Most Popular Drug in U.S. is an Antipsychotic

04:03
Does anyone remember Thorazine? It was an antipsychotic given to mentally ill people, often in institutions, that was so sedating, it gave rise to the term "Thorazine shuffle." Ads for Thorazine in medical journals, before drugs were advertised directly to patients, showed Aunt Hattie in a hospital gown, zoned out but causing no trouble to herself or anyone else. No wonder Thorazine and related drugs Haldol, Mellaril and Stelazine were called chemical straitjackets. But Thorazine and similar drugs became close to obsolete in 1993 when a second generation of antipsychotics which included Risperdal, Zyprexa, Seroquel, Geodon and Abilify came online. Quetiapine is a second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic. It’s approved by the FDA for schizophrenia, acute bipolar mania/mixed and depression, and bipolar maintenance (as an add-on to lithium or divalproex). The extended-release form is also approved as an add-on for depression. Though its approved uses are limited, it’s widely used off-label as a single therapy for depression, anxiety, insomnia, OCD, and other conditions. How Do Antidepressants And Antipsychotic Drugs Change Your Brain? with Robert Whitaker

07:48
Schizophrenics in the United States currently fare worse than patients in the world’s poorest countries. Medical journalist Robert Whitaker argues that modern treatments for the severely mentally ill are just old medicine in new bottles, and that we as a society are deeply deluded about their efficacy. The widespread use of lobotomies in the 1920's and 1930's gave way in the 1950's to electroshock and a wave of new drugs. In what is perhaps Robert Whitaker’s most damning revelation, he examines how drug companies in the 1980's and 1990's skewed their studies to prove that new anti-psychotic drugs were more effective than the old, while keeping patients in the dark about dangerous side effects. Robert Whitaker raises important questions about our obligations to the mad, the meaning of “insanity,” and what we value most about the human mind. Passionate believers in whole food plant based diets, no chemicals, minimal pharmaceutical drugs, no GMO's. Fighting to stop climate change and extinction.

Side Effects of Antipsychotic Drugs | Schizophrenia

03:41
Watch more How to Understand Schizophrenia videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/512799-Side-Effects-of-Antipsychotic-Drugs-Schizophrenia Anti-psychotic medications are very useful and have helped many people with schizophrenia to lead healthy and productive lives by taking care of some of the symptoms, including delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking, disorganized behavior, and negative symptoms, or lack of motivation that may come with schizophrenia. However, they don't come without side effects. I'm going to talk with you about four different categories of side effects that seem to be very common. One is what we call extrapyramidal symptoms. Those are motor or movement side effects of these medications. The older anti-psychotics tend to have more of these side effects. They include feeling stiff in your muscles, having tremor in your hands or in your body, feeling restless and unable to sit still, or having what we call tardive dyskynesia. That occurs over time, where you might have movements of your mouth or of your limbs that are repetitive and that appear after a period of treatment. Those are the extrapyramidal symptoms, or EPS. They're more common with the older medications. With the newer medications, the more common side effects tend to be what we call the metabolic side effects, or cardiometabolic side effects. Those include weight gain, an increased blood sugar or risk for diabetes, and an increased cholesterol. Initially, we were really excited about all of the new anti-psychotic medications. Then, when we saw how people gained weight and got more heart disease, partly related to the medications, we started to see that there was a big risk there, because really, it's heart disease and diabetes that tend to be the things that lead to early mortality in people with schizophrenia. So, that's the second category of side effects. There's also anticholinergic side effects. Those include dry mouth, feeling flushed or hot, having constipation. Those are things that tend to happen with the anticholinergic side effects. Different medications, both old and new, have more or less anticholinergic side effects. One last category that I'll mention is prolactin. Prolactin is a body hormone that you have. For some of our anti-psychotic medications, in particular Risperidone, is probably the biggest culprit, increase prolactin production. What happens, then, is that women especially may not have their periods, they may have difficulty conceiving a child. And, for some people, there's breast enlargement and even lactation, both men and women. That can be a very disruptive side effect, obviously, and needs to be addressed. If you have side effects with anti-psychotic medications, definitely, there's many choices of anti-psychotic medication, and so you should speak with your doctor or psychiatrist about it, because they can try different things to see what works best for you and causes the least burden of side effects to you. Many people have no side effects at all from anti-psychotic medications, thank goodness. If you have schizophrenia and you're thinking about medications, find a treatment provider you trust so you can work on finding the right medication for you.

