The Disney Aquaduck is quite possibly the most anticipated new "feature" of the new Disney Dream cruise ship. A fully-enclosed "water roller coaster," this ride takes passengers all around the top deck of the Disney Dream, including out over the ocean and through the forward funnel!
The Disney AquaDuck begins on Deck 12, Aft on the Disney Dream and travels 765 feet and features an exciting 4 deck drop. It was designed for adults and children at least 42" or taller.
Developed by Disney Imagineers, this elevated water coaster—the first of its kind at sea—travels 765 feet and features exciting twists, turns and plunges. It was designed for adults and children at least 42" or taller. Single riders must be at least 54" or taller. Children under 7 may ride with someone 14 years of age or older, provided the child is at least 42" tall.
The Disney AquaDuck affords breathtaking views of the ocean and ship below—that is, if you're brave enough to keep your eyes open during this exciting ride! It also offers a bird's-eye view of the exciting new pools available to family, kids and adults on the Disney Dream.
Exact operating hours are to be determined. However, even when they are, operating times are likely to vary, so once you're onboard check the Personal Navigator—the Disney Cruise Line daily newsletter detailing all there is to see and do—for the most accurate times.
Look for the big Donald Duck AquaDuck sign on the aft end of the Disney Dream to find the entrance to the Aquaduck. For me, this was a bit confusing at first, as the Aquaduck sign is really closer to the end of the ride than the beginning. You have to climb a big flight of stairs, both outside and inside the aft funnel, a bit. Once you're at the top, you hop into the Aquaduck ride vehicle. One warning! Don't bring along a waterproof camera like I did. They'll make you turn around, get rid of the camera and start the Aquaduck ride line all over again. The Aquaduck ride vehicle can accommodate one or two people, although I only rode it by myself, so I'm not sure how the ride goes with a second person. As soon as you start the Aquaduck ride, be sure to look down, as this is where you go out over the ocean away from the Disney Dream! I almost missed it and my wife did miss it her first time. The Aquaduck is a very exciting ride for the first 30 seconds. The lazy river part at the end almost ruins it for me. I would have like to keep the thrills going. As a result, I'm not likely to wait very long to ride the Aquaduck.
From the Disney Parks Blog:
"Disney Cruise Line fans might remember that last year on the blog I revealed one of the most exciting features coming to the Disney Dream -- AquaDuck, the first water coaster aboard a cruise ship.
I wrapped up that message by saying "we'll have to wait until 2011 to actually experience the AquaDuck" since the ship's inaugural cruise is set for January 26, 2011.
I thought that would be true, really I did. But it's not. Not for me and a few lucky Disney cast and crew members, anyway.
A few weeks ago I was among the first people to ride AquaDuck! (Have I mentioned that I love my job?)
It was a chilly day at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany so we wore wetsuits for several solo rides down the 765-foot flume. Capturing our fun on the two-person raft was a high-definition camera protected with plenty of padding -- and insurance!
I wish I could have taken all of you with me. Instead, I brought back this exclusive video to tide you over until the Disney Dream begins sailing out of Florida's Port Canaveral next year.
Take a ride with Cruise Director Rachel Quinn as Peter Ricci of Walt Disney Imagineering describes some of the features that make AquaDuck a not-to-miss experience for our guests 48 inches or taller."
