World Diabetes Day at the Diabetes Association   Novr 14 2012

The Diabetes Association Inc., a program of People, Incorporated celebrated World Diabetes Day at their program headquarters, 170 Pleasant Street, on November 14, 2012. Mayor William Flanagan proclaimed the Day in Fall River to an assembled group from a number of PI's programs. Citing his own family experience with diabetes, the Mayor praised the Association for providing education and direct services to hundreds of people within the City who either have diabetes or who are at risk of developing it. Representatives of a number of agencies and vendors were on hand to provide information about their services, and Program Director John Quintas demonstrated how to make a healthy fruit smoothie for the assembled guests. The 2010 Fall River Fitness Challenge continues with the fifth Challenge event, a two-mile walk/run along the Taunton River boardwalk to the Iwo Jima monument and back. Participants are a little more than half-way through a four-month, city-wide program involving over 800 people in an effort to lose weight and get fit. This is the third time that Community Development Recreation, the Fall River YMCA, the Diabetes Association, Children In Balance and Healthy City Fall River has sponsored the free event. Annual Diabetes Fair at People Incorporated   June 4 2016

The Diabetes Association (DAI) of People Incorporated Saint Annes Hospital worked together to put on a Diabetes Resource Fair at the People Incorporated Main Street headquarters next to Government Center on June 4, 2016. They invited educators and vendors to the free four-hour event that was open to the public and designed to raise awareness about the effects of type 2 diabetes in the Greater Fall River community. "We have a great program here," noted John Quintas of the DAI. "Lots of give-aways, food, lots of services that are being made known to the community, so we welcome people to come in and check out what it's all about," he continued. Agency representatives included Saint Anne's Hospital's Rose Couto and Laurie Hammontree, YMCA Southcoast Diabetes Prevention Project Manager Lu Brito, and People Incorporated's Robin Jones. Informational tables were offered by the SMILES Program, AstraZenica, the UMass Extension SNAP-ED Program, Center for Sight, Head Start and Tufts Health Plan. The DAI and Saint Anne's team up to offer a Eat Healthy Be Active series, a Diabetes Prevention Program along with DAI's monthly Information and Support group.

The Fall River Fitness Challenge held its second Challenge event at RE-CREATION headquarters on January 12, 2013. Amy Jones Delgiacco from Fitness Fusion got close to 100 people through an hour of "boot camp" style exercises, including jumping jacks, sprints with weights, relays and outdoor running on the 45-degree day. "I was amazed that Amy and her crew were able to keep so many people moving in the small space without anyone running into one another," commented Healthy City Fall River coordinator Dave Weed. The Fall River Fitness Challenge got off to a great start with the first Challenge event at RE-CREATION headquarters on Bank Street. Staff from All Generations Fitness in Somerset led a group of over seventy people in an evening session on January 9, 2013. Starting with a "pop the balloon" warm-up, the group moved through a series of activities to music that got the heart pumping and the muscles stretching, all with a lot of smiles. The fourth Challenge Event of the 2012 Fall River (MA) Fitness Challenge was held at the Veterans' Memorial Auditorium on February 4th. Designed as an opportunity for Challenge participants to continue getting into shape, the event began with a challenge to complete thirty laps of the gym. Participants divided into five groups, each doing three minutes of a different exercise interspersed by three minutes of walking around the gym "I can't believe how quickly the event sent," stated Dawn Nardi who is participating in the Challenge for the first time. Using information that has supported its approach to reducing obesity, Partners Executive Director Dr. David Weed presented on "A Low-carbohydrate, Whole Foods Approach to Diabetes Treatment" to participants at the Fall River YMCA on October 22, 2016. Dr. Weed outlined why blood sugar control in pre-diabetes and diabetes can be best achieved by reducing dietary carbohydrates and increasing fat. "The American Diabetes Association has been recommending low-carb diets since 2008, though you would never know it by what you read in the popular literature," noted Weed who has been teaching this way of eating for the past five years. At the end of his presentation, Dr. Weed gave a variety of web sites, including DietDoctor.com that provide excellent advice, and his own site where people can ask questions.

The 16th Challenge event, the halfway mark for the four-month series, was led by Ray Gendreau of FitWorks at Re-Creation on March 8, 2014. Over 75 Challenge participants followed Gendreau's instructions as he took them through a cardio workout that kept them moving for nearly an hour. The Diabetes Association (DAI) of People Incorporatated, Saint Annes Hospital and the YMCA Southcoast celebrated World Diabetes Day at a collaborative resource fair held on November 13, 2014. Using space at the People Incorporated Main Street headquarters, the three groups invited educators and vendors to the five-hour event that was open to the public and designed to raise awareness about the effects of type I and type 2 diabetes in the Greater Fall River community. "We have a great program here," noted John Quintas of the DAI. "Lots of give-aways, food, lots of services that are being made known to the community, so we welcome people to come in and check out what it's all about," he continued. Educational speakers included Saint Anne's Hospital Dietitioan Laurie Hammontree, YMCA Southcoast Diabetes Prevention Project Manager Lu Brito, and Foot Care Specialist Jennifer Fichter.