PharmedOut, a new project that educates physicians on how pharmaceutical companies influence prescribing, is previewing a timely video about Zyprexa (olanzapine), an antipsychotic drug approved by the FDA to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In this video Shahram Ahari, a former pharmaceutical company representative, tells how he sold the drug. Nearly a decade after its introduction, a drug once hailed as a breakthrough treatment is being assailed for its negative side effects. Antipsychotic drugs are not risk-free, but doctors and patients have long complained that Zyprexa causes obesity and diabetes. This week, the New York Times reported that studies on the frequency of weight gain were underreported by the manufacturer. PharmedOut is an independent physician-run project funded through the Attorney General Consumer and Prescriber Education grant program.

I have Bipolar Type 1 Disorder and I have reached a point where I can identify when I am sliding into a hypo-manic, manic, full blown mania but sadly if I spiral into psychosis I am usually not self aware enough to care or do anything about it. I'm making these videos with the hopes that they will raise awareness, educate, inform and fight the stigma associated with Bipolar Disorder. "There is a particular kind of pain, elation, loneliness, and terror involved in this kind of madness. When you’re high it’s tremendous. The ideas and feelings are fast and frequent like shooting stars, and you follow them until you find better and brighter ones. Shyness goes, the right words and gestures are suddenly there, the power to captivate others a felt certainty. There are interests found in uninteresting people. Sensuality is pervasive and the desire to seduce and be seduced irresistible. Feelings of ease, intensity, power, well-being, financial omnipotence, and euphoria pervade one’s marrow. But, somewhere, this changes. The fast ideas are far too fast, and there are far too many; overwhelming confusion replaces clarity. Memory goes. Humor and absorption on friends’ faces are replaced by fear and concern. Everything previously moving with the grain is now against—you are irritable, angry, frightened, uncontrollable, and enmeshed totally in the blackest caves of the mind. You never knew those caves were there. It will never end, for madness carves its own reality. It goes on and on, and finally there are only others’ recollections of your behavior—your bizarre, frenetic, aimless behaviors—for mania has at least some grace in partially obliterating memories. What then, after the medications, psychiatrist, despair, depression, and overdose? All those incredible feelings to sort through. Who is being too polite to say what? Who knows what? What did I do? Why? And most hauntingly, when will it happen again? Then, too, are the bitter reminders—medicine to take, resent, forget, take, resent, and forget, but always to take. Credit cards revoked, bounced checks to cover, explanations due at work, apologies to make, intermittent memories (what did I do?), friendships gone or drained, a ruined marriage. And always, when will it happen again? Which of my feelings are real? Which of the me’s is me? The wild, impulsive, chaotic, energetic, and crazy one? Or the shy, withdrawn, desperate, suicidal, doomed, and tired one? Probably a bit of both, hopefully much that is neither. Virginia Woolf, in her dives and climbs, said it all: “How far do our feelings take their colour from the dive underground? I mean, what is the reality of any feeling?” ~ An Unquiet Mind I am not a professional film maker .....I am posting this video to bring awareness to Mental Illness and more specifically Bipolar Mania which there seems to be a shortage of in general because it is very difficult for most people to recognize that they are in the middle of a manic episode and slow down enough to capture video. Anyhow please feel free to contact me if you have any questions

The Problem With New Zyprexa Containing Antipsychotic for Schizophrenia ALKS 3831 from Alkermes

