By the time you get to your seventies, most of the elderly population already suffer from brain loss. It won’t be long when these patients diagnosed with various cognitive impairments will be diagnosed with dementia and then eventually die. In this instance, you can definitely claim that prevention is better than cure. There is no known cure for Alzheimer’s but there are countless palliative treatments you can take to reduce risk factors and improve the quality of lives of the patients involved. Over the years, countless studies have been conducted to identify risk factors and the race is still on in discovering potential medical treatments that have remained elusive until today. Among these studies was one conducted in 1990 involving 22 patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The notable observation made was the excessively high levels of homocysteine in their blood. It also relates to a story that spread widely in 1969 about two kids with brains that have turned into mush due to a rare genetic mutation causing their homocysteine levels to skyrocket. It was then when they experts hypothesized the possible link between high homocysteine levels and brain loss. But it isn’t a lost cause yet since researchers discovered that homocysteine can be detoxified by the following vitamins: 1.Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) 2.Vitamin B9 (Folate/ Folic Acid) 3.Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) It wasn’t an immediate success when you look at neuropsychological assessments but when they looked into structural neuroimaging, B-vitamins supplementation actually showed some promise. It was able to slow down brain atrophy. Hence, it is highly possible that brain loss is reduced especially among patients with Alzheimer’s with the help of B vitamins. And perhaps the main reason why homocysteine levels are over the roof is because they are deficient in B vitamins especially folate. Imagine 11 umoles of homocysteine per liter is alarming. However, you don’t just have to rely on vitamin supplementation because you can actually get vitamin B6 from beans and dark leafy veggies not to mention that you benefit from the added fiber it provides. The fiber in these greens itself can boost folate levels, which is why it is advisable for those with deteriorating mental health to consume more plant-based food rather than eat mainly meat and proteins. Homocysteine is derived from methionine, a by-product of animal protein. So, as much as possible, avoid eating lots of meat or you unknowingly endanger your health and speed up potential brain loss. Patients with Alzheimer’s must increase vitamin B supplementation especially the three vitamins mentioned earlier because your body needs it all to be able to better regulate homocysteine levels. Shifting to a plant-based diet isn’t necessarily the solution to slow down further brain loss. Optimal health can only be achieved when your body can maintain that delicate balance of all the good things your body needs to stay strong and healthy even as you age. An example of which is having a balanced diet. Age may just be a number but it can trigger a lot of changes such as Alzheimer’s, a condition that can seriously impede the quality of your life in later years. In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. Lastly, you want to take your vitamin D3 with some form of fat like coconut oil or avocado to help absorption in your body. Of course, it's easier just to wash your face and hope it will all go away instead of going on a strict diet and figure out the main root of your skin problems, but if you want to have a fresh and free-from-acne skin, visiting the doctor is inevitable. - In most cases, flaking is not that big of a deal. It is a temporary condition with an easy treatment. However, when the flaking is intense and accompanied by other symptoms, it can be a sign of a serious disease. The reasons for flaking can be a vitamin deficiency, hormone imbalance or allergic reaction. - If you are inside a well-ventilated space with optimal temperature and you are not nervous, then you shouldn’t be sweating as if running a cross-country race. Again ketosis leads to ketones, but ketones don't lead to ketosis. So when your body is in ketosis that leads to Natural Ketone production for fuel not the other way around. 10 Important Signs Your Body Is Asking For Help. 1. PERSISTENT DRY SKIN Dry skin is often uncomfortable and annoying. Our largest organ, the skin will crack, itch and scale if we are not consuming enough vitamins – particularly, Vitamin E – in our daily meals. To alleviate some of these symptoms, try adding more fish, nuts and healthy oils to your diet. 2. BRITTLENESS OF THE HAIR AND/OR NAILS Similar to dry skin, brittle hair or nails usually indicates a nutrient or vitamin deficiency. Low levels of calcium and/or vitamin B can cause these areas to crack, dry, and scale. The solution is to include one or more of the following: whole-grain bread, whole grains, milk, legumes, or potatoes. 3. INCREASED DESIRE OR CONSUMPTION OF SODIUM OR SALTY FOODS Most minerals have a salty composition; so, when the body is craving salt-laden foods (e.g. potato chips, peanuts, dry meat, etc.), it is often an indication that additional mineral supplementation is needed. Also, craving salty foods may be a sign that there is inflammation or an infection somewhere in the body. 4. INCREASED DESIRE OR CONSUMPTION OF SUGARY FOODS Similar to other cravings on this list, the impulse to eat more sugar generally indicates a lack of proper dieting. This aside, there are plenty of ways to counteract these cravings: drink lots of water, eat fresh and leafy greens, and/or eat more healthy and frequently. 