Gladesville Bridge - 'Expressway over water' (1967) - Part 1

The Gladesville Bridge spanning the Parramatta River, also known as “The Expressway over Water”, forms part of the then new northern expressway. The new bridge was built a quarter of a mile down river from the existing 80-year-old steel bridge, that was regarded as “an engineer’s pride”, but could no longer accommodate the traffic of the 1960s. This highlighted a need for an upgrade to the bridge to accommodate the ever increasing volume of traffic on the roads in and around Sydney. Here is Part 1 of the series of footage showing the construction of the bridge.

Melbourne Water propose to increase Patterson Lakes rates

Melbourne Water are proposing to increase the Patterson Lakes precept rate by 400% over the next 10 years. The precept rate is a special service charge for works and services payed by residents in the Tidal Waterways and Quite Lakes regions. It appears Melbourne Water have underinvested in the area and are now passing on the costs for asset renewal to the residents. About 600 individual complaints have been submitted rejecting the proposal. Melbourne Water are currently working with the local member Donna Bauer, residents and the Minister of Water to achieve community agreement.

World News - Body found in search for missing Sydney man Patrick Hahn A body has been found in the search for a missing 25-year-old man in Sydney on Christmas Day.Police discovered a man's body in the water at Hunter's Hill, in the lower north shore, on Monday around 2.45pm.While the body has not been formally identified, police believe the body to be of Patrick Hahn, who went missing on Thursday night.Mr Hahn was last seen celebrating Christmas with friends on December 21 at the Marlborough Hotel in Newtown.Mr Hahn, from Drummoyne, was seen getting into a taxi outside the bar, on King Street, at 1.18am on Friday morning.He was then caught on 7/11 service station CCTV footage walking along Victoria Road towards the Gladesville Bridge.Family and friends of the young man have flooded social media with tributes on Christmas Day.Mr Hahn's brother, Rob, posted a touching message on Facebook, thanking everyone for their support.'Over the past few days the love and support from everyone has been tremendous,' he said.'We know PJ was loved by many and plan to share further details in the coming days. We will love you forever and always PJ.'A report will now be prepared for the Coroner as police reported the death as not suspicious. Toxic Waste to be Dumped in Sydney

The former Labor government wanted to send 5,000 tonnes of waste from the old Hunters Hill uranium smelter to Kemps Creek. In October 2010 the then opposition leader Barry O'Farrell argued it, saying: "To dump it in Western Sydney is stupid, it's a threat, and it's not the way any government would behave." However when O'Farrell got into in government, the idea didn't seem so ludicrous and the move was back on. When Seven News revealed the backflip, the government changed its mind again. In October 2011, Finance Minister Greg Pearce said: "We are not going to permit a thimbleful of hazardous material to go to Kemps Creek." However Seven News can reveal that although there won't be hazardous material being dumped, radioactive dirt will find its way to Kemp Creek. In a letter from the Finance Department, it was revealed that the material is soil with traces of "low level radioactive contamination". Kemps Creek is "the only facility licensed to accept this class of waste." Shadow Minister for the Environment Luke Foley has his own idea of what to do with the waste: "If the government tells us that this radioactive waste is not hazardous, let's put it into Greg Pearce's back yard." The Hunters Hill site needs to be cleared so the state government can sell it.
