New Generation Varta Lithium Batteries Varta lithium batteries are the chemical sources of current, where lithium metal - one of the most chemically active metals - is used as the anode. This metal has the greatest electrochemical potential and provides the greatest energy thickness. At the same time the high activity of the lithium metal significantly complicates the production processes. The requirements with respect to the current source tightness in this case are also extemely high. All of this ultimately impacts the cost of these power elements. If compared to the saline and alkaline batteries, the lithium current sources have a number of important advantages. Their main benefit is the high specific energy thickness. So, at dimensions equal to those of their counterparts, lithium components have the greatest energy content, and are thus able to support longer operation. Another important feature is the long storage period, which reaches 10, and in some cases, even 15 years! This is possible thanks to the extremely low charge currents. The typical self-discharge current normally decreases the rated capacity by a maximum of 1% per year. This means that the element's charge would theoretically only drop by 10% in 10 years. These power elements provide reliable supply of power for devices requiring a lot of energy for operation. Such devices include, for example, digital cameras, players, metal detectors, flashlights, etc. Lithium batteries work up to 7 times longer than their alkaline counterparts in devices with high energy consumption. They have virtually the same capacity at low and high discharge currents. The AAA capacity is 1,100 milliampere-hours, the AA capacity -- 2,900 milliampere-hours. Lithium batteries are also light weight -- 33% lighter than the alkaline ones. They work under extremely high and low temperatures, and contain no hazardous components, like mercury or lead.

