Mice in medical research

00:54
This video shows the standard caging used for mice in animal houses. It is important to note that mice are much smaller than the other mammals used in research, so although their cages appear small, there is plenty of room for their needs. They are social animals, benefiting from being housed together in small groups and their natural behaviour involves grouping together in small spaces. Other natural behaviours including nesting and tunneling, and is why they are provided with fairly deep bedding. Mice and other small rodents also like to hide inside dark spaces, which is the reason for the plastic casing in the cages. It is termed the red mouse house and is beneficial as the mouse cannot see out of the box and so feels secure, but the researcher can see in. This video has no sound. test on animals

02:48
Animal testing, also known as animal experiments is the act of using non-human animals in research, development projects or scientific experiments. Statistics reveal that, each year millions of animals such as dogs, cats, rats, mice, ferrets, hamsters and monkeys experience physical and mental torture due to scientific practices. Although some believe that these experiments are necessary on grounds of advancement of medicine, most people believe that these experiments are cruel, unethical barbaric and outdated. One of the biggest disadvantages identified in animal testing is the harming, confinement and infliction of pain. During the experiments, the animals used are forced to inhale or swallow vast amounts of test substances, which are often toxic and poisonous. Additionally, animals are used in the experiments and not human beings. This means that any results derived from the tests might or might not be useful to the humans. If the results obtained are termed useless, then for no reason, the animal would have suffered. Animal testing is extremely risky therefore, should not be allowed since it involves extrapolating data located in animals by using it for humans. This is because animals have different genes, proteins and metabolic pathways from that of humans. Although it is true that, these experiments help improve science, they also hinder medical developments. For example, in previous years, patient studies revealed a connection between cancer and tobacco use. Many scientists held this to be true since exceptionally strong evidence supported this relationship. However, during animal testing, tobacco repeatedly failed in producing cancer in the test subjects. Since the tests failed, warnings regarding the dangers of cigarette were dismissed for many years. Animal rights advocates argue that, the act of testing on animals is unnecessary and cruel. Most of these advocates believe that animal testing is just like sexism or racism. According to these advocates, all living creatures deserve respect and should not suffer for any reason considered to be morally wrong. In addition, animal activist oppose animal experiments citing that human beings lack the right of using animals since they lack the consent of the animals. In conclusion, animal testing should not be allowed as it causes suffering to the subjects. Its benefit to humans have not been proven and most benefits derived from the experiments could be produced by other means.

Douglas Melton: Is Biomedical Research Really Close to Curing Anything?

43:02
What's Up, Doc? Is Biomedical Research Really Close to Curing Anything? Douglas Melton, Thomas Dudley Cabot Professor of the Natural Sciences at Harvard University A century ago, people would suffer and die from what we now consider routine bacterial infections. With the discovery of penicillin, a miracle occurred where it became possible to cure people who previously had been left for dead. We're now at the edge of a similar revolution due to remarkable innovations in the field of regenerative biology. In this lecture, Dr. Douglas Melton introduces the astounding advances being made today to unlock the powerful potential hidden within our own cells. Cloning, regeneration, "man-made" stem cells, an end to aging as we know it; these may all sound like science fiction, but they're closer than you think. Easy Kombucha Making, Start to Finish [Tips/Detailed] BTW: Food grade stainless steel is acceptable to use for Kombucha making. I wanted to stop playing for $3 bottles of Kombucha. After some research I figured out how to make some excellent homemade Kombucha on the cheap. It was really easy and fast. Please like if you enjoyed this video. You don't have to be exact with the ingredients. The process is dependent on room temperature and to taste. After a couple times batches you will know what you like and adjust to taste. Below are the measurements that I have used as a base. I may alter the batch time to time to fit my taste. 1 SCOBY (reuseable) At least 2-3 Cups of liquid from previous batch or Real Cider Vinegar such as BRAGG Approx 1 Liter of Hot water for tea 9-10 plain black tea bags Approx 1 Liter of Hot water for simple sugar 2 Cups of Sugar Approx 2 Liters of room temperature water Fruits for flavor SCOBY on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009ZW8RP4/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B009ZW8RP4&linkCode=as2&tag=wwwhungryferr-20&linkId=TLUPGUSEXMCKBV2O Big jar on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000DDVN7/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0000DDVN7&linkCode=as2&tag=wwwhungryferr-20&linkId=Y2SAT2W6UURI3Z3J Another big jar on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006ZRBGSC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B006ZRBGSC&linkCode=as2&tag=wwwhungryferr-20&linkId=QXJKIWG3V2BGIX3J SCOBY (Symbiotic Colony Of Bacteria and Yeast), AKA "mother," The SCOBY is what is what causes the Fermentation within the drink. Kanseri önleyen süt