07:12
The pharmaceutical company Alkermes is currently researching ALKS 3831 an antipsychotic for the treatment of schizophrenia that combines olanzapine, already sold under the brand name Zyprexa, with samidorphan, an opiod antagonist. The purpose of it is to reduce the weight gain that usually comes with antipsychotics. But will it be worth it compared to currently avoid antipsychotics like Geodon or Abilify? ABILIFY® Aripiprazole‎ 1 Week Review + Side Effects

04:08
Don't forget to leave a like! Note: What I meant to say in the video is LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR, BUT do NOT take his advice to heart. Listen to yourself, your body, and your mind. Tell your doctor what is happening and keep in mind that he gets paid a lot no matter what he says. Also always get a second opinion. The more opinions/advice you have, the easier it will be for you to decide what is right for you. Aripiprazole, sold under the brand name Abilify among others, is an atypical antipsychotic. It is recommended and primarily used in the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.[5] Other uses include as an add-on treatment in major depressive disorder, tic disorders, and irritability associated with autism.[6] According to a Cochrane review, evidence for the oral form in schizophrenia is not sufficient to determine effects on general functioning.[7] Additionally, because many people dropped out of the medication trials before they were completed, the overall strength of the conclusions is low.[7] Side effects include neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a movement disorder known as tardive dyskinesia, and high blood sugar in those with diabetes.[5] In the elderly there is an increased risk of death.[5] It is thus not recommended for use in those with psychosis due to dementia.[5] It is pregnancy category C in the United States and category C in Australia, meaning there is possible evidence of harm to the fetus.[5][8] It is not recommended for women who are breastfeeding.[5] It is unclear whether it is safe or effective in people less than 18 years old.[5] It is a partial dopamine agonist. Aripiprazole was developed by Otsuka in Japan. In the United States, Otsuka America markets it jointly with Bristol-Myers Squibb. From April 2013 to March 2014, sales of Abilify amounted to almost $6.9 billion.[9] POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS: Dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, excess saliva/drooling, blurred vision, weight gain, constipation, headache, and trouble sleeping may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

How to Lose Weight While Taking Antidepressants?

08:51
Losing weight is difficult as it is but it is even bigger challenge when you are taking antidepressants. Discover why Dr. Sam Robbins, health expert, recommends Lean Optimizer™, as one of the solutions for weight loss while taking Antidepressants. http://drsam.co/yt/WhileTakingAntidepressants-LO ************************** How to Lose Weight While Taking Antidepressants? ********************** Losing weight is never fun and for most of us, it is not easy especially as we get older. Losing weight is difficult as it is but it is even bigger challenge when you are taking antidepressants. Moreover, the reason is due to your change in hormones. Over the years, I have discovered TWO main reasons for the weight gain from use of antidepressants: The first is the most commonly prescribe antidepressants, SSRIs - such as Prozac, Lexapro, Paxil, Zoloft - they work by increasing serotonin, which helps regulate your appetite. So typically, antidepressant users start eating more because their appetite has increased which is the initial and primary cause of weight gain. Secondly, there is another phenomenon that I have noticed over the years: With people who swear they are not eating more and yet, they still gain weight. After doing lots of different blood work I have noticed a change in metabolic markers: One of them being lowered thyroid production as well as a change adrenal function such as higher cortisol levels (stress hormone) and lower adrenal production. Both are leading to slower metabolism and faster weight gain. As you can see, hormones really do control everything, throw in aging and now things get a bit more challenging. In this video, I am going to give you proven solutions that will help reduce your appetite and maximize your fat loss. So, do not worry – it is not your fault. There is hope! Medications for Depression & Bipolar | Robert D. McMullen, MD

