The Birth Control Shot (Depo-Provera) - How It Works, Benefits, Side Effects

01:55
Learn all about the shot, or Depo-Provera, and why you might want to consider this birth control option. Get more information at http://ppmns.org or by calling 1.800.230.PLAN. Transcript: The shot is an injection that you get in the arm. It's also called "Depo" or "Depo-Provera." It's a birth control method that lasts for three months. The shot works by preventing the ovary from releasing an egg. If the egg isn't released, it's impossible for the sperm and the egg to join together. The shot also helps by thickening the mucus in the cervix, so that the sperm can't get through. The shot is a good choice for patients who want something that's long-lasting, something that's highly effective and safe. It's really convenient for some patients because you come into the office, you get the injection, and you're set for three whole months—you don't have to think about it, you don't have to carry anything around, you don't have to take a pill every day. It's also very private for patients for that very reason—nobody knows that you have it. Many women get the shot and don't have any side effects or problems at all. One of the most common side effects of the shot is irregular bleeding. It's not unusual for women to spot irregularly for the first 6 to 12 months when they're on the shot. After approximately a year, about 50 percent of the women that get the shot actually stop having their periods altogether (which actually a lot of women like). Because the shot is long-lasting, it can take a while to get pregnant after having your last shot, so that's definitely something you'll want to consider. If you're worried about being able to afford the shot, you should see if you're eligible for a program at Planned Parenthood which will give you low- to no-cost birth control and other reproductive health care. To see if you're eligible, visit ppmns.org.

Medications that can Cause Depression (2018 Update)

11:09
Needed medications can be life-savers, and should never be discouraged. But, very often, a medication with significant side effects can be substituted with a medication which gives the same therapeutic effect, without the unwanted side effects. A single pill can have hundreds of listed "possible" side effects, these can be very hard to keep up with. But, when you take 2 or 3 pills daily, the possible side effects don't just double or triple, they multiply. One medication may not cause depression alone, but when combined with another pill, it might lead to significant depression. This video goes through the most common medications which can risk depression, or worsen existing depression. This video is not medical advice, do not stop or change any medication you are presently taking without consulting first with your doctor. Signs You Are Pregnant While on Birth Control

02:42
What are the signs you are pregnant while on birth control? You hit that row of do nothing pills in the birth control pack and your period does not come. It could come late for other reasons like hormones out of whack. And it was concern that my hormones would be messed up that I did not use them. Then I cannot say that you got pregnant on the pill because you used antibiotics. Antibiotics can make you poop a lot, passing the pills through faster. If you were taking thyroid medication, it would metabolize them faster. However, if you get a stomach bug and throw them up, you could get pregnant. If I’m throwing up a lot, that’s a sign I am pregnant on birth control. If you are nauseous or throwing up in the morning but not in the afternoon or evening, then it is likely due to pregnancy. If it is all day, then you may need antibiotics or another medication. I have not been taking antibiotics. If you were on the pill, you’d be able to guess you were pregnant if you had a light period the next cycle and none the one after that. With a birth control implant, though, a woman would not have a period at all. Well, most of the time. You could develop breast tenderness in early pregnancy. I get that with my normal cycle. Peeing a lot is a sign of pregnancy. Or a urinary tract infection. If you used an injected contraceptive, your odds of pregnancy are really low barring medication that interferes with it. I do not use the injectables. What are the other signs I could be pregnant while on birth control? If you used an intrauterine, it causes heavier than normal periods. If you’re pregnant, the period stops. That’s usually normal regardless of the contraception method. You could be certain you did a pregnancy test and it came back positive. Don’t birth control methods interfere with that? If you used a condom, cervical cap or even an intrauterine, you’d have the normal hormonal cycles for ovulation and pregnancy. It is only the hormone based pills and shots that throw off your hormones. And it may be that my contraceptive method failed. If you were taking birth control pills, the estrogen or progesterone won’t throw off the pregnancy test. In fact, no medicine you take for anything would mess it up. So a pregnancy test is the best way to see if I’m pregnant. And it would be a sure sign to talk to your doctor about the best way to stop your birth control, since you clearly won’t need it for a while.