04:52
Her türlü cilt problemini, açık yaraları giderir. Eat Few Pumpkin Seeds Before Bed And This Will Happen

03:25
Let’s be honest – most of us crave a snack every once in a while. Instead of reaching for a candy bar in between meals, try keeping a healthy snack handy. Not only do pumpkin seeds make a crunchy and satisfying treat, they also provide some amazing health benefits for the body! 1.Restful Sleep Pumpkin seeds are a rich source of tryptophan, an amino acid (protein building block) that your body converts into serotonin, which in turn is converted into melatonin, the "sleep hormone." Eating pumpkin seeds a few hours before bed, along with a carbohydrate like a small piece of fruit, may be especially beneficial for providing your body the tryptophan needed for your melatonin and serotonin production to help promote a restful night's sleep. 2.Plant-Based Omega-3 Fats Pumpkin seeds, along with other nuts and seeds, are a healthy source of plant-based omega-3’s. Getting an adequate amount of Omega-3’s in your diet can help reduce your risk of heart disease and give your immune system a healthy boost. 3.Anti-Diabetic Effects Pumpkin seeds may be especially beneficial in individuals who are diabetic or pre-diabetic. Studies have shown that pumpkin seeds can help improve insulin regulation in the body to prevent diabetic complication by decreasing oxidative stress. 4.Anti-inflammatory Benefits Research has shown that pumpkin seed oil provides anti-inflammatory benefits for the body. One study found that pumpkin seed oil performed just as well as the anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin in treating arthritis, without the dangerous side effects. 5.Zinc for Immune Support Pumpkin seeds are a rich source of zinc (one ounce contains more than 2-mg of this beneficial mineral). Zinc is important to your body in many ways, including immunity, cell growth and division, sleep, mood, your senses of taste and smell, eye and skin health, insulin regulation, and male sexual function. Zinc deficiency is associated with increased illness, chronic fatigue, depression and acne, among other health issues. 6.Magnesium for Heart Health Half a cup of pumpkin seeds contains nearly the full recommended daily amount of magnesium. Magnesium is needed for a wide range of functions in the body, including proper bone and tooth formation, DNA and RNA synthesis and the pumping of the heart. Proper magnesium intake benefits blood pressure to help prevent sudden cardiac arrest, heart attack and stroke. 7.Heart and Liver Health Pumpkin seeds are rich in healthy fats, dietary fiber and antioxidants, all of which can provide major benefits for heart and liver health. A healthy intake of Omega-3 fatty acids can help protect against both liver disease and heart failure. Antioxidants also play a role in keeping the heart and liver healthy and strong. 8.Prostate Health Pumpkin seeds have long been valued as an important natural food for men's health. This is in part because of their high zinc content, which is important for prostate health (where it is found in the highest concentrations in the body), and also because pumpkin seed extracts and oils may play a role in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, or enlarged prostate). Research suggests that both pumpkin seed oil and pumpkin seeds may be particularly beneficial in supporting prostate health.

