SC Mission 2010 in Greenville, SC - www.SCHA.org

06:07
SC Mission 2010 helps patients in the Upstate of South Carolina. The clinic, held August 6 and 7 at the Carolina First convention center in Greenville, was the first time that free medical, dental and vision services have been offered at the same location in the state. The clinic was really two clinics held at the same time. SC Mission 2010, providing medical and vision services, was sponsored by SCHA, along with the SC Optometric Association and AccessHealth SC, which is funded by the Duke Endowment. The SC Dental Association's hosted the dental clinic, called Dental Access Days. SC Mission 2010's goal was to provide services and match patients to a medical home where they can continue to receive the care they need, according to Melanie Matney, AccessHealth SC executive director. A total of 500 volunteers including physicians, nurses, dentists, optometrists, pharmacy and labor specialists, nursing and medical students, and lay persons helped make the clinic possible. An estimated 2000 persons received services during the two-day event.

Richard Wagamese - Indian Horse

57:11
Presented by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. In this emotional tale of Saul Indian Horse, Richard Wagamese tells the realistic story of a man whose life is drastically changed by one of Canada's most painful histories. When Saul was a child he was taken away from his family and forced into an Indian Residential School where he witnessed and experienced unimaginable abuses at the hands of the school's educators. In spite of the harrowing atrocities, it is at the school that Saul discovers his love of hockey, a game that, for a short time, serves as a means of escape. Saul's talent leads to a draft with a minor league team and a spot on Team Canada during the 1972 Canada-Soviet Summit Series. However, as Saul grows into a man, he struggles with racism and alcohol addiction. Saul's tumultuous adulthood eventually leads him back to his roots, where he confronts his past and begins a new journey towards healing. Richard Wagamese is an Ojibway author from the Wabaseemoong First Nation in Northwestern Ontario. He is the author of several fiction and non-fiction works including For Joshua: An Ojibway Father Teaches His Son, Runaway Dreams, and Indian Horse. Wagamese has also been a journalist and, in 1991, became the first Aboriginal Canadian to receive the National Newspaper Award for Column Writing. His most recent novel, Indian Horse, was chosen as the winner of First Nation Communities Read, and is on the Globe and Mail's bestseller's list as well as the Canadian Booksellers Association's bestseller's list. Among his awards, Wagamese's memoir One Native Life was listed as one of The Globe and Mail's 100 Best Books of 2008. In 2010 he accepted an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Thompson Rivers University. Wagamese currently lives just outside of Kamloops, BC with his wife, Debra Powell, and Molly the Story Dog.

Sons Of Helamen Testimonies: Breaking The chains event 2015 Part 4

25:05
The Sons of Helaman is a group of young men who have dedicated themselves to helping each other overcome unwanted pornography and/or masturbation addictions. In a “Knights of the Round Table” environment, they encourage and help their brethren in the fight against this demon that assails them. Led by a certified, licensed professional clinician, they practice and develop the warrior instincts that are required to conquer these addictions for the rest of their lives. They learn the strategies that the adversary will use against them, and are trained how to use the most powerful weapons known to science and spirituality to defeat him. Young men ages 14-28 should be considered for the program. Return missionaries who need extra training are also invited. This program is ideal for helping a young man prepare for his mission and/or temple marriage. Graduation from the group includes having successfully conquered the addiction for 12 consecutive weeks. By this time the young man has acquired a healthy fear of the power of Satan and a reverent alliance with the power of God. He will have practiced calling upon the power of God to serve himself as well as those he has grown to love. He will have gained a familiarity with the words of the prophets and will discover how they apply to real life. He will have gained an unusual amount of control over his thoughts, feelings, and body chemistry, that will serve him throughout his lifetime. The young men attending the groups find it to be much more enjoyable (after the initial discomfort ) and much more effective than individual therapy. Parents and Bishops have been pleased with the cost efficiency being about ¼th the cost of individual therapy. When a group has more than 8 members, another group is formed. As one individual graduates, a new member is added. A young man usually stays with the same group from start to finish in order to maintain brotherhood. Long Distance Participation We are proud to announce that after working through many kinks, we now offer involvement for those who live beyond our geographical reach. Our best service for those of you who live out of range of our existing groups or are too shy to attend group sessions, is the powerful Text-Coaching. Or text “?” to 801-635-6474 for more details.” Enrollment Parents or the Bishop (or the young man himself if he is 18 or older) contact Sons of Helaman headquarters at the number listed below. Headquarters will contact the appropriate group facilitator and set up the initial interview. In the initial interview, the young man and his parents (if they desire) will be trained in the basic information necessary to become successful in the group. The young man will be expected to commit to attending the group every week until he has achieved 12 consecutive perfect weeks. Groups are held at different times and in different locations. We have scheduled the sessions after school hours as not to be disruptive. The current cost of the group is $45 for each 1:45 hour session. The initial training session is only $125. If finances are a concern, many of the young men are receiving financial assistance from their ward through Fast Offerings. Most Bishops are familiar with and have confidence in our program. If yours is not, please invite him to contact us and get all his questions answered. If the Bishop does decide to use Fast Offerings to help, the young man will be expected to provide service for his ward in exchange for the resources provided. This helps the young man experience responsibility and gratitude. If you are unsure or have more questions, please read the testimonials below and on our testimonials page. Also, call us at 1-877-HERO-877. We have great desires to help all young men be relieved of these chains. — Maurice W. Harker, Director