Buttock Injection - Everything You Need To Know - Dr. Nabil Ebraheim

01:29
Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the proper technique for injection into the gluteal region (buttocks). Injection into the gluteal region (buttocks) is not uncommon. Selecting a safe injection site is important in order to avoid injury to the neurovascular structures, especially the sciatic nerve. The buttocks is divided into quadrants. Divide the buttock halfway down the middle and halfway across. The injection is given in the center of the upper, outer quadrant. Injections into the other quadrants may cause injury to the neurovascular structures. A line can be drawn from the posterior superior edge of the iliac spine to the greater trochanter. This area above the line is considered to be the safe zone for intramuscular injection. Depo Provera - Professional Gynecological Services - Brooklyn, NY

03:49
What is Depo-Provera? Depo-Provera, also known as the birth control shot, is an injectable form of hormonal contraception. It is a long-acting progestin-only hormone method of birth control. The birth control shot contains Medroxyprogesterone acetate, which is similar to the natural Progesterone produced by a woman's ovaries during the second half of their menstrual cycle. Depo Provera when received on a regular basis, every 12 weeks, is highly effective at preventing pregnancy. How does it work? Depo-Provera works in a few different ways to prevent pregnancy. It inhibits the secretion of hormones that stimulate the ovaries, which prevents ovulation, it also thickens the cervical mucus to prevent the entrance of sperm. This injection also thins the uterine lining to prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. How effective is it? Depo-Provera is actually one of the most effective methods of hormonal birth control available. When the injections are received every 12 weeks on a routine basis, it is over 99% effective. The birth control shot does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Women are urged to use condoms consistently to decrease their risk of STD's. How often do you need to repeat the injection? After your initial injection of Depo-Provera, you will be given a date 12 weeks later to return to the office for another injection. It will be repeated every 12 weeks until no longer desired by the patient. If necessary you may receive the shot up to 14 days early or up 7 days late. However, if you have not received your injection within 13 weeks after your last injection, you must immediately begin an alternative method of birth control. Pregnancy testing will be required before you can receive another injection. What are the benefits of Depo-Provera? The birth control shot provides safe, long acting, highly effective contraception without requiring a woman to think about her birth control method on a daily basis or at the time of intercourse. It does not contain any estrogen, another type of hormone, which means the shot can be a good choice for women who are breastfeeding or cannot take estrogen. The birth control shot often decreases bleeding and cramping with periods. It may also decrease your risk of endometrial & ovarian cancer and has shown no interactions with antibiotics & most other medications. Depo-Provera is fully reversible! What are the side effects & risks? The side effects are usually not serious, but it is important to realize that once Depo-Provera is injected, it cannot be reversed or neutralized. You will have to live with any side effects until the medicine wears off in 3 months. The most common side affects associated with the birth control shot: Irregular bleeding, weight gain, headache, dizziness, depression, nausea, bloating, fatigue and abdominal discomfort. It's important to remember that the birth control shot does not decrease a woman's fertility and on average fertility returns in about 10-12 months from your last injection. It is recommended that injections be discontinued one year before a pregnancy is desired. If pregnancy occurs within 1-2 months after a Depo-Provera injection, the newborn may be at an increased risk of low birth weight and in turn, an increased risk of death. Use of Depo-Provera has been associated with a decrease in the amount of calcium in your bones with can increase your risk of Osteoporosis. Talk to your doctor today to determine if Depo-Provera is right for you. To schedule an appointment or if you have any questions please call Professional Gynecological Services anytime. 718.875.4848 http://www.thewomenschoice.com/depo-provera/

Periods can also stop secondary to the contraception usage like Mirena, hormonal injections or implants. The contraceptive injection for example has been reported to affect as many as 7 out of 10 women, who all reported their periods stopping for up to a year after they’d had the injection. Once you stop the method of contraception, your periods should return to normal, although occasionally problems can persist afterwards.Sometimes a missing period does indicate that something else is wrong…Periods can stop because of hormone imbalance Other symptoms include weight gain, acne and excessive facial hair ..If you are on medication for other conditions, this can also cause a pause in your periods. Antidepressants, anti-sickness medications, as well as some medications for high blood pressure have been found to cause periods to stop. Preparing Ampicillin and Gentamicin for Injection - Newborn Care Series