08:44
Robert D. McMullen, MD about Medications for Depression & Bipolar http://tmsbraincare.com/medications-bipolar-depression-hd-video/ Medications for treatment of Depression & Bipolar disorders Major depressive disorder is also known as major depression, clinical depression, or unipolar depression. The term unipolar refers to the presence of one pole, or one extreme of mood- depressed mood. This may be compared with bipolar depression which has the two poles of depressed mood and mania (i.e., euphoria, heightened emotion and activity). Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) causes serious shifts in mood, energy, thinking, and behavior—from the highs of mania on one extreme, to the lows of depression on the other These are of 2 types • Bipolar I disorder involves periods of severe mood episodes from mania to depression. The highs may even require hospitalization of the person. • Bipolar II disorder is a milder form of mood elevation, involving milder episodes of hypomania that alternate with periods of severe depression The depression that people with bipolar disorder experience is generally of a melancholic or psychotic type and therefore more biological in its nature. The depression found in these bipolar patients can be difficult to treat than unipolar depression as the antidepressants can cause them to have greater mood swings. These patients need to be on mood-stabilizing drugs. The antidepressants alone can actually increase the manic episodes and worsen the disorder. Antidepressants: divided into three main classes: • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) - were developed in the 1980's and are the most common prescribed today. They are sold under brand names such as Prozac, Paxil, Prozac, Luvox, Zoloft, Celexa • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) There are three types of MAOIs, phenelzine,(Nardil) isocarboxazid and tranylcypromine, ( Parnate) and moclobemide.) • Tricyclic drugs (TCAs). (sold as Amitriptyline, Imipramine) For effective control and to limit the side effects a combination can be used such as Wellbutrin (or bupropion). Mechanisms of action are different hence lower doses of both help control side effects. The combination of Zoloft and wellbutruim earned the popular name Welloft. The MAO inhibitors are more effective than the SSRI drugs. But can cause severe weight gain and therefore patients need to work on diet control, else the spike in blood pressure can be dangerous. They are contraindicated with drugs that work on serotonin. Lamictal (or Lamotrigine) was FDA approved for treating depression in 2003.The main advantage being, no sexual dysfunction, no sexual side effects and no weight gain. There is no sedative effect and dosage is generally much less than used for seizures. If any of the above mentioned combinations are ineffective in controlling depression, the thyroid hormone replacement drug Cytopan or Cytomel or Synthroid can be added to any of the above drug. Atypical anti-psychotics such as low doses of Zyprexa, or Abilify, or Seroquel, and the latest Quetiapine can also be prescribed. 150 mg of Lithium, normally prescribe for Bipolar at much higher doses, can be used safely without having to get regular blood checks. zyprexa...genaric or brand name?

06:57
hi my name is john, my government went cheap on me and now i have come back at them. the genaric meds don't work for me. i have been supplementing my meds with the brand name pills. the genaric stuff doesn't work.... sorry i would like to mention the rice patty one was a 10mg pill, the other two where 5mg pills. so where i am coming from is that i had to switch to generic drugs because my medical plan would no longer cover my brand name pills. during the switch I had to use my old stock brand name pills to get by, in the last four day's i have only taken the brand name pills. the headaches i was having have gone away and i can smoke marijuana without paranoia. if you have a family member who has been switched to generic meds and is showing signs of relapse help them do not condemn them, help pay for the brand name drugs and i am sure they will revert too who they were before they took the generic meds

When will you feel like yourself again after coming off psych drugs?

07:05
It’s taken a long time for me to feel like myself, even a little bit, after discontinuing a psych drug cocktail. It’s happening slowly, but I’m getting there. This is quick little unscripted video that will hopefully give you a little inspiration as you make your way through the process of discontinuing psychiatric drugs. If you can keep going, no matter how far away from yourself you may feel, you’ll get closer and closer in time to who you were—and are—meant to be. Thanks for watching! Note: I still have limited mental stamina and am a bit disorganized in my thinking (not in a schizophrenic kind of way, but in a brain-that’s-still-recovering kind of way) so I apologize for the video being a little rambly and not as on-point as it could be. I’ll get better. Thanks again for watching. Hang in there. Instagram: https://goo.gl/mbtjFS

Sold under the brand name Clozaril, it's most notorious side effect is agranulocytosis, a condition that can wreck your immune system. But clozapine has numerous other dangerous side effects as well. In this video I discuss them. I also discuss the unprecedented restrictions placed on this medications.
