iEngageU Health Literacy Forum

01:49:04
Low health literacy represents a serious challenge in our community. This problem results in communications breakdowns between patients and their providers, oftentimes resulting in improper or inefficient care that negatively impacts both sides. In an effort to address this challenge, Health Literacy San Diego (HLSD), a project of Community Health Improvement Partners (CHIP) and the San Diego Council on Literacy (SDCOL), has produced a new report titled, Improving Health Communications: A Collaborative Plan to Address Health Literacy in San Diego County. Funded by Alliance Healthcare Foundation with additional support from Molina Healthcare, this report serves as an update to the 2007 health literacy report, When Words Get in the Way: A Collaborative Plan to Address Health Literacy in San Diego County. Now, in an effort to discuss this updated report and to create an open forum for ideas, potential solutions, and creative strategies, AHF is launching its iEngageU Community Engagement Series Feb. 25 at United Way of San Diego.  Join us as we convene some of the community’s brightest minds and most dedicated leaders to tackle the health and wellness issues currently facing the San Diego County region, beginning with health literacy, at this forum. The Bigger Picture

00:31
Allie Miller '11 asks the Obama administration how the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act will help students whose family members may be unemployed for parts of the year. (Video produced by Marianna Nash '11) Allie Miller is Premed, an active member of SGA, MERT and other orgs, and a dedicated volunteer in Holyoke. Majoring in Studio Arts with a minor in Biology, she hopes to attend medical school and eventually combine her interest in education and medicine by educating communities about health. While Allison has taken advantage of every opportunity offered to her in college, she is now struggling to afford tuition. When I began as a first-year, my parents and I agreed to pay 50/50. I had a bit of money saved up from high school and the economy was still fairly stable. That first year began just fine...But as the year progressed the economy began to crack. According to UPI, blue collar jobs were hit hardest during the recession. As a union carpenter, Millers father relies on infrastructure construction to earn a living. But ever since the economic downturn, he has found less need for his kind of work. For the past several years he has been unemployed for a large portion of the year. Unfortunately, Mount Holyoke has not been able to make up any of Millers tuition expenses. It is no secret that Mount Holyokes endowment has dropped drastically. And in doing so, the College is able to afford less and less, squeezing the money from one area to the other. This squeeze has so significantly affected the way I pay for school here that in four semesters my tuition has doubled. Doubled from a price that me and my family could afford in a stable economy, to an amount twice that in a period of 10% employment in the US and poor prospects of improvement, said Miller. I want to know if the new bill will help families like mine, or relieve them of some of their burdens. While this is very difficult for my family, there are many other families in the US going through the same problem, who are in even worse situations some on this campus. I simply want to ask this so that someone may hear my voice and see that unemployment affects everyone. (Profile by Sophie Heller '12)