By Global Health Media Project. Download link: http://globalhealthmedia.org/videos/ Young infants, less than 2 months old, who have any sign of critical illness should be referred to a hospital urgently. Infection progresses rapidly in young babies. Be sure to give the first doses of ampicillin and gentamicin before the family leaves. This video shows how to prepare and draw up ampicillin and gentamicin for injection. The intended audience is frontline health workers in the developing world. Copyright © 2016, Global Health Media Project Script follows: Preparing Ampicillin and Gentamicin for Injection Young infants, less than 2 months old, who have any sign of critical illness should be referred to a hospital urgently. Infection progresses rapidly in young babies. Be sure to give the first doses of ampicillin and gentamicin before the family leaves. This can save the baby’s life. This video will show how to prepare and draw up ampicillin and gentamicin for injection. Doses for babies are based on the baby’s weight. Start by getting an accurate weight. The baby weighs 3.2 kilos. Wash your hands. Then, gather your supplies: gentamicin, ampicillin and sterile water for injection, a sterile syringe and needle for mixing the ampicillin, cotton balls, and 2 smaller sterile needles and syringes to give the injections. Check that the medicines have not expired. Gentamicin is available in several strengths. Be sure to double check the concentration before you draw up the dose. There is no need to dilute any of the products. The 80 milligrams per 2 milliliter concentration is preferred. The smaller volume is less painful for the baby. The dosage chart shows that our 3.2 kilo baby needs 0.4 milliliters of this concentration. A 1-milliliter syringe will help your accuracy with the small dose. Now draw up the medicine. First draw air into the syringe equal to the dose you need. Then, inject the air into the vial. Turn it upside down keeping the tip of the needle in the fluid. If you’ve drawn bubbles into the syringe push the plunger back and forth to return them to the vial. Drawing up your dose is easy because the air you added to the vial counteracts the vacuum. Now tap the syringe to let any remaining bubbles rise to the top and gently push the plunger to clear them. Check that you have the right dose of 0.4 milliliters. Cap the needle with the one-handed method to avoid a finger prick. If you’re using an ampule instead of a vial, wrap the neck in gauze to protect your hand and snap off the top. Put the needle carefully into the opening to draw up the medicine. Now prepare ampicillin: follow the directions on the bottle to prepare the medicine. Draw up 1.8 milliliters of sterile water and add it to the 500 milligram bottle of ampicillin. Shake the bottle to mix the powder and water until it’s completely dissolved. The baby will need 0.6 milliliters of ampicillin. Draw 0.6 milliliters of air into the syringe. Then, inject it into the vial. Turn it upside down. Keeping the needle in the fluid, draw up your dose. Notice the bubbles being returned back to the vial before removing the syringe. Now tap the syringe to clear the remaining bubbles and gently push the plunger to remove the air. There’s your dose of 0.6 milliliters. Remember: An accurate weight will ensure an accurate dose for the sick baby. Use a dosage chart to save time and reduce math errors. Follow the 5 rights of medicine usage: give the right medicine at the right dose by the right route at the right time, to the right baby.

Missed 1 Pill, Could I Be Pregnant?

01:47
What are your chances of getting pregnant if you miss a birth control pill? If I missed 1 pill could I be pregnant? If you miss one birth control pill and take it a day or two later, you're more likely to get pregnant. How much more likely? If the odds of getting pregnant are 1% or 2% for perfect usage, odds are actually 5% because so many women don't always follow the instructions and occasionally miss pills. Does it matter when I miss the pills? The odds of getting pregnant go up if you miss any pills during the first and third weeks of the cycle. I missed one pill yesterday. Do I take it today or skip it? Go ahead and double up the pills the second day. There are jokes about girls looking good through beer goggles. They don't tell you about how you forget essentials like BC pills. If you took the pill and then threw it up, whether you had a stomach bug or got roaring drunk, it's as if you didn't take it at all. The forgotten hazards of a hangover. At least the pills protect me. Birth control pills don't protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Life is a sexually transmitted disease. The birth control pill doesn't protect against HPV, HIV, hepatitis C, gonorrhea - You can't get pregnant or an STD if you don't have sex. Ah, so you do remember something from abstinence education. I don't want to say no, and I don't want to get stuck with a pregnancy or have an abortion. If you can't remember pills, get an IUD or an injectable contraceptive. I'm so stressed I might take St. John's wart. And I hope I don't need antibiotics for, uh ... Both of those meds wipe out the birth control pills' benefits. Maybe you just need a Depo Provera shot, so you're good for three months. Then I have to remember to go back in three months. Then you really shouldn't be on the pill.

Birth Control Shot Side Effects | Birth Control

02:22
Watch more How to Pick a Birth Control Method videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/510814-Birth-Control-Shot-Side-Effects-Birth-Control The birth control shot is a highly effective form of birth control. It is progesterone only and is usually administered by a doctor or a nurse practitioner. The injection is usually given into your arm or in your buttock once every 12 weeks. While this is an excellent and highly effective form of birth control, it does have some side effects. Some of the most common side effects include breakthrough bleeding, headaches, and over a relatively short period of time, you may stop getting your periods altogether. These side effects are completely normal. Now, the headaches and the breakthrough bleeding will usually get better with time. However, if you stop getting your periods with this birth control option, it's possible that your periods may not return until after you stop using this form of contraception. Please don't be worried. While patients are concerned when they don't see their periods, so long as they're using the birth control option correctly, this is perfectly safe. One of the concerns about using the birth control injection, or the birth control shot, is the return to fertility. In other words, if you use this birth control option and you decide that you want to get pregnant, it can take up to a year for your periods to return and for you to start ovulating in order for you to get pregnant. So if you're thinking in the next year or two that you would like to consider pregnancy, you probably should consider a different, more easily reversible form of birth control. Another concern about this form of birth control is the risk associated with bone loss. Now, the risk of bone loss is relatively low over the first year. But if you continue this form of birth control for two or more years, you may want to consider changing your options in order to reduce this risk from occurring. Again, I highly recommend that you talk to your nurse practitioner or your physician about whether this is a good birth control option for you. Despite the side effects, this may be the birth control option for you. And while you're concerned about the side effect profile, it's probably better to use this than to use nothing at all.