It is the world's fifth-largest pharmaceutical company measured by 2009 prescription drug sales (after Pfizer, Novartis, Sanofi, and GlaxoSmithKline) and has operations in over 100 countries. It has a portfolio of products for major disease areas including cancer, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, infection, neuroscience, respiratory and inflammation. In February 2012 AstraZeneca and Amgen announced collaboration on treatments for inflammatory diseases. Then in April 2012, AstraZeneca acquired Ardea Biosciences, another biotechnology company, for $1.26 billion. In February 2012, Swedish newspapers announced that Anglo-Swedish pharmaceuticals giant AstraZeneca is closing its research facilities in Södertälje, south of Stockholm, as part of a major restructuring, resulting in the loss of around 1,000 Swedish jobs. Over the past two years, the big pharmaceutical giant divested much of its operations in Sweden and this has also affected their laboratory facilities and experimental animal activities. In June 2012 AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb announced a two-stage deal for the joint acquisition of the biotechnology company Amylin Pharmaceuticals. It was agreed that Bristol-Myers Squibb would acquire Amylin for $5.3 billion in cash and the assumption of $1.7 billion in debt, with AstraZeneca then paying $3.4 billion in cash to Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Amylin being folded into an existing diabetes joint-venture between AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Experiments conducted on animals: Like every pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca conducts experiments on animals. According to AstraZeneca's own website, in 2011 AstraZeneca has used approximately 398,000 animals, including those used by external contract research organisations on their behalf. Approximately 76% (302,480) were rodents, 22% (87,560) were fish and the remaining 2% (7,960) included chickens, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, primates, pigs, goats and sheep 2012-12-27 11:11 Animal Rights Alliance wants to save the experimental dogs that are threatened of killing. Over the past two years, the big pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca divested much of its operations in Sweden. This has also affected their laboratory facilities and experimental animal activities. This means that the use of experimental dogs should have ended at AstraZeneca in Sweden. The animals that were left when the decision to close down the business was taken, should now be either killed or returned to AstraZeneca's kennel outside Örkelljunga. The kennel has a permit to annually raise around 500 dogs for the purpose of animal testing. According to AstraZeneca, this kennel settled, but according to recent documentation from the Animal Rights Alliance, the kennel is still active. Behind the grids are living a large number of beagles whose future is uncertain. - We wonder what will happen to bthe Bealges in AstraZeneca's kennel. Lots of animal lovers with great knowledge about the dogs have been in touch to offer them loving homes, but AstraZeneca consistently refuses to give the dogs a chance for a new life, says Andrea Gunnarson, spokesperson for Animal Rights Alliance Campaign Let Astra dogs Live. - We want to provide loving homes as an alternative to AstraZeneca's planned mass killing, says Andrea Gunnarson, spokesperson for Djurrättsallisansens campaign Let Astra dogs Live.

BrisScience (November 2016): 80 years of science - creating healthier and happier animals

01:14:58
Charles Darwin said ‘The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man.” How far would you go to care for your fur baby? It’s a brave new world for pet care and veterinary medicine, with pets being prescribed antidepressants and veterinary doctors 3D printing new jaw bones for dogs. This month four of Australia’s veterinary experts discuss how the veterinary sciences have changed in the past eighty years, and what the future could look like. Dr Erika Meler is Senior Lecturer and Veterinary Specialist in Internal Medicine at UQ VETS Small Animal Hospital. Erika focuses on minimally-invasive techniques and is particularly interested in applying laser technologies used in human medicine to the care of dogs and cats. Dr Deanne Whitworth is a vet, researcher and lecturer who is particularly interested in the field of Stem Cells. She uses induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to address several key areas of research including regenerative medicine, reproduction, species conservation and mammalian evolution. Associate Professor Bob Doneley graduated from UQ in 1982, and has since worked in veterinary practices across Queensland and the UK, and run his own practice for 22 years. He is now an Associate Professor and Head of the Avian and Exotic Pet Service at UQ, a specialist bird practice. He lectures Vet Science students on bird and exotic animal medicine and is involved in wildlife rehabilitation for many injured animals that find their way to the clinic. Dr Jayne McGhie is a Senior Lecturer in Small Animal Surgery in UQ’s School of Veterinary Science, working in the referral surgical service at UQ Veterinary Medical Centre in Gatton. Jayne worked in mixed practice in Qld and NSW and as a clinical instructor at University of California in Davis before undertaking her surgical residency at Murdoch University in Perth. She is a boarded small animal surgeon. Jayne has an interest in new technologies, such as 3D printing, minimally invasive surgery and canine genomics.

Researchers characterize antibodies that block H5N1 influenza viral transmission

05:22
H5N1 avian influenza is a highly pathogenic virus that has been responsible for several outbreaks of bird flu in humans over the past decade. In previous outbreaks, the virus spread through direct contact between humans and infected birds, but was not able to spread from human to human. Recent studies in ferrets have demonstrated that mutations in the viral HA gene allow the virus to be transmitted via respiratory droplets indicate that such mutations may also make the virus transmissible between humans. In this episode, James Crowe of Vanderbilt University describes his group's recent investigation of the ability to human H5N1 vaccines to neutralize respiratory droplet transmissible forms of the virus. Using peripheral blood mononuclear cells from vaccinated humans, Crowe and colleagues identified antibodies that recognized both wild type and respiratory droplet transmissible forms of viral HA. Structural studies were used to further characterize the motifs required for antibody recognition. These findings indicate that the polyclonal sera currently used for vaccination can neutralize respiratory droplet transmissible forms of the virus. This year marks the 40th anniversary of cisplatin’s approval by the FDA as an anti-cancer drug. Cisplatin (and the close analog, carboplatin) is known to be the “penicillin of cancer drugs,” because it has been one of the first, most widely prescribed, and most effective treatment for many cancer diagnoses. Cisplatin was approved by the FDA in 1978, revolutionizing the treatment of certain cancers, especially testicular, bladder, lung and stomach cancers, and saving countless lives.