5. INCREASED DESIRE OR CONSUMPTION OF RAW FOODS Raw foods (e.g. sushi, sashimi, cheese) may indicate some imbalance within the gastrointestinal or digestive system. The reason: raw foods are effective in alleviating uncomfortable conditions such as gastroenteritis or cramping. Supplement these foods with fresh and leafy vegetables and fruits. 6. INCREASED DESIRE OR CONSUMPTION OF SEAFOOD Here, the problem can be two-fold; either there is a lack of nutrients or minerals (most likely protein), or there is some kind of iodine deficiency. Seafood – in many forms – is a healthy dietary choice. However, be sure to include fresh cuts of meat or poultry, or some sort of substitute for vegans/vegetarians, to ward off such cravings and balance your diet. 7. PSORIASIS Similar to other manifestations of dry skin, the presence of scaling or psoriasis on the arms or elbows is indicative of insufficient vitamin and/or minerals. Vitamins A and C are common culprits. This in mind, try to include foods such as apricots, carrots, or oranges. 8. CRAMPING, POOR SLEEP OR INSOMNIA Of all symptoms, these three are often the most troublesome. Magnesium – a known inhibitor of neuronal activity, and potassium – an important nutrient for brain, heart and muscle health, can alleviate many of these ailments. Foods such as green and leafy vegetables, almonds, nuts, apricots, plums, bananas, and many others, can help suppress or eliminate such physical and psychological symptoms. 9. BLEEDING FROM THE MOUTH OR GUMS Bleeding from the mouth or gums often occurs because of a lack of vitamin C. However, ensuring the proper practice of oral care is essential as well. Vitamin C can be found in many sources: fruits (especially oranges), veggies and garlic. 10. AN INCREASED DESIRE FOR SOUR FOODS AND/OR BEVERAGES Hormonal changes (e.g. in pregnant women) can result in desiring more sour foods or drinks. L-Carnitine is So Much More Than Just Fat Loss! I'm all about boosting the body, the brain, and business, and L-Carnitine does just that. Learn more about my thought process at http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Acetyl-L-carnitine is an antioxidant and amino acid naturally produced in the body and is one of many forms of carnitine. Carnitines help shuttle fat to mitochondria to be burned to produce energy. They also help to shuttle the waste products away during the process. Different carnitines have different functions. Acetyl-L-carnitine is mainly used for brain health purposes as it is able to pass through the blood-brain barrier due to the acetyl group. Acetyl-l-carnitine is used for a wide variety of disorders regarding brain health: Alzheimer’s, depression, age-related memory loss, thinking problems due to Lyme Disease and alcoholism, Down syndrome, nerve pain, etc. It is also used in men for low testosterone and infertility. Acetyl-L-Carnitine vs L-Carnitine, and Fat Loss: The body can convert acetyl-L-carnitine to L-carnitine and visa / versa. Do not substitute one for the others. Benefits are based on the kind of carnitine that you take. L-Carnitine is primarily taken for fat loss as it helps to mobilize stored fat and move it to the mitochondria for use as energy. 95% of the carnitine in the body is found in skeletal muscles. By increasing muscle carnitine concentration you increase muscle fat oxidation, thus burning more stored fat rather than glucose. Until recently, studies did not support that increased dietary carnitine would lead to increased muscle carnitine concentration. A 2011 study in The Journal of Physiology found that after 6 months of L-carnitine feeding combined with carbohydrate consumption led to a 21% increase in muscle carnitine content. This study further showed that this increase had an effect of muscle metabolism during exercise. Following low intensity exercise it was found that less muscle glycogen was used. There was no measure of lipid oxidation, but it follows theoretic models that lipid metabolism would take the place of the glucose metabolism. The study also found an increased level of muscle lactate following high intensity exercise. What was very exciting was the finding of a performance enhancement: work output was increased by 11% during a 30 minute trial. Further studies are needed - complication with how long studies need to be held to see an impact of carnitine supplementation. How it Helps Brain Function: Mitochondria are the energy power plants of the body and brain, and their decay has been linked to many age related diseases. Supplementation may help mitochondria produce energy in tissues like the brain. One study fed rats acetyl-L-carnitine - reversed age-related declines in L-carnitine levels and also reversed some age-related changes in liver mitochondrial function. Another study found that the supplementation of acetyl-L-carnitine and alpha lipoic acid led to memory improvement, reduced oxidative stress and improved mitochondrial energy metabolism. It is also used to synthesise acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in the brain. Acetylcholine has been shown to boost memory. Antioxidant and anti-Inflammatory agent properties: A 2010 study on alcohol induced oxidative damage in the brain found that acetyl-L-carnitine served as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Oxidative damage and inflammation in the brain are known to cause injury in the brain.
