No obstante, hay excepciones como el clorazepato dipotásico (Tranxilium) o el clordiazepóxido (Librium). El término benzodiazepina se refiere a la porción en la estructura química de estos medicamentos compuesto por el anillo de benceno unido a otro anillo de siete miembros heterocíclicos llamado diazepina. A pesar de que en el uso clínico las benzodiazepinas ejercen efectos cualitativos muy similares uno del otro, existen importantes diferencias cuantitativas en sus propiedades farmacocinéticas y farmacodinámicas, las cuales han sido la base de sus variados patrones de aplicación terapéutica.4 Las benzodiacepinas pueden causar dependencia, no presisamente se refiere a una adiccion, sino a que solamente controlan pero no curan la enfermedad o la ansiedad. Las benzodiazepinas se usan y abusan recreacionalmente en la activación de las vías de gratificación dopaminérigcas del sistema nervioso central.41 Quienes abusan de las BZD desarrollan un alto grado de tolerancia, así como subidas en escaladas de las dosis a niveles muy elevadas. El uso de larga data de las BZD tiene el potencial de crear dependencia física y psicológica y añade un riesgo de serios síntomas de abstinencia. La tolerancia y la dependencia de las BZD se crea con rapidez entre los usuarios de estos medicamentos, demostrando síntomas de abstinencia de las BZD en tan solo 3 semanas de uso contínuo.