Why genetic research must be more diverse | Keolu Fox

06:49
Ninety-six percent of genome studies are based on people of European descent. The rest of the world is virtually unrepresented — and this is dangerous, says geneticist and TED Fellow Keolu Fox, because we react to drugs differently based on our genetic makeup. Fox is working to democratize genome sequencing, specifically by advocating for indigenous populations to get involved in research, with the goal of eliminating health disparities. "The research community needs to immerse itself in indigenous culture," he says, "or die trying." Kate Hennessy - Repatriation, Digital Media, and Culture in the Virtual Museum

40:37
Webcast sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and hosted by the School of Library, Archival, and Information Studies (SLAIS). Many Canadian First Nations and Aboriginal organizations are using digital media to revitalize their languages and assert control over the representation of their cultures. At the same time, museums, academic institutions, and individuals are digitizing their ethnographic collections to make them accessible to originating communities. In this presentation I will explore how the term "virtual repatriation" is being applied to the digitization and return of heritage to Aboriginal communities, and draw attention to the opportunities, challenges, and critiques associated with digitization, circulation, and remix of Aboriginal cultural heritage. I will discuss recent projects including the collaborative production of a Virtual Museum of Canada exhibit with the Doig River First Nation, a Dane-zaa community in northeastern British Columbia, and a current collaborative production of a virtual exhibit with members of the Inuvialuit community in the western Arctic and curators at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. I will show that while access to cultural heritage in digital collections can facilitate the articulation of intellectual property rights to digital cultural heritage----including the right to restrict circulation----it also amplifies the difficulty of enforcing those rights. Kate Hennessy is an Assistant Professor specializing in Media at Simon Fraser University's School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT). She has a PhD in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia and an MA in the Anthropology of Media from the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies. As the director of the Making Culture Lab at SIAT, her research explores the role of digital technology in the documentation and safeguarding of cultural heritage, and in the mediation of culture, history, objects, and subjects in new forms. Her video and multimedia works investigate documentary methodologies to address Indigenous and settler histories of place and space. She is a founding member of the Ethnographic Terminalia Curatorial Collective, an international group exploring the borders of anthropological, curatorial, and artistic practice (http://ethnographicterminalia.org). As assistant editor of the journal Visual Anthropology Review, she designed its first multimedia volume. Her work has been published in journals such as American Indian Quarterly, Museum Anthropology Review, and Visual Anthropology Review. She was a Trudeau Foundation Scholar from 2006-2010, a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Graduate Scholar from 2005-2009, a Canadian Polar Commission Scholar in 2006-2007, and a Commonwealth Scholar in 2001-2002.

SOUNDBITE (English) Terri Chung, Sister of Kenneth Bae: "We miss you very much and we're doing everything we can to appeal to our government, our leaders, to do everything in their power to bring you home as soon as possible. We love you and miss you very much." BAE FAMILY PHOTO VIA AP IMAGES - USED WITH PERMISSION Lynnwood, Washington June 9, 2006 9. Photo of the Bae family (with Kenneth bottom left) STORYLINE: The family of an American tour operator and Christian missionary who has been detained in North Korea for the past nine months is renewing calls for his release as concerns about his health mount. "If the leaders of North Korea were watching we would like to say that we are seriously sorry for any crimes he may have committed there. We would ask that you issue mercy and that you grant him clemency and that you allow him to come home." his sister Terri Chung said on Thursday. Kenneth Bae was arrested last November, when he was accused of "hostile acts" against the governmenT. He was sentenced to 15 years of hard labour - farming beans, potatoes and other vegetables. His recent letters home have portrayed troubling health conditions, including blurred vision that could be associated with his diabetes, his sister, Terri Chung, said Wednesday during an interview at her mother's home in the north Seattle suburb of Lynnwood. "I'm experiencing some numbness in my hands. The doctor says its stress related and my leg and back pain is not very good. Day by day I'm trying my best to endure and persevere." Bae had written in a letter sent to his sister. Bae, a 45-year-old father of three, was born in South Korea and immigrated to the US with his parents and sister in 1985. For the past seven years he has been living in China, and a couple of years ago began leading small tour groups, mostly of American and Canadian citizens, into a "special economic zone" designed to encourage commerce in the northeastern region of Roson in North Korea, Chung said. Chung said the family had few details about why her brother was imprisoned. She said she is familiar with a video of him taken several years ago, in which he advocates bringing Americans to North Korea for a mass prayer session to bring about the reunification of North and South Korea. Marshall Islands Tours Video