The Rabbit in Australia (1979)

22:44
The story of the European rabbit in Australia must surely be one of the most amazing examples of an animal's ability to colonise a new land. Just how and why this happened makes a fascinating study. This film traces the history of the rabbit from its evolutionary home in the Mediterranean through to its introduction into Australia as a source of food and sport and as a reminder of the English countryside. The rabbit population explosion began about 1860, and within 30 years, rabbit numbers had reached plague proportions over large parts of southern Australia. The long battle to control the rabbit had begun. With the introduction of Myxomatosis in 1950 came the start of a big research effort aimed at a complete understanding of rabbit behaviour and ecology. Not many animals have ever been studied in such detail, so that we now have a much better understanding of how rabbits feed, breed and survive in different parts of Australia. The film shows some aspects of social behaviour, reproduction and predation. It shows that, while rabbits were ideally suited to Australia's temperate areas, they have also adapted to living in arid country and even in alpine regions. News U.S.A;If the new strain of swine flu was released, it could kill up to a billion people

01:10
What was extraordinary about the great flu pandemic of 2018 was not only that it came exactly 100 years after the Spanish flu of 1918, but that it also killed 5 per cent of the world's population. In 1918, that proportion meant some 100  million people. In 2018, nearly 400 million fell victim. Of those, some one million were in Britain. Nearly every family lost a loved one, with children and the elderly being particularly vulnerable. The NHS was unable to cope with the sheer numbers infected, which ran to around ten million — almost a sixth of the population. With no vaccine available, all that doctors could do was to send people home and tell them to hope for the best. It was the worst natural disaster the world had ever seen. But the virus was no random creation of Mother Nature — it was man-made, produced by an obscure professor at a university deep in the heart of the U.S. This may sound like a science-fiction scenario that would strain credulity but, terrifyingly, it is all too possible. Professor Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the University of Wisconsin-Madison has created a deadly new strain of the 2009 swine flu virus — for which there is no known vaccine. If the virus escaped from Professor Kawaoka's laboratory it could kill hundreds of millions — perhaps even a billion. Worryingly, scientists seem as alarmed as the general public. Professor Kawaoka revealed what he had done at a secret meeting held earlier this year, and his fellow virologists appear to have reacted with despair. 'He's basically got a known pandemic strain that is now resistant to vaccination,' said one scientist who did not wish to be named. 'Everything he did before was dangerous, but this is even madder.' So what exactly has Professor Kawaoka done before? Only last month Kawaoka revealed in a scientific paper that he had also synthesised a bird flu virus — called '1918-like Avian'. He had created, through a process called 'reverse genetics', a flu virus extremely similar to that which caused the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. Kawaoka and his team declared that they had made the virus to assess whether variants of the 1918 flu were as deadly to humans as the original virus. After testing it on ferrets, the team found that what they had created, in the dry words of academia, 'may have pandemic potential'. An earlier experiment looked at making another lethal bird flu strain easier to catch. The idea that scientists blithely create deadly flu viruses, essentially to see how deadly they are, caused outrage in the scientific community and the world at large. 'The work they are doing is absolutely crazy,' said Professor Lord May of Oxford, a former president of the Royal Society. 'The whole thing is exceedingly dangerous.' Marc Lipsitch, Professor of Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, said: 'I am worried that this signals a growing trend to make "transmissible" novel viruses willy-nilly. This is a risky activity, even in the safest labs. 'Scientists should not take such risks without strong evidence that the work could save lives, which this paper does not provide.' Other scientists used stronger language. 'If society understood what was going on,' thundered Professor Simon Wain-Hobson, of the Virology Department at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, 'they would say "What the F are you doing?" ' It's a good question. Professor Kawaoka did try to justify his research last month. He explained that wild birds continue to harbour many variants of the influenza A virus — the strain of virus that can be transmitted from birds, including domestic poultry, through to humans. One of the subtypes of influenza A is called H5N1 — a name familiar to many. Not only was a form of H5N1 behind the 1918 outbreak, but its variants have started to emerge over the past ten years, and are now collectively known as 'bird flu'. Compared to the outbreak in 1918, H5N1 has so far been relatively merciful. To date, only some 400 people worldwide have died from the virus.