Synthetic Hormones (Oxford University Study) vs Natural Hormones

04:03
View other Female Hormone Imbalance videos in this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLeYxl92LAUH_G2hZxEqn4aYTdRIw_W3c7 View other educational “Female Hormone Imbalance”, “Fat Loss & Weight Loss” & “Thyroid Dysfunction & Metabolism” videos on our channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWG9qe_cQyYPG3phmYLMHCQ Dr. Raj Banerjee shares details about the largest study on synthetic hormones usage and its impact on female hormone imbalance. Oxford University Study There was another study done and it was financed by the British government conducted by Oxford University and this study looked at a quarter of the British population of that age group and they found in its study a 66% increase risk of breast cancer and a 22% increase risk in the mortality for women that were taking synthetic hormones. And the researchers in Britain extrapolated about a hundred thousand plus cases of breast cancer in the US occurred over the last 10 years. Strictly due to the use of synthetic hormones. So if you realize a hundred thousand women got breast cancer right, because of the hormones. And if you look back at this chart about the other factors, like strokes, heart attacks or blood clots and how many had an increased risk of Alzheimer's just from taking these synthetic hormones. Took 40 years for this to hit. There should be a level of resentment and outrage. Not an acceptable period of time to determine if a drug is safe in the USA. Forty years is not acceptable. This drug has been around since the early 1960s and they just are telling you about it. The differences in intervention between many European nations and the US speaks volumes about the power of our pharmaceutical companies over government decisions. If you need convincing: it took 28 years for high-dose birth control pills to be withdrawn in the US. Those pills were up to 1000% higher than those used today. Whereas in Britain it took less than three years for high dose pills to disappear entirely from the market after a study confirmed a ten-fold increase in mortality rates for women who took birth control pills continuously over 5 years. Examples summarize typical medical treatments. Dr. Jay Cohen, has written a good book called Overdose. Well written chapter about Premarin and the dosing. He takes a hard look at medical research, the prescribing practices of physicians and how unnecessary side effects are the result of ‘one-size-fits-all’ dosages – In the case of Premarin, the smallest dose available is 8 to 10 times – repeat, 8 to 10 times - what most women need. Would you buy a dress that was 8-10 times larger than you needed? So the basic conclusion now is that these hormone are just too dangerous to take. Dr Raj wants you to know ovarian hormones and female hormones do not spontaneously malfunction by themselves. They are responding to stress as a stress hormone called cortisol. Every molecule of cortisol that you produce comes from progesterone. When you under stress guess what happens? Your cortisol goes up and your progesterone drops. Dr Raj can test your cortisol and fix it. He can test your female hormones and fix your whole hormonal system at the same time and eliminate all your symptoms. This will help eliminate depression and fatigue, night sweats, hot flashes, mood swings and it will improve your metabolism so you will able to start losing weight effectively. $1 birth control injection for women in 69 developing countries could slash unwanted pregnancies

01:00
A US$1 contraceptive injection will be made available to women in 69 of the world’s poorest countries thanks to an agreement between the Gates Foundation, drug company Pfizer, and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation. The contraceptive injection, known as the Sayana Press, comes prepackaged with a syringe. The shots can be administered without extensive training, making Sayana Press an ideal birth control option for rural areas in developing countries. Sayana Press contains a dose of synthetic progesterone known as depot medroxyprogesterone acetate that suppresses ovulation for a period of three months. Burkina Faso is the first country to begin the Sayana Press pilot program launched by an organization known as Path. Niger, Senegal and Uganda are expected to begin using Sayana Press soon. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Endometriosis - Words Can Kill

07:02
People don't realize how badly words can hurt. When you are dealing with an illness so many can't see and you are struggling everyday just to wake up, hearing words like "you're just being lazy" or "you are faking it" literally kills. It makes you feel so small and it makes you feel worthless. I'm lucky to have amazing people in my corner but still hearing those negative comments from people who i thought cared about me, HURTS. If you know someone who may look fine but who is struggling from any type of illness, reach out to them. Talk to them, listen to them and most importantly believe in them! We have to not only spend our days in pain and sick but we also have to spend everyday fighting for people to believe us. We have to explain how we feel and what we are going through to make people believe us. HOW IS THAT FAIR? To be suffering and still have to explain it. We deserve more from doctors and from the people who surround us. We aren't lying or over exaggerating. I never knew the endometriosis community was so big until recently and I would have given anything to have someone to talk to who knew what I was going through and who was feeling the pain I was feeling. So to anyone who is struggling with Endometriosis or any chronic invisible illness, you can reach out to me. I will listen. You aren't alone, I promise! My links are connected to my page!
