY: So Ted Cruz stood fast for 21 hours, 19 minutes, a symbolic fight against a health care law. After reading a bedtime story via C-SPAN to his two daughters in Texas... CRUZ: Do you like green eggs and ham? ZELENY: --he told story after story how families are bracing for ObamaCare. But far from the spectacle in the Capitol, American families are preparing for ObamaCare. Enrollment starts next week. In Pittsburgh, Dan Howard received a letter saying his policy will be cancelled because of the new law. Married with six children, he's struggling to find coverage. DAN HOWARD: Of course I'm concerned. ZELENY: But in Miami, Maggie Fernandez told us she's been cutting her high blood pressure pills in half, waiting to buy insurance since losing her job earlier this year. MAGGIE FERNANDEZ: I need affordable health care. I'm looking forward to signing up on October 1. ZELENY: The bottom line for millions: many young and healthy will likely pay more while older and sick Americans get a break and costs vary widely. A family of four making $50,000 will pay $600 a month in some states, far more in others. And some Republicans keep pushing to defund ObamaCare, a threat that could still shut down the government next week. We caught up with Senator Cruz moments after he finished speaking to ask what he accomplished. CRUZ: This was all about elevating the debate in the public, giving the American people a chance to speak. ZELENY: Jeff Zeleny, ABC News, Capitol Hill.

Over 200,000 Washington State Residents Losing Their Health Plans Due To Obamacare
Over 200K WA State residents will los their health plans due to Obamacare. Fifty-nine-year-old Edmonds business owner Doug Hall is one of those affected. "It's very frustrating that we're being forced to do this," Hall said. Hall's health provider told him last month it was terminating his current plan, but he says the new plan they're offering as a replacement has higher premiums and deductibles and doesn't offer the same level of coverage for he and his wife. This week Republicans blasted President Obama, claiming he gave Americans false promises that everyone would be able to keep their current healthcare coverage. The White House responded, saying it's never been a secret that less than 5 percent of all insured Americans would have to seek a new plan. Hall and others can't be denied new coverage, but he says he'd just prefer to continue his old plan. "I don't know what to do, other than go with the flow, I guess, and pay more money," he said.

Insurance Scam: Obamacare Benefits Left Out Of Letters
"Across the country, insurance companies have sent misleading letters to consumers, trying to lock them into the companies' own, sometimes more expensive health insurance plans rather than let them shop for insurance and tax credits on the Obamacare marketplaces -- which could lead to people...spending thousands more for insurance than the law intended. In some cases, mentions of the marketplace in those letters are relegated to a mere footnote, which can be easily overlooked. The extreme lengths to which some insurance companies are going to hold on to existing customers at higher price, as the Affordable Care Act fundamentally re-orders the individual insurance market, has caught the attention of state insurance regulators...".* The companies involved include Humana and Lifewise. I'm the owner of Pfeifer Insurance Brokers located in Burlingame California. Today I'm going to talk to you about Covered California, AKA ObamaCare, AKA the Affordable Care Act. By the end of this video you will know who this Act benefits, how to apply for a policy under the insurance exchange, and best of all I'm going to show you an example of a 30 year old who lives in San Francisco, earns $25,000 per year and qualifies for a health policy that is under $20 per month. The Affordable Care Act made three major changes to the Health Care Industry. One, Health policies have been standardized; making it much easier to make an apples to apples comparison across the different insurance companies. Two: Health is no longer a factor in determining your premium or eligibility. It no longer makes a difference if you have cancer, a tumor, are obese or you smoke. It looks like you caught a break. The only factors for determining your premium are your age and your zip code. Three: There is premium assistance for individuals making less than $48,000 per year. The premium assistance can really add up and drive down the premium you actually have to pay. This is covered.com the official homepage for Covered California. I want to show you a couple of helpful links. Let's go to the shop and compare tool and then click on Health Insurance Benefits. The Affordable Care Act set up four standard policies. The Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Plans. All of the companies that participate in the Exchange have to offer these four policies. The Bronze policy will have the lowest monthly premium, but it will also have the highest deductible and the highest copay. Now let's take a look at who's eligible for premium assistance. The income guidelines page shows that if you are an individual earning less than $48,960 per year you may be eligible for premium assistance. The less you earn the more premium assistance you may be eligible for. Now I would like to show you the fun part where we run a quote and I can show you how inexpensive a policy can be. Let's take a look at an individual who is 30 years old, lives in San Francisco and earns $25,000 per year. And that's enough to get us started with a quote. Click on See My Options. We get a pop up window that shows the metallic tiers. Here we can see the policies that are available to his person. And Wow! Look at that. CCHP is offering a policy for just $18 per month for the bronze policy. If you want a bronze policy but not the CCHP HMO policy you can see different options to the right. Scroll down and you can see the Silver plans. If you go to the next page you can see the Gold and Platinum plans. Click on a plan you are interested in. Note that there is $190 in premium assistance available to this person. You can see under the Platinum plan there is no deductible and the copays are very low. If you are interest in applying for a plan go back to the home page and click apply. If you need help, click of the request enrollment assistance button or contact a Covered California agent like myself. Covered California is good place to shop for your insurance needs. If you are eligible for premium assistance you will want to buy your policy through Covered California. If you are not eligible for Premium Assistance you can purchase your policy directly from the Insurance Company's website. I hope you enjoyed the video today. If you did give it a thumbs up. If you really liked it, share it with your friends and family. See you next time.

