Inside Out and Emotional Health

02:33
Related article: Inside Out and Emotional Health http://thecreativemind.net/1885/inside-out-and-emotional-health/ The animated movie "Inside Out" tells the story of a young girl, Riley, who has to leave her Midwest life behind when her family moves to San Francisco. Characters depict her primary emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - and the inner conflicts they cause her, as well as her parents, who have their own inner conflicts to deal with. The movie was named "Best Animated Feature" at the 2016 Oscars. In her review for Counseling Today magazine, Erin Shifflett writes: "A person’s mind is a mysterious labyrinth of thoughts, feelings, memories, ideas and compulsions; the mind of a young girl is likely even more complex. "Disney-Pixar’s latest animated offering, Inside Out, bravely delves into that intricate world in a way that effectively captures the nuances of the way people feel and think—and maybe helps them understand why they act the way they do sometimes. "Developed with the guidance of University of California, Berkeley psychologist Dacher Keltner, the film tells the tale of Riley, an 11-year old whose family relocates from Minnesota to San Francisco. "Through the move, Riley loses her friends and beloved hockey team and is forced to transition to a place where pizza is served with broccoli as a topping and the cool girls in school wear eye shadow, much to Riley’s surprise." Shifflett describes the role of the "five emotions operating at Headquarters (Riley’s brain): Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear and Anger. ... "The importance of Sadness and, indeed, the other less pleasant emotions such as Fear, Disgust and Anger, is highlighted multiple times throughout the film when their roles and functions are explained." From Emotion, personified: What “Inside Out” gets right about mental health By Erin Shifflett June 25, 2015. Inside Out was named "Best Animated Feature" at the 2016 Academy Awards. Producers and director Pete Docter said in his acceptance speech: "This film was really born from watching our kids grow up, which is not easy! "Anyone out there who's in junior high, high school, working it out, suffering - there are days you're going to feel sad. You're going to feel angry. You're going to feel scared. That's nothing you can choose. "But you can make stuff. Make films. Draw. Write. It will make a world of difference." What is Dialectical behavior therapy for adolescents (DBT)?

08:02
Dialectical behavior therapy for adolescents and young adults (DBT) is a clinical program within the Young Adult and Family Center that targets high risk, multi-problem adolescents. We specialize in identifying and treating depression and risky behavior in adolescents, including self-injury, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, substance use, binging and purging, risky sexual behavior, physical fighting, and other forms of risk-taking. DBT has been adapted by Alec Miller and Jill Rathus from Marsha Linehan’s initial conceptualization of DBT, which was developed for adults diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Our adaptation follows the work of Miller and Rathus, who originally modified DBT for use with teens. Our program targets five areas: Confusion about self Impulsivity Emotional instability Interpersonal problems Parent-teen problems The treatment has been shown to be effective in treating self-harming adolescents with depression who demonstrate some traits of borderline personality disorder that are beyond that expected of typical adolescent development. Depression in adolescence is characterized by depressed or irritable mood, changes in appetite and sleep, withdrawal from and loss of interest in usual activities and friends, feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, agitation and/or fatigue, difficulty concentrating, difficulty making decisions, and suicidal ideation. Some traits of borderline personality disorder that may be of concern to teens and parents include: unstable sense of self, unstable interpersonal relationships, inappropriate or uncontrollable anger or other emotions, serious mood swings, recurrent self-harm or and/or suicide attempts, chronic feelings of emptiness, and impulsivity that puts the teen at risk. Teens and young adults referred to the DBT Program typically have many or all of the problems listed above, which can lead to difficulties fulfilling their obligations in school and at home. This perpetuates their negative ideas about themselves.

Case study clinical example CBT: First session with a client with symptoms of depression (CBT model)

13:55
Case study example for use in teaching, aiming to demonstrate some of the triggers, thoughts, feelings and responses linked with problematic low mood. This section here represents the first 14 minutes of an initial therapy session, but in order to try and outline the vicious cycle, it moves faster than an average session might. The video features an actor playing the character of Lucy, but the dialogue is not scripted, and as such represents a natural therapeutic exchange. I myself am a qualified Clinical Psychologist, but would definitely not suggest that this is a perfect example of therapy! This video was produced as a collaboration between the University of Leeds and Leeds Trinity University (Ricardo Barker).