04:28
Marshall Islands Tours Video - The air is tangy with sea salt on the thousand or so slender, flat coral islands that make up the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). Living on these narrow strips of land between ocean and lagoon, the Marshallese are expert fishers and navigators, having long been reliant on the sea. Local faces reflect the islands' history. In the late 1700s, after 2000 years of isolation, these Micronesian islands were variously visited, settled, colonised or occupied by British, Russians, Germans, Japanese and Americans (at first by missionaries, later by defence forces). Today the more developed atolls have a sense of all these influences, with well-stocked stores carrying international groceries, restaurants serving the food of several nations, and basketball courts on many street corners. On the quieter backstreets the Marshallese continue to live in family compounds, surrounded by flowers. The two main atolls have quite different characters. While it's Westernised, the capital, Majuro Atoll, retains much of the languid feel of the tropics. In contrast, Kwajalein Atoll is leased to the US military for missile testing and is virtually closed to nonmilitary visitors, its local workers shuttled to the wall-to-wall tenements of Ebeye. The RMI's charm lies in its outer islands which - except for the traumatic nuclear history of some - still retain the pristine feel of the tropical Pacific. If you have only a few days to spend here, don't run your schedule too tightly alongside that of Air Marshall Islands (AMI) - it generally serves outer atolls just once weekly, and delays of up to many days are common. You can still get a feel for the classic Robinson Crusoe lifestyle by visiting one of the small islands in Majuro Atoll, though divers often bypass Majuro and head straight to Bikini for WWII wreck-diving or Rongelap for nature-diving. Enjoy Your Marshall Islands Tours Video!

Implementation of Jordan's Principle: Addressing Disparities in Services for First Nations Children

01:16:00
Synopsis Jordan's Principle is a child-first principle intended to ensure that status First Nations children living on-reserve do not experience delay or disruption of services as a result of jurisdictional disputes between governments or government departments over payment for services. It is named in honour of Jordan River Anderson, a child from Norway House First Nation, who died in hospital after Federal and Provincial governments spent over two years arguing over payment for his at-home care. Jordan's Principle was unanimously passed in the House of Commons in 2007, but the Canadian Paediatric Society reports that neither the Federal government nor any of the Provinces/Territories have fully implemented Jordan's Principle. Moreover, while service providers and First Nations advocates provide anecdotal evidence to suggest there may be many situations in which First Nations children living on-reserve experience delay, disruption, or denial of services normally available to other children, the Federal government indicated in both 2011 and 2012 that it knew of no Jordan's Principles cases. To date, there has been no systematic documentation of the number or nature of cases in which First Nations children living on-reserve experience delay, disruption, or denial of services normally available to other children. Nor has there been any systematic documentation of the structural differences, in processes for accessing or providing services, which might contribute to disparities in services for First Nations children living on-reserve and for other children. In this webinar, we will provide an overview and update on the implementation of Jordan's Principle in Canada. We will discuss the narrow operational definition of Jordan's Principle adopted by the Federal government, review the Canadian Pediatric Society's report card on Jordan's Principle implementation, and assess the implications of a recent court ruling (the Pictou Landing Band Council & Maurina Beadle v. Canada) for the implementation of Jordan's Principle. In addition, we will introduce a research study being conducted by researchers at McGill University, working in partnership with the Canadian Association of Paediatric Health Centres, the Assembly of First Nations, UNICEF Canada, and the Canadian Paediatric Society. The goal of the study is to systematically document differences in processes for accessing or providing health and social services for First Nations children living on-reserve and for other children. Webinar participants will be invited to give feedback on the study design, to consider participating in the study, and to attend a follow-up webinar presenting preliminary research findings. Presenter Bios Vandna Sinha is an assistant professor in the School of Social Work at McGill University. Her research explores the ways that minority and marginalized communities support and care for their members in light of resource limitations, restrictions imposed by social policies and other factors which limit members' quality of life and access to opportunity. She conducts community-engaged research which supports efforts to develop and improve community based health and social services for children and families. Dr. Sinha is principal investigator for the First Nations component of the Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect (CIS-2008), working closely with a First Nations advisory committee to oversee the most comprehensive national level study of First Nations child welfare investigations ever completed in Canada. She also collaborates with representatives of diverse minority communities on a number of projects supporting the development, implementation, and evaluation of services for families and children. Lucyna Lach is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work, McGill University and an Associate Member of the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology/Neurosurgery in the Faculty of Medicine, McGill University. She has a special interest in health-related quality of life and parenting of children with chronic health conditions and disabilities. Dr. Lach is principal investigator for the Quebec subsample of the pan-Canadian study on Outcome Trajectories in Children with Epilepsy, a study examining determinants of health related quality of life in this population. She is also co-principal investigator of the CIHR Team in PARENTING MATTERS! The Biopsychosocial Context Of Parenting Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders In Canada. Working closely with parents, clinical and institutional leaders, and policy makers, Dr. Lach hopes to increase awareness of what constitutes parenting, what makes a difference to how parents parent their child, and what difference parenting makes to child outcomes.
