Holyoke Works and Holyoke Community College have partnered to facilitate a 15-week English as a Second Language Home Health Aide and CNA program for people whose primary language is not English. This program teaches the English language, as well as the skills necessary in caring for someone in need. Many of the program participants were nurses and doctors in their home countries, but because of their language barriers and the different licensing requirements in the United States, they cannot continue their practice in medicine. ESOL Home Health Aide program allows non-native English health care professionals to relaunch their career at the entry level. Connecting Point producer Alejandro Cameron spoke with Ellen Chechile and Kermit Dunkelburg of Holyoke Community College to find out more about the program.

The Ultimate Teachable Moment: A Journey Through End-of-Life Care | Kelly Keane | TEDxHolyokeCC

12:49
Occasionally a serendipitous occurrence morphs into a unique learning experience. What began as a random phone call last November from a nursing alumna grew into a front page New York Times article and video, a deeper appreciation of legal issues surrounding death and dying, and a shift in how we perceive nursing clinical experiences. In my role as Nursing Educational Specialist, I assist students through a variety of modalities, such as weekly Supplemental Instruction reviews held after each lecture and content reviews held prior to exams. I also run workshops as needed in areas such as test-taking strategies, dosages, and calculations. I provide one-on-one assistance, as well as lab workshops for specialized skills practice. I am also a tutor through the Northeast Consortium of E-tutoring; through which students can access tutors from across the state. I was contacted directly by Martha Keochareon, who wanted to “give back,” a few months before her death. I gratefully facilitated and participated in this touching experience with students from the Holyoke Community College nursing program. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Holyoke is Open for Business

01:59
Holyoke has a rich past, resilient people, and a promising future. Over the past four years, we’ve seen over 300 new jobs and the lowest unemployment rate since 2008. Highest number of new construction and rehab projects in a decade. The lowest level of crime in 5 years. Rising home values. Over $5 million invested in new parks, roads and sidewalks. Graduating more students than at any other time in the last 10 years. Over 150 million dollars in private investments throughout the city. This is what progress looks like, and we're not done yet. Holyoke is open for business. The last thing we want to do is turn back now. Here’s my plan for the next two years to continue on this path to success. We will help our manufacturers expand creating at least 100 new jobs. We will reduce deficits without cutting city services by making government more efficient. We will increase vocational offerings by focusing on the skills of the jobs of today and tomorrow on industries like manufacturing and health care. We will complete the construction and rehabilitation of over 450 new housing units currently in the pipeline for downtown. And we will take the opioid and heroin crisis head on by focusing on prevention, treatment, and re-entry. Serving as your mayor has been the greatest honor of my life. I ask for your vote on Tuesday, November 3, so we can finish this work together. Read more at http://morseformayor.com/openforbusiness

Funded by Alliance Healthcare Foundation with additional support from Molina Healthcare, this report serves as an update to the 2007 health literacy report, When Words Get in the Way: A Collaborative Plan to Address Health Literacy in San Diego County. Potomac State College Scholarship Dinner 2014

05:16
Each fall Potomac State College provides an opportunity for our scholarship donors and their student recipient/s to meet one another over dinner. Donors like to hear how the students are doing and what they plan to do in the future. For the students, it’s a great way to meet the people who have helped them on their academic journey and to say “THANK YOU”. This event began several years ago and continues to grow. This year we included a student speaker, McKenzie Bouch, to speak on how the David & Leontine B. Nuzum Scholarship has helped her. McKenzie did an outstanding job of researching the Nuzums and she explained how they played a big part in contributing positively to the overall good of Potomac State College during their time of working here. Our Diversity is Our Strength | Bernie Sanders

He is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Sanders previously served as mayor of Vermont’s largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to be the sole congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane and has four children and seven grandchildren. Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents and grew up in a small, rent-controlled apartment. His father came to the United States from Poland at the age of 17 without much money or a formal education. While attending the University of Chicago, a 20-year-old Sanders led students in a multi-week sit-in to oppose segregation in off-campus housing owned by the university as a Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) officer. In August of 1963, Sanders took an overnight bus as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech firsthand at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. After graduation, Bernie moved to Vermont where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington as an Independent by a mere 10 votes, shocking the city’s political establishment by defeating a six-term, local machine mayor. In 1983, Bernie was re-elected by a 21 point margin with a record amount of voter turnout. Under his administration, the city made major strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s rights, youth programs and the arts. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives as the first Independent in 40 years and joined the Democratic caucus. He was re-elected for eight terms, during which he voted against the deregulation of Wall Street, the Patriot Act, and the invasion of Iraq. In 2006, Sanders defeated the richest man in Vermont to win a seat in the U.S. Senate as an Independent. Known as a “practical and successful legislator,” Sanders served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he authored and passed the most significant veteran health care reform bill in recent history. While in the Senate, Sanders has fought tirelessly for working class Americans against the influence of big money in politics. In 2010, he gave an eight-and-a-half hour filibuster-like speech on the Senate floor in opposition to extending Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. In 2015, the Democratic leadership tapped Bernie to serve as the caucus’ ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee. Known for his consistency on the issues, Senator Sanders has supported the working class, women, communities of color, and the LGBT community throughout his career. He is an advocate for the environment, unions, and immigrants. He voted against Keystone XL, opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, wants to expand the Voting Rights Act, and pass the Equal Rights Amendment. Tennessee Adult Education

00:34
According to an announcement from state officials last month, Tennessee College of Applied Technology and its 27 affiliated campuses across the state are offering information about the Tennessee Reconnect grants, which provides last-dollar scholarships for adults in pursuit of higher education and vocational training. The new plan is similar to the Tennessee Promise program, which offers similar opportunities for high school seniors. Both the Tennessee Reconnect and Tennessee Promise programs are part of the State’s Drive to 55 plan to bring the number of Tennessee adults with some kind of post-secondary training to 55 percent in the coming years. Participants must apply by May 15, 2015, to secure tuition-free enrollment. According to reports, program participants will have many choices in areas of training and study through a number of local educational institutions, however each institution is reportedly hoping to specialize in a niche program. For example, in Murfreesboro the most popular programs are allied health, which includes dental assisting, and industrial equipment maintenance, or mechatronics. Officials and school authorities hope that the Tennessee Reconnect program will boost enrollment and provide much needed revenue stream that will enable campuses to grow. As new students of all ages clamor to enroll in these programs, Tennessee Colleges and Adult Educators could see increased risk and liability exposures. Campuses are constantly faced with an increasing number of loss and liability complications based on an ever evolving array of issues. As such, it is important the Tennessee educators secure the coverage they need to keep their staff, students and facilities financial secure. At Barnes Insurance Agency, we work with top-quality insurers to provide insurance programs for the educational sector. Our Tennessee College and Adult Education Insurance program includes property and liability solutions tailored to the risks faced by educational organizations.