Some losing insurance because of Affordable Care Act
ALBANY -- The website isn't the only glitch to the Affordable Care Act. Despite promises from the President during the push to adopt health care reform, new reports show at least 2 million people will be dropped from their health insurance and forced into the exchanges. Some local people just got their notices. They didn't think they'd be dropped at all because of the Affordable Care Act and they're fearful that coverage may end up being more expensive for them. They're weighing several options now including whether or not to have any insurance. I'm concerned, said one man. I took this job because I'd have health care.So imagine this man's surprise when he received this letter from his insurance company saying his coverage would end with the end of the year! He was placed through a temp agency with a state government job along with another woman facing the same problem. She tells us her insurance company said it was because they didn't meet the federal requirements. She can sign up for the exchanges on the New York State of Health website, or pay a $95 penalty and have no insurance. I'm tempted to go without insurance for a while, she told CBS6. Pay the penalty. There will likely be more coverage offered under the new insurance plans. They are listed on four tiers of coverage. While they offer the same set of essential benefits, there will be differences in how much you'll have to pay for the premiums or out-of-pocket expenses.I don't think some people understand why it's going to be in some cases more expensive, said Wendy Weller, Associate Professor of Public Health at UAlbany. That's because there's broader coverage and you have a little bit of safer coverage.Weller says you may be getting more out of your health plan after January 1, and people kicked off current plans may get some help.It may look expensive to go online and see a plan, and say, oh my gosh, this is how much you have to pay on a yearly basis but part of this cost might be offset by subsidies, Weller said. Those subsidies could vary depending on how much you make and are on sliding scales so people with lower incomes receive larger subsidies, Weller said.

1 million Ohioans to lose health coverage under Obamacare replacement
1 million Ohioans to lose health coverage under Obamacare replacement WASHINGTON — The House Republican plan to replace Obamacare would reduce deficits by $119 billion but increase the number of Americans without health insurance by 23 million over the next decade, concluded a report released Wednesday by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. About 1 million Ohioans would lose health coverage — 700,000 from the Medicaid expansion and an estimated 293,000 now on private health-care exchanges, the office of Sen. Sherrod Brown said. The much-anticipated analysis, completed with the Joint Committee on Taxation, also found that in states that receive a waiver from market regulations, the price for those who become ill or who have pre-existing conditions could skyrocket to the point that they would ultimately be priced out of the market. The letter states that as a limited-benefit plan, CoverTN does not cover all the services required by the federal law and will no longer exist as of Jan. 1. CoverTN had a $25,000 annual limit on benefits. The federal health law does not allow yearly expenditure caps. CoverTN was established in 2006 as a program in which the state, employer and employee would evenly split premium costs based on an individual's age, tobacco use and weight. Stacy Harris of Nashville used CoverTN for preventive care and supplemented it with another policy that had a $15,000 deductible. The private insurer had notified her it would stop offering the high-deductible policy before she got the letter from the state. "It was all I had," Harris said. The law establishes subsidies tied to incomes to help people buy coverage on the Health Insurance Marketplace, the federal exchange. But Harris, who publishes the Internet guide Stacy's Music Row Report and has investment income, said she made too much money to get much help. "I figured it out," she said. "It's not pretty." Families USA, an advocacy organization for health-care consumers, was critical of CoverTN, calling it a "bare-bones health plan" in a 2009 report. The organization pointed out the plan's limits on hospital coverage, prescription drugs and cancer treatment." -Tennessean http://youtu.be/pvTb3QnEacg http://youtu.be/2QCtw6Ev89k