Feeling good | David Burns | TEDxReno

17:57
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Why do we sometimes fall into black holes of depression, anxiety and self-doubt? And can we change the way we feel? Dr. Burns graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College, received his M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine and completed his psychiatry residency at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He has served as Acting Chief of Psychiatry at the Presbyterian / University of Pennsylvania Medical Center (1988) and Visiting Scholar at the Harvard Medical School (1998), and is certified by the National Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Burns is currently Adjunct Clinical Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine, where he is involved in research and teaching. He has received numerous awards, including the A. E. Bennett Award for his research on brain chemistry, the Distinguished Contribution to Psychology through the Media Award, and the Outstanding Contributions Award from the National Association of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists. He has been named Teacher of the Year three times from the class of graduating residents at Stanford University School of Medicine, and feels especially proud of this award. In addition to his academic research, Dr. Burns has written a number of popular books on mood and relationship problems. His best-selling book,Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy, has sold over 4 million copies in the United States, and many more worldwide. Feeling Good is the book most frequently “prescribed” for depressed patients by psychiatrists and psychologists in the United States and Canada. Surveys indicate that American mental health professionals rate Feeling Good as the #1 book on depression, out of a list of 1,000 self-help books. In 1995, Dr. Burns and his family returned to California from Philadelphia. When he is not crunching statistics for his research, he can be found teaching his famous Tuesday evening psychotherapy training group for Stanford students and community clinicians, or giving workshops for mental health professionals throughout the United States and Canada. To learn more about Dr. Burns, you can check out his Wikipedia page or read a recent article about Dr. Burns by Robert Strauss in the Stanford Magazine. Michigan, Suite 810 & 4770 N. Lincoln, Suite 7 Chicago 312.265.2875 Feel Fine Fast. Treating young and middle-aged professionals and college students with adult ADHD, depression and anxiety. ADHD, depression and anxiety don’t have to rule your life. Experienced care for adult ADHD, depression and anxiety. Helping adults take control of their lives. Feel Fine Fast with tailored mental health treatment. Since 2001, I’ve treated thousands of young and middle-aged professionals and college students who suffer from ADHD, depression and anxiety. My patients are all extremely busy. They don’t want to spend countless hours and thousands of dollars on psychotherapy. They’re looking for someone who can quickly diagnose their problem and prescribe a treatment plan that will resolve the issue fast.Adult ADHD. When it’s out of control, so is your life. If you find yourself constantly disorganized, late, forgetful and overwhelmed by your daily activities, you may be suffering from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). More than 16 million American adults have been living with this condition since childhood without realizing it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jt_J20uZfBA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yz5bs5HMpQ8 ADHD affects the prefrontal cortex of the brain, where all of our planning and decision-making functions occur. Left untreated, ADHD can hinder everything we do in our daily lives, from school to career to relationships. Attention deficit symptoms worsen as responsibilities increase. You may be able to compensate for some of your symptoms when you’re in a structured, familiar environment, such as the workplace, where your co-workers understand and support you. The real problems arise when you change jobs and are faced with new tasks, or in areas with less structure, such as going through college, pursuing a career, raising a family or running a household. When you suffer from ADHD, your ability to organize, focus and remain calm goes out the window. Medication can provide dramatic improvement of ADHD symptoms. Most of my patients experience a significant reduction in their ADHD symptoms the same day they begin their medication. But because drugs aren’t a cure, they must be taken on a continual basis, otherwise the symptoms will return. Stimulants are the most common type of medication prescribed for ADHD. While many people have concerns about these meds, they have the longest track record with the most research to back up their effectiveness. I treat you as the individual you are. Because everyone responds differently to medication, I do a thorough history and evaluation of each of my patients, then prescribe what I assess to be a drug or combination of drugs with the greatest potential for relieving your symptoms. “Since grade school, I’ve always had trouble focusing, organizing and finishing tasks. This affected my performance at work. When I began seeing Dr. Dzudza, he prescribed Adderall at a lower, more effective dose than I had been taking. Almost immediately, I started experiencing an improvement in goal orientation, organization and work performance. I found Dr. Dzudza to be both efficient and concerned when helping me with my situation. I have already referred friends to him.” JH, Chicago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK1lFFVeAkk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoV0mQwpukg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IB7IjpZWGLk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lwi6wryZx-I https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMMpRN_SuA8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKNG6HmyBQo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zigazdigqZk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xhC-ceF1kQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlggdBRLIlU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKziN34Cz5s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYNuTGahoPM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfEle4GQZhA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elqleYYEzTY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDqrEOrwx4w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ordur51yN7o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04d5CC2cqWA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctfLaEYFlqU

Feelings: Handle them before they handle you | Mandy Saligari | TEDxGuildford

18:01
Feelings are what we have the most of and know the least about; handle them or they will handle you Mandy’s first contact with the world of addiction, mental health and recovery was when she came into treatment in 1990. Her passion for therapy and its potential for change ignited here, inspiring her to make therapy her life’s work. Alongside a growing private practice Mandy always gave time to promote early intervention through lectures on addiction, emotional coping mechanisms and self-esteem as part of the PSHE (Personal, Social & Health Education) provision within independent schools. In 2008, with a busy private practice and many years of recovery under her belt, Mandy founded CHARTER Harley Street, an outpatient centre treating addiction and trauma using her pioneering model of care. Pupils suffering from anxiety and depression to receive counselling in schools

01:05
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2017/dec/03/children-with-mental-health-issues-to-get-more-help-but-not-until-the-2020s TRANSCRIPT: Children suffering from anxiety and depression will be offered counselling at school under government plans to tackle a widely reported crisis in young people's mental health. Around £215m of the £300m will fund the creation of mental health support teams in schools. She welcomed better coordination between schools and the NHS, but said that some schools were already working well with the health service and others should learn the lessons from those places. Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb, the coalition's mental health minister, said: "We published the Future in Mind report in March 2015. It was a blueprint for modernising children and young people's mental health services. They have failed to drive the implementation of that blueprint. Why should we have any expectation that this will be any different? They should have just implemented it. At its heart it was all about linking schools much more closely with mental health services. Two years on, deja vu."

How to find and do work you love | Scott Dinsmore | TEDxGoldenGatePark (2D)

Scott Dinsmore's mission is to change the world by helping people find what excites them and build a career around the work only they are capable of doing. He is a career change strategist whose demoralizing experience at a Fortune 500 job launched his quest to understand why 80% of adults hate the work they do, and more importantly, to identify what the other 20% were doing differently. His research led to experiences with thousands of employees and entrepreneurs from 158 countries. Scott distilled the results down to his Passionate Work Framework - three surprisingly simple practices for finding and doing work you love, that all happen to be completely within our control.