New Rules for Ground Transport

New regulations covering the safe shipment of lithium batteries went into effect beginning August 7, 2015, after being pushed back by six months to allow the industry enough time to adjust to the new requirements. Ruling HM-224F, set by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), requires shippers moving lithium batteries by ground to meet specific package marking and hazard communication documentation standards. The new regulations require that packages containing fewer than 24 cells or fewer than 12 batteries to have a hazard mark or special documentation when being shipped by ground in the same way they have been prepared for air shipment. In the past, shipments of up to 12 “small” batteries (or 24 cells) were exempt from these regulations. Most lithium batteries are now considered as Class 9 hazardous materials when transported by ground transportation, which makes them more closely aligned with the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. Lithium batteries offer high performance in a wide range of products, and can pose serious hazards if not packed and handled safely when transported. Both metal and ion flavors of lithium are highly flammable and can easily ignite as a result of exposure to a heat source when carried in cargo holds. The ruling is designed to better ensure that lithium cells and batteries are able to withstand normal transportation conditions and are packaged to reduce the possibility of damage that could lead to an unsafe situation, according to Chicago-based Labelmaster, which provides regulatory information and products focused on the transportation of hazardous materials, and was quoted in article appearing in American Shipper. The new rule also helps to standardize the way in which lithium batteries and equipment powered by such batteries are shipped. Ground shipments in the past were under one set of requirements while air shipments were held to a more stringent set of standards. Under the new rules, most companies will be able to standardize their shipping process. The rules apply whether lithium batteries are shipped into, out of, or through the United States (including those shipped to or from Canada) and transgressions can result in a company’s lithium battery shipments being delayed, returned or even subject to fines. It must be noted that air transport still has the most stringent rules regarding lithium battery shipment, due primarily to findings by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that even existing Halon fire suppression systems could not extinguish lithium-initiated fires. As of January 1, 2015, lithium metal batteries packed by themselves (not contained in or packed with equipment) are banned for transport as cargo on passenger aircraft. A Chinese-made fake Samsung Note 3 exploded inside a Hong Kong bus driver's pocket on his way to work on Tuesday. The 48-year-old Kowloon Motor Bus driver, identified by his surname Huang, asked one of his colleagues to get him a fake Samsung Galaxy Note 3 from China earlier this year, which cost him roughly $220. Around 7 a.m., the phone started making weird noises. When Huang went to the restroom at the terminal station, he saw smoke coming out of the smartphone that was tucked into his shirt pocket. Before he could remove his shirt, he heard a loud bang, followed by smoke and fire! He quickly put out the fire, using a water hose. The left side of his chest was slightly burned but nothing too serious. He ditched the fired hazard phone and eventually picked up a new Sony M2. According to an expert, the explosion could have been caused from the phone overheating, due to a short-circuit. Huang bought the knockoff phone for about a third of the price of an original Samsung Note 3. I got used to my inherited iPhone 5’s short battery life - battery aside, it was a very good phone: fast, slim, beautiful, great camera (for photos)… I was happy with it. When that iPhone 5 got 2 years and 6 months, I started noticing a weird color movement when I touched the sides of the screen, like when you push a notebook LCD’s screen. In only one week, it got much more visible - and then I realized: the screen was being pushed up from behind. On the laterals, the front glass was almost 2mm up from its original position in the aluminum bezel. The battery was expanding - that’s dangerous, poses risk of fire or even explosion. Apple replaced my old iPhone 5 with a new one. The Genius Bar experience was superb. At the “Puerta del Sol” store in the center of Madrid, the ‘Geniuses’ were very kind and knowledgeable - they assisted me on upgrading the replacement phone’s iOS to the newest version so I could restore my iCloud Backup. You cannot restore a backup made on iOS 8.3 on a phone with iOS 8.1, for example. But you can restore older iOS backups (lets say 8.3) on a newer iOS, such as 8.4. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter was a NASA spacecraft that comprehensively mapped the lunar surface at a resolution of up to 0.5 m and determined the extent of water ice for possible use by future manned bases. Lunar lander built by Goddard Space Flight Center for NASA, USA. LRO launched along with its companion spacecraft, the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS), from Kennedy Space Center on 18 June 2009 on an Atlas 5 401 launch vehicle at 21:32 UT (5:32 p.m. EDT). LRO and LCROSS separated at 22:16:43 UT. LRO was put into a direct insertion trajectory and reached the Moon on 23 June at 09:43 UT (5:43 a.m. EDT). It entered an initial 5 hour orbit with a periselene altitude of roughly 100 km which was lowered into a 50 km circular orbit. The mission spent one year in a 30 - 70 km altitude lunar polar orbit, called the exploration phase of the mission. In September 2010 it started the science phase, where it was put into a quasi-stable, low-maintenance ~30 x 180 km orbit. As of September 2015 it was in its second extended science mission. The satellite had a launch mass of about 1846 kg, and a dry mass of less than 949 kg. The platform is three-axis stabilized and power of about 1850 W (end-of-life), giving 800 W average over each orbit, will be provided by a 10.7 square meter solar array and stored in an 80 A-hr Li-ion battery. Communications are via S-band for uplink and low rate downlink and Ka-band for high rate downlink (100-300 Mbps). The spacecraft carries 92 kg of scientific payload composed of: Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC), two narrow-angle (1 m resolution) monochromatic cameras and one wide-angle (100 m resolution) color and UV camera to acquire images of small scale landing site hazards and document lighting conditions at the lunar poles; Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA), a laser altimeter to measure landing site slopes and search for polar ices; Lunar Exploration Neutron Detector (LEND), a neutron detector to search for water ice and characterize the space radiation environment; Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment (DLRE), a radiometer to map the temperature of the lunar surface to identify cold traps and possible lunar ice deposits; Lyman-Alpha Mapping Project (LAMP), a Lyman-alpha mapper to observe the lunar surface in the far ultraviolet, looking for surface ices and frosts and imaging permanently shadowed regions; and Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation (CRaTER), a device to investigate background space radiation using tissue-equivalent plastics. NASA has also signed an agreement with the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office to cooperate on the development of Mini-RF, a miniature synthetic aperture radar sensor to map the Moon's surface. Total payload power requirement is about 125 W. The total estimated total cost for the mission is roughly $460 million. LCROSS The Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) was launched along with the LRO spacecraft. LCROSS is designed to search for water ice on the Moon's surface. The mission consists of a Shepherding Spacecraft (S-S/C) attached to the Centaur upper stage. The S-S/C guided the Centaur after orbital insertion through two highly eccentric 40 day earth orbits. The S-S/C then guided the Centaur into a trajectory to impact Cabeus, a permanently shadowed site on the Moon, chosen for its likelihood of containing water ice. The S-S/C separated from the Centaur and performed a delay burn to follow ten minutes behind. The Centaur impacted the lunar surface at 11:31 UT on 9 October 2009, throwing up a cloud of debris. The S-S/C took images and collected other data on the impact and cloud of ejecta before also striking the Moon at 11:36 UT. The S-S/C was built on an EELV Secondary Payload Adaptor (ESPA) ring with a dry mass of approximately 534 kg and 300 kg of hydrazine propellant. Power is supplied by a 420 W solar array charging a 40 A-h Li-Ion battery. Propulsion is through two 8-thruster pods and communications will be via two omnidirectional and two horn antennas. The S-S/C was equipped with two visible cameras, three infrared cameras, three spectrometers, and a photometer for observations.

These are the Tensor STB Series tools from Atlas Copco. These cordless transducerized tools are powered by Li-ion batteries, eliminating dirty cables from taking up space and causing trip hazards in the work place. To set up tightening strategies and gather results with a Bluetooth model users will connect directly to an Ad-Hoc network created by an IRC Focus controller or Power Focus 4000 controller with a Communication Kit. WiFi models can also connect to an Ad-Hoc network and are able to function in Infrastructure mode as well. This allows users to connect a WiFi STB tool directly to their existing wireless network without the need for additional hardware as long as a controller is connected to the same network.
