Holyoke is Open for Business
Holyoke has a rich past, resilient people, and a promising future. Over the past four years, we’ve seen over 300 new jobs and the lowest unemployment rate since 2008. Highest number of new construction and rehab projects in a decade. The lowest level of crime in 5 years. Rising home values. Over $5 million invested in new parks, roads and sidewalks. Graduating more students than at any other time in the last 10 years. Over 150 million dollars in private investments throughout the city. This is what progress looks like, and we're not done yet. Holyoke is open for business. The last thing we want to do is turn back now. Here’s my plan for the next two years to continue on this path to success. We will help our manufacturers expand creating at least 100 new jobs. We will reduce deficits without cutting city services by making government more efficient. We will increase vocational offerings by focusing on the skills of the jobs of today and tomorrow on industries like manufacturing and health care. We will complete the construction and rehabilitation of over 450 new housing units currently in the pipeline for downtown. And we will take the opioid and heroin crisis head on by focusing on prevention, treatment, and re-entry. Serving as your mayor has been the greatest honor of my life. I ask for your vote on Tuesday, November 3, so we can finish this work together. Read more at http://morseformayor.com/openforbusiness

ESOL Home Health Aide and CNA Program at HCC | Connecting Point | Feb. 27, 2018
Holyoke Works and Holyoke Community College have partnered to facilitate a 15-week English as a Second Language Home Health Aide and CNA program for people whose primary language is not English. This program teaches the English language, as well as the skills necessary in caring for someone in need. Many of the program participants were nurses and doctors in their home countries, but because of their language barriers and the different licensing requirements in the United States, they cannot continue their practice in medicine. ESOL Home Health Aide program allows non-native English health care professionals to relaunch their career at the entry level. Connecting Point producer Alejandro Cameron spoke with Ellen Chechile and Kermit Dunkelburg of Holyoke Community College to find out more about the program.

TCC Commencement May 2015 Keynote Speaker: Senator Mark Warner
Mark Warner was the keynote speaker for Tidewater Community College’s 60th Commencement on May 16 at 10 a.m. at Old Dominion University’s Ted Constant Convocation Center. More than 1,700 TCC students graduated with associate degrees or certificates. Warner was elected to the U.S. Senate in November 2008, and serves on the Senate Finance, Banking, Budget and Intelligence committees. During his time in the Senate, Warner has established himself as a national leader in efforts to find bipartisan consensus to create balanced solutions to reduce the federal debt and deficit. He also has been a champion for military men and women, their families and military veterans – an important part of TCC’s enrollment. Nearly one-third of TCC’s student population is affiliated with the military. The college opened the Center for Military and Veterans Education, a comprehensive clearinghouse for academic and student support services, in 2012. From 2002 to 2006, Warner served as governor of Virginia, where he worked in a bipartisan way to turn record budget deficits into a surplus. Warner also focused on improving public education and expanding economic opportunity in every region of the state. He recruited 135,000 new jobs to Virginia during his four-year term. When Warner left office in 2006, Virginia was consistently recognized as the nation’s “best-managed state,” the “best state for business” and the state offering the best educational opportunities to its young people. Before entering public office, Warner was an early investor in the cellular telephone business. He co-founded the company that became Nextel, and ultimately made early investments in hundreds of start-up technology companies that have created tens-of-thousands of private sector jobs.

Congress Debates Interest Rates on Student Loans
From VOA Learning English, this is the Education Report. Lawmakers in Washington are debating education issues, including the interest rates that students pay for loans. College students who take loans graduate owing an average of $26,000. But some economists say the real issue is controlling the cost of college. Experts say these high costs are hurting the whole economy. For the past 30 years, college tuition has been increasing at twice the rate of inflation. Universities say decreasing financial support from state governments forces them to charge higher tuition. On average, private colleges now charge more than $30,000 a year. Terry Hartle is a spokesman for the American Council on Education, which represents thousands of colleges across the United States. He says funding for education has been shrinking for years. Experts worry that the high cost of education makes it less likely that good students from poor families can attend college. This means fewer scientists, engineers and others who could help increase economic growth. Also, a survey shows that some students concerned about repaying thousands of dollars in loans are delaying marriage and children. Many cannot afford to invest in a house or buy a car. Georgetown University labor economist Anthony Carnevale says the current system cuts economic growth for the whole country. And the effects are important. He says meeting the demand for workers with higher education could add $500 billion to the American economy. A new government report says one-third of Americans age 25 to 29 now hold college degrees -- up from one-fourth in 1995. For VOA Learning English, I'm Mario Ritter.

The Ultimate Teachable Moment: A Journey Through End-of-Life Care | Kelly Keane | TEDxHolyokeCC
Occasionally a serendipitous occurrence morphs into a unique learning experience. What began as a random phone call last November from a nursing alumna grew into a front page New York Times article and video, a deeper appreciation of legal issues surrounding death and dying, and a shift in how we perceive nursing clinical experiences. In my role as Nursing Educational Specialist, I assist students through a variety of modalities, such as weekly Supplemental Instruction reviews held after each lecture and content reviews held prior to exams. I also run workshops as needed in areas such as test-taking strategies, dosages, and calculations. I provide one-on-one assistance, as well as lab workshops for specialized skills practice. I am also a tutor through the Northeast Consortium of E-tutoring; through which students can access tutors from across the state. I was contacted directly by Martha Keochareon, who wanted to “give back,” a few months before her death. I gratefully facilitated and participated in this touching experience with students from the Holyoke Community College nursing program. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

The Bigger Picture
Allie Miller '11 asks the Obama administration how the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act will help students whose family members may be unemployed for parts of the year. (Video produced by Marianna Nash '11) Allie Miller is Premed, an active member of SGA, MERT and other orgs, and a dedicated volunteer in Holyoke. Majoring in Studio Arts with a minor in Biology, she hopes to attend medical school and eventually combine her interest in education and medicine by educating communities about health. While Allison has taken advantage of every opportunity offered to her in college, she is now struggling to afford tuition. When I began as a first-year, my parents and I agreed to pay 50/50. I had a bit of money saved up from high school and the economy was still fairly stable. That first year began just fine...But as the year progressed the economy began to crack. According to UPI, blue collar jobs were hit hardest during the recession. As a union carpenter, Millers father relies on infrastructure construction to earn a living. But ever since the economic downturn, he has found less need for his kind of work. For the past several years he has been unemployed for a large portion of the year. Unfortunately, Mount Holyoke has not been able to make up any of Millers tuition expenses. It is no secret that Mount Holyokes endowment has dropped drastically. And in doing so, the College is able to afford less and less, squeezing the money from one area to the other. This squeeze has so significantly affected the way I pay for school here that in four semesters my tuition has doubled. Doubled from a price that me and my family could afford in a stable economy, to an amount twice that in a period of 10% employment in the US and poor prospects of improvement, said Miller. I want to know if the new bill will help families like mine, or relieve them of some of their burdens. While this is very difficult for my family, there are many other families in the US going through the same problem, who are in even worse situations some on this campus. I simply want to ask this so that someone may hear my voice and see that unemployment affects everyone. (Profile by Sophie Heller '12)
